Ivano-Frankivsk

Ivano-Frankivsk is a historic city located in the western Ukraine. It is the administrative centre of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Administratively, it is designated as a city of regional significance within the oblast, and together with a number of rural localities, is incorporated as Ivano-Frankivsk Municipality. Population: 226,018 (2013 est.). Built in the mid 17th century as a private fortress of the Polish Potocki family, with the partition of Poland in 1772 Stanisławów was passed to the Habsburg Empire, after which it became the property of the State authorities of the Austrian Empire. It was during that time that the fortress was transformed into one of the most prominent cities at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. After World War I, for a short stint it served as temporary capital of the West Ukrainian People's Republic, after the fall of which Stanisławów became part of the Second Polish Republic. At the dawn of World War II, the city was annexed by the Soviet Union, only to be occupied by Nazi Germany two years later. With the liberation of Ukraine in 1944, a Soviet regime was established in the city for the next 45 years. A few years before the fall of the Soviet Union, the blue-yellow flag was raised in the city as the symbol of an independent Ukraine. A city visitor may find elements of various cultures intertwined within Ivano-Frankivsk, the Polish Rathaus, the Austrian city's business center, the Soviet panel multi-storied residential apartment buildings at the city's urban-rural fringe, and others. The city is third in population among other cities in the Carpathian Euroregion, yielding only to Lviv and Košice.

Yaremche

Yaremche is a city in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast of west Ukraine. It is administratively incorporated as a town of oblast significance and is the center of Yaremche Municipality which includes the urban-type settlement of Vorokhta, a ski resort, and five other villages: Mykulychyn, Polianytsia, Tatariv, Voronenko, and Yablunytsia. The city is located at the altitude of around 580 metres above mean sea level. Population: 8,124 (2013 est.). The total population of the whole municipality is 20,821 with 11.330 living in Yaremche and Vorokhta. Yaremche hosts the headquarters of the nearby Carpathian National Nature Park.

Manyava Skete

Manyava Skete of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, otherwise known as Ukrainian Athos, is Orthodox solitary cell men´s monastery in the Carpathian mountains of western Ukraine. It is situated on the outskirts of the village of Maniava in Bohorodchany raion of Ivano-Frankivsk region and belongs to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate. Hegumen of the monastery is Ioasaf, metropolitan of Ivano-Frankivsk and Halych. Currently there are 8 monks residing at the monastery. Manyava Skete is famous for the apparition of Virgin Mary who appeared here twice and for its miracle-working icon of Manyava Icon of Mother of God. The icon "cried" twice, shedding myrrh in 2004 and last in spring of 2012. These events was widely reported by the Ukrainian news and TV media. Thousands of Orthodox pilgrims arrive here during the year.

Kosivskyi raion

Kosiv Raion ,(Romanian: Regiunea Cosău) is a raion (administrative district) of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast of Ukraine. The city of Kosiv is the administrative center of the raion. Population: 88,182 (2016 est.).

Zhenetskyi Huk

The Zhenetskyi Huk or the Huk waterfall is located on the Zhenets river about 9 km from Tatariv village, Nadvirna Raion, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast in western Ukraine. the waterfalls height is 15 metres . Local residents named the waterfall Huk because of the noise that is heard from him. Zhenetskyi Huk is located on the Carpathian National Park, Gorgany mountain ridge and on the tourist root to Mount Homiak.

Bukovel

Bukovel — is the largest ski resort in Ukraine situated in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast of western Ukraine. The resort is located almost on the ridge-lines of the Carpathian Mountains at elevation of 900 m above the sea level near the village of Polianytsia . It is one of the most popular ski resorts in the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains and is situated 30 km southwest of the city of Yaremche. In 2012 the Bukovel was named the fastest-growing world ski resort.

Market Square

Market Square in Ivano-Frankivsk is called Ploshcha Rynok and is historically the central square of the city. It is the oldest square and traces its history to the citys establishment. The main feature of the square is the former city hall, Ratusha, which today serves as the building of the Museum of regional studies.

