Fredrikstad

Fredrikstad is a city and municipality in Østfold county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Fredrikstad. The city of Fredrikstad was founded in 1567 by King Frederick II, and established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The rural municipality of Glemmen was merged with Fredrikstad on 1 January 1964. The rural municipalities of Borge, Onsøy, Kråkerøy, and Rolvsøy were merged with Fredrikstad on 1 January 1994. The city straddles the river Glomma where it meets the Skagerrak. Along with neighboring Sarpsborg, Fredrikstad forms the fifth largest city in Norway: Fredrikstad/Sarpsborg. As of 1 January 2013, according to Statistics Norway, these two municipalities have a total population of 128,916 with 75,583 in Fredrikstad and 53,333 in Sarpsborg. Fredrikstad was built at the mouth of Glomma as a replacement after Sarpsborg upstream) was burned down by the Swedes. Almost half the population of Sarpsborg stayed behind, and rebuilt their old town at its original site. The city centre is on the west bank of the Glomma, while the old town on the east bank is Northern Europe's best preserved fortified town. Fredrikstad used to have a large sawmill industry and was an important harbour for timber export, then later on shipbuilding, until the main yard was closed in the 1980s. The main industries are currently various chemical plants and other light industry. In 2005, Fredrikstad was the final host port for the Tall Ships' Race, attracting thousands to the city.

Ørje

Ørje is the administrative centre of Marker municipality, Norway, not far from the Swedish border. Its population (2013)) is 1,881. Ørje is known for its canal museum and steamboat club, military fortifications from 1905 and locks. Engebret Soot built the first Norwegian canal locks at Ørje in the years 1857-1860 (no:Ørje sluser). The total lift of the locks are 10 meters divided on 3 steps. The locks are situated between the lakes "Rødenessjøen" and "Øymarksjøen" as a part of the Halden Waterway System. Ørje was founded in the 1880s around a timber-processing mill. In the decades following the Second World War, Ørje developed substantial industry and commerce. Today, the service sector, including tourism have party replaced manufacture and agriculture/forestry as the most important economic sectors.

Askim

Askim is a town and a municipality in Østfold county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Askim. Askim was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Askim is the largest population centre in Indre Østfold with 15 315 inhabitants (2012), and surves as a regional senter for 9 municipalities in Indre Østfold. It lies next to the longest river in Norway, Glomma, which forms the border with Spydeberg to the north and west, and Skiptvet to the south. Askim also borders Trøgstad to the northeast and Eidsberg to the southeast. Askim produces large amounts of hydroelectricity at three dams. From upstream to downstream: Solbergfoss, Kykkelsrud, then Vamma. There was nickel mining at Kykkelsrud at the turn of the 20th century. These mines are also one of the few places where "kulenoritt" is found. An industrial city for most of the 20th century, the main employer, Viking, shut down its rubber product manufaction in 1991. Glava is the main employer today.

Fredrikstad Cathedral

Fredrikstad Cathedral is a cathedral of the Church of Norway, located in Fredrikstad, Norway in the site of the Diocese of Borg. It was designed by architect Ferdinand Waldemar Lühr to be a parish church. It was built between 1879 and 1880 in the Gothic Revival style of brick, with a longitudinal plan in the form of a Latin cross. It has a single tower of 72 m in height at the western end, which is part of the main facade. It was consecrated on 13 October 1880, when it was known as Fredrikstad Vestre kirke . The church was restored in 1954, was elevated to cathedral status in 1969, when it created the new Diocese of Borg, based in Fredrikstad. Emphasize its stained glass work of Emanuel Vigeland, 1917, and the main altarpiece, a painting by Axel Revold. It has space for 1100 people.

Gressvik

Gressvik is a village located in the municipality of Fredrikstad, Norway. The river named Seut separates Gressvik from the city of Fredrikstad. Gressvik stretches from Ørebekk in the north, to Rød and Viker in the south. Consisting only of two farms and a few other houses before 1860, it eventually grew to a considerable settlement, following the establishment of a sawmill by Julius Nicolai Jacobsen. The centre of Gressvik is called "The Market", and functions as a shopping street. There are two schools for children aged 6-13 in Gressvik, Rød Barneskole and Hurrød Barneskole. Rød Barneskole is for students living in Oksviken, Viker, Krosnes, Rød and Dale. At Hurrød Barneskole, the students are from the centre of Gressvik. When the children are between 13-16 years of age, they are pupils at Gressvik Ungdomsskole.

