Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Founded in 1769 by Manuel Sepúlveda, its population of 1,509,939 inhabitants makes it the tenth most populous city in the country and the centre of Brazil's fourth largest metropolitan area, with 4,405,760 inhabitants . The city is the southernmost capital city of a Brazilian state. Porto Alegre was founded in 1769 by Manuel Jorge Gomes de Sepúlveda, who used the pseudonym José Marcelino de Figueiredo to hide his identity; but the official date is 1772 with the act signed by immigrants from the Azores, Portugal. The vast majority of the population is of European descent. The city lies on the eastern bank of the Rio Guaiba , where five rivers converge to form the Lagoa dos Patos , a giant freshwater lagoon navigable by even the largest of ships. This five-river junction has become an important alluvial port as well as a chief industrial and commercial center of Brazil. In recent years, Porto Alegre hosted the World Social Forum, an initiative of several non-government organizations. The city became famous for being the first city that implemented participatory budgeting. The 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches was held in Porto Alegre in 2006. Since 2000, Porto Alegre also hosts one of the world's largest free software events, called FISL. The city was one of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, having previously been a venue for the 1950 FIFA World Cup.

Canela

Canela, meaning Cinnamon in Portuguese and Spanish, is a town located in the Serra Gaúcha of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Both Canela and neighboring Gramado are important tourist resorts and they both draw many visitors each year. Ecotourism is very popular in the area and there are many opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding and river rafting. The main tourist attraction in Canela is the Parque do Caracol, the Cathedral of Stone, and Caracol Falls . Like sister town Gramado, Canela is a large tourist draw during the winter, where snowfall can occur, and during the Christmas holiday and the local town council deck Canela with lights and other festive decorations. Canela is part of the Rota Romântica or Romantic Route, a scenic bypass.

Museu de Ciências Naturais da Fundação Zoobotânica do Rio Grande do Sul

The Museu de Ciências Naturais da Fundação Zoobotânica do Rio Grande do Sul, is a Brazilian museum located inside the Porto Alegre Botanical Garden. Open from Monday to Sunday 9am to 12pm and from 13h30 to 17h. Emerged in 1954 from the breakup of a natural history collection of the Júlio de Castilhos Museum. The permanent exhibition features 49 windows, that approach the richness of species native to Rio Grande do Sul, both flora and fauna. The show is organized in an evolutionary sequence: plant today, groups of animals and paleontological showcases. In this way, show the characteristic fauna of various ecosystems of the state: swamp, field and forest.

Museum Daniel Cargnin

The Museum Daniel Cargnin is located at Rua do Comércio, 825 in the city of Mata, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It received its name in honor of priest and paleontologist Daniel Cargnin, which collected more than 80 percent of fossils in the region of Mata. It is a museum of Paleorrota Geopark. With a collection of 2,500 pieces fossil plants and animals. The region is a center for information and guidance on the geopark of paleorrota. Near there is the Garden of paleobotany, located at street Rua do Sertão, 67, an area of 36.000 m ², with fossil and petrified wood, serves as a field of study and tourism. Attached is a house of culture that houses a machine manufacturing German Deutz in the 30s who drives a generator providing electricity to the city.

Jaguarão

Jaguarão is a municipality in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul located on the shores of the Jaguarão River, bordering Uruguay, and a short distance inland from the Mirim Lagoon. In 1865 it was the site of the Battle of Jaguarão. Located in the extreme south of Brazil and the border with Uruguay, the Baron of Mauá International Bridge links it with Río Branco.

