Los Baños

Los Baños is a first class urban municipality in the province of Laguna, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 101,884 inhabitants. It has a total land area of 56.5 square kilometers and is bordered on the south and southwest by Mount Makiling, on the north by Laguna de Bay, on the northwest by Calamba City and on the east by the town of Bay. The town is located 63 kilometres southeast of Manila and is accessible via the South Luzon Expressway. The municipality lies on the northern slopes of the long dormant volcano Mount Makiling and is known among tourists for its hot spring resorts. Los Baños also hosts the University of the Philippines, along with other foreign and local and international research centers, such as the International Rice Research Institute, the ASEAN Center for Biodiversity, the Philippine Rice Research Institute, Philippine Carabao Center at UPLB, and SEAMEO-SEARCA, making the town a temporary home for tens of thousands of undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and expatriates. Aside from its importance in academics, science and research, Los Baños is a well-known tourist destination. Because of the town's proximity to Metro Manila, Los Baños' hot spring resorts are frequent weekend or summer getaways for residents of the vast metropolis and tourists from other places in the Philippines and abroad. Tourists who visit Los Baños also come to the several native delicacies stores in the town to buy the town's famous Buko pie .

Lucban

The Municipality of Lucban is a second-class municipality in the province of Quezon, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 46,698 people. It is located at the foot of Mount Banahaw. Lucban is famous for its annual Pahiyas Festival, which is held every May 15 in honor of San Isidro Labrador the Farmer.

San Pablo City

San Pablo is a first class city in the southern portion of Laguna province, Philippines, is one of the country's oldest cities. By land area, it is the largest in the province of Laguna. With a population of 248,890 people in the 2010 census, it ranks fifth within the province. The city is more popularly known as the "City of Seven Lakes" , referring to the Seven Lakes of San Pablo: Lake Sampaloc , Lake Palakpakin, Lake Bunot, Lakes Pandin and Yambo, Lake Muhikap, and Lake Calibato. San Pablo was part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lipa since 1910. On November 28, 1967, it became an independent diocese and became the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Pablo.

Taal Lake

Taal Lake is a freshwater lake in the province of Batangas, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. The lake fills Taal Caldera, a large volcanic caldera formed by very large eruptions between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago. It is the country's third largest lake after Laguna de Bay and Lake Lanao. Volcano Island, the location of Taal Volcano's historical eruptions and responsible for the lake's sulfuric content, lies near the center of the lake. There is a crater lake on Volcano Island. Known as the Yellow Lake or the Main Crater Lake, it contains its own small island, Vulcan Point. Vulcan Point was thought to be the largest third order lake in the world but Treasure Island is much bigger and is thought to be the world largest, and is also on a freshwater lake.

Taal Volcano

Taal Volcano is a complex volcano located on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. It is the second most active volcano in the Philippines with 33 historical eruptions. All of these eruptions are concentrated on Volcano Island, an island near the middle of Taal Lake. The lake partially fills Taal Caldera, which was formed by prehistoric eruptions between 140,000 and 5,380 BP. Viewed from Tagaytay Ridge, Taal Volcano and Lake presents one of the most picturesque and attractive views in the Philippines. It is located about 50 km south of the capital of the country, the city of Manila. The volcano had several violent eruptions in the past causing loss of life in the island and the populated areas surrounding the lake, with the death toll estimated at around 5,000 to 6,000. Because of its proximity to populated areas and its eruptive history, the volcano was designated a Decade Volcano, worthy of close study to prevent future natural disasters. All volcanoes of the Philippines are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Mount Banahaw

Mount Banahaw is an active volcano on Luzon in the Philippines. The three-peaked volcano complex is located between the provinces of Laguna and Quezon and is the tallest mountain in the CALABARZON region dominating the landscape for miles around. The mountain is considered by many as a "Holy mountain" and is popular among pilgrims along with mountain climbers. Banahaw is a national park and a protected area in the Philippines since 1941, and is now called Mount Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Landscape covering 10,901 hectares of land.

