Fuji-Q Highland

Fuji-Q Highland is an amusement park in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan. The theme park is near the base of Mount Fuji. It has a number of roller coasters, as well as two haunted attractions: The Haunted Hospital, the worlds second largest haunted attraction, and the newly built Hopeless Fortress. Other attractions include Thomas Land, a childrens area with a Thomas the Tank Engine theme and attractions themed to Gundam and Evangelion. In 2006, on the 9th Season of The Amazing Race, the final 3 teams came here and rode Tondemina, Dodonpa and Fujiyama looking for a clue to their next destination. Fuji-Qs most famous roller coasters are the following: Fujiyama, 79 metres tall, 130 km/h, opened in 1996 and was once the worlds tallest roller coaster. As of 2007 it is the worlds 8th tallest, 5th longest, and 10th fastest roller coaster. Dodonpa, 52 metres tall, 172 km/h, opened in 2001 and was once the worlds fastest roller coaster. As of 2013 it is the 4th fastest in the world but still has the highest acceleration at launch time. Eejanaika, 76 metres tall, 126 km/h, opened in 2006 and is only the second "4th Dimension roller coaster" ever built . As a "4th dimension" roller coaster its seats can rotate 360 degrees forward or backward in a controlled spin, thus allowing Eejanaika to invert 14 different times, even though the actual track inverts only three times. It surpasses the first built "4th dimension" roller coaster, X², in both height and speed. Takabisha, opened on 16 July 2011, contains a 121° freefall, as well as seven major twists over 1000 metres of track, and a drop of 43 metres.

Kofu

Kōfu is the capital city of Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan. As of May 1, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 197,540, with 85,794 households and a population density of 929.99 persons per km2. The total area is 212.41 km2.

Thomas Land

Thomas Land is the worlds first Thomas Friends theme park, and opened in 1998. It is located at the Fuji-Q Highland, an amusement park in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan. Attractions include "The Great Gatagoto Adventure", a Thomas Land 3D Theater, "Thomas Percys Fun Ride", "GO! GO! Bulstrode", self-drive vehicles, Mischievous Cranky, Rock n Roll Duncan, a Thomas-themed hedge maze, and monuments to Thomas and Percy for photo opportunities. Thomas Land is different from the smaller Thomas Town attractions in Japan, one in Shinminato, and the other in Kurashiki.

Kitashōji Falls

Kitashōji Falls is a waterfall in northern Yamanashi Prefecture Japan, on the Ishiutoro River, an upper tributary of the Fuji River. It is located in the Minami Alps National Park, in the city of Hokuto. The falls have a width of 35 metres and a drop of 121 metres . The Kitashōji Falls is listed as one of the "Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls", in a listing published by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment in 1990. The falls drop down a granite cliff, which is part of the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line in three cascades. Below the main falls is the Kudan Falls, with a width of 20 metres and a drop of 40 metres .

Senga Falls

Senga Falls is a waterfall in northern Kōfu, Yamanashi Prefecture Japan, on the Arakawa River, an upper tributary of the Fuji River. It is located in the Shōsenkyō canyon, which is recognized by the national government as one of the protected Special Places of Scenic Beauty. The Senga Falls is listed as one of the "Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls", in a listing published by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment in 1990. Located within a 5-minute walk from a parking lot, a large number of tourists visit during the autumn foliage season.

Eejanaika

Eejanaika is a steel 4th Dimension roller coaster at Fuji-Q Highland in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan. The ride is the worlds second 4th Dimension coaster, the first being X at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, United States. Eejanaika is the taller, faster, and longer of the two. Eejanaika, designed by SS Arrow, is a "4th Dimension" coaster, a design in which the seats can rotate forward or backward 360 degrees in a controlled spin. This is achieved by having four rails on the track: two of these are running rails while the other two are for spin control. The two rails that control the spin of the seats move up and down relative to the track and spin the seats using a rack and pinion gear mechanism. Eejanaika is pronounced "Ee ja nai ka" and written in Japanese as "ええじゃないか", but the roller coasters official spelling turns the second "え" upside down. Eejanaika has several meanings, but means "Aint it great!" According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Eejanaika is the roller coaster with the most inversions in the world. Throughout the ride, the riders go through 14 inversions. However, most of these inversions are accomplished by spinning the seats rather than actually inverting the track. The Roller Coaster DataBase does not acknowledge these seat inversions for the purpose of record-holding.

