Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth is a historic market town, administrative centre and holiday resort within Ceredigion, West Wales. Often colloquially known as Aber, it is located near the confluence of the rivers Ystwyth and Rheidol. Since the late 19th century, Aberystwyth has also been a major Welsh educational centre, with the establishment of a university college there in 1872. At the 2001 census, the town's population was 15,935, reducing to 13,040 at the 2011 Census. During nine months of the year, there is an influx of students—to a total number of 10,400 as of September 2012. Including the suburbs of Llanbadarn Fawr the population is 16,420.

Cardigan

Cardigan is a town in the county of Ceredigion in Mid Wales. It lies on a tidal reach of the River Teifi at the point where Ceredigion meets Pembrokeshire. It was the county town of the historic county of Cardiganshire and is the second largest town in present-day Ceredigion. The settlement at Cardigan was developed around the Norman castle built in the late 11th or early 12th century. The castle was the location of the first National Eisteddfod in 1176 and in 2014 was undergoing restoration. In the 18th century the town became an important port which had declined by the early 20th century. The population in 2001 was 4,203, reducing slightly to 4,184 at the 2011 Census. Modern Cardigan is a compact and busy town with most facilities for retail, education, health, worship and sport.

Lampeter

Lampeter is a town in Ceredigion, South West Wales, lying at the confluence of the River Teifi and the Afon Dulas. It is the third largest urban area in Ceredigion after Aberystwyth and Cardigan.

Aberystwyth University

Aberystwyth University is a public research university located in Aberystwyth, Wales. Aberystwyth was a founding Member Institution of the former federal University of Wales. There are over 7,500 students in the Universitys three main faculties of arts, social science and the sciences. Founded in 1872 as University College Wales, Aberystwyth it became a founder member of the University of Wales in 1894 and changed its name to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. In the mid-1990s, the university again changed its name to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. On 1 September 2007, the University of Wales ceased to be a federal university and Aberystwyth became independent again. The QS World University Rankings placed Aberystwyth in the 451–500 bracket in 2012, 551–600 in 2013, and 601–650 in 2014. The Guardian University League Table 2015 ranks it 106th out of 116 UK universities, down from 88th in the 2014 table. The Complete University Guides 2015 table ranks it 87th out of 123 British universities, down from 70th in 2014.

Llandysul

Llandysul is a small town and community in the county of Ceredigion, Wales. As a community it consists of the villages of Capel Dewi, Horeb, Pont Sian, Pren-gwyn, Tregroes, Rhydowen and the village of Llandysul itself. At the 2001 census the community had a population of 1484, reducing to 1,439 at the 2011 Census. Llandysul lies in the valley of the River Teifi and is visited for its fishing and canoeing. Llandysul is also known as the home of Gwasg Gomer, one of the most prominent publishers of Welsh-interest and Welsh language books in Wales. The town is twinned with Plogonnec in Brittany, France.

Tregaron

Tregaron is a market town in the county of Ceredigion, Wales, lying on the River Brenig , a tributary of the River Teifi. The town is twinned with Plouvien, in Finistere, France. According to the 2011 Census, the population of the ward of Tregaron was 1,173 and 67% of the population could speak Welsh.

National Library of Wales

The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, is the national legal deposit library of Wales and is one of the Welsh Government sponsored bodies. It is the biggest library in Wales, holding over 6.5 million books and periodicals, and the largest collections of archives, portraits, maps and photographic images in Wales. The Library is also home to the national collection of Welsh manuscripts, the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, and the most comprehensive collection of paintings and topographical prints in Wales. As the primary research library and archive in Wales and one of the largest research libraries in the United Kingdom, the National Library is a member of Research Libraries UK and the Consortium of European Research Libraries . Welsh is its main medium of communication. However, it aims to deliver all public services in Welsh and English. In January 2015 the Library in partnership with Wikimedia UK appointed a full-time Wikipedian in Residence with the aim of developing further its resources on an open licence, to a world-wide audience.

