Top Attractions in Gabon

Kongou Falls

Kongou Falls is a massive cataract about 3.2 kilometres wide and up to 56 m tall, located in Ivindo National Park in eastern Gabon. It is located on the Ivindo river and is one of the strongest-flowing waterfalls in the world with an average flow of 900 cubic metres per second. It is reputed to be the most beautiful waterfall in Central Africa. This part of the Ivindo River is a major centre of fish biodiversity. The falls are within Ivindo National Park, created in 2002 to protect among other things this beautiful and biologically diverse stretch of river. On 14 September 2007 President Omar Bongo Ondimba of Gabon confirmed that a dam would be built at the falls to provide electricity to a large iron mining project in Belinga further north. The iron mine is essentially for Gabons economic development, but the dam will inundate a large part of the National Park, and have a serious impact on local livelihoods. Old studies indicate that there are other sites on the river where a dam would be easier to build and the environmental and social impacts would be much less than at Kongou, but no Environmental impact assessment was done before the decision was made. The decision put into question the Presidents strategy of developing ecotourism in Gabon and may well deter investors and tourists alike. It is claimed that the construction of the dam with no prior environmental impact study or proper consultation was a sign of the growing power of the Minister of Mines and Petrol at a time when President Bongos power was declining. Due to opposition from the Gabonese people this project has been stopped.

Ivindo National Park

Ivindo National Park is a national park in east-central Gabon in Central Africa, straddling the border of the Ogooué-Ivindo and Ogooué-Lolo provences. Its creation was announced in August 2002 by then-President Omar Bongo at the Earth Summit in Johannesburg, along with Gabon’s 12 other terrestrial national parks. Most famous for the spectacular Kongou and Mingouli waterfalls of the Ivindo River, known as the “wonders of Ivindo”, the park also includes the Ipassa Makokou Biosphere Reserve and Langoué Baï, one of the 5 most important forest clearings in Central Africa. The Institut de Recherche en Écologie Tropicale, a tropical research institute under the authority of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique et technologique, is found in the in the north of the park, 12 km from the closest city, Makokou, while Langoué Research Station, run by the Wildlife Conservation Society is found in the south a few kilometers from Langoué Baï. Physical features of the park include the Ivindo River, the park is the main tributary to the Ogooué, and Mount Kingué and Mount Ngouadi . Average rainfall is 1672 mm, with peaks in rainfall between September and December, and February and May. Violent thunderstorms occur seasonally, and can sometimes generate localised tornadoes, especially on the Ipassa Plateau; the disturbances caused by this effect may be responsible for the fact that this forest superficially resembles secondary forest. Average temperature is 23.9 °C, with seasonal variation of around 3.3 °C. The park covers 300,000 ha, almost all of which is forested with a mixture of Atlantic coastal forest of Lower Guinea, and semi-deciduous forest typical of central Congo Basin. Wildlife includes western lowland gorilla, common chimpanzee, African forest buffalo, red river hog, sitatunga, as well as one of the last relativity intact populations of forest elephants. Notable bird species include grey-necked rockfowl, while more than 430 bird species have been recorded within the park. Since 2001, before the parks creation, the WCS has studied and protected the southern region of the park, concentrated at Langoué Bai, with the support of what is now the Gabonese National Parks Agency . In 2004 WCS constructed a purpose-built camp 3 km from Langoué Bai, with accommodation and offices for researchers, providing important insights into bai ecology and a protective presence against poachers.

Lopé National Park

Lopé National Park is a national park in central Gabon. Although the terrain is mostly rain forest, in the north the park contains the last remnants of grass savannas created in Central Africa during the last Ice Age, 15,000 years ago. It was the first protected area in Gabon when the Lopé-Okanda Wildlife Reserve was created in 1946. In 2007, the Lopé-Okanda landscape was added to the World Heritage List by UNESCO. The park contains a small research station, named as Mikongo and run by the Zoological Society London, based in the village known as Mikongo, from which it gets its name. There exists infrastructure to cater for tourists at the base, including several chalets and a large open air dining room, from which the rainforest is a mere five meters away. The park also hosts CEDAMM Training Centre, a Wildlife Conservation Society-run international conservation education center.

