Arroyo Seco

Arroyo Seco is a town in Arroyo Seco Municipality located in the far north of the Mexican state of Querétaro. Its territory is part of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve of Querétaro. The municipality is centered on the small town of Arroyo Seco, which was established as a military outpost then given town status in 1833 under the name of Villa de Guadalupe before changing to its current name. The town gained municipal status in 1931. The area is very rural with most people living in communities of under 100 people, with significant Pame communities. It has a traditional economy based on agriculture, livestock and forestry but it is also one of the poorest in Mexico, with high rates of emigration, especially sending migrant workers to the United States. It is estimated that one in four households in the municipality receives money from family members in this country. The municipality is also home to one of five Franciscan mission complexes built under the tenure of Junípero Serra, located in the community of Concá.

Sierra Gorda

The Sierra Gorda is an ecological region centered on the northern third of the state of Querétaro and extending into the neighboring states of Guanajuato, Hidalgo and San Luis Potosí. Within Querétaro, the ecosystem extends from the center of the state starting in parts of San Joaquín and Cadereyta de Montes municipalities and covering all of the municipalities of Peñamiller, Pinal de Amoles, Jalpan de Serra, Landa de Matamoros and Arroyo Seco, for a total of 250 km2 of territory. The area is extremely rugged with high steep mountains and deep canyons. As part of the Huasteca Karst, it also contains many formations due to erosion of limestone, especially pit caves known locally as sótanos. The area is valued for its very wide diversity of plant and animal life, which is due to the various microenvironments created by the ruggedness of the terrain and wide variation in rainfall. This is due to the mountains’ blocking of moisture coming in from the Gulf of Mexico, which generally makes the east side fairly moist and the west semiarid scrub brush. Most of the region has been protected in two biosphere reserves, with the one centered in Querétaro established in 1997 and the one centered in Guanajuato established in 2007. The Sierra Gorda is considered to be the far west of the La Huasteca region culturally and it is home to the Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda World Heritage Site.

Queretaro

Santiago de Querétaro is the capital and largest city of the state of Querétaro, located in central Mexico. It is part of the macroregion of Bajío. It is located 213 kilometers northwest of Mexico City, 63 kilometers southeast of San Miguel de Allende and 200 kilometers south of San Luis Potosí. The city of Querétaro is divided into seven boroughs: Josefa Vergara y Hernández, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Centro Histórico, Cayetano Rubio, Santa Rosa Jáuregui, Félix Osores Sotomayor and Epigmenio González. Querétaro metropolitan area has the 2nd highest GDP per capita among Mexico's metropolitan areas with 20,000 USD after Monterrey. The city is the fastest-growing in the country, basing its economy to IT and data centers, logistics services, aircraft manufacturing and maintenance, call centers and manufacturing center for automotive and machinery industry, chemicals and food products. The region of Querétaro has a rapidily growing vineyards agriculture and it hosts the famous wine producer from Spain: Freixenet, the wine production in Querétaro is now the second largest in Mexico after the Baja California region. This has caused the city and the metropolitan area to attract many migrants from other parts of Mexico. Estadio Corregidora

Estadio Corregidora is a stadium in Querétaro, Mexico. Named for Mexican War of Independence heroine Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez , it has a capacity of 34,045 and is located on the outskirts of the city of Querétaro, 211 kilometres north of Mexico City. This venue is used mostly for football games. It is the home of the team Querétaro FC and hosted the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Built in 1985 in a collaboration between Mexican and European partners, it is considered one of the most notable stadiums in Mexico. Its design allows for the safe exit of all spectators even if full in less than seven minutes. It is one of the largest football venues in Mexico, after the Estadio Azteca, the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, the Estadio Azul , Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, Estadio BBVA Bancomer in greater Monterrey and Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara, Jalisco It is also used for concerts, hosting internationally known pop stars like Rod Stewart, Miguel Bosé and Shakira, among others.

Antea LifeStyle Center

Antea LifeStyle Center or simply Antea is a shopping mall in the city of Querétaro, Mexico, which was opened in November 2013. It is the largest mall in Mexico and Latin America. Construction began in June 2011 and the opening is scheduled for October 2013 for the first phase, which has a reported cost of $1 billion and will have a total area of 271,000 m2 of construction. The first phase of the complex will feature new to market retailers such as Tory Burch, Chanel, Burberry, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Louis Vuitton, Chicos, Anne Fontaine, Dolce Gabbana and Crate Barrel. Dining options include California Pizza Kitchen, PF Changs and Texas de Brazil. The mall will also feature Pink Berry, Zara Home, Pottery Barn, Design Within Reach and a Ferrari Maserati dealership. JW Marriott plans to open a property adjacent to Antea by 2017.