Pip Ivan

Pip Ivan is the third highest peak of the Chornohora range, with height of 2022 meters above sea level. In the interwar period the peak marked the Polish Czechoslovak, from March 1939 Polish Hungarian border and numerous skirmishes between OUN and Polish border troops took place in the area. On the peak of Pop Iwan, Polish government built in the years 1936-1938 an impressive construction Astronomical and Meteorogical Observatory, which was commonly called "Biały Słoń" . Today, the construction is in ruins. Now, Pip Iwan, together with the Chornohora range, is located in Ukraine.

Sheptytsky Square

Sheptytsky Square is a square in the old town of Ivano-Frankivsk, commemorated to the head of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Metropolitan Archbishop Lviv Andrey Sheptytsky who initially served in the town as bishop. The square is located in the center of the town, directly adjacent to the Market Square separated from it by a row of private multi-story apartment buildings. The northern end of the square faces the building Roman Catholic collegiate church of the Blessed Virgin Mary which at the moment contains an art museum. The southern end faces the Greek Catholic Cathedral of Holy Resurrection located in a former Jesuit church and the western side of the square contains the building of a former Jesuit collage now used the Ivano-Frankivsk Medical University.

Residence Synyohora

Residence Synyohora is a National Natural Park of Ukraine that was created in 2009 out of the Presidential official residence located near the Huta rural council, Bohorodchany Raion. The residence also known as the winter residence is administered by the State Management of Affairs and funded by the state budget. Built in 2001 as a sanatorium of the "Ivano-Frankivskghaz", the residence was transferred to state ownership in December 2002 by the Yanukovych government and turned into a national park in 2009.

Avanhard

Avanhard is a ski resort and a main sports base for Olympic preparation in the town of Vorokhta, Ukraine. It is the biggest out of five still operational ski jumping facilities in the country and one of three located in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Vorokhta is frequently associated with the resort and the resort is often referred to simply as Vorokhta or as the "Ramps of Vorokhta" . The resort is popular among both domestic and international athletes. Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University

IvanoFrankivsk National Medical University is an institute of higher medical education in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. The university is situated in Ivano city in northwest of Ukraine and it is a leading higher education establishment of the region of a classical type with a higher accreditation level. The University provides continuity of higher medical education: Junior Specialist – a Bachelor – a Medical Specialist – a Master – a post graduate. Since its establishment in 1967, the universitys focus remains on preparing qualified and experienced specialists for the oil and gas industries. However, it has expanded to offer education in economics, management and law that is directly related to the needs of energy industry. Ivano-Frankivsk Oil and Gas University has a two-pronged approach toward education of its students: in the classrooms and in the field. Then, by working at university "field-classrooms" or by holding internships with regional businesses and organizations, the future specialists gain practical experience.

MCS Rukh

Municipal Central Stadium "Rukh" is the multi-purpose central stadium of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. The stadium is located at 128 Vyacheslav Chernovol Street, the city of Ivano-Frankivsk 750447. It currently holds 15,000 spectators and 6,500 individual plastic seats. By the end of its renovations the capacity of Rukh should be over 20,000 at the end of renovations.

Bukovets pass

Bukovets pass — pass in Pokuttya-Bucovina Carpathians. It is located in the Verkhovyna Raion of the Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, in the Bukovec village, on the Drainage divide of the Rybnytsia and Chornyi Cheremosh rivers. Elevation 835 m. Through the pass goes the local highway Р 24: Kosiv — Verkhovyna. From the pass begins the touristic foot path to the local nature landmark Pysanyj Kamin . Closest villages are Bukovets, Cheretiv, Kryvorivnia.

Gwoździec Synagogue

The Synagogue in Gwoździec located in the Kolomyia Raion, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, was erected in about 1640 under the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, damaged during the First World War in consequence of the Pogrom caused by Tsarist troops and eventually burnt down after 1941 by German occupation forces. This nearly forgotten monument of Jewish culture was recalled in 2014 on the occasion of the reconstruction of the wooden vault in the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.

