Shillong

Shillong is the capital and hill station of Meghalaya, also known as "The Abode of Clouds", one of the smallest states in India. It is the headquarters of the East Khasi Hills district and is situated at an average altitude of 4,908 feet above sea level, with the highest point being Shillong Peak at 6,449 feet . Shillong is the 330th most populous city in India with population of 143,007 according to the 2011 census. It is said that the rolling hills around the town reminded the European settlers of Scotland. Hence, they would also refer to it as the "Scotland of the East". The population density of the state of Meghalaya in the 2000s was 342 people per sq mile. Shillong has steadily grown in size since it was made the civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills in 1864 by the British. In 1874, on the formation of Assam as the Chief Commissioner's Province, it was chosen as the headquarters of the new administration because of its convenient location between the Brahmaputra and Surma valleys and more so because the climate of Shillong was much cooler than tropical India. Shillong remained the capital of undivided Assam until the creation of the new state of Meghalaya on 21 January 1972, when Shillong became the capital of Meghalaya, and Assam moved its capital to Dispur in Guwahati.

Nohkalikai Falls

Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Its height is 1115 feet . The waterfall is located near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. Nohkalikai Falls are fed by the rainwater collected on the summit of comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season in December February. Below the falls there has formed a plunge pool with unusual green colored water. The name of the falls in Khasi language meaning "Jump of Ka Likai" is linked to a legend about local women Likai who jumped off the cliff next to the falls; According to legends, in a village called Rangjyrteh, upstream from Nohkalikai Falls, a woman named Likai resided but had to remarry after her husband died. Ka Likai was left with her infant girl with no means of income. So she had to become a porter herself. Her work required her to leave her daughter unattended for long intervals but when she would be at home she would spend most of her time taking care of her infant. Ka Likai, who married a second time, couldn’t pay attention to her second husband. The jealous husband killed the infant and cooked her meat after throwing away her head and bones. When Ka Likai returned home, she saw nobody in the house but except for a meal that had been prepared. She wanted to go look for her daughter but she ate the meat as she was tired from work. Ka Likai usually had a betel leaf after her meals but she found a severed finger near the place where she usually cut betel nuts and betel leaves. Ka Likai realized what had happened in her absence and went mad with anger and grief and started running as she swung a hatchet in her hand. She ran off the edge of the plateau and the waterfall where she jumped from was named Nohkalikai Falls after her.

Dhamrai Rathayatra

Dhamrai Jagannath Roth is a chariot temple, a Roth, dedicated to the Hindu God Jagannath located in Dhamrai, Bangladesh. The annual Jagannath Roth Jatra is a famous Hindu festival attracting thousands of people. The Roth Jatra in Dhamrai is one of the most important events for the Hindu community of Bangladesh. Sri Jagannath is believed by the Hindus to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, one among the Holy Hindu Trinity of Gods . Lord Jagannath is also believed to be a deity form of Lord Krishna. For the thousands of Hindu devotees, it is considered a pious deed and the huge processions accompanying the chariots play devotional songs with drums, tambourines, trumpets etc. A glimpse of Lord Jagannath on the chariot is considered to be very auspicious and saints, poets and scriptures have repeatedly glorified the sanctity of this special festival. The sanctity of the festival is such that even a touch of the chariot or even the ropes with which these are pulled is considered enough to confer the results of several pious deeds or penance for ages.

Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians

The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians is a Cathedral in Shillong, Meghalaya. It is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong which covers the Khasi and Jaintia hills of Meghalaya. The Cathedral is the principal place of worship of the over 300,000 strong Catholics of the Shillong Archdiocese which covers the Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills of Meghalaya. An Archdiocese is a “diocese" or area under the jurisdiction of an Archbishop. In all there are 33 church districts or “Parishes” in the Shillong Archdiocese. The Cathedral Church was built over 50 years ago. Since it also has the “cathedra” – the seat or throne of the Bishop – it is known as a Cathedral Church. This place of worship stands on the very site of the first Church built by the German fathers. The earlier 1913 building – the Church of the Divine Saviour – was a wooden structure. It was destroyed by the Good Friday fire of April 10, 1936. Built by the first Catholic missionaries to these hills, the Salvatorian Fathers from Germany, it was the first Catholic Cathedral Church in what was then the Mission of Assam.

Langshiang Falls

The Langshiang Falls is located near the village of Sangriang, 24 kilometres from Nongstoin, in West Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. It can also be seen from Mawpon village. The total height of the falls is generally quoted at around 337 metres . However, that needs to be confirmed. Considering the height to be correct, it is the 3rd highest waterfalls in India. Langshiang, about 24-25 km from Nongstoin, is about 30 minutes walk from Sangriang village. The Mighty Kynshi River after splitting and forms the 2nd largest River Island in Asia meets somewhere on the upstream side of Langchong area. The river passes through a valley and forms a pool called ‘Wei Spi’ and is surrounded by breathtaking giant cliff. The river then divert it downstream to a deep gorge forming one of the highest and biggest waterfall in the state popularly known as the ‘Langshiang Falls’ or ‘kshaid Ur-Nar’. It offers one of the best panoramic views of the green lawn hills nearby and surrounding by hamlets including the village of Mawpon. Langchong consist of some falls, closer to wei spi there are two waterfalls called the ‘kshaid chong’ falls and ‘wei spi’ falls. As the river flows downstream, it goes through deep gorge and there is an upcoming project known as the Kynshi HEP. The project will significantly enhance development and secondary benefits like boost to tourism.