Bernal

San Sebastián Bernal, better known as Bernalis a colonial village in the Mexican state of Querétaro. It was founded in 1642 by Spanish soldier Alonso Cabrera. Bernal is located 40 minutes by road from state capital Santiago de Querétaro and two and a half hours from Mexico City. It is located in Ezequiel Montes municipality, a few minutes from Colón and Cadereyta. It has a current population of 2909. 1377 are males and 1532 are females. 1014 persons are counted as Economic Active Population and there are only 630 inhabited homes in town. It is known for its enormous monolith of massive rock, the Peña de Bernal, the third highest on the planet. Likewise, in the Otomi language: Mahando, in Chichimeca: Dehendo, has the same meaning: “In the middle of two”. Recently, the town of Bernal acquired the title of Pueblo Mágico . The Magical Towns are admitted for being localities that have magic symbolic attributes, legends, history, transcendental facts, that associate in each of his cultural manifestations, and that today mean a great opportunity for tourism.

Urecho

Colón is a town in Colón Municipality of the State of Querétaro, Mexico. It is the only one in the country named after Christopher Columbus . Its the states third largest municipality, with 815 square kilometers. Its mean altitude is 1900 meters above sea level. The Continental Divide of the Americas runs through it. The Otomi people inhabited this land, which was called Hospadá, meaning land of vultures. The Chichimeca Jonaz people displaced them to the south around the 14th century. 1531 The Spaniards arrive, allied with the Chichimecs and built a fort called San Isidro. 1550 Formal founding of the town, renamed Tolimanejo. In the same year Ajuchitlán and Zamorano were founded. 1687 Soriano is founded, just one kilometer from Tolimanejo. 1882 State Congress decided to unify Soriano and Tolimanejo as the new city of Colón. 1920 Rómulo de la Torre becomes the first and only Governor of Querétaro born in Colón 1923 Colón became a municipality. 2004 Querétaro International Airport starts operations, it is partly on Colón soil, near Galeras. 2007 The first aeronautical assembly plant is inaugurated. The economy is centered mainly around poultry and cattle, as well as agriculture. There are dairy farms and animal food processing factories. New aeronautical companies are expected to invest in the area. Tourism is based on rock drawings, water parks, camping sites on forests, sport fishing, and the local Fair. Religious tourism is derived from the Sanctuary of Soriano, which attracts visitors during Holy Week and September. Colón is present in the State Congress by the Representatives of the 13th District and in the Federal Congress by the Representatives of the 1st Federal Electoral District of the State of Querétaro.

San Juan del Río

San Juan del Río is a city and administrative seat of the surrounding San Juan del Río Municipality in the central Mexican state of Querétaro. The population in July, 2007 is calculated in 128,270 for the city and 217,980 for the municipality. The city and municipality both rank second in population in the state. The municipality has an area of 799.9 km2 . It is located on the countrys central plateau, 50 km south-east of state capital Santiago de Querétaro, at 20°23′N 99°59′W and an elevation of 1,922 metres . Famous for its opals, mined at nearby La Trinidad, it is also an agricultural center and has some light industry. A number of wineries are also located in the vicinity. It is connected to Santiago de Querétaro and Mexico City by the mainline freight railway and Federal Highway 57.

Tequisquiapan

Tequisquiapan is a town and municipality located in the southeast of the state of Querétaro in central Mexico. The center of the town has cobblestone streets, traditional rustic houses with wrought iron fixtures, balconies, and wooden windowsills, which is the legacy of its 300-year heritage as a colonial town populated mostly by indigenous people. This, the climate, and the local natural water springs have made the town a popular weekend getaway for cities such as Querétaro and Mexico City, which has led to the construction of weekend homes in the town. Tequisquiapan is part of Querétaro’s Ruta de Vino with La Redonda as the municipality’s major producer. Grape production began in the early 1960s, but has become important enough to be featured on the municipality’s seal. The town hosts the annual Feria Nacional del Queso y el Vino, which showcases southern Querétaro’s cheese and wine production.

Pyramid of El Pueblito

The Pyramid of El Pueblito, known as El Cerrito to those living in its immediate surroundings, is an archaeological site in the Mexican State of Querétaro, in the settlement of El Pueblito, seat of the municipality of Corregidora. This pyramid, located within the metropolitan area of Santiago de Querétaro, is part of the archaeological zone of El Cerrito. This site had an important population prior to the Spanish conquest of Mexico. During the 1st millennium there were several settlements in the Bajío area, this being one of the most important ruins in the central region of Mexico. It is presumed that its history stretches back two thousand years, beginning when the first settlers arrived in the valley of the El Pueblito river, an area suitable for agriculture. Some current settlements that were populated during this era include El Pueblito, Santa Bárbara, La Negreta, El Recodo, El Shindó, El Molinito and La Cueva. The people worked the land, dammed the river in order to irrigate their fields and opened roads for communication, making El Cerrito the first nucleus of spiritual and political importance in the region. The pyramid, similar in size to the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacán, was erected at some time before 1000 AD. Important relics have been found, such as sculptures, tombstones, calendar glyphs and many figurines. For more than a millennium the site was exposed to the climate and negative human intervention, suffering enormously. As late as the twentieth century the area was subject to vandalism and theft: since there was no control over it, visitors could remove whatever they found. It was not until 1995 that Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History began restoration projects and was able to rescue some articles, which can now be seen in the Regional Museum in Santiago de Querétaro. In the open space dubbed Plaza de las Esculturas (Place of the Sculptures), works have recovered 13 skulls, 18 jaws and numerous teeth and other bones. They correspond to male individuals of between 18 and 35 years of age.

