Canadian Museum of History

The Canadian Museum of History is Canadas national museum of human history. It is located in the Hull area of Gatineau, Quebec, directly across the Ottawa River from Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario. The museums primary purpose is to collect, study, preserve, and present material objects that illuminate the human history of Canada and the cultural diversity of its people. In October 2012, it was announced that the museum would be renamed from the Canadian Museum of Civilization to the Canadian Museum of History, with an increased focus on Canadian history and people. The name change became official when the Canadian Museum of History Act received Royal Assent on December 12, 2013, with changes to the museums visual identity implemented gradually over the course of the following months. The Museum of Historys permanent galleries explore Canadas 20,000 years of human history and a program of special exhibitions expands on Canadian themes and explore other cultures and civilizations, past and present. The museum is also a major research institution. Its staff includes leading experts in Canadian history, archaeology, ethnology, folk culture, and more. With roots stretching back to 1856, the Museum is one of North Americas oldest cultural institutions. It is also home to the Canadian Childrens Museum, and an IMAX Theatre with 3D capacity. It was previously also home to the Canadian Postal Museum. The Museum of History is managed by the Canadian Museum of History Corporation, a federal Crown Corporation that is also responsible for the Canadian War Museum, the Childrens Museum and the Virtual Museum of New France. The Museum is a member of the Canadian Museums Association. The museum was designed by Douglas Cardinal, a famous Aboriginal architect educated at the University of British Columbia, and the University of Texas at Austin.

Gatineau Park

Gatineau Park is located in the Outaouais region of Quebec, Canada. Administered by the National Capital Commission as part of the National Capital Region, Gatineau Park is a 361 square kilometres wedge of land extending north and west from the city of Gatineau QC. With a perimeter of 179.2 kilometres, the park includes parts of the municipalities of Chelsea, Pontiac, La Pêche, and the City of Gatineau. The main entrance to the park is 4 kilometres north of downtown Ottawa, Ontario. The parks area has a long history of human inhabitation and usage predating the arrival of European settlers. Its more recent pre-park history includes various forms of human exploitation such as farming, logging, hunting, and industrial activity. The idea of creating a park in the Gatineau Hills for recreational purposes was proposed as early as 1903. In 1938 money was allotted for the acquisition of Gatineau woodlands and the construction of a parkway. The Government of Canada maintains a conference centre at Meech Lake, known as Willson House, the site of meetings leading to a failed attempt to reform Canadas Constitution in 1987, the Meech Lake Accord. There are significant ongoing controversies about the administration of the park, including its status as the only federal park that is not part of the national parks system, the existence and construction of private residences inside it, residents extensive violation of shoreline protection bylaws at Meech Lake, and changes to its boundaries without the knowledge of parliament.

Robert Guertin Centre

The Robert Guertin Centre is a 4,000 capacity multi-purpose arena in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. It is considered by many Gatineau residents, particularly of the Hull sector, as a cultural and sport heritage location for the region. It was built in 1957 and is home to the Gatineau Olympiques ice hockey team. The arena also briefly hosted the Ottawa 67s in 1967, while the Ottawa Civic Centre was under construction. The arena hosted the Memorial Cup in 1997, 1982, and 1958. It is also the site of an international midget hockey tournament which is held every January. There were several discussions regarding the future of the arena as the structure showed signs of deterioration. It was in 2001, that team owners of the Olympiques first discussed the idea of playing at a new rink with a larger capacity. Renovations were made to the arena in 2003 and 2004 but it slightly reduced the number of seats due to safety reasons. In May 2011, it was announced that a new 5,000 seat arena would be built on the same site. The old arena would be demolished. The estimated cost of the new arena is $63 million. Between 1992 and 1994, the Arena also hosted the March and June events for World Wrestling Entertainment due to the TD Place Arena at Lansdowne Park having other events scheduled. These were held on the last Friday of the month, and unlike the TD Arena which only used four floodlights from the scoreboard to light the ring, Robert Guertin Centre was able to house a fully operating light and laser grid like those seen on televised wrestling events. In June of 1994, the Quebecers defeated the Headshrinkers in a WWF Tag Team Championship match by pinfall; however the belts were retained by the Headshrinkers, which caused anger amongst fans present at the event.

Les Promenades Gatineau

Les Promenades Gatineau is a major shopping centre located in Canadas National Capital Region. It is located in the city of Gatineau near the intersection of Greber and Maloney Boulevards, one of the citys busiest intersections and just off Autoroute 50. It is the citys biggest mall by retail space and clientele. It is considered to be the second largest shopping centre in the area in terms of retail space trailing only St. Laurent Shopping Centres 972,000 square feet . The website claims it has about 845,000 square feet in total space including its three-story office building in the south side of the complex that houses a dental clinic and federal government offices. The mall is sprawled out on one single level with several secondary corridors and sections lined up in different directions which makes it difficult to locate smaller boutiques. The shopping centre does have several anchor tenants which includes la Baie, Costco, Laura and Archambault. It is located in the middle of a major shopping district in the Gatineau sector in which several other strip-malls and big-box stores are lined-up all along Maloney or Greber Boulevards in and around Les Promenades. The Village Greber is located just across Maloney and les Galeries Gatineau which includes Target, The Brick and Best Buy is just across its eastern street. In addition, several small stores and restaurants are located scattered on its northern parking lot. The Polyvalente Le Carrefour High School is located just across the street from Chemin de La Savane. During the lunch hours, numerous teens from the school cross the street to the mall. Since its acquisition by Oxford Properties, the mall has begun a major large-scale renovation project with the goal of both reinforcing essential infrastructure of the building as well as raising the profile of the centre. In recent years, the mall as increasingly been known for hosting specialty clothing retail stores not present at malls elsewhere in the region. There was also major modifications being made to the retail floor space in anticipation of the arrival of numerous new tenants as well as the departure of others. Since the commencement of renovations in late 2012 several new stores have been added such as fashion retailers HM and Forever 21, joining the roster alongside existing retailers Garage, Amnesia, Dynamite, Caveau des Jeans, Jack Jones, Claire-France and The Bay. Laura, one of the previous anchor tenants closed in late 2014, with the remaining space to be occupied by La Maison Simons, which is slated to open in August 2015. In addition, the mall also welcomes the arrival of Starbucks in September 2013 and DavidsTea the following year. According to various surveys, almost 80% of its shoppers are women and the average age is 38.

Where is this?

GuRoute likes to place attractions inside other attractions. So, maybe it's in a city, or maybe it's inside a particular park in that city. Maybe your attraction is a huge park that spans half the county, or multiple counties.

Determining where this attraction is gives it context - if it's in a park, you'll be able to see it alongside all the other attractions in that park. And that helps define the park.

GuRoute will automatically calculate a parent region for this attraction. You can change it if there is something more appropriate.