Halych

Halych is a historic city on the Dniester River in western Ukraine. The town gave its name to the historic province and the Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia, of which it was the capital until the early 14th century, when the seat of the local princes was moved to Lviv. In the past, the town belonged to several countries. In 1349, together with Red Ruthenia, it was annexed by Polish King Casimir III the Great. After his death, it was ruled by the Kingdom of Hungary . For the next 400 years, it was part of Poland’s Ruthenian Voivodeship, but following the first partition of Poland it became part of Austrian Galicia, in which it remained until late 1918. Between November 1918 and May 1919, Halych belonged to short-lived West Ukrainian Peoples Republic. From May 1919 until September 1939, Halicz the seat of a county in Second Polish Republic’s Stanisławów Voivodeship. Today Halych is a small city and is located right next to the former capital of the Galicia Kingdom although it preserved its former name. It also is the administrative center of Halych Raion of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast . It lies 26 km north of the oblast capital, Ivano-Frankivsk. Population: 6,290 .

Probiy is a waterfall on the Prut River, in Yaremche City, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine. Probiy is 8 metres high and is one of the most powerful waterfalls in the Ukrainian Carpathians.

Bohorodchany

Bohorodchany is an urban-type settlement in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, several miles from Ivano-Frankivsk. It is the administrative center of Bohorodchany Raion. Population: 7,872 . It is located in Ukraine, although it has previously belonged to Poland and Austro-Hungary. The town was first mentioned in 1441 as a property of certain Jan of Buczacz, the starost of Trembowla. Since the second half of the 15th century the local estate belonged to the Potocki family. In 1691 Konstancja Potocka née Truskolaska, widow of the owner of the village Dominik Potocki, established a Roman Catholic church and a parish there. In 1742 the wooden church was replaced with a more permanent construction, founded by Stanisław Kossakowski and devoted to the cult of Holy Mary. In 1765 the new church was donated to the Dominican Order, whose friars established a convent there. Later in the 18th century the towns area acted as a base for a local band of outlaws led by Oleksa Dovbush, a semi-legendary Hutsul folk hero, who according to a local legend took the town by force in 1744. In 1786 the town had 314 permanent buildings and 1134 inhabitants. Following the Partitions of Poland the town became part of the Habsburg Empire and then Austria-Hungary. In the 19th century the town was a scene of intense social and economic activities by all three major groups of inhabitants Jews, Ukrainians and Poles. Already in 1770 a Polish language grammar school was established, followed by a Jewish Hertz Homberg school in 1785 and a state-sponsored German language grammar school in 1789. In 1848 a local branch of a Russka Rada was established by 29 local Ukrainians. Around the same time numerous Jewish social and educational facilities were established, including a Hebrew School of the Union of Hebrew Teachers of Austria, a local branch of Ezrat Israel zionist union, a Torat Haim yeshiva and a grammar school for girls . By the end of the 19th century the town grew to 4597 inhabitants, including 2009 Jews, 1788 Greek Catholics and 800 Roman Catholics. The largest estates in the surrounding area belonged to Count Rudolf Stadion. In the aftermath of World War I the town briefly belonged to ZUNR, but in 1919 was taken over by reborn Poland. The local life continued to flourish until World War II. The town was made a seat of a commune. In 1929 a Gmilut Hasadim welfare association was founded in the town. Following the joint Nazi-Soviet invasion of Poland, on September 19, 1939 the town was seized by the Soviet Union and soon afterwards attached to Ukrainian SSR. Since 1991 it is a part of Ukraine.

Bolekhiv

Bolekhiv is a regional city in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast of Ukraine. It was once home to a large Jewish community, very few of whom survived World War II. Administratively, Bolekhiv is incorporated as a city of regional significance. Population: 21,504 (2013 est.).

Kalush, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast

Kalush is a city set in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast of western Ukraine. It is administratively incorporated as a town of oblast significance and serves as the administrative centre of the surrounding Kalush Raion, which it is administratively not a part of. Population: 67,585 . Important local industries include chemicals and concrete. The city is notorious for its bleaching products that locally became referred kalushanka.