Nokrek National Park

Nokrek National Park, or Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, is a national park located Approximately 2 km from Tura Peak in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, India. UNESCO added this National park to its list of Biosphere Reserves in May 2009. Along with Balphakram national park, Nokrek is a hotspot of biodiversity in Meghalaya. Nokrek has a remnant population of the Red panda that has generated curiosity across the world. One was accidentally shot by Dr J. Lao in 1960s. Nokrek is also an important habitat of the Asian elephants. The park had eight species of cats, ranging from Tiger to Marbled cat but the current status of the former is uncertain. There are seven species of primates in Nokrek. The rare Stump-tailed macaque is frequently seen near the main trek to the peak. The Pig-tailed macaque also occurs. Hoolocks are common and their calls could be heard all over Nokrek. Nokrek is also an Important Bird Area. There is a vast range of plants found in the park. A virgin canopy of thick, tall and lush green forests cover Nokrek and its environs. The mother germoplasm of Citrus indica have been discovered by science researchers within Nokrek Range. This discovery led to the establishment of the National Citrus Gene Sanctuary-cum-Biosphere Reserve covering an area of forty-seven square kilometres.The area is noted for its wild varieties of citrus fruits that provide a gene-pool for commercially produced citrus. The entire Biosphere Reserve is hilly. The rock is mainly gneisses, granulites, migmatites, amphibolites and banded iron formation, intruded by basis and ultra-basic bodies. In most of the Biosphere Reserve area the soil is red loam. But sometimes it varies from clayey to sandy loam. The soils in the Biosphere Reserve are rich in organic matter and nitrogen but deficient in phosphate and potash. The area consists of patchy sedimentary rock composed of pebble bed, sand stone, and carbonaceous shales. All important rivers and streams of the Garo Hills region rise from the Nokrek Range, of which the river Simsang, known as Someshwari when it emerges into Bangladesh at Baghmara, is the most prominent. Famous sites in the park include the famous Nokrek Peak, Rongbang Dare Water Fall. Balpakram National Park and the famous Siju Cave is located very close to the Napak Lake near the Simsang River game reserve which is south east to Nokrek National Park. The Cave is filled with water and is miles long.

Balphakram National Park

Balphakram National Park is a national park located about 3,000 metres above sea level, near the Garo Hills in Meghalaya, India. It is often referred to as the "abode of perpetual winds" as well as the "land of spirits." It is also the home of the barking deer and the golden cat. Commonly seen animals include Wild water buffalo, Red panda, Elephant and eight species of cats including Tiger and Marbled cat. Balpakram, land of the eternal death, according to Garo myth, has a very beautiful landscape and one of the best Canyon around the region. It is famous for unique land formations with surround the mythological stories of the Garos.It is also very famous for pitcher plant and many medicinal plants called Dik.ke. Declared National Park by the Government of India, it is now a protected place and permission has to be sought from the wildlife authorities before entering. It has some unique plants species including the ones mentioned and the corridor for the Indian elephant.

Laitumkhrah

Laitumkhrah is a census town in Shillong, Meghalaya, India. The name of the place basically means a place where the river "Umkhrah" originates from making its name aptly suited. From Laitumkhrah there runs three roads connecting Happy Valley, Umpling & New Colony. Accommodation is bit costly but staying here itself is an experience. Almost all the old architectural buildings here has given birth to new houses with all the luxuries embedded. This place is relatively cold compared to other places of Shillong. Laitumkhrah has a number of churches, schools and colleges. It is situated in the heart of Shillong. It has a market providing fresh vegetables, pork, beef, chicken and other stuffs. Nazerth Hospital, which is one of the oldest hospitals in Shillong, is located here, providing affordable and quality treatment. There is a cemetery called "Holy Ground" that can deliver peace to your mind if you visit it. Laitumkhrah also houses the famous Ramakrishna Mission Shillong. The age old sweet shop "Kalpatru", which is located near to Police Point, offers a wide variety of sweets and is running from the last third generation. It is also a center of education with numerous well known educational institutions like Loreto Convent, St. Edmund's College, St. Anthony's College, St. Mary's College, Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong and the National Institute of Technology Meghalaya that offers courses like electricals, carpentry and printing and others, located within the boundary of Laitumkhrah. The North East India's Archdiocese of the Catholic Church is also located in Laitumkhrah. Its one of the cleanest place in Shillong.

Baljek Airport

Baljek Airport (ICAO: VETU) (also known as Tura Airport) is a public airport located at Baljek, 33 km (21 mi) North-east of Tura in Meghalaya, India. The proposal for the airport was sent to the Central Government in 1983 and the project was sanctioned in 1995. The airport was inaugurated in October 2008. It was built at a cost of Rs 12.52 crore and was initially designed to handle 20 seater aircraft like the Dornier Do 228. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is developing the airport for operation of ATR 42/ATR 72 type of aircraft. The 3,300 foot runway will be extended by another 1,200 feet. A total of 58 acres of additional land was acquired at a cost of Rs 2.58 crore to aid the expansion of the airport. No scheduled commercial air service at this Airport at this time. The nearest airport is Shillong Airport which is operating scheduled flights from Shillong to Kolkata.

Shillong Airport

Shillong Airport, (IATA: SHL, ICAO: VEBI) also known as Umroi Airport, is a civilian airport located at Umroi, 30 km (19 mi) from Shillong, Meghalaya, India. The airport was constructed in the mid-1960s and became operational in the mid-1970s. Land measuring 224.16 acres was acquired for expansion of the airport in 2009. The work commenced in June 2009 and was completed in May 2010. The new terminal building, built at a cost of Rs. 300 million, was inaugurated in June 2011. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been allotted land for the further expansion of the airport. The present 6,000 ft runway that can support an ATR-42 aircraft will be extended to about 8,000 feet to facilitate operation of narrow body jet aircraft like Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. The apron for parking of two such jet aircraft and a refuelling station will also be built.