Laguna Volcanic Field

The Laguna Volcanic Field, also known as the San Pablo Volcanic Field, is a volcanic field in the Philippines, located between Laguna de Bay, Mount Banahaw volcano complex and Mount Malepunyo range. It is part of the larger Southwestern Luzon Volcanic Field . From Manila, it is about 50 kilometres southeast to Mount Makiling, its most prominent volcanic feature. The field is composed of over 200 dormant and monogenetic maars, crater lakes, scoria cones, and stratovolcanoes, the tallest of which is Mount Makiling at 1,090 m in elevation. Many of the maars are aligned along a NE-SW trend. Three generations of maars are present, with the oldest being sediment-filled, like the ones found in Calauan. The youngest maars contain deep lakes with many concentrated in the city of San Pablo. The youngest maar, 1.2-kilometre wide Sampaloc Lake was formed about 500–700 years ago according to local legend, the last major activity in the volcanic field. Volcanism is still evident through the presence of geothermal areas like mud and hot springs. The areas south of Mt. Makiling is the site of one of the earliest geothermal plants in the country.

Laguna de Bay

Laguna de Baý is the largest lake in the Philippines located east of Metro Manila between the provinces of Laguna to the south and Rizal to the north. The freshwater lake has a surface area of 911-949 km², with an average depth of about 2.8 metres and an elevation of about 1 metre above sea level. The lake is shaped like a stylized W, with two peninsulas jutting out from the northern shore. Between these peninsulas, the middle lobe fills the large volcanic Laguna Caldera. In the middle of the lake is the large island of Talim, which falls under the jurisdiction of the towns of Binangonan and Cardona in Rizal province. The lake is one of the primary sources of freshwater fish in the country. Its water drains to Manila Bay via the Pasig River.

Tadlac Lake

Tadlac Lake, also colloquially known as Alligator Lake, is a freshwater crater lake located in Barangay Tadlac, in the municipality of Los Baños of Laguna province in the Philippines. The lake-filled maar is located along the southern shore of Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the country, with Alligator Lake protruding out of the shore of the larger lake. If not for its slightly-elevated crater rim, Alligator Lake would be wholly engulfed by Laguna de Bay. The crater lake is one of the maars of the Laguna Volcanic Field. It is listed as one of the inactive volcanos in the Philippines by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology . Lake overturns or carbon dioxide eruption from deep within, locally called as langal, normally occurs during the months of December to February. During this period some indigenous fishes of the lake are often observed gasping for air near the lake surface. Prior to the introduction of aquaculture, Alligator Lake was considered as an oligotrophic lake, having low nutrient content and low algal production, resulting in very clear water with high drinking-water quality.

Paete

Paete is a fourth class municipality in the province of Laguna, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 23,523 people. The town, pronounced Pī-té, long i, short guttural ê, is located at the northeastern part of Laguna, along the shores of picturesque Laguna de Bay. It was founded in 1580 by Spanish friars Juan de Plasencia and Diego de Oropesa of the Franciscan Order. It is believed that the earliest inhabitants were of Malay lineage, coming all the way from Borneo in their swift and sturdy boats called "Balangay".

Lipa , officially the City of Lipa , is a first class component city in the province of Batangas in the Philippines. It is one of the three cities in Batangas (the others are Batangas City and Tanauan). It is located 78 kilometres south of Manila and has a population of 283,468 people according to the 2010 census. The city is named after a species of tree in the Urticaceae family, lipa (Dendrocnide meyeniana), known for the stinging trichomes on its twigs. Lipa City is a recreational, religious, commercial, industrial and educational center. The Southern Tagalog Arterial Road and South Luzon Expressway provide access to Batangas City and Metro Manila.

