Cabo Pulmo National Park

Cabo Pulmo is a national marine park on the east coast of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, Pulmo Point to Los Frailes Cape, approximately 60 miles (100 km) north of Cabo San Lucas. Bahía Pulmo is the location of the oldest of only three coral reefs on the west coast of North America. The reef, estimated to be 20,000 years old, is the northernmost coral reef in the eastern Pacific. The reef has a number of fingers of hard coral atop rock outcroppings that run parallel to the coast occurring in progressively deeper water offshore. On June 5, 1995, Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo declared the area surrounding Cabo Pulmo, a National Marine Park. Amigos para la Conservación de Cabo Pulmo, A.C. (Friends for the Conservation of Cabo Pulmo - ACCP) is a community organization founded in 2002 to promote conservation of the natural resources of the park. In May 2 of 1997 Jose Luis Pepe Murrieta was the first volunteer Park Director appointed by the INE ( National Ecological Institute)and the non profit organization Patronato Cabo del Este,A.C founded same year 1997 , was and still is the supporting organization while the federal government got enough budget for the Park, and then Carlos Narro was appointed the first official Park Director by La Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas or CONANP in 2004. In his book The Log from the Sea of Cortez, John Steinbeck described Cabo Pulmo Reef as follows: "The complexity of the life pattern on Pulmo Reef was even greater than at Cabo San Lucas. Clinging to the coral, growing on it, burrowing into it, was a teeming fauna. Every piece of the soft material broken off, skittered and pulsed with life, little crabs and worms and snails. One small piece of coral might conceal 30 or 40 species, and the colors on the reef were electric.” Before establishment of the park the area was heavily over fished. Creating the national park and policing it has been beneficial to the marine ecosystem. During the first decade of the 21st century the area has seen over 400% increase in total biomass. The increase is attributed to the healthy condition of the reef itself.

Jacques Cousteau Island

Isla Cerralvo, as is commonly named, whose official name is Isla Jacques Cousteau, is an island located off the Cerralvo Canal coast near La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. It is 18 miles long with a land area of 136.498 km², and is the ninth-largest island in Mexico. It is part of Municipality of La Paz. The island peak comes to 2,100 ft and the ridge line runs north-south with many small streams draining east to Gulf of California and west to Cupalo Canal. There are many steep bluffs on the eastern sides and many sandy beaches and points on the west side. There is abundant marine life surrounding this island due to underwater topography and ocean currents. Virtually all local marine life must migrate past the island and water visibility goes up to 30 meters making it a prime location for big game fishing. There are abundant golden grouper, marlin, sailfish, swordfish or broadbill, and other game fish in Cerralvo Canal waters. Views from island at dawn and sunset are very lively and filled with color.

Ojo de Liebre Lagoon

Ojo de Liebre Lagoon, translated into English as "hare eye lagoon", is a coastal lagoon located in Mulegé Municipality near the town of Guerrero Negro in the northwestern part of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. It lies approximately halfway between the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula and the U.S.-Mexico border, facing the Pacific Ocean; it is part of the Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve UNESCO World Heritage Site and also a major commercial salt plant. It is an important habitat for the reproduction and wintering of the gray whale and harbor seal, as well as other mammals including the California sea lion, northern elephant seal and blue whale. Four species of endangered marine turtles reproduce there. It is an important refuge for waterfowl in the winter. Encompassing both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major salt plant, Laguna Ojo de Liebre embodies the diverse worlds of natural habitat and industrialization. Tourism, now closely controlled, was formerly a threat to the gray whales.

Sierra de la Laguna

The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range on the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. It lies at the southern end of the peninsula in the state of Baja California Sur, and is the southernmost range of the Peninsular Ranges. The southern tip of the peninsula, including the Sierra de la Laguna, was formerly an island, and it has a distinctive flora and fauna, with many affinities to southern Mexico. The Sierra is home to many endemic species and subspecies. The dry San Lucan xeric scrub extends from the coast to 250 meters elevation. The Sierra de la Laguna dry forests occupy lower portion of the range, from 250 to 800 meters elevation. Above 800 meters elevation, the dry forests transition to the Sierra de la Laguna pine-oak forests. The composition of the pine-oak forests varies with elevation; oak woodlands predominate from 800 to 1200 meters elevation, with oak-pine woodlands between 1200 and 1600 meters elevation, transitioning to pine-oak forests above 1600 meters elevation. The predominant pine is a local subspecies of Mexican Pinyon, Pinus cembroides subsp. lagunae. The forests are exploited commercially for timber, and cattle-raising is common in the oak woodland and dry forest zones. UNESCO has designated the Sierra de la Laguna a global biosphere reserve: "This semi arid to temperate subhumid climate area represents highly important and contrasted ecosystems, including arid zones, matorrales, low deciduous forest type, evergreen oak: Quercus devia woods, pine-evergreen oak mix woods and oases with palms and “guerivos” situated throughout the gallery forest following the long river basins." The Biosphere reserve was established by a Mexican presidential decree of 6 June 1994, which designated a core area and buffer zones. The core area is centered on the higher-elevation oak-pine forests, while the transition area includes the communities of Todos Santos, El Pescadero, El Triunfo, San Antonio, San Bartolo, Buena Vista, Los Barriles, Las Cuevas, Santiago and Miraflores.

