Malmo

Malmö is the capital and most populous city in Skåne County, and the third largest city in Sweden. Together with Copenhagen , it constitutes the transnational Øresund Region, the most densely populated area in Scandinavia. Malmö is classified as a global city, placed in the gamma- category by the GaWC, ranked 5th in Scandinavia by the Global Cities Index in 2012. It is ranked the fourth-most inventive city in the world based on the number of patent applications per 10,000 residents and the 7th-most bicycle friendly city in the world, according to the Copenhagenize Index in 2013. Malmö was one of the earliest and most industrialized towns of Scandinavia, but it struggled with the adaptation to post-industrialism. Since the construction of the Øresund Bridge, Malmö has undergone a major transformation with architectural developments, and it has attracted new biotech and IT companies, and particularly students through Malmö University, founded in 1998. The city contains many historic buildings and parks, and is also a commercial centre for the western part of Scania. Malmö was ranked #4 in Grist Magazine's "15 Green Cities" list in 2007. The administrative entity for most of the city is Malmö Municipality which, as of 31 March 2013, has 309,105 inhabitants in eight different localities. Malmö is also a bimunicipal locality, as part of it is formally situated in Burlöv Municipality. The total population of the urban area was 280,415 in December 2010. Greater Malmö is one of Sweden's three officially recognized Metropolitan areas and since 2005 is defined as the municipality of Malmö and 11 other municipalities in the southwestern corner of Scania. On 31 March 2012, its population was recorded to be 664,428. The region covers an area of 2,522 square kilometres . The municipalities included, apart from Malmö, are Burlöv, Eslöv, Höör, Kävlinge, Lomma, Lund, Skurup, Staffanstorp, Svedala, Trelleborg and Vellinge. Together with Lund, Malmö is the region's economic and education hub.

Helsingborg

Helsingborg is a town and the seat of Helsingborg Municipality, Scania, Sweden. It had 97,122 inhabitants in 2010. Helsingborg is the centre of the northern part of western Scania. There is no formal metropolitan area, but the municipality of Helsingborg City and its neighbouring five municipalities had in spring of 2013 a population of 269.489 inhabitants at an area of 1.353 square kilometres , a population density of 200 people/km2. This makes Helsingborg the fourth largest population area in Sweden The city is also Sweden's closest point to Denmark, with the Danish city Helsingør clearly visible on the other side of the Øresund about 4 km to the west, closer than to the city's own remoter areas. If including all population around the northern part of Øresund, as a Helsingborg-Helsingør metropolitan area, its population increases to 732.450 at an area of 2.802 square kilometres . The busy ferry route, known as the HH Ferry route has through history been operated by several shipping lines. As of 2014 more than 70 car ferries departures from each harbour every day. Following the Swedish orthography reform of 1906 many place names in Sweden got a modernized spelling. In 1912 it was decided to use the form Hälsingborg. In preparation for the local government reform 1971 the Hälsingborg city council proposed that the new, enlarged municipality should be spelled with an "e". This was also the decision of the Government of Sweden, effective from 1 January 1971. Historic Helsingborg, with its many old buildings, is a scenic coastal city. The buildings are a blend of old-style stone-built churches and a 600-year-old medieval fortress in the city centre, and more modern commercial buildings. The streets vary from wide avenues to small alley-ways. Kullagatan, the main pedestrian shopping street in the city, was the first pedestrian shopping street in Sweden.

Mölle

Mölle is a locality situated in Höganäs Municipality, Skåne County, Sweden with 715 inhabitants in 2010. It is best known for its scenic harbour and its location adjacent to the Kullaberg Nature Reserve. Its harbour, situated on the Kattegat Strait, provides services for marine fishing, watersports outings and tour excursions along the coast, especially the rocky shore of Kullaberg to the north. Fodor characterizes Mölle as "a small town set in spectacular isolation on the dramatic headland of the Kulla Peninsula". As a historic seaside resort, Mölle has hosted numerous technical and professional conferences such as: the Swedish Network of European Economists, Joint Swedish-Russian International Workshop on Information Theory; and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Malmö Castle

Malmö Castle is a fortress located in Malmö, Scania, in southern Sweden. The first castle was founded in 1434 by King Eric of Pomerania. This structure was demolished in early 16th century, and a new one was built in its place in the 1530s by King Christian III of Denmark. Historically, this fortress was one of the most important strongholds of Denmark. The castle was for five years the prison of James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. The earl was taken into custody on the orders of the Protestant Danish king Frederick II of Denmark when his ship ran aground in Bergen, Norway during a storm. He was sent to Malmö Castle to be imprisoned, although he had previously been released from Tower of London for lack of evidence in the murder of Marys second husband, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. As a bachelor, Frederick II courted Elizabeth I of England and was made a Knight of the Garter. Some sources suggest a second reason for the involvement in this matter by the Danish king; he is thought to have held hopes of collecting a ransom from Scotland. However, the Earl of Bothwell died in 1578 in Dragsholm Castle, Zealand, where he had been moved after the first five years in Danish captivity, without ever being the subject of Danish-Scottish negotiations for his release.