Antipolo

Antipolo City, officially the City of Antipolo , is a city in the Philippines located in the province of Rizal; about 25 kilometres east of Manila. It is the largest city in the CALABARZON Region. It is also the seventh most populous city in the country with a population of 677,741 in 2010. Antipolo was converted from a municipality into a component city of Rizal Province on April 4, 1998, under Republic Act No. 8508. A new provincial capitol building was inaugurated in the city in March 2009 to replace the old capitol in Pasig which has long been outside the jurisdiction of Rizal Province; after Pasig was included in Metro Manila in 1975. With the transfer of the provincial government to Antipolo, it is highly favored to be officially designated as the new capital of the province. On March 14, 2011, Antipolo was declared a "highly-urbanized city" by President Benigno Aquino; such proclamation however still needs to be ratified in a plebiscite. The city is popular for being a pilgrimage site. It prides itself as the "Pilgrimage Capital of the Philippines." The Marian image of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage or the Virgin of Antipolo, which was brought in from Mexico in 1626, and enshrined in the Antipolo Cathedral has a continuous following among Filipino Catholics since the Spanish era. A popular custom of pilgrims to the Virgin of Antipolo is the trek going to its shrine on the eves of Good Friday and May 1, from various locations in Rizal Province and Metro Manila. Some pilgrims would begin the trek from Quiapo Church in Downtown Manila following the procession of the image. There is also an existing custom to have new cars blessed at the church in the belief that this will ensure the safety of the car and its passengers. Its higher elevation than that of Metro Manila affords it a scenic view of the metropolis, especially at night. Its locally grown mangoes and cashews are popular among tourists, as well as suman a local delicacy made out of glutinous rice. The Hinulugang Taktak National Park, which was once a popular summer get-away is being restored to become again one of the city's primary attractions.

Cuartel de Santo Domingo, also known as Fort Sto. Domingo and Intramuros of Sta. Rosa, is an old two-storey Spanish barracks building in Santa Rosa, Laguna in the Philippines. It is currently used as the headquarters of the Special Action Force of the Philippine National Police.

Lake Palakpakin

Lake Palakpakin is one of the Seven Lakes of San Pablo in Laguna, Philippines. Palakpakin is located in Brgy. San Buenaventura, San Pablo City. With an area of 43 hectares, it has a maximum depth of 7.5 meters. Residents around the lake rely on income from fishpens and fishcages that grow cultured tilapia and silver carps.

Catalina has an area of 14.5 hectares, and it is one of the main suppliers of water in the city. The waters of San Pablo Lakes provide a generous source of tilapia for Metro Manila and suburbs.

Santa Rosa is a city in the province of Laguna, Philippines. The city, predominantly a suburban residential community of Metro Manila, lies 38 kilometres south of Manila via the South Luzon Expressway. Santa Rosa is also the exit point along the expressway to go to Tagaytay. According to the 2010 census, the city has a population of 284,670 inhabitants, making it the third largest local government unit in Laguna after Calamba and San Pedro. Santa Rosa was initially known for the Coca-Cola and Toyota manufacturing plants in its industrial estates. Recently, it has also become popular for being the site of Enchanted Kingdom, a local theme park, as well as several housing developments. This city contains the 3rd largest complex in Laguna, Paseo de Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa became a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 9264, which was ratified by its residents on July 10, 2004.

Taal is a third class municipality in the province of Batangas, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 51,503 people. Taal is famous for its old ancestral houses. Its poblacion (central business district) is designated as a National Historical Landmark. It is also known as the Balisong and Barong Tagalog Capital of the Philippines.

Only 4.5 km from the city proper, Bunot is known for its cultured tilapia and fishpens for Nilotica fingerlings. Bunot has a normal surface area of 30.5 hectares with a maximum depth of 23 meter. Bunot is a convenient site for picnics. It is a real haven for nature lovers. Ideal for swimming and relaxation.

Limestone tombs of Kamhantik

The Limestone Tombs of Kamhantik is an excavated remains of a thousand-year-old village found in the jungles of Mount Maclayao in Sitio Kamhantik within the Buenavista Protected Landscape of Mulanay, Quezon, Philippines. It is composed of fifteen limestone coffins that can be dated back from the period of 10th to 14th century based on one of National Museum's top archaeologist "a complex archaeological site with both habitation and burial remains from the period of approximately 10th to the 14th century ... the first of its kind in the Philippines having carved limestone tombs."