Loango National Park

Loango National Park is a national park in western Gabon. It protects diverse coastal habitat, including part of the 220 km² Iguéla Lagoon, the only significant example of a typical western African lagoon system that is protected within a national park. Situated between the Nkomi and Ndogo Lagoons, Loango National Park is the true jewel of Africas western coast. The naturalist Mike Fay called Loango Africas Last Eden and this is where Michael "Nick" Nichols from National Geographic took his well-known pictures of surfing hippos. Both men call Loango the Land of surfing hippos. The park’s 1,550 km² of savanna, pristine beach, forest and mangroves are a must-see in Gabon. Loango National Park offers breathtaking panoramas and the unique opportunity to observe elephants, buffalos, hippos, gorillas and leopards venturing onto the white sand beaches. After South Africa, the world’s largest concentration and variety of whales and dolphins can be found right off the Loango coast. The area has over 100 kilometres of uninhabited coastline and humpback and killer whales are easy to observe here. This is arguably the most beautiful spot on Africas western coast – the place where forests, savannas, wetlands, lagoons and ocean all come together. Loango is renowned worldwide as a site for tarpon of record size, as well as many other large saltwater fish. The World Conservation Union or International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, an international organization dedicated to natural resource conservation, classed Loango National Park as a faunal reserve and protected area for conservation.

Ipassa Makokou Biosphere Reserve

The Ipassa Makokou Biosphere reserve is situated in Gabon and covers 150.00 km². Situated along the banks of the Ivindo River, Ipassa-Makokou Biosphere Reserve represents an example of the dense tropical rainforest of the Congo-Guinean phytogeographic region. The biosphere reserve is Gabon’s only area where no forest exploitation takes place thus the core area is in a relatively pristine state. Within the 15,000 hectares of the biosphere reserve, more than 2,000 plant species and 600 species of mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians and birds have been recorded. Among the most threatened plant species are Ardisia belingensis and Rhaptopetalum belingensis. No people are living within the biosphere reserve. However, many villages are located along the southern bank of the Ivindo River. The main human activities include traditional agriculture, stock raising and the use of forest resources. The core area is exceptionally well studied since long-term monitoring plots have been set up in 1963. There is a functioning research station in the area. Studies have also been carried out on agroforestry. In 1985, most research activity ceased, and an increase in poaching and human encroachment took place. Numerous proposals for rehabilitating the research center have been put forward, but the site remains comparatively underused

Mont-Bouët

The marché Mont-Bouët, in Libreville is Gabons largest market, with hundreds of stalls selling fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fabric, clothing, jewelry, household goods, traditional medicine and a variety of other goods. It is easy to get lost in the narrow passageways of the market and there are pickpockets, so visitors should keep track of their money and valuables at all times. On the outskirts of the market is a large shopping district. Many of the shops carry a wide variety of the popular print fabrics used to make clothing. Above many of the shops, local women run restaurants out of their apartments. Good Middle Eastern and north African food may be had at reasonable prices. Children wander the market, selling plastic bags for holding goods, bags of drinking water, bean sandwiches and other items for shoppers. Next to the market is the old location of the gare routier, or major bush taxi stop. Due to a high incidence of violence and robbery, the main gare is now closed. Bush taxis must now be obtained on the outskirts of Libreville along the main highways, particularly at PK8 along the N1 road. Across from the market is a prison. It is a wide, open area surrounded by a high concrete wall.

Stade d'Angondjé

The Stade d'Angondjé is a stadium in Angondjé, a suburb of Libreville in Gabon. It is referred to as Stade de l'Amitié. The stadium build was expected to take 20 months and was funded by the Gabonese and Chinese governments. It was one of four stadiums to be used for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and hosted the competition final. The inaugural football match played here was Gabon facing off against Brazil. Brazil won that match 2-0. The symbolic laying of the foundation stone was made by the Gabonese Sports Minister Rene Ndemezo’Obiang and the Chinese Vice Minister Fu Ziying in April 2010. This stadium was constructed by China, and built on a 30-hectare area by the Chinese company Shanghai Construction Group. The work was entirely funded by China while Gabon developed the site, including bringing water and electricity, and building access roads.

Libreville Hospital

Libreville Hospital (French: Centre Hospitalier de Libreville, CHL) is the largest and most important hospital in Gabon. Located in the nation's capital of Libreville, the hospital has an accident and emergency department which serves much of the country. The hospital treated soldiers during the 2009 Gabonese helicopter crash. The first Department of Neurology in Gabon was opened in Libreville Hospital on 15 September 1980. The hospital also has a Department of Visceral Surgery. Libreville Hospital has 650 beds and a workforce of agents estimated at 1,500 agents across all categories. The hospital possesses sufficient technology to deal with various diseases. However, due to factors such as heavy patient burden and, consequently, fluidly defined staff roles, the hospital most often provides primary and secondary care rather than the specialised (tertiary) care that is in principle given to it. Additionally, because health facilities in Gabon generally do not support childbirths as of yet, except in the Okala district of Libreville, Libreville Hospital handles almost all deliveries in the city.