Ribersborgs open-air bath

Ribersborg open-air bath (Ribersborgs kallbadhus in Swedish, also known as Ribban by the older and Kallis by the younger generation) is an open-air public bath on the Ribersborg beach in Malmö, Sweden approximately one kilometre southwest of Turning Torso. The bathhouse is open for a skinny dip year round and has separate areas for men and women. Each area is equipped with two saunas and a warm water tub. There is also one mixed sauna (fkk-sauna) between the ladies and gentlemen's area. As well as a cafe and a restaurant. The bath was inaugurated in June 1898 with initiative by C.A. Richter, who bought the old bathhouse at Nyhamn port, which was being sold because of the port's expansion. Four years later a storm damaged the new bath during Christmas and it was rebuilt. During the refurbishment a diving tower was added to the men's department, with a view of the strait and the women's department. During the 1930s it was modernised with nude bathing and confidentiality was added between the departments. In 1966, the City of Malmö purchased the baths. It was again damaged by a storm in 1988 and in 1995 it was declared a historic building.

Ivö Lake

Ivö Lake is the largest and deepest lake of Skåne, Sweden, located in the municipalities of Kristianstad and Bromölla in the northeastern part of Skåne County. It covers an area of just under 55 km², with a maximum depth of 50 meters. The lake is the richest in fish species in Sweden, including pike, salmon, burbot, vendace, bream, ide, ruffe, minnow, rudd, and spined loach, rare for this area, which has prompted biodiversity conservation efforts and attention from among others EU Natura 2000. 25-30 different species are regularly caught in the lake. It is very well known among fishing enthusiasts, not only in Sweden but in many countries in Europe. A lake with numerous islands and sheltered bays, it has become a popular tourist destination for sightseeing as well as fishing. It is surrounded by hills with deciduous forests and valleys with fertile soil, and is located in a climate zone suitable for fruit tree cultivation. The area is one of Scanias fruit districts. One of the larger islands in the lake, Ivö Island, has a permanent, year-round population. A free, cable-driven car ferry operates a regular scheduled service to the island from the village Barum on the mainland. On the island are the ruins of Anders Sunesøns castle Ivöhus. Sunesøn, a Danish archbishop of Lund, died in Ivöhus in 1228.

Ringsjön

Ringsjön is a lake situated in the middle of Skåne County, Sweden. At 41 square kilometres, it is the second largest lake in the county. The western and eastern parts of the lake, called Västra Ringsjön and Östra Ringsjön respectively, are separated by a headland. Västra Ringsjön has a depth of 6 metres at its deepest known point, while Östra Ringsjön has a depth of 17 metres . Ringsjön provides drinking water for the inhabitants of Skåne if the water tunnel connected to the lake Bolmen would cease to work. This happened in 2009, when the tunnel was almost completely blocked after a collapse. Fish species found in Ringsjön are European perch, carp bream, moderlieschen, northern pike, zander, common carp, burbot, common roach, rainbow trout, crucian carp, common rudd, common whitefish, tench, eel, and brown trout. Ringsjön has had an overpopulation of carp bream and common roach for a long time, leading to an increased algal bloom, and in 2005 work began on removing 80% of these species from the lake. Many cranes make stopovers in Ringsjön on their migration to the northern parts of Sweden. They usually arrive to the lake at the end of March, but have been seen as early as 2 March. In the winter, Ringsjön is a popular place for ice yachting because of its smooth ice, and the lake gets visitors from all over Europe. The European Championships in ice yachting were held on Ringsjön in 2006. A biking competition, titled Ringsjön Runt, is held annually by the lake. It attracts an average of 4000–5000 cyclists, and has been held for over forty years. The course consists of four laps around Ringsjön; one lap is 3.5 Scandinavian miles long. Bosjökloster Castle is located on the shore of Ringsjön in Höör Municipality.

Drottningtorget

Drottningtorget is a major public square in central Malmö, Sweden. It lies between the main town square and Värnhem. The area dates back to at least the Middle Ages when the Adelgatan, one of the city's main streets, led to it and it became an important peasant trading centre. However, the modern square was added in the 1810s, when the old fortifications surrounding the town were removed. The square was named after the Swedish queen Frederica of Baden, while Gustav Adolf square was named after the Swedish king Gustav IV Adolf. The building on the square's north side was built in 1818. In 1900, it became the first covered market in Malmö. East and west of the square are houses from the 1890s and early 1900s, while the south side is flanked by an office building from the 1960s. Sometimes an organized flea market takes place on the square. The Red Cross have a building in the area.

Malmö Opera

Malmö Opera is an opera house in Malmö, Sweden. An opera company of the same name presents seasons of opera in this house. Built 1933-1944 by architect Sigurd Lewerentz and, until 1992, known as the Malmö City Theatre accommodating several different organizations, the Opera House is one of the largest auditoriums in Scandinavia with 1508 seats, created in the form of an enclosed amphitheatre in order to allow for the greatest viewing possibility. It is used for opera, operetta, and musical performances. Influenced by German director Max Reinhardt, a large revolving stage was constructed. The foyer is considered to be beautiful, with its open surfaces and marble staircases, and it is adorned with a number of works of art by artists such as Carl Milles and Isaac Grünewald. An offshoot of the opera company, whose musical director was Gintaras Rinkevicius and Joseph Swensen 2006-2011, is the program of opera designed for children ages 3 to 19. This is known as Operaverkstan; it also plans to introduce classic operas for its audience, and sometimes children participate in the productions.
