Utsunomiya

Utsunomiya is the capital and most populous city of Tochigi Prefecture, in the northern Kantō region of Japan. As of May 2015, the city had an estimated population of 518,200 and a population density of 1240 persons per km². Its total area was 416.85 km². Utsunomiya is famous for its gyoza . There are more than two hundred gyoza restaurants in Utsunomiya. Greater Utsunomiya had a population of 888,005 in the 2000 Census. The nearby city of Oyama is included in Greater Tokyo, but Greater Utsunomiya is not, despite the two areas amalgamating somewhat. It is the 10th most populated city in the Kanto region.

Tobu World Square

Tobu World Square is a theme park in Kinugawa Onsen, Nikkō, Tochigi, Japan. The theme park contains over a hundred 1:25 scale models of famous buildings, including UNESCO-designated World Cultural and Heritage Sites, complete with 140,000 1:25 miniature people. On 24 April 2010, a 1:25 scale model of the Tokyo Skytree was unveiled at the park. This is 26 metres tall, taller than the 19.95 metre replica of the New York World Trade Center.

Futarasan Shrine

Futarasan jinja is a Shinto shrine in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It is also known as Nikkō Futarasan Shrine, to distinguish it from the shrine in nearby Utsunomiya. Futarasan enshrines three deities: Ōkuninushi, Tagorihime, and Ajisukitakahikone. It is located between Nikkō Tōshō-gū and the Taiyū-in Mausoleum. Many visitors go to all three, as well as to Rinnō-ji. Together with Nikkō Tōshō-gū and Rinnō-ji, it forms the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage Site. The shrine possesses two swords that are National treasures of Japan. Additionally, dozens of buildings and cultural artifacts are listed as Important Cultural Assets. The Sacred Bridge crossing the Daiya River belongs to the Futarasan Shrine. This beautiful vermilion lacquered structure is known as one of the three most beautiful bridges in Japan and is a perfect gateway for Nikko. The bridge was registered as a World Heritage in December 1999. Shinkyo measures 28 meters long, 7.4 meters wide, and stands 10.6 meters above the Daiya River. According to legend, a priest named Shōdō and his followers climbed Mt. Nantai in the year 766 to pray for national prosperity. However, they could not cross the fast flowing Daiya River. Shōdō prayed and a 10 foot tall god named Jinja-Daiou appeared with two snakes twisted around his right arm. Jinja-Daiou released the blue and red snakes and they transformed themselves into a rainbow-like bridge covered with sedge, which Shōdō and his followers could use to cross the river. That is why this bridge is sometimes called Yamasugeno-jabashi, which means the "Snake Bridge of Sedge". The Shinkyo has been rebuilt many times but has followed the same design pattern since 1636, when it could be used only by messengers of the Imperial court. It has been opened to the general public since 1973.

Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura

Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura is a Japanese cultural theme park located in the Kinugawa Onsen area of Nikkō, Tochigi. The park resurrects and showcases the life and culture of the Edo period. Edo Wonderland spans a total site area of 495,000m2 . The parks design is based on the Edo periods golden era known as Genroku. Edo Wonderland hosts a wide variety of Edo period architecture from rural lodgings to urban samurai residences and government buildings. Edo Wonderland is populated by staff in Edo period attire, reenacting the speech and behaviour of Edo era citizens from lower, middle and upper classes. Edo Wonderland has seven theatres featuring various traditionally themed shows including plays, Ninja action and Oiran shows combined with outdoor live shows, street performances, parades, seasonal festivals and special events. Edo Wonderland also has a range of visitor experiences for adults and children including Ninja workshops, Japanese traditional archery and shuriken throwing.

Kegon Falls

Kegon Falls is located at Lake Chūzenji in Nikkō National Park near the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The falls were formed when the Daiya River was rerouted by lava flows. About twelve smaller waterfalls are situated behind and to the sides of Kegon Falls, leaking through the many cracks between the mountain and the lava flows. At 97 m high, it is one of Japans three highest waterfalls. In the autumn, the traffic on the road from Nikko to Chūzenji can sometimes slow to a crawl as visitors come to see the fall colors. In 1927, the Kegon Falls was recognized as one of the "Eight Views" which best showed Japan and its culture in the Shōwa period. The Kegon Falls are infamous for suicides, especially among Japanese youth.