Pontrhydfendigaid

Pontrhydfendigaid is a village in Ceredigion, Wales. It lies on the western flank of the Cambrian Mountains, and is located between Devil's Bridge and Tregaron. The village lies on the River Teifi, the source of which is just 5 km to east at Llyn Teifi. It is known for the ruins of the Cistercian Strata Florida Abbey, founded 1164, where Dafydd ap Gwilym is said to be buried and Llywelyn the Great held a council. The station at Strata Florida was positioned to serve the village. The village is home to an annual eisteddfod and a Celtic Music Society is based at the village's Black Lion Hotel. The village was the birthplace and home of Caradog Jones, the first Welshman to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Ynyslas

Ynyslas pronounced according to the International Phonetic Alphabet , is a small Welsh village about 1.5 miles north of Borth and 8 miles north of Aberystwyth, within the county of Ceredigion. It is sandwiched between a long sandy beach in Cardigan Bay and the beach in the Dyfi Estuary. The area between the sea and the estuary beach is made up of the Ynyslas Sand Dunes which are part of the Dyfi National Nature Reserve and home to many rare plants and animals. The sands of the estuary beach can be driven onto and parked upon. The nature reserve has a visitor centre with toilets and a small shop. At the start of some BBC 1 programmes it shows people flying kites on sand dunes and this was filmed at Ynyslas. The northern end of the Ceredigion Coast Path extends to the Dyfi Estuary National Nature Reserve at Ynyslas.

Gaer Penrhôs

Gaer Penrhôs, in Ceredigion, Wales, was a ringwork castle at the summit of a steep hill near the village of Llanrhystud; now all that remains are the outlines of its ringworks. Through the years it has variously been referred to as Llanrhystud Castle and Castell Cadwaladr and has likely been the site of more than one structure. Gaer Penrhôs commands a view into the mountains of the Ystwyth Valley and over Cardigan Bay. The ringwork consists of a small courtyard enclosed by a large rampart and outer ditch, however it lines up with the remains of what appears to have been a much larger enclosure that could have formed the basis of a much older Roman-era hillfort . According to the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, a ring motte was first erected by Richard de la Mare in around 1110; just six years later it was captured by Gruffydd ap Rhys, and destroyed by Cadwaladr ap Gruffydd in 1136, who built a new castle on basically the same site in 1149. In 1150, a dispute between Cadwaladrs brother Owain Gwynedd and his nephew Hywel ab Owain Gwynedd, Owains son, erupted and Hywel seized Gaer Penrhôs for himself. Hywel was only able to retain control of the castle for a year, losing it to Rhys ap Gruffydd and his brothers. The castle hadnt seen the last of Hywel, however; he returned some months later, where he slaughtered the castles garrison and destroyed its timber defenses. In 1158 what appears to be a new structure was captured by Normans, but that was likely burned to the ground again when Rhys returned later to scourge every English-controlled castle in Ceredigion.

Mynach Falls

Mynach Falls is a waterfall near Aberystwyth in the county of Ceredigion, Wales. It occurs where the River Mynach drops 90 metres in 5 steps down a steep and narrow ravine before it meets the River Rheidol. The area is famous for the Devils Bridge, a series of three arch bridges that span the river, one above the other. The area near the waterfall is the terminus of the Vale of Rheidol Railway.

Hafod Uchtryd

Hafod Uchtryd is a wooded and landscaped estate, located in Ceredigion, west Wales, in the Ystwyth valley. It is near Devils Bridge, Cwmystwyth and Pont-rhyd-y-groes off the B4574 road which is described by the Automobile Association as one of the ten most scenic drives in the world. It was anciently the location of a dwelling on the side of the hill above the river Ystwyth, looking to the east. First used as a hunting lodge for Welsh Chieftains, it became home to landed gentry and nobility, and in the late eighteenth century became a celebrated landscape, under the ownership of Thomas Johnes.

Y Garn

Y Garn is a subsidiary summit of Pen Pumlumon Fawr and the fourth highest peak on the Plynlimon massif, a part of the Cambrian Mountains in the county of Ceredigion, Wales. The summit is marked by a large shelter cairn, hollowed out from an ancient burial cairn. The views include Rhos Fawr, Drygarn Fawr, Pen y Garn to the south and Aran Fawddwy, Glasgwm, Tarrenhendre and Tarren y Gesail to the north. The Nant-y-moch Reservoir can also be seen to the north, with the smaller summits of Drosgol at 550 m and Banc Llechwedd-mawr at 560 m . both Marilyns.

Borth

Borth (Welsh: Y Borth, (literally English: The Port)) is a coastal village 7 miles north of Aberystwyth in the county of Ceredigion, Mid Wales. It lies on the Ceredigion Coast Path. The population was 1,523 in 2001.

