Banja Luka

Banja Luka is the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the capital Sarajevo and is the largest city of the Republika Srpska entity. Traditionally, it has been the center of the Bosanska Krajina region, located in the northwestern part of the country. It is home of the University of Banja Luka, as well as numerous state and entity institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city lies on the River Vrbas and is well known in the countries of the former Yugoslavia for being full of tree-lined avenues, boulevards, gardens, and parks. According to the 2013 census the Settlement of Banja Luka has 150,997 inhabitants, while the City of Banja Luka, which represents Banja Luka's wider area , has 199,191 inhabitants.

Prijedor

Prijedor is a city and municipality in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina with an estimated population of 97,588 people within its administrative limits. Prijedor is part of the Republika Srpska entity and is situated in the Bosanska Krajina region. Prijedor is the third largest municipality in the Republika Srpska entity, after Banja Luka and Bijeljina, and the seventh largest in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is an economically prosperous municipality hosting a wide range of industries, services and educational institutions. The city's geographical location close to major European capitals has made it an important industrial and commercial hub nationally. Prijedor is known for its Catholic, Orthodox Christian and Islamic heritage. Historic buildings from the Ottoman and Austrian-Hungarian periods are a feature of the urban landscape. The city underwent extensive renovation between 2006-2009.

Trebinje

Trebinje is the southernmost municipality and city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Located in East Herzegovina, it is part of the Republika Srpska entity, and its population numbers 31,433 . The Trebišnjica river flows through the heart of the city. The city's old town quarter dates to the 18th-century Ottoman period, and includes the Arslanagić Bridge.

Bijeljina

Bijeljina is a city and municipality in northeastern Republika Srpska, which is one of two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city is the second largest in the Republika Srpska entity after Banja Luka and fifth largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina (after Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla and Zenica), and is situated on the plains of Semberija. Bijeljina is the unofficial center of eastern part of Republika Srpska, with 114,663 inhabitants. Bijeljina is located at 6 km from the border with Serbia and 40 km from the border with Croatia.

Zvornik

Zvornik is a city on the Drina river in north-eastern, Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated in the Republika Srpska entity. Zvornik is located south of Bijeljina. The town Mali Zvornik lies directly across the river in Serbia.

Sipovo

Šipovo is a town and municipality in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is situated in the western part of the Republika Srpska entity and the southern part of the Bosanska Krajina region. The municipality covers an area of 510 km2 , much of which is forested.

Novo Goražde , also known as Ustiprača, is a municipality of Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The other part of the pre-war municipality is now in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Skakavac Waterfall

Skakavac waterfall is formed on the Perućica, a mountain creek, in Perućica primeval forest, which is regulated as a Strict Nature Reserve as part of Sutjeska National Park in Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is one of the highest waterfalls in the country, at about 75 metres in height. The Perućica primeval forest of beech and spruce is situated beneath Maglić, the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and separated from Zelengora mountain by the canyon of the Sutjeska river. Perućica creek cuts through the Perućica forest and descends between two steep Maglić slopes. Near the middle of its course, the stream cascades from the upper hanging valley to the lower valley, falling 75 meters from a karstic limestone precipice to reach its confluence with the Sutjeska river in the valley of Tjentište.

Cathedral of Saint Bonaventure

The Cathedral of Saint Bonaventure in Banja Luka is one of four Roman Catholic cathedrals in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the seat of the Banja Luka Bishopric currently led by Bishop Franjo Komarica. The Cathedral was built in honor of Saint Bonaventure, a Franciscan theologian from the Middle Ages. It was constructed by Alfred Pichler in the 1970s after the original had been damaged in an earthquake. The building suffered damage in the Bosnian War, but was reinaugurated in 2001 after the completion of repairs.

Mariastern Abbey

Mariastern Abbey is Trappist abbey in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated near the country's second largest city Banja Luka. It consists of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the monastery of Trappist monks. It is the only Trappist monastery in Southeastern Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, with 219 monks, the Abbey was the largest Trappist abbey in the world; today it is the smallest, with only two monks.