El Cerrito

The Cerrito is an archaeological zone in Queretaro State. As a place of worship, was venerated by local cultures as well as Teotihuacan’s, Toltec, Chichimeca, Otomi and Purépecha, as late as 1632. The first Querétaro human settlements are related to the Chupícuaro culture, which originated in the margins of the Lerma River, in the current Acámbaro, Guanajuato. This presence is more noticeable and early in San Juan del Río and Querétaro. Chupícuaro culture had a simple low platform architecture, very elaborated funeral rites, and very elaborated pottery decoration. Material evidence of this culture has been registered on sites located in the skirts of the Cimatario Hill on the banks of the Pueblito River. Magdalena to the west and La Griega, to the east are further evidence of this culture in the Valley of Querétaro. The earliest settlements in Querétaro, were related and contemporary to the Chupícuaro culture in the mesoamerican preclassical. From the social, political and territorial structure of Chupícuaro, inhabitants of the Querétaro region developed their own cultural expressions within the context of the Mesoamerican civilization.

Cadereyta de Montes

Cadereyta de Montes is a city and municipality in Querétaro, Mexico. The municipality is the second most extensive in the state. The city was founded in 1640, and received its current name in two stages: first in 1642 in honor of Viceroy Don Lope Díez de Armendáriz, marqués de Cadereyta, and then in 1904 after the lawyer Ezequiel Montes. From its conception during the Spanish rule of Mexico, the city was intended to become quite important. It received the status of Alcaldía mayor in 1689, thus becoming the dominant city in this part of the state. It was a post from which the main trade routes were defended from attacks by the indigenous people of the Sierra Gorda. A famous greenhouse called Finca Schmoll is in the city, preserving a large collection of desert plants open to the public. The population of the municipality grew from 51,688 in 2000 to 57,204 in 2005.

Valle de Guadalupe

Landa de Matamoros is a town in Landa de Matamoros Municipality located in the northwest of the state of Querétaro in central Mexico. It is part of the Sierra Gorda region, which consists of rugged mountains, canyons and wide diversity of flora and fauna, with the municipalitys flora representing about 25% of all the plant diversity in Mexico. In the pre-Hispanic period, the area was heavily influenced by Huastecas and local cultures, later dominated by the Chichimecas, especially the Pames. Complete Spanish domination came late, in the mid 18th century, but two of the five Franciscan mission complexes built to solidify this domination were built in the municipality. Today, Landa de Matamoros remains rural and impoverished with a high rate of emigration out of the area, especially to the United States. Remittances sent by relatives from there now form most of the municipalitys economy.

Peñamiller

Peñamiller is a town in Peñamiller Municipality in the Mexican state of Querétaro. It is part of the Sierra Gorda region with about eighty percent of the territory belonging to the Sierra Gorda Biosphere of Querétaro. The municipality is on the southwest side of the Sierra Gorda, the highest mountains of which block most of the moisture coming in from the Gulf of Mexico. For this reason, most of the territory is arid, part of what is called the Querétaro “semi-desert” filled with cactus. There is a small portion on the far east side which has temperate forests and bodies of water, mostly related to the Extoraz River, in which fish are raised. The name of the town and municipality comes from a mountain called “El Picacho” but reminded town founder José de Escandón of the Peña Mellera in Spain. Over time, the name morphed into Peñamiller.

Amealco de Bonfil

Amealco is a municipality in the Mexican state of Querétaro. Its name is thought to mean place of springs in Nahuatl. The municipality seat, also called Amealco, is located 63 km southeast of Santiago de Querétaro. Its elevation is 2,605 meters above sea level, and the annual temperature ranges from 15 to 20 °C. It is one of the oldest settlements of Querétaro, being founded in 1538 by Fernando de Tapia and Nicolás de San Luis Montañez, who would also found the State capital. In the early 19th century, a group of French and Spanish entrepreneurs settled in the city and began the logging industry, which at its peak was one of the main suppliers of wood to Mexico City, and also exported wood to France and the United States. The governments of these two countries issued diplomas kept in the Palacio Municipal that certify the quality of Amealcos products. The Hñähñu or Otomí people are concentrated in the southern and eastern parts of the municipality, in 34 settlements. The main ones are Santiago Mexquititlán and San Ildefonso Tultepec. They number around 20,000 people, or 36% of the total population. Amealco is the municipality with the highest concentration of indigenous people, with almost 80% of the States total.
