Richmondshire Museum

The Richmondshire Museum is a museum located in Richmond in North Yorkshire, England. The Museum Trust was founded in 1974 by the Soroptimists of Richmond and the Dales; the Museum opened in 1978 in a former joiners workshop, and has expanded its collections ever since. The Museum incorporates a reconstructed cruck house, which contains a collection of domestic bygones. There is a Leadmining Gallery, which details the industry which flourished in Swaledale and the North Yorkshire dales until the end of the nineteenth century. The Transport Gallery has a model of Richmond Railway Station. Another room contains the Herriot Set from the BBCs All Creatures Great and Small, and Barkers Chemists Shop. The Wenham Gallery covers the history of Richmond and district, and contains a former village Post Office from Grinton, just up the dale. In 2008 the Museum opened a recreation of the Richmond grocers shop where the founder of the Fenwick department store chain began his working life.

Stanwick Park

Stanwick Park was a palladian country house at Stanwick St John in Yorkshire. It was re-built by the 1st Duke of Northumberland, a great patron of the arts, c1739-1740, mostly to his own designs. The dukes principal seat was Alnwick Castle thus Stanwick Park was always a secondary residence. The 1st duke furnished the interior of the house with many works of art including paintings by Canaletto. As a secondary seat the house was often allocated to a dowager duchess of Northumberland. During World War I the house served as a military hospital. Following the end of the war it remained empty. In 1918 on the death of 7th Duke of Northumberland his heirs became liable for large death duties as a consequence in 1922 8th Duke of Northumberland sold the estate. The house was demolished in 1923. For many years, previous to World War I, the house had been the residence of Eleanor Percy, Duchess of Northumberland. The duchess lived for 40 years at the house until her own death in 1911. She became so attached to the estate that she chose to be buried in the village church, which she had rebuilt by Salvin, rather than the Northumberland vault in Westminster Abbey. During her occupancy of the house the gardens were expanded and developed, these included an Italian garden also designed by Salvin. During this period the gardens were renowned for their glasshouses producing, what at the time were considered, rare and exotic fruits such as bananas, peaches, grapes, figs and nectarines, some varieties such as the "Stanwick nectarine" were propagated and bred on the estate. The "Stanwick nectarine" was introduced to the United Kingdom by John Barker. The interior of the house contained many fine 18th-century features, before the demolition some of the decorations and motifs were removed. Three of the rooms were removed completely and are today believed by some to be those in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Comparisons with the extant photographs of the house interiors cast doubt upon this, and the links are doubtful; the director of the institute visited Alnwick in the 1930s to check on the provenance no record seem to exist of his ultimate findings. A firm called Robersons in London were in this business. It seems possible that since there were 22 rooms from different houses being traded, of which only three were offered from Stanwick, there may have been an error. Museums in Roslyn, NY, and Toronto, as well as the collection of William Randolph Hearst are also alleged to have Stanwick rooms.

Brough Hall

Brough with St. Giles is a village and a civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The civil parish also includes the settlements of Catterick Bridge and Walkerville, and Catterick Racecourse and the site of the Roman town of Cataractonium. According to the 2001 Census the parish had a population of 338, increasing to 801 at the 2011 Census. Brough was known as Burgh until the 17th century. It was historically a township in the ancient parish of Catterick in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. In 1974 it was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire. St Giles is now a single farm in the north of the parish. Near the modern farm is the site of the medieval hospital of St Giles, a Scheduled Ancient Monument excavated in 1988-1990. Brough Hall is a Grade I listed country house which has now been converted to apartments. It was originally built in the 15th century but has been altered and extended several times since then. Originally owned by the de Burgh family, from c.1575 it belonged to the Lawsons. The former Roman Catholic church of St Paulinus in the grounds of Brough Hall was designed in 1837 by Ignatius Bonomi for the recusant William Lawson and is a Grade II* listed building.