Los Barriles

Los Barriles is a town in La Paz Municipality, Baja California Sur, Mexico. It is situated along Highway 1, 40 miles north of San José del Cabo and 65 miles south of La Paz. Punta Pescadero Airstrip is 9 miles to the north; Rancho Leonero, a vacation resort, is to the south. Adjacent to Buena Vista, the rural towns straddle the head of Bahía las Palmas on the Gulf of California, where winter westerlies average 20–25 knots . Los Barriles is within the transition area of the Baja California peninsulas Sierra de la Laguna where the hills become sandy flats. Known for its flyfishing, Los Barriles is also Bajas windsurfing capital. The towns port was closed on 2 September during the 2013 Pacific hurricane seasons Tropical Storm Lorena. In 2006, the Shakespeare Theatre Associations annual conference was held in Los Barriles.

El Triunfo

El Triunfo is a small mining town in La Paz Municipality, Baja California Sur, about 4½ miles north of San Antonio. In 1862, silver and gold were discovered in the southern B.C.S. mountains, leading miners from Mexico and the United States to set up camp. Once the largest city in B.C.S, it was home to more than 10,000 miners. In its heyday the town was a cultural center, where Francisca Mendoza taught and performed. Pianos and other instruments were brought to El Triunfo from all over the world and a piano museum still exists. Another remnant of the past is the 35-meter-high smokestack designed by Gustav Eiffel. The mines shut down in 1926 and most people left. The 2010 census reported a population of 321 inhabitants. It is located at an elevation of 483 meters above sea level.

Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas, commonly called Cabo in American English, is a city at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Cabo San Lucas together with San José del Cabo is known as Los Cabos. As of 2010, the city had a population of 68,463. Cabo has been rated as one of Mexicos top 5 tourist destinations; it is known for its beaches, scuba diving locations, balnearios, the sea arch El Arco de Cabo San Lucas, and marine life. The Los Cabos Corridor has become a heavily trafficked holiday destination for tourists, with numerous resorts and timeshares along the coast between Cabo San Lucas and San José Del Cabo. Cabo houses a range of wild life including rays, sharks, birds like eagles and a range of fish like mahi mahi and stripe marlin.

Puerto Escondido

Loreto was the first Spanish settlement on the Baja California Peninsula. It served as the capital of Las Californias from 1697 to 1777, and is the current seat of the municipality of Loreto in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. The city of 14,724 people is located on the coast of the Gulf of California, about 350 km north of the state capital, La Paz. The town was founded in 1697 by Jesuit missionaries, who found a steady spring of fresh water on this site, as the Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto. The Jesuits were expelled in 1767, and control of the Baja California missions was given to the Franciscans. In 1769, the Franciscans were ordered to turn over the Baja missions to the Dominican order and accompany the expedition of Gaspar de Portolà to establish new missions in the unexplored northern frontier that became Alta California. The expedition departed from Loreto on March 24, 1769. The town served as the capital of the province of Las Californias from its founding until the capital was moved to Monterey on February 3, 1777. In 1768, the province had been split into Alta California and Baja California. At first, the two provinces continued with a single governor. Later, the town became the headquarters for the Lieutenant Governor of California Viejo . The city is now a tourist resort, catering mostly to U.S. travelers, with daily flights from the U.S. state of California to Loreto International Airport. Many American tourists enjoy fishing in "pangas" for "dorado" . Local restaurants will willingly prepare the daily catch of the tourists. Loreto has a museum that coexists alongside the historic, but still active, parish. Loreto has active sister city relationships with Hermosa Beach, Cerritos, California, and City of San Buenaventura, California, USA.