Elingård

Elingård is a manor house and an estate located at Fredrikstad, in Østfold, Norway. The manor is situated on Onsøy outside of Fredrikstad. Elingård estate was owned by members of the Norwegian noble family Gyldenhorn in the 15th century and of the noble family Brockenhuus in the 16th century. Chancellor of Norway Jens Bjelke acquired the estate through marriage with Sophie Brockenhuus in 1610, and it was later inherited by his son, Admiral Henrik Bjelke. Elingård burned down in 1645. In the 18th century the estate was transferred to the Huitfeldt family through marriage. The main building burned down again in 1746, and the current manor dates from 1749. In 1778 the estate was sold to Hans Møller. It has later had various owners, including Libertas which used the manor as conference center. Elingaard is now owned by Fredrikstad Museum. Elingaard Manor is operated today as a museum and used as venue for social events and by local associations.

Værne Kloster

Værne Kloster is a manor and former abbey in the municipality of Rygge in Østfold, Norway. Today only ruins of the monastery remain. Originally a royal farm, King Sverre of Norway established a Knights Hospitaller abbey at Værne around 1200. The facility also served as hospital for the king's army until 1308, when King Haakon V established a hospital for this purpose at St Mary's Church, Oslo. Værne monastery was also a place of pilgrimage. The abbey was disestablished and placed under the crown in 1532. The buildings were burned down in 1570 in connection with the Northern Seven Years' War. The manor with adjacent farms was leased until 1675, when it was privatized. Later owners of Værne Kloster included Valentin Christian Wilhelm Sibbern, Georg Sibbern. The first antiquarian study of the ruins was made in 1812 by Lorentz Diderich Kluwer .

Basmo Fortress

Basmo fortress is located in the north-western part of Marker municipality in Østfold near the Swedish border on an isolated mountain outcropping between Rødenessjøen and Hemnessjøen. It was constructed in the 1680s and was abandoned after 62 years of service in 1745. The first mention of this Norwegian fortress is in a letter from Field Marshal Wedel Jarlsberg to the King in 1683. Major General Johan Caspar von Cicignon developed the plans. During the Great Northern War it was manned by up to 1,350 men. On the night of March 9, 1716, the pyres on the mountaintops announced that Swedish King Charles XII had crossed the border with 1,000 men. Moving rapidly, he found the border poorly guarded and moved with cavalry to Høland parsonage. Norwegian troops stationed in the district were assembled by the Basmo commander, Colonel Kruse, who attacked the Swedes in a bloody battle. Charles XII barely escaped capture, but the tide was soon turned against the outnumbered Norwegians, and Kruse, badly wounded, was captured. The Swedes went on to occupy Christiania without resistance on March 21, 1716, but were ultimately repulsed. Basmo was also in the path of invading Swedish troops during Charles XII’s second unsuccessful invasion in 1718.

Skiptvet Church

Skiptvet Church is a medieval stone church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Skiptvet in Østfold County, Norway. Supposedly built in the second half of the 12th century (the date is not documented), it stands on a ridge west of the Glomma River. The church belongs to the Church of Norway and is part of the Deanery of Vestre Borgesyssel in the Diocese of Borg. The original church burned in 1762 and parts of it were rebuilt. None of the original furnishings remain. The current altarpiece portraying the Eucharist was painted by Albert Lobech in 1768 and was kept by the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History until 1937, when the church was restored by Harald Sund. The baptismal font is made of wood and was created by Harald Sund and Helge Amundsen. There is a cemetery next to the church.

Refsnes Gods

Refsnes Gods is a hotel near the town of Moss, Norway, on the island of Jeløy. According to Frommer's travel guide, it is "the most elegant resort in the environs of Oslo." The building was originally constructed in 1767 as a pleasure pavilion. It contains a notable art collection. "Refsnes" stems from the Norwegian word "rif" due to a reef in the Oslofjord just outside the mansion. "Gods" means mansion in Norwegian. Since the new owners, Gunn and Widar Salbuvik, took over in 1998, a large number of unique pieces of art have found a new home at Refsnes Gods. Every guest room and all the common areas have works of a dedicated artist displayed. More than 400 pieces from 90 well-known artists are represented. The list of the artists include names like: Andy Warhol, Edvard Munch, Therese Nordtvedt, Carl Nesjar, Kjell Nupen, Håkon Bleken, Frans Widerberg, Jacob Weidemann. Three works by Munch were stolen from the hotel in March 2005; they were shortly recovered, although one of the works was damaged during the robbery. The resort is also known for its wine cellar.