Cedar Avenue of Nikkō

The Cedar Avenue of Nikkō is a street in Japan lined with approximately 13,000 cryptomeria trees, known as Sugi, the national tree of Japan. Consisting of three parts converging on the city of Imaichi, the Cedar Avenue of Nikkō is 35.41 kilometers long and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest tree-lined avenue in the world. The Cedar Avenue of Nikkō is the only cultural property designated by the Japanese Government as both a Special Historic Site and a Special Natural Monument. The cedar trees were planted approximately 400 years ago by Matsudaira Masatsuna, a feudal lord serving Tokugawa Ieyasu, who donated them to the Nikkō Tōshō-gū. This monumental project was begun around 1625 and required about 20 years to be completed. It is estimated that some 200,000 cedars were planted at this time.

Rinnō-ji

Rinnō-ji is a complex of 15 Buddhist temple buildings in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The site was established in the year 766 by the Buddhist monk, Shōdō. Due to its geographic isolation, deep in the mountains of Japan, the site soon attracted other Buddhist monks in search of solitude. Among the most famous buildings is the Sanbutsudō or Three Buddha Hall. This building features gold-leafed statues of Amida, Kannon with a thousand arms and Kannon with a horses head . Next to the Sanbutsudō Hall there are Shōyō-en Garden and the Treasure House of Rinnō-ji. Another building, near the mausoleum, houses an unusual statue of Amida riding a large crane, which is an iconography rarely found in Japan. The temple also administers the Taiyū-in Reibyō, which is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Tokugawa shogun. Together with Nikkō Tōshō-gū and Futarasan Shrine, it forms the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lake Chūzenji

Lake Chūzenji is a scenic lake in Nikkō National Park in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It was created 20,000 years ago when Mount Nantai erupted and blocked the river. The lake has a surface area of 11.62 km² and a circumference of 25 km. Its elevation at the surface is 1,269 m, and the water reaches a depth of 163 m . The Yukawa is the principal source of water. It drains through the Kegon Falls. Chuzenji Lake was discovered in 782 by a priest named Shōdō when his group succeeded in climbing Mt. Nantai. Considered sacred, the mountain was closed to women, horses, and cows until 1872. In the middle of the Meiji period and early Showa period, many European embassies built vacation houses around the lake. The former Italian villa has been renewed and is now open to visitors. Other sites around the lake include Futara Shrine built in 790, Chuzenji Temple, and Kegon Falls. In spring, cherry blossoms are blooming. In summer, people can escape the heat and enjoy bird watching and hiking. In fall of course, there are the famous beautiful autumn leaves and in winter there is the Snow and Ice Festival, plus winter sports like skiing and skating. The lake was a favourite summer haunt of Sir Ernest Satow when he was Britains envoy in Japan, 1895-1900 as his diaries of that time attest. He constructed a house by the lake which is still owned and used to this day by the British Embassy.

Shrines and Temples of Nikkō

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Shrines and Temples of Nikkō encompasses 103 buildings or structures and the natural setting around them. It is located in Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The buildings belong to two Shinto shrines and one Buddhist temple . Nine of the structures are designated National Treasures of Japan while the remaining 94 are Important Cultural Properties. UNESCO listed the site as World Heritage in 1999.

Akechidaira Ropeway

The Akechidaira Ropeway is Japanese aerial lift line in Nikkō, Tochigi, operated by Nikkō-Kōtsū . The Tōbu Group company mainly operates bus lines in the city. The observatory has a view of Kegon Falls, Lake Chūzenji, and Mount Nantai. The line opened in 1933, and reopened in 1950.

Oze National Park

Oze National Park, is an area consisting of open Greenland in Fukushima, Tochigi, Gunma and Niigata Prefectures in Japan. The park is 372 km² in area and is the 29th national park in Japan. Opened on 30 August 2007, the parks area includes the marshes and the mountains in the Oze area, formerly part of the Nikkō National Park, and other nearby areas including the Aizu-Komagatake and Tashiroyama mountains. The park was the first new national park to open in 20 years, since the designation of Hokkaidōs Kushiro wetlands as a national park in 1987.

Bandai Museum

The Bandai Museum is a museum devoted to Bandai characters located in Mibu, Shimotsuga District, Tochigi, Japan. It opened on July 19, 2003 at Matsudo, Chiba, then closed on August 31, 2006, then moved on April 28, 2007 to Mibu, Tochigi where it features exhibits on Ultraman, Gundam, Godzilla, Super Sentai, and a Gundam-themed cafe along with various shops attached to the museum.