Santa Vitória do Palmar

Santa Vitória do Palmar is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. To the west of the municipality is the Lagoa Mirim and beyond that is Uruguay; to the east is the Atlantic Ocean and to the north is the city of Rio Grande. To the south it borders the municipality of Chuí and Uruguay. The city proper is located approximately 16 km inland from the Atlantic, 8 km east of Lagoa Mirim and 20 km north of the Uruguayan border at Chuí. The city is traversed by the Brazilian federal highway BR-471, the most important road link between Brazil and Uruguay. It is 504 km by road from the state capital, Porto Alegre, and about 370 km from Uruguay's capital, Montevideo. Santa Vitória do Palmar used to be the southernmost city in Brazil, until the former village of Chuí was split from its territory and incorporated as a new city in 1997. However, while the urban seat of Chuí is more southerly, the territory of Santa Vitória do Palmar still extends slightly further south than Chuí's, and contains Brazil's southernmost geographic point, located on a bend of the Chuí River just upstream from its mouth on the Atlantic Ocean, near the village of Barra do Chuí, which also belongs to the municipality. The municipality lies on a windy coastal plain which is a mosaic of sand dunes, lagoons (Lagoa Mangueira being the largest one), marshland spots and rice farms. This variety of different ecosystems side by side ensures a rich biodiversity, protected in the municipality's northern part in the Taim Ecological Station, shared with Rio Grande. The city's economy is based on rice growing, beef cattle and sheep raised for wool, in addition to being a transit point on BR-471, the main highway linking Brazil and Uruguay. Santa Vitória do Palmar is a large municipality, about 160 km long North-South. Its coast also includes the larger part of Cassino Beach, the world's longest uninterrupted stretch of sandy ocean shore, over 240 km from the stony breakwaters of Rio Grande in the north to the mouth of Chuí River in the south. Two small beach resort villages are located in the municipality: Praia do Hermenegildo and Barra do Chuí, which is Brazil's southernmost inhabited place. Four stones from the Santa Vitoria do Palmar meteorite was found near the town in 2003 and 2004.

Júlio de Castilhos Museum

Júlio de Castilhos Museum is a museum located in the city of Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). It is the oldest museum in Rio Grande do Sul state. Its collection, over 10 thousand pieces, is Brazilian national heritage, and comprises objects of historical, artistic, ethnographic and archaeological character, mostly related to the history of Rio Grande do Sul. Its sections for the Ragamuffin War and the Paraguayan War are specially rich. The museum also preserves a few but very important examples of sculptures produced within Indian Reductions by Jesuits and indigenous peoples.

Caracol Falls

Caracol Falls, or Cascata do Caracol, is a 426-foot waterfall about 4.35 miles from Canela, Brazil in Caracol State Park . It is formed by the Caracol River and cuts out of basalt cliffs in the Serra Geral mountain range, falling into the Vale da Lageana. The falls are situated between the pinheiral zone of the Brazilian Highlands and the southern coastal Atlantic Forest. The base of the waterfall can be reached by a steep 927-step trail maintained by the Projeto Lobo-Guará. Waterfall has formed on the basalt rocks of Serra Geral formation and has two cascades. Upper cascade is located approximately 100 m before the second cascade, which falls over an overhanging cliff ledge. Caracol Falls has long attracted visitors and is the second most popular natural tourist attraction in Brazil, trailing only Iguazu Falls. In 2009, it received more than 289,000 visitors. There is a nearby 100-foot observation tower that offers an elevator and a panoramic view, as well as a cable car that gives tourists an aerial view of the waterfall. The area also provides a restaurant and craft stalls.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, also known as Cathedral of Stone, is a Catholic church located in the Brazilian city of Canela, Rio Grande do Sul. It is considered one of the major tourist attraction of the Serra Gaúcha. Its characteristic style is English Gothic. The church has a tower with 65 meters high, and a carillon of 12 bells made of bronze by foundry Giacomo Crespi, Italy. In its interior are three panels consisting of painted canvases by the gaucho artist Marciano Schmitz, depicting the "Apparition of Our Lady", the "Allegory of the Angels", and "Annunciation". The paintings of Via Sacra were made by Pablo Herrera, a Uruguayan sculptor and restorer of Sacred Art. Wood and clay were used, with the background painting having superimposed images in clay. Its stained glasses represent the litany of Our Lady. The altar, whose theme is the Last Supper, is a work of art carved in by wood Julius Tixe, a Uruguayan sculptor.