Ratko Perić acts as bishop to the Trebinje-Mrkan Bishopric as well as the Mostar-Duvno Bishopric. It is named after the birth of Mary, mother of Jesus.

Kozara National Park

Kozara National Park is a national park that was proclaimed a protected national forest in 1967 by Josip Broz Tito. It is situated between the rivers Una, Sava, Sana and Vrbas, in the Republika Srpska entity of BiH. These 33.75 square kilometers of dense forest and hilly meadows have earned the nickname Green Beauty of Krajina. Kozara is a popular hunting ground, with a large 180 square kilometers area of the park open to regulated hunting of deer, pheasants, foxes, boars, hares, and ducks. A smaller part of the park is designated for nature lovers. Walking, hiking, biking and herb picking are among the many activities in Kozara. Kozara was also a former battleground during World War II. The Partisans intimate knowledge of Bosnias rough terrain gave them an advantage over the newly occupying Nazi Germans.

Sutjeska National Park

The Sutjeska National Park is a national park located in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Republika Srpska entity. Established in 1962, it is Bosnia and Herzegovinas oldest national park. It includes the highest peak of Maglić at over 2,386 metres, on the border with Montenegro. The Montenegrin part of Maglić massif in the park has also formed the Trnovačko Jezero . The Strict Nature Reserve “Perućica”, one of the last two remaining primeval forests in Europe, is part of the park. The park is also famous as being the location of the Battle of the Sutjeska in 1943 during World War II. It is an affiliated member of EUROPARC Federation.

Monument to the Revolution

Monument to the Revolution is a World War II memorial sculpture by Dušan Džamonja, located at Mrakovica, one of the highest peaks of Kozara mountain, Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is dedicated to the fierce battle and 2.500 Yugoslav partisan fighters and 68.500 mostly Serb civilians killed or deported in Ustaše concentration camps during German-Ustaše-Hungarian Kozara Offensive from June to July 1942. Initiative for the Monument construction began in 1969 and Dušan Džamonja won the first prize for his project. Construction of the Monument was done until 1972. Džamonja himself described the Monument as the game of light and darkness; this cylindrical-shaped Monument is composed of twenty vertical segments and every of them is characterized by deep steel-covered bulges and hollows . While negatives symbolize death, positives represent victory and life. Horizontally sited concrete blocs are the symbols of enemy forces who are trying to destroy life and victory but are unsuccessful. Other parts of the memorial complex are the Museum and the Memorial wall with the names of 9.921 Yugoslav partisans killed in fightings on Kozara during the World War II in Yugoslavia.

Jahorina

Jahorina is a mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located near Pale in the Dinaric Alps. It borders Mount Trebević, which is another Olympic mountain. Jahorinas highest peak, Ogorjelica, has a summit elevation of 1,916 metres, making it the second highest of Sarajevos mountains, after Bjelašnica at 2,067 m . Mount Jahorina hosted the womens alpine skiing events of the 1984 Winter Olympics. Jahorina is located 15 km from Pale and 30 km from Sarajevo. The international airport in Sarajevo is located 33 km from Jahorina, connected with the ski resort by a new motorway.

Volujak

Volujak is a mountain range on the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, within the entity of the Republika Srpska. Geologically, Volujak is a subrange of the Dinaric Alps and formed largely of secondary and tertiary sedimentary rock, mostly limestone and dolomite. It basically forms a long ridge on the southwest side of the Suhja valley, with the border between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro running alongside this ridge, where a sharp corner of BiH territory reaches into Montenegro. It is on the BiH side located within the Sutjeska National Park but has a protected status also on the Montegrin side. Notable peaks are Volujak (2,337 metres (7,667 ft)), Studenac (2,296 metres (7,533 ft)), Badnjine (2,245 metres (7,365 ft)) and Trnovački Durmitor (2,232 metres (7,323 ft)). Right at the northern foot of this last peak is the beautiful Trnovačko Lake situated. The Volujak range borders north-east on the Suhja valley and Maglić, on the south west side on the Izgori valley and the Lebršnik mountain group, in the north west by the Sutjeska valley and on the south east side by the Bioč range. Volujak peak is the second highest elevation point in Bosnia Herzegovina. From its summit hikers obtain an impressive view of the surrounding peaks: Maglić, Veliko Vitao and, in the distance, Durmitor.