Nikkō Tōshō-gū

Nikkō Tōshō-gū is a Shinto shrine located in Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It is part of the "Shrines and Temples of Nikkō", a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ryūzu Falls

Ryūzu Falls is a waterfall located upstream from the Yugawa River which makes its way into Lake Yunoko and Lake Chuzenji. It is located near Nikkō in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Ryūzu can be translated as Dragons Head, and is so named because its twin falls are said to resemble a dragons head.

Shōyō-en Garden

Shōyō-en Garden is a Japanese garden located next to the Sanbutsudō Hall of Rinnō-ji Temple in Nikkō. It was constructed in early Edo period, but reformed in the beginning of 19th century. The garden was given its name by a Confucian scholar Issai Sato. There is a pond containing carp in the middle; stone lanterns, bridges, bamboo fences, a pagoda, and a small tea house adorn the garden. Shōyō-en Garden was designed to look like Lake Biwa and the surrounding scenery in Shiga Prefecture known as the "Eight Views of Omi".

Saimyō-ji

Saimyō-ji is a Shingi Shingon Buddhist temple of the Buzan-ha located halfway up a mountainside in the town of Mashiko, Tochigi, Japan. Built in 737 and rebuilt in 1492, it is one of the four oldest temples in eastern Japan. It is the only temple where one can see a statue of a laughing Enma, the Judge of Hell. The temple also has a stand of shikeidake, a decorative bamboo originally from China with four-sided, rather than round, stalks that grow to 30 feet in height. Saimyō-ji has been designated an Important Cultural Property by the Government of Japan.

Senju-ji

Senju-ji, also known as Takadayama, is the chief Buddhist temple of the Takada branch of Jōdo Shinshū, a Japanese sect of Buddhism. Founded by Shinran in 1226, it was later named an imperial temple . Though the temples central sacred mountain is located in Tsu city, Mie prefecture, where Senju-ji was originally founded, today the head temple is in Takata, Ninomiya town, in Tochigi prefecture. The temple is named after the prayer chant senju-nenbutsu, and as a result of the fact that another branch built a temple called Senjō-ji; thus, a similar but different name was chosen. Named an imperial temple in 1477, Senju-ji was later elevated further, to the classification of Monzeki-dera in 1574. Today, the Takada branch has roughly 300,000 followers.

Mount Nantai

Mount Nantai literally "mans body mountain", also called Futara-san is a stratovolcano in the Nikkō National Park in central Honshū, the main island of Japan. It stands at 2,486 m high. A prominent landmark, it can be seen on clear days from as far as the Pacific coast, 100 km away.

Utsunomiya Velodrome

Utsunomiya Velodrome is a velodrome located in Utsunomiya, Tochigi that conducts pari-mutuel Keirin racing one of Japans four authorized "Public Sports" where gambling is permitted. Nicknamed "Kaze no Wonderland", its Keirin identification number for betting purposes is 24# . Utsunomiyas oval is 500 meters in circumference. A typical keirin race of 2,025 meters consists of four laps around the course. Utsunomiya Velodrome is the home track of Yūichirō Kamiyama, a 21-year Keirin veteran and one of the sports best competitors with 16 GI victories in his career.

Nikkō Kirifuri Ice Arena

The Nikkō Kirifuri Ice Arena is an indoor sporting arena in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi, Japan. It is primarily used for ice hockey, and is the home arena of Nikkō Ice Bucks of the Asia League Ice Hockey. It was opened in 1992 and holds 2,000 seats (1,608 seated and 392 standing only).

Ōya-ji

Ōya-ji is a Buddhist temple of the Tendai sect in the city of Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. According to legend, the temple was established by Kūkai, the founder of the Shingon sect, in the year 810, but this has not been firmly established. The temple was rebuilt during the years 1615 to 1624. The temple is built into the surrounding tuff rock and features a carved figure of the Bodhisattva Kannon with a thousand arms with a surrounding altar. Adjacent to the altar is another cave wall with a carving of the Buddhist trinity of Amida Buddha, Kannon and Seishi Bodhisattvas. The temple complex also features a small museum of artifacts recovered from nearby settlements dating back to the Jōmon period in Japan. Across from the temple is a quarry that has been converted into a park. The park features a massive statue of Kannon Bodhisattva, called the "Kannon of Peace" carved after World War II.

Tochigi Prefectural Museum is a prefectural museum in the city of Utsunomiya, Japan. The collection relates to the history and natural history of Tochigi Prefecture. The museum opened in 1982.

Utsunomiya Bunka Kaikan

Utsunomiya Bunka Kaikan is a concert hall located in Utsunomiya, Tochigi, Japan. It features a 2,000-seat great hall and a 500-seat small hall. It opened in 1979. Whitesnake performed at Utsunomiya Bunka Kaikan as part of their 1983 Japanese tour.