Kuon-ji

Kuon-ji is a major temple in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. Founded by Nichiren in 1281 it is today the head temple of Nichiren Shū. Locally it is referred to as the Minobu-san Temple, after the mountain upon which it is built. After leaving Kamakura Nichiren was invited by the magistrate Nambu Sanenaga to stay on his property in 1274. Soon after his arrival Nichiren set up a hermitage that became a centre of learning to Nichirens disciples and adherents. The original dwelling became too small and in 1281 Nichiren founded the temple nearby and named it Minobusan Kuon-ji. Following Nichirens wishes his ashes were brought to the temple and are enshrined in a mausoleum on the temple grounds. While the Ikegami Honmon-ji is also Nichiren Shūs administrative centre, Kuon-ji today plays an important role as a place of learning for the schools training of novices. It is famous for its 287 steps of stone stairs known locally as "the steps of enlightenment", which are climbed by chanting pilgrims regularly each year. The golden dragon painted on the black ceiling of the main temple is a notable feature usually pointed out by monks at the temple as the dragon has five toes, making it a Japanese dragon. The blossoming of thousands of cherry trees, including the hundred-year-old weeping cherry tree in the garden, also makes this temple a popular tourist destination. Over 1.5 million people visit the temple annually. It is reached by bus or car and then climbing the 287 steps, or alternatively scaling the sloping road which curves around the back of the temple. Behind the temple proper is a cable car which takes tourists and pilgrims up to the top of the mountain and further temple buildings.

Mount Aino

Mount Aino, or Ainodake, is a peak of the Akaishi Mountains−Southern Alps, in Minami Alps National Park, Japan. At 3,189 m, it is the fourth tallest peak in Japan and the second highest in the Akaishi Mountains. its peak lies on the border of Aoi-ku and Shizuoka in Shizuoka Prefecture, and of Minami-Alps in Yamanashi Prefecture. Mount Aino is one of the landmark 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.

Mount Kita

Mount Kita is a mountain of the Akaishi Mountains−"Southern Alps", in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. It is the second tallest mountain in Japan, after Mount Fuji, and is known as "the Leader of the Southern Alps". It is included in the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. It is located in Minami Alps National Park, near the city of Minami-Alps.

Tenjō-Yama Park Mt. Kachi Kachi Ropeway

The Tenjō-Yama Park Mt. Kachi Kachi Ropeway (天上山公園カチカチ山ロープウェイ, Tenjōyama Kōen Kachikachiyama Rōpuwei), officially the Lake Kawaguchi Mt. Tenjō Ropeway (河口湖天上山ロープウェイ, Kawaguchiko Tenjōyama Rōpuwei), is a Japanese aerial lift line in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi, operated by Fuji Kyuko. Opened in 1959, the line climbs Mount Tenjō from the shores of Lake Kawaguchi, one of the Fuji Five Lakes. The line name comes from Kachi-kachi Yama (lit. "Mt. Kachikachi"), a folktale which took place on the mountain. The observatory has a view of the lake, as well as Aokigahara forest, and Mount Fuji.

Maizuru Castle Park

Maizuru Castle Park is a park and historical site in Kofu, Yamanashi, Japan. It contains the ruins of Kōfu Castle, also called Maizuru Castle, which is about 400 years old and has been designated as a Yamanashi Historical Site. Maizuru Castle Park is a place of rest and relaxation for the people of Yamanashi Prefecture.

Chichibu Tama Kai National Park

Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park is a national park in Japan at the intersection of Saitama, Yamanashi, Nagano and Tokyo Prefectures. With eight peaks over 2000 m scattered over 1250 km², there are numerous hiking trails and ancient shrines. The best known landmarks are Mount Mitsumine, home to the 2000-year-old Mitsumine Shrine; and Mount Mitake, with the Musashi-Mitake Shrine. The park has sources of major rivers such as the Arakawa River, Shinano River, Tama River, and Fuefuki River .

Mount Kaikoma

Mount Kaikoma is a mountain of the Akaishi Mountains, located on the border of Hokuto in Yamanashi Prefecture, and Ina in Nagano Prefecture, in the Chūbu region of Japan.

Seihaku-ji

Seihaku-ji is a Myōshin-ji Rinzai school Zen temple in Yamanashi, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. It is said to have been founded in 1333 after a dream by Ashikaga Takauji. The temple was seriously damaged by fire in 1682. The Butsuden of 1415, a 3x3 bay structure with mokoshi, was designated a National Treasure in 1955. Its precise construction date was learned from items found during dismantling for repairs in 1917. Its ranma was damaged by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake. The kuri of 1689-93 is representative of Edo period priests quarters in the region and was designated an Important Cultural Property in 2005.

Mount Nōtori

Mount Nōtori , or Nōtoridake, is one of the major peaks in the Akaishi Mountains, along with Mount Kita and Mount Aino. The 3,026 m peak lies to the south of the other mountains, spanning the town of Hayakawa in Yamanashi Prefecture and Aoi-ku in the city of Shizuoka, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

Hakushu distillery

Hakushu distillery is a Japanese whisky distillery. It is owned by the Suntory group, and situated in the Toribara locality of the former town of Hakushū , in the Yamanashi Prefecture, Chūbu region, Japan. The distillery was established in 1973, in the forest on the slopes of Mount Kaikoma . In 1981, it was expanded by the commissioning of a second, Hakushu East, site, near the original site, now called Hakushu West. All production is now focused on the new site.

Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts

The Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts is a gallery of photography in the Kiyosato region of the city of Hokuto, Yamanashi . The gallery was founded in 1995; Eikoh Hosoe has been its director since its inception. The gallery, which also refers to itself as "K*MoPA", "embraces photographic art made in the affirmation of life"; this does not exclude harsh images. It attempts to acquire prints of archival quality, and is particularly keen to encourage younger photographers to submit their work for consideration. The work of young photographers that the gallery accepts is exhibited in an annual series of "Young Portfolio" exhibitions, perhaps inspired by a major opening exhibition in which twenty-five well-established Japanese photographers exhibited work that they had done while still in their twenties. Exhibitions have generally been thematic, but photographers with solo retrospectives have included Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Shisei Kuwabara and others. Exhibition catalogues are available directly from the museum. The closest station to the gallery is Kiyosato Station, on the Koumi Line.

Kōgaku-ji

Kōgaku-ji, originally Kōgaku-an, is one of fourteen autonomous branches of the Rinzai school of Japanese Zen, founded in 1380 by Bassui Tokushō. The temple is located in southern Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan near Mount Fuji. Due to its great popularity under the leadership of Bassui, the Emperor Go-Kameyama of the late 14th century declared it "a temple to pray for the nation" . The name was changed to Kōgaku-ji in the 16th century through the petitioning of General Takeda Shingen. In 1782 much of the original temple complex was destroyed in a fire, and after it was declared the head temple of the Kogaku-ji branch it was fully restored in 1908. Kōgaku-ji governs eight sub-temples and fifty temple affiliates.

The total area was 212.41 square kilometres . Kōfu's name means "capital of Kai Province". During the Sengoku period, it was famous as the stronghold of Takeda Shingen.

Dodonpa, an SS Worldwide roller coaster located at the Fuji-Q Highland Amusement Park in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan, is distinguished as the second roller coaster ever to utilize the power of compressed air to launch its trains. This steel roller coaster made its debut on 21 December 2001, immediately making headlines when it broke two records. First, it attained the title of fastest roller coaster in the world, previously shared by Superman: The Escape and Tower of Terror. Then, it claimed the record for fastest acceleration, previously held by another SS Worldwide creation, Hypersonic XLC. Today, it is ranked as the fourth fastest roller coaster; however, over the past decade, it has proved unbeatable when it comes to acceleration. Steel fabrication was provided by Intermountain Lift, Inc. With all of its credentials, Dodonpa is frequently ranked in the top 10 best/most extreme/scariest roller coasters in the world by Time Magazine, Travel + Leisure, AYNILists, About.com, and Travel Around the World.

Fujiyama

Fujiyama is a steel roller coaster at Fuji-Q Highland, Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan. When Fujiyama opened in 1996 it was the worlds tallest roller coaster at 259 feet, and had the largest drop in the world at 230 feet . Fujiyama was also the worlds fastest roller coaster for a year of its operation, succeeded by Tower of Terror at Dreamworld theme park in Queensland, Australia in 1997. Despite being the worlds fastest roller coaster in operation for a year, Fujiyama set no world records for roller coaster speed. Steel Phantom at Kennywood set the world record for speed before engineers added additional brakes to slow the ride down because of safety and rider comfort concerns.

Takabisha

Takabisha is a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter steel roller coaster located at the Fuji-Q Highland theme park in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan. It is famous for having a drop angle of 121° – the steepest coaster in the world. The Japanese name Takabisha translates to "high-handed" or "domineering" in English. The name is a pun, in that the three kanji in the name literally mean "high fly car".

Nirasaki Central Park Stadium

Nirasaki Central Park Stadium is an athletic stadium in Nirasaki, Yamanashi, Japan. It was the home field of the Ventforet Kofu Association football club from Kōfu from 1999 to 2000, and has been used as a training ground by that team since. It is also the home ground of the Yamanashi Prefectural League team, Astros Nirasaki.

Kazunogawa Dam

The Kazunogawa Dam uses water from the Sagami River system to power a 1,200 MW pumped storage hydroelectric scheme. It is located 18 kilometres east of Kōshū in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. The station is designed to have an installed capacity of 1,600 megawatts and three of the four 400 megawatts generators are currently operational. Construction on the power station began in 1993 and the first generator was commissioned on 3 December 1999. The second was commissioned on 8 June 2000. The third on become operational on 9 June 2014, six year early due to post-power demand from the Great East Japan earthquake. The fourth and final generator is slate to be commissioned by 2024. It is owned by TEPCO and was constructed at a cost of $2.2 billion USD.

Fukashiro Dam

The Fukashiro Dam is a gravity dam in the Sagami River system, located 11 km north of Ōtsuki in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. The purpose of the dam is flood control and water supply. Plans for the dam were drawn up in 1978 and construction on the diversion tunnels began in 1996. The dam reached its height in 2001 and in 2003, the reservoir began to fill. By 2004, the entire dam was complete. It is 87 m tall and 164 m long at the crest. The dam's main spillway consists of five free overflow openings with a 790 m3/s discharge capacity. To handle additional discharges, there are two additional openings on the dam's orifice and two jet flow openings as part of the outlet works.