Lake Calibato

Lake Calibato is one of the seven crater lakes collectively called "Pitong Lawa" or Seven Lakes of San Pablo in Laguna. The lake is situated in Brgy. Sto. Angel in San Pablo City. Calibato has an area of 42 hectares and maximum depth of 135 meters. Calibatos maximum water capacity is approximately 29,600 cubic meters. Its supplies the city and nearby towns with abundant fish and aquatic plants. The lake is the deepest recorded among the seven-lake system; no recorded depths are available for Muhikap.

Lake Tikub

Lake Tikub is a nearly circular crater lake located in the province of Quezon, in the Philippines. The circumference of the lake is elevated and thick with foliage that steeply slopes down to the shore of the lake. The lake is located at the foot of Mount Malepunyo, and nearby is Mount Banahaw, in Brgy. Ayusan, in the town of Tiaong, Quezon. Access to the lake is through Brgy. San Pedro.

Hinulugang Taktak is a waterfall in the Philippines found in the province of Rizal on Luzon island. The waterfall area has been designated as a National Park by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and is one of the two most popular tourist spots in Antipolo, Rizals capital, the other being the Antipolo Cathedral. In 1990, the waterfall has also been proclaimed as a National Historical Shrine under Republic Act No. 6964. The waters are polluted and not suitable for swimming But many LGUs and NGUs are acting to save its natural beauty by efforts to preserve its upper part for park use, and not for abusive, trash use.

Pagsanjan Falls

Pagsanjan Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in the Philippines. Located in the province of Laguna, the falls is one of the major tourist attractions of the region. The three-drop waterfall is reached by a river trip on dugout canoe, known locally as Shooting the rapids, originating from the municipality of Pagsanjan. The falls can also be reached from the top by a short hike from Cavinti. The boat ride has been an attraction since the Spanish Colonial Era with the oldest written account in 1894. The town of Pagsanjan lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Balanac River and the Bumbungan River .

Mount Makiling

Mount Makiling, or Mount Maquiling, is a dormant volcano in Laguna province on the island of Luzon, Philippines. The mountain rises to an elevation of 1,090 m above mean sea level and is the highest feature of the Laguna Volcanic Field. The volcano has no recorded historic eruption but volcanism is still evident through geothermal features like mud spring and hot springs. South of the mountain is the Makiling-Banahaw Geothermal Plant. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology classify the volcano as potentially active. Mount Makiling is a state-owned forest reserve administered by the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. Prior its transfer to the university, the mountain was the first national park of the Philippines. Mount Makiling National Park was established on February 23, 1933 by Proc. No. 552. However, it was decommissioned as a national park on June 20, 1963 by Republic Act no. 3523 when it was transferred to the University for use in forestry education and information. Now known as Mount Makiling Forest Reserve, it was declared an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2013.

Imus Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar, commonly known as the Imus Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral church in the city of Imus, in the province of Cavite, Philippines. It is the seat of the bishop of the Diocese of Imus, the diocese that has jurisdiction of all the Catholic parishes in Cavite. The patroness of the city and of the diocese is the Nuestra Señora del Pilar . Saint John the Baptist is also considered as a patron saint of the city. The city fiesta is celebrated annually every October 12. Part of the celebration is the traditional dance-procession called karakol.

Lipa Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian, commonly known as the Lipa Cathedral, is a Romanesque church in Lipa, Batangas, Philippines. The cathedral serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Lipa. The Cathedral was chosen as the seat of the then Diocese of the Lipa in 1910. Detached from the Archdiocese of Manila and canonically erected by Pope St. Pius X, it comprised what are today the provinces of Batangas, Quezon, Aurora, Laguna, Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, and part of the Camarines area.
