Ñuñoa

Ñuñoa (Spanish pronunciation: [ɲuˈɲoa])(from Mapudungun Ñuñohue, "place of yellow flowers") is a commune of Chile located in the Santiago province and city of Santiago. The oldest municipality in the traditional east end of Santiago, Ñuñoa has most city amenities while still maintaining its character as a quiet, residential area. Recently, Ñuñoa's many charms and convenient location have led to an increased desire by young urban professionals to live there. In response, developers have bought out older homes and erected multi-dwelling units, a practice that has triggered much criticism from long-time residents. In 2007, Ñuñoa was cited for the third consecutive year as the district with the highest quality of life in Santiago. Ñuñoa boasts bustling public services and private businesses and a public transportation system serving all parts of the municipality. Most business activity takes place along Irarrázaval Ave., a 6-km thoroughfare crossing the entire municipality east-west. Along Irarrázaval Ave., charming Plaza Ñuñoa is ground zero for lovers of the arts and fine dining. Ñuñoa is also home to Santiago’s only mosque and to the National Stadium, Chile’s largest sports complex. During the military dictatorship headed by Augusto Pinochet, the National Stadium, which stands in the heart of Ñuñoa, was turned into a notorious torture and death camp where tens of thousands were held. Every September 11, on the anniversary of the coup d'etat that brought Pinochet to power, a candlelight vigil is held in remembrance of the scores of Chileans and people of many nationalities who were imprisoned, tortured and killed in the Stadium at the hands of their military captors.

Fantasilandia

Fantasilandia is a Chilean amusement park. The park opened in 1978 and is located in a corner of the OHiggins Park in Santiago, Chile, Not to be confused with the theme park Phantasialand in Brühl, North Western Germany. On January 28, 1978 the park opened for first time with only 8 attractions, including the "Galaxy" coaster, "Mansion Siniestra", "Ford T" and "Century 2000", among others. Over the years the park has replaced many of its classic rides with modern rides like "Top Spin", "Xtreme Fall", and "Boomerang". In late 2007 Fantasilandia opened a new ride to replace the old ride "Splash". Called "Tsunami" it was built in Chile under licence of Intamin A.G of Switzerland. With this milestone the park celebrated its 30 year anniversary. The ride "Villa Magica" also opened in the Kids Zone, located next to "Cine Magic 3D" and fast food locations. In 2008 Fantasilandia opened the second Vekoma SLC in Southamerica. It is called "Raptor" and cost around US$10,000,000. In 2009 three new rides opened in the Kids Zone area. These were "Rockin Tug", "Toing Boing" and "Buggy Jump", all of them made in Italy by Zamperla. In late 2010 the Wave Swinger made by Zierer was opened and is called "Volare" A German built Condor ride was introduced in late 2011. It is called Ikarus. In December, 2012, Fantasilandia added an Air Race ride, built by Zamperla Rides, celebrating 35 years of the opening of the park A year later, the S.D.C Galaxy rollercoaster was closed due to an accident and the "Fun Karting" ride was removed. Also a restaurant with kiddie theme was added in front of the Air Race, and the construction for the new Mack Rides Twist n Splash ride begun On December 2014, Fantasilandia started opening the "Moby Dick" ride, manufactured by Wisdom Rides, which opened officially to public on January 2015

Vitacura

Vitacura is a commune of Chile located in Santiago Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. It is one of the most expensive and fashionable areas of Santiago. Inhabitants are primarily high income families. There is an abundance of elite private schools in Vitacura and Las Condes, including Saint George's College, Colegio Santa Úrsula, Alliance Francaise, Colegio La Maisonette, Colegio Tabancura, Colegio Los Andes, Colegio Sagrados Corazones de Manquehue and Colegio San Benito. The Costanera Norte toll-way connects Vitacura with the international airport and subway stations are located in the neighbor municipality of Las Condes. Vitacura is see of ECLAC headquarters, home to the European Southern Observatory headquarters in Chile, and home to Santiago's most exclusive shopping street, Avenida Alonso de Córdova.

National Museum of Fine Arts

The Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts , located in Santiago, Chile, is one of the major centers for Chilean art and for broader South American art. Established in 1880 (making it the oldest in South America), the organization is managed by the "Artistic Union" (Unión Artística). The current building, the "Palace of the Fine Arts" (el Palacio de Bellas Artes), dates to 1910 and commemorates the first centennial of the Independence of Chile. It was designed by the French-Chilean architect Emile Jecquier in a full-blown Beaux-arts style and is situated in the Parque Forestal of Santiago. Behind it is located the Museum of Contemporary Art (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo) of the University of Chile, in which is also located the old School of Fine Arts (Escuela de Bellas Artes).

Cementerio General de Santiago

The Cementerio General de Santiago, Chile is one of the largest cemeteries in Latin America with an estimated 2 million burials. The cemetery was established in 1821 after Chiles independence when Bernardo OHiggins inaugurated the Alameda de las Delicias along the old course of the Mapocho River. OHiggins set aside more than 85 hectares of land for the foundation of what became a magnificent grounds filled with ornate mausoleums surrounded by palm and leaf trees set amidst lush gardens and numerous sculptures, which have been estimated be 237. The cemetery, which is located northwest of Cerro Blanco, serves as a true urban park for Santiago. This cemetery is the final resting place for at least 172 of the most influential people in Chile, including all but two of the deceased Presidents of Chile, the exceptions being Gabriel González Videla and Augusto Pinochet. One of the most visited memorials is that of former President Salvador Allende who had been buried in the Santa Ines cemetery at Viña del Mar following his suicide in the 1973 coup détat. With the democratic changes that began in the 1990s, Allende was exhumed and his remains were transported in a solemn procession through the streets of Santiago to a place of honor in the Cementerio General de Santiago. The cemetery also has a memorial to the people that were disappeared during the regime of Augusto Pinochet that ousted President Allende. The gatehouse that serves as the main entrance to the cemetery is crowned by a dome, which acts as a terminating vista for La Paz Avenue. This entrance is preceded by the Plaza La Paz, a semicircular plaza whose curved portion is framed by two exposed brick arcades. At the center of the square stands a monument dedicated to the people who died in the Church of the Company Fire. The cemetery can be accessed via Cementerios metro station. The historical portion of the cemetery was designated as a national monument in 2010, reaching the same status as Patio 29.

Plaza Camilo Mori

Plaza Camilo Mori is located in the commune of Providencia, in Santiago, Chile, between the streets of Constitución and Antonia López de Bello, in the heart of Barrio Bellavista. One block away is Pio Nono street, which leads to the Chilean National Zoo and San Cristóbal Hill. Plaza Camilo Mori is also an important meeting place for bohemian culture in Santiago, where important places such as the house-museum of Pablo Neruda, the Centro Mori, pubs and restaurants spreading from the plaza south along Constitución street and above all, a great number of workshops, theatres and cultural centers can be found. Nemesio Antúnez, Pablo Neruda, Mario Baeza and Camilo Mori are examples of how artists have given their names to this part of Barrio Bellavista. Access to the square is via station Baquedano of the Santiago Metro.