Lagoon Mirim

Lagoon Mirim or Merín is a large estuarine lagoon which extends from southern Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil into eastern Uruguay. Lagoa Mirim is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a sandy, partially barren isthmus. Lagoon Mirim is about 108 miles long by 6 to 22 miles wide and 62.250 km2. It is more irregular in outline than its larger neighbor to the north, Lagoa dos Patos, and discharges into the latter through São Gonçalo Channel, which is navigable by small boats. Lagoa Mirim has no direct connection to the Atlantic, but the Rio Grande, a tidal channel about 24 miles long which connects Lagoon dos Patos to the Atlantic, affords an entrance to the navigable inland waters of both lagoons and several small ports. The southern part of the lake lies in Uruguayan territory, but its navigation, as determined by treaty, belongs exclusively to Brazil. Both lagoons are the remains of an ancient depression in the coastline shut in by sand beaches built up by the combined action of wind and oceanic currents. They are at the same level as the ocean, but their waters are affected by the tides and are brackish only a short distance above the Rio Grande outlet. The Jaguarão/Yaguarón River, which forms part of the Brazil-Uruguay boundary line, empties into Lagoon Mirim, and is navigable 26 miles up to and beyond the twin towns of Jaguarão and Rio Branco . On the Uruguayan side apart from the Yaguarón River, the Cebollatí River and the Tacuarí River empty into the Lagoon Mirim. The amount of water received by the lagoon is greater from the Uruguayan side.

Pico do Monte Negro

Pico do Monte Negro is the highest mountain in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, at 1,398 metres . It is located in the canyon of same name, more precisely at the city of São José dos Ausentes. The peak is considered easy to reach. By car, it is possible to reach the base of the mountain, with the rest of the way being travelled by foot. All the mountain and its surroundings are covered by a dense Araucaria forest.

The temple was dedicated by LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley on December 17, 2000. The temple sits on a hill in Porto Alegre's Vila Jardim district. The Porto Alegre Temple overlooks the city from the east toward a large river and port for which the city is named. It has an exterior of white granite and a single spire topped with a statue of the angel Moroni. The temple has a total of 10,700 square feet , two ordinance rooms, and two sealing rooms. The Porto Alegre Temple was the last temple of the LDS Church to be dedicated in the 20th century.

Praia da Guarita

It borders with Santa Catarina and can be accessed through two roads, the BR-101 and the RS-389, which is the last road before reaching the sea. The city of Torres is 197 km far from Porto Alegre and 280 km far from Florianópolis. The beach is located between the "towers" the city is named after, and is flanked by the Morro das Furnas to the north and the Morro da Guarita to the south. It includes an environmentally-protected area, the Parque da Guarita.

Godoy House

The Godoy House is a historic building on Independência Avenue in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The house is one of the rare remaining buildings in the Art Nouveau style in Porto Alegre, dating from 1907. Aside from its architectural importance, the house saw intense social activity throughout its history. It was originally built for Arno Bastian Meyer and his family between 1904-1907. Later, with the separation of the Meyers, the house was rented to the Greco family. In 1926 businessman Francisco Tschiedel purchased the house, and in 1939 it was acquired by the psychiatrist doctor Jacintho Godoy, an illustrious social figure of the time, and the house became the meeting point for notables of Porto Alegres society between the years of 1939 and 1959. The house was built utilizing imported technology at the time, with masonry and iron works in harmony with its style. Much care was taken with every detail of the house, from the choice of materials used, to the embellishments and ceilings and walls, and furniture, forming a notable coherent style throughout. The architect, Hermann Menschen, was a German immigrant who worked for Rudolph Ahrons renowned engineering company, and was responsible for its projects department until 1907. The houses three stories, totaling 719.39 m2, are divided as ground floor, second floor, and loft. The facade is embellished with floral and whiplash motifs characteristic of the style, and elaborated wrought iron bars adorn the windows on the ground floor. The only opening to the loft is framed in an impressive gable that dominates the facade. Above the front door there is a relatively small stained glass window. The interior, Dr. Godoy installed his home office on the ground floor where the above-ground cellar used to be, connected to the rear of the house where the kitchen, annex, and backyard are located. On the second floor, a hallway interconnects the four bedrooms and the bathroom. On the front part of the house on the second floor was located the drawing room, and to the rear the dining room, smoking room, and music room, all connected to a veranda with ornate iron balustrade. Many notable frescoes, stained glass, and decor remain, reminiscent from the original construction. The Godoy House was listed for preservation in November 26, 1996, and acquired by the City Hall. Since 1998, the Coordenação da Memória Cultural da Secretaria Municipal de Cultura e a Equipe do Patrimônio Histórico e Cultural operates at the house.