Nasu Imperial Villa

Nasu Imperial Villa, located in the town of Nasu, Nasu District in Tochigi Prefecture, is a retreat used by the Japanese Imperial Family. The structure dates to 1926, a further addition came in 1935. The Imperial Family normally uses the villa during the months of August and September. On May 22, 2011 approximately half of the grounds of the villa were opened to the public as the Nasu Heisei no Mori Park.

Kayabukiya Tavern

The Kayabukiya Tavern is a traditional-style Japanese "sake-house" restaurant located in the city of Utsunomiya, north of Tokyo, Japan. The location attracted international attention in 2008 when the Western media reported the tavern and its news movies were uploaded to YouTube. The tavern's owner, Kaoru Otsuka, owns two pet macaque monkeys who are currently employed to work at the location. The first monkey, twelve-year-old "Yat-chan", is dressed in a shirt and shorts while he takes customers' drink orders and delivers them to the diners' tables. The restaurant's owner, Otsuka, reported that he never initially taught the monkeys; Yat-chan first learned from watching him work. Otsuka said, "It all started one day when I gave him a hot towel out of curiosity and he brought the towel to the customer." The younger macaque, named Fuku-chan, is currently four years old and has the main duty of bringing the attendees hot towels to clean their hands before ordering drinks. Fuku-chan has only two years of experience, while Yat-chan has been reportedly performing the job for a longer time. Both monkeys receive boiled soya beans from customers as tips for their service. The monkeys' environment has been inspected to ensure proper treatment of the animals; due to Japanese animal rights regulations, they are each only allowed to work for two hours a day. The owner says that he will be introducing more simians to work as waiters at Kayabukiya, and as of October 2008 is currently training three young monkeys to take on the job. The restaurant was also featured as a reward for the winning team in the third episode of Season Two of I Survived a Japanese Game Show. The tavern was abandoned after the 3/11 earthquake and tsunami. The monkeys still belong to the owner. The current state of the tavern and the monkeys was documented in a 2014 movie by artist Pierre Huyghe.

Kinugawa Onsen

Kinugawa Onsen is a hot spring resort in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi, Japan. The place is named after the Kinugawa River (literally "angry demon river"), which flows through it. Located two hours by train from Tokyo, hot springs were first found in the area in the early Meiji period. The area was extensively developed for tourism in the 1970s, but has since experienced severe economic difficulties after a downturn caused by the 1990s recession, exacerbated by troubles at the insolvent Ashikaga Bank (a major local lender). However, in 2008 the city's tourism industry received a boost as high car and airplane fuel costs have caused travelers to seek tourist destinations more easily reachable by train, such as the Kinugawa onsen. Located close by is Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura, a traditionally themed culture and amusement park containing theatres, workshops, games, ninja and oiran shows and is populated with samurai, ninja, geisha and common folk. Also within 8-minute walking distance from Kinugawa is the Tobu World Square which boasts 102 exquisitely crafted 1:25 scale models of the most famous, UNESCO-designated World Cultural and Heritage Sites, complete with 140,000 1:25 miniature people.

Tochigi Green Stadium

Tochigi Green Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Utsunomiya, Tochigi, Japan, home of Tochigi S.C.. Originally it was a stadium with a single concrete stand and grass terraces on the other sides. A new concrete stand was built opposite the main stand and opened for the 2011 season. The stadium's capacity is 18,025 people. It is also used sometimes for Top League rugby games.

Imaichi Dam

The Imaichi Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the Togawa River located 4 kilometres west of Nikkō in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The dam serves as the lower reservoir for the 1,050 megawatts Imaichi Pumped Storage Power Station, while the Kuriyama Dam forms the upper. It is owned by TEPCO and was constructed between 1979 and 1986, with the first generator commissioned in 1988. Its reservoir can store 9,100,000 cubic metres of water. Of that storage volume, 6,200,000 cubic metres can be used for power generation.

Kuriyama Dam

The Kuriyama Dam is a rock-fill embankment dam on a tributary of the Togawa River located 6.4 km northwest of Nikkō in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It was constructed between 1981 and 1985. Its reservoir serves as the upper reservoir for the 1,050 MW Imaichi Pumped Storage Power Station, while the Imaichi Dam forms the lower. The dam is 97.5 m tall and withholds a reservoir with a storage capacity of 6,890,000 m3 . Of that capacity, 6,200,000 m3 is used to produce electricity at the power plant. It is owned and operated by TEPCO.