Kolomyia

Kolomyia or Kolomyya, formerly known as Kolomea, is a city located on the Prut River in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, in western Ukraine. It is administratively incorporated as a town of oblast significance and serves as the administrative centre of the surrounding Kolomyia Raion, which it is administratively not a part of.. The city rests approximately halfway between Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi, in the center of the historical region of Pokuttya, with which it shares much of its history. Population: 61,428 . The city is a notable railroad hub, as well as an industrial center . It is a center of Hutsul culture. At the turn of the 20th century the city was the most populous city in Stanislawow voivodeship.

Lopushnia

Lopushnia, Lopushnya, sometimes Lopushna is village of 282 people in Rohatyn Raion of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast in western part of Ukraine. It is the first village on the highway when entering Rohatyn raion and Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast from the side of Berezhany and Ternopil Oblast. The river Narayivka flows through Lopushnia. In terms of administration the village is subordinated to the village council in Verkhnia Lypytsia, much larger neighbouring village 2 km away. There are daily bus connections between Lopushnia and Rohatyn, as well as between Lopushnia and Berezhany. The village is easily accessible by road and public transport. There are vast deposits of limestone in the hills. Limestone is being mined and slaked here. The closest railway station is in Pidvysoke, less than 1 km away.

Nadvirna

Nadvirna is a city located in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast in western Ukraine. It is the administrative centre of Nadvirna Raion. Population: 22,209 . From the mid-14th century until 1772 Nadvirna, known in Polish as Nadworna, was part of the Kingdom of Poland. In 1772, it was annexed by the Habsburg Empire, and remained in the province of Galicia until late 1918. In the inter-war years, the borders changed and the town became part of the Second Polish Republic. Following the 1939 Invasion of Poland, it was annexed into the Ukrainian SSR . Nadvirna was occupied by the Germans in 1941 during World War II. After the war it was once again absorbed into the Ukrainian SSR. Since its independence in 1991, the city has been part of Ukraine. The town is located in a slightly hilly, verdant area twenty miles northeast of the Carpathian mountains. Major exports and raw materials from the town include salt, oil and petroleum products, and timber. The town was popular at the start of the 20th century as a summertime resort, with restaurants and hotels.

Voinyliv

Voynyliv is an urban-type settlement in western Ukraine. Voynyliv is situated in Kalush Raion of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, ca. 100 km from Lviv. The closest city is Kalush to the west. The distance to the closest railway station in Kalush is 22 km and it is 42 km from Voynyliv to the city of Ivano-Frankivsk. Population: 2,757 . Voynyliv lies in the lowlands of the Dniester river basin and is located near the Sivka and Bolokhivka Rivers, the tributaries to the Dniester River. Postal code for Voynyliv is 77316 and telephone code is +380 03472. In 2002-2005 there was built a school in Voynyliv designed for 689 students. Within Kalush Raion there is also somewhat smaller village Dovhyi Voynyliv, which should not be mixed with the town of Voynyliv.

Hoshiv

Hoshiv is a village in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast of Ukraine, located about 4 km south east of Bolekhiv and 12 km north west of Dolyna, at around 49°1′30″N 23°52′52″E. The village is known for its Basilian monastery which is a place of pilgrimage for the Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Burshtyn

Burshtyn (Ukrainian: Бурштин, Polish: Bursztyn, Hebrew: בורשטין‎‎) is a city located in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, in western Ukraine, to the north of Halych. It was in the Halych Raion until 11 March, 2014, when it received the status of city of oblast significance. It is accessible by rail. It developed rapidly and significantly grew in population during the Soviet period. Administratively, Burshtyn is incorporated as a city of regional significance. Population: 15,640 (2016 est.). The town, which was one of the Jewish shtetls, and whose name in Ukrainian and Polish literally means Amber, was only granted city status in 1993 and has a special administrative status in Halych Raion. As an urbanized settlement from 1944 to 1962 it was the main town of the raion. There is an old Roman Catholic Church in the center of the city, which was restored in the beginning of the 21st century. One of its landmarks is the Burshtyn TES coal-fired power station, which is situated on a reservoir approximately 8 km long and 2 km wide. A fish farm lies on the lake near the district of Bilshivtsi. The town is known for its soccer club Enerhetyk.