Our Lady of Cardigan, also known as Our Lady of the Taper, the Catholic national shrine of Wales, is a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary created by Sr Concordia Scott and located in a chapel in Cardigan, Ceredigion, Wales.

Llansantffraed

Llansantffraed is a parish in the community of Talybont-on-Usk in Powys, Wales near Brecon. The church of St Ffraid is a grade II* listed building. It was rebuilt in 1885. The parish is the birth and burial place of the poet Henry Vaughan whose grave in the churchyard overlooks the River Usk.

Llanbadarn-fawr

Llanbadarn Fawr is an urbanised village and community in Ceredigion, Wales. It is located on the outskirts of Aberystwyth situated next to Penparcau and Southgate. It forms the eastern part of the continually built-up area of Aberystwyth. It holds two electoral wards, Padarn and Sulien which elect a Ceredigion County Councillor each and several Llanbadarn Fawr Community Councillors. At the 2001 census its population as a community was recorded at 2,899, increasing to 3,380 at the 2011 census.

Aberystwyth Cliff Railway

The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway is a funicular railway in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, Wales. Opened in 1896 at 778 feet in length, it was the longest funicular railway in the British Isles, surpassed in length by the Cairngorm Mountain Railway at 1,970m, with a height difference of 462m.

Capel Bangor

Capel Bangor is a small village in Ceredigion, in Wales. Its population is around 600-1000, and it is also approximately five miles from the seaside and university town of Aberystwyth.

Teifi Valley Railway

The Teifi Valley Railway is a 2 ft narrow gauge railway operating between Llandysul and Newcastle Emlyn along the River Teifi, West Wales. It is a tourist railway built on the GWR part of the Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway and operated on about two miles of track. A new platform was constructed at Henllan, on the original GWR location, from where the service had been planned to continue to Newcastle Emlyn and, eventually, to Pentrecwrt. Until the lines suspension in July 2014 trains ran from Henllan station to Pont Goch .

Sarn Gynfelyn

The Sarn Gynfelyn shingle spit on the coast of Cardigan Bay, in the county of Ceredigion, Mid-Wales, in the United Kingdom. It is located at Wallog, a few kilometres north of Llangorwen, close to Clarach Bay, south of Borth and north of the regional capital Aberystwyth. Similar landform examples are found at several points along the Cardigan Bay coast, known as sarnau. They are thought to be long subtidal banks of glacial moraines.

The Internal Fire – Museum of Power is a museum of internal combustion engines in West Wales. The museums collection is mostly of larger stationary diesel engines, as used for generating sets and pumping stations. The museum is located at Tanygroes, Ceredigion, near Cardigan.

Aberystwyth University Ceramics Collection

The Aberystwyth University Ceramic Collection Archive is located in Aberystwyth, Wales. It holds one of the major collections of studio ceramics in Britain and is particularly noted for its studio pottery of the period 1920-1940. The permanent and temporary exhibitions from the collection are on display in the Ceramic Gallery in Aberystwyth Arts Centre and the archive office is located in the School of Art, Aberystwyth University. The Ceramic Bulletin is produced every two years by the university and it features news of activities including exhibitions, new acquisitions, research, awards and grants.

Llanerchaeron

Llanerchaeron, known as "Llanayron House" to its nineteenth-century occupants, is a grade I listed mansion on the River Aeron, designed and built in 1795 by John Nash for Major William Lewis as a model, self-sufficient farm complex located near Ciliau Aeron, some 2½ miles south-east of Aberaeron, Ceredigion, Wales. There is evidence that the house replaced an earlier mansion. A later owner, William Lewes was the husband of Colonel Lewiss inheriting daughter. The estate is now in the care of the National Trust. The neighbouring parish church of St Non—also redesigned by Nash—has registers of baptisms and burials dating from 1730 and marriages from 1754.

Vale of Rheidol Railway

The Vale of Rheidol Railway is a 1 ft 11 3/4 in narrow gauge heritage railway that runs for 11 3/4 miles between Aberystwyth and Devils Bridge in the county of Ceredigion, Wales. Until privatisation, it was the sole steam-operated line on the nationalised British Rail network, steam traction having ceased in 1968 on all other parts of the system. Unlike some other preserved railways in the United Kingdom, the Vale of Rheidol Railway has never closed, with the exception of wartime and has operated a service for tourists through its life. The railway celebrated its centenary in 2002.