Melløs Stadion

Melløs Stadion is a multi-purpose stadium in Melløs borough in Moss, Norway. It is currently used mostly for football contests and is the home stadium of Moss FK. The stadium has a capacity around 10,000 people and was opened in 1939. The current attendance record is 10,085 people in a neighbor derby against Fredrikstad FK in 2003. The stadium was used for the 1997 UEFA Women's Championship. The venue has hosted Norway national under-21 football team matches twice, playing 0–0 against Belgium on 11 September 1979 and 0–2 against Denmark on 22 August 2007. Melløs Stadion is also used for athletics. In 1983 it got rubber track as the first stadium in Østfold county, and in 1990 the national athletics championships were held there. Today Moss FK is planning to renew the stadium to become an intimate football stadium with a capacity of 8,000 people, only seated. Following these plans, the athletics parts of the stadium will be moved to a nearby football training field.

Fredrikstad Stadion

The Fredrikstad Stadion is a football stadium in Fredrikstad, Norway and home of the Norwegian First Division team Fredrikstad FK. It is located in an area which formerly used to be a large shipyard (locally known as Værste or FMV), but which nowadays is the technological centre of the city, with several companies and a college. The frontage of the stadium is built to replicate the original halls of the workshop. This makes it architecturally unique. The stadium was built to replace Old Fredrikstad Stadion, which was considered to be one of the eldest and most worn-out stadium in the country. The total capacity is approximately 12,560, all seated. There is a possibility to expand it furthermore, to some 15,000 seats. The venue has hosted Norway national under-21 football team matches five times, playing 0–1 against Netherlands on 7 September 2007, 2–1 against Switzerland on 12 September 2007, 0–0 against Macedonia on 9 September 2008, 1–3 against Croatia on 5 September 2009 and 0–1 against Serbia on 9 September 2009. In a 2012 survey carried out by the Norwegian Players' Association among away-team captains, Fredrikstad Stadion was ranked as the sixth, with a score of 4.20 on a scale from one to five.

Old Fredrikstad Stadion

Fredrikstad Stadion was the homeground of the Norwegian Premier League side Fredrikstad FK until the end of the 2006 season, due to their new and modernized stadium at the borough of Kråkerøy, only a few minutes away from the city center. The venue has hosted the Norwegian Athletics Championships in 1915 and 1921. The venue has hosted Norway national under-21 football team matches times, playing 1–0 against Iceland on 30 May 1978, 2–3 against Wales on 20 September 1983 and 1–0 against Netherlands on 22 September 1992. The total capacity of the stadium was approximately 10,500. The spectator's record is approximately 15,000. The old stadium had a long history since it was built in the 1920s. But it was nonetheless highly worn out and out of date at the end. The stadium no longer exists, it was condemned to make place for flats and offices in the winter 2011/2012.

Rudskogen

Rudskogen Motorsenter is Norway’s oldest asphalt race circuit, opened May 20, 1990. In 2006 the Norwegian government selected Rudskogen Motorsenter as the main national motorsport facility and as a result the circuit is undergoing significant development, with the new circuit design by Hermann Tilke. The current motorcycle and car racing track at Rudskogen Motorsenter is 3.254 km long, set in rolling forest terrain and considered technically demanding for drivers. The longest straight is 640 m and the elevation difference is 42 m . Races for cars and bikes are arranged there in a variety of classes and the track is also hired out privately for corporate events and organisational training, for example for emergency services personnel. The Rudskogen karting track, located at the same facility, is 1.2 km long and satisfies international karting standards. A range of large scale events have taken place at this track including a round of the European Karting Championship in 2005. Data from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute shows that the circuit at Rudskogen can be in use for 8 weeks longer per year than other existing race circuits in Norway, because of the southerly location.