The Magic of Life Butterfly House

The Magic of Life Butterfly House is an all-weather Butterfly zoo visitor attraction near Aberystwyth, Ceredigion. Visitors can walk among free-flying butterflies in a luxuriant tropical environment. The centre is located in the scenic Rheidol Valley in Mid Wales.

Ystwyth Trail

The Ystwyth Trail is a 21-mile multi-use rail trail linking Aberystwyth, Llanfarian, Ystrad Meurig and Tregaron in Ceredigion, Wales. Cycling and walking are permitted along the entire length while horseriding is permitted on several sections only. The £1.7m Ystwyth Trail was partially completed in September 2008 and runs along part of the former redundant track bed of the Old Manchester and Milford Railway, a Great Western Railway branch line. It remains incomplete, as several sections of the former railway line were not purchased to create the trail due to extensive lobbying by local councillors of Ceredigion County Council against the trail, as existing landowners and farmers objected to the construction of the trail. Diversions of the trail have now been carried out onto narrow sections of existing public roads to link these missing sections, but has created a non continuous trail with intermediate road sections which on narrow roads which have considerable safety issues due to their narrowness, many bends and no traffic speed limits. Due to these objections and lobbying, it is unlikely that this trail will be developed or completed any further. The Ystwyth Trail links with other routes via Lampeter and Devils Bridge creating a link with both the Lôn Cambria and Lôn Teifi long distance cycling routes . bbc.co.uk

Strata Florida Abbey

Strata Florida Abbey derives from "Strata". Fflur is also the name of the nearby river, presumably named after the monastery. After the region around St. Davids was firmly occupied by the Norman Marcher lordship of Pembroke by the early 12th century, with St. Davids firmly under Norman influence thereafter, the princely Dinefwr family of Deheubarth transferred their patronage to Strata Florida, interring many of their family members there.

Dylan Thomas Trail

The Dylan Thomas Trail runs through places associated with the poet Dylan Thomas in Ceredigion, west Wales. It was officially opened by Aeronwy Thomas, Dylan’s daughter, in July 2003. The trail is marked by blue plaques and information boards in Lampeter, Aberaeron and New Quay. There is also a detailed guide available, The Dylan Thomas Trail, which helps you walk the route but also describes the poet’s time in the area. The trail begins on the coast at the Central Hotel in Llanon, then meanders through upland countryside to Plas Gelli, Talsarn, the mansion where Dylan and Caitlin lived for part of WWII. It continues to Lampeter, before turning west to wander along the beautiful Aeron valley. The walk passes Tyglyn Aeron which was the summer home of the publisher, Geoffrey Faber – T. S. Eliot spent holidays here in the 1930s. The trail then continues past the National Trust’s Llanerchaeron estate until it reaches Aberaeron on the coast of Cardigan Bay. From here, it runs along the cliffs to New Quay, where Dylan and family lived in 1944-45. The trail runs through Plas Llanina, once the home of Lord Howard de Walden, who encouraged Dylan to write in the mansion’s apple house. Next comes Majoda, the tiny bungalow where Dylan and family lived through one of the coldest winters on record . The trail then follows the beach, before it arrives in New Quay, its finishing point. There are further day walks on extensions of the trail, including Eli Jenkins Pub Walk which starts and finishes at the Crown in nearby Llwyndafydd. For those walking the trail who want to know more about Dylan’s time in west Wales, there’s a companion book available, A Farm, Two Mansions and a Bungalow. It also contains an account of the infamous shooting at Majoda whilst Dylan lived there in 1945.

Afon Mynach

The Afon Mynach is a small river in Ceredigion, Wales. Its source is at the meeting of two smaller rivers, the Nant Rhuddnant and the Afon Merin. Both of these streams have their sources in lakes high on the Cambrian Mountains, the Afon Merin flows from Llynoedd Ieuan, and the Nant Rhuddnant from Llyn Rhuddnant. The Afon Mynach is notable for the famous Mynach Falls in the village of Devil's Bridge , where the river plunges 90 metres into the gorge of the River Rheidol. It is also famous for the three bridges built one on top of the other in the same village, the lowest of the three said to be built by the devil (hence the name Devil's Bridge), but most probably built by the monks of Strata Florida.