Ozren

Ozren is a mountain in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It lies between cities of Doboj and Zavidovići, partly in the Federation and partly in the Republika Srpska entity. Ozren is rich in natural resources. It abounds in drinkable water springs surrounded by clean nature, thermal wells with healing effects, ore and mineral resources. Its highest peak, Kraljica, is 918 meters high.

Trebević

Trebević is a mountain in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is found directly to the southeast of Sarajevo, territory of East Sarajevo city, bordering Jahorina mountain. Trebević is 1627 meters tall, making it the second shortest of the Sarajevo mountains. During the Middle Ages, Trebević was known as Zlatni Do. During the 1984 Winter Olympics Trebević, like the other Sarajevo mountains, was used for a number of Olympic events, such as bobsledding. During the Siege of Sarajevo, Trebević took on a darker role as its elevations proved ideal positions for besieging artillery and the mountain became a key fighting ground. Trebević today is not as important of a tourist destination as Igman or Bjelašnica, largely due to the heavy fighting that took place in the early 1990s. Still, most of the land mines are now cleared. There are numerous hotels, mountaineering homes, and other such structures on Trebević and the immediate area. Trebević has been the main excursion site of Sarajevo citizens due to the favorable geographical position, climate and the beauty of the nature. The biological diversity is among the highest and it is extraordinary to find such a phenomenon near the hearth of the big city. On the 9th of April 2014, Sarajevo Canton Assembly, announced Trebević as a protected area, in order to conserve and improve each element of the geographical and biological diversity.

Zvornik Castle

Zvornik Castle is a medieval castle located in Zvornik, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the mountain Mlađevac overlooking the Drina Valley. Zvornik fortress is situated at an altitude of 147 m.

Ugljevik

Ugljevik is a municipality and town in Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The municipality located in the eastern foothills of Mount Majevica, in picturesque countryside, where wondrous and beautiful mountain starts descending towards the flatlands of Semberija, to which it is tied more than any other surrounding area. The center of the municipality is the town of Ugljevik, the most sunbathed and modern of communities in the Republika Srpska entity. This is the home of miners and other energy resource professionals.

Rača Bridge

The Rača Bridge is an international bridge over the Sava river, from Sremska Rača in Serbia to Bosanska Rača in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Bridge of Maria of Yugoslavia was opened in 28 June 1934. The bridge was built by mainly Italian workers. On September 6, 2010, the Serbian government and Milorad Dodik opened the new Bridge of Europe, Boris Tadić said he hoped the bridge would further bring closer the peoples of both sides of the Sava river, contributing economically Serbia and the Republika Srpska entity.

Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge

The Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge is a historic bridge in Višegrad, over the Drina River in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was completed in 1577 by the Ottoman court architect Mimar Sinan on the order of the Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović. UNESCO included the facility in its 2007 World Heritage List.

Church of St. George, Sopotnica

The Church of Saint George, Sopotnica is a Serbian Orthodox church located at the village of Sopotnica in the Municipality of Novo Goražde in eastern Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The church stands at the left bank of the Drina River, 4 kilometres from the town of Goražde. It was built in 1454 by Stefan Vukčić Kosača, when Goražde was part of a region ruled by him. The region would later come to be known as Herzegovina, after Kosačas title Herceg of Saint Sava. Herzegovina was gradually conquered by the Ottoman Empire between 1465 and 1481. In the second half of the 16th century, during the office of Serbian Patriarch Makarije Sokolović, the church was enlarged on its western side. It was repaired in 1869, when a metal door was installed at its entrance, which was donated by a Serb from Sarajevo. Remains of its old frescoes were then carefully collected and buried beside the churchs wall. A bell tower was added at the churchs western side in 1894. At the beginning of the Bosnian War, the church was shelled and set on fire in September 1992. It remained roofless until October 1994, when a temporary roof was installed. The church was restored between 2000 and 2002, and in 2008, it was designated as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1519, at the beginning of the Ottoman rule over Herzegovina, one of the earliest printing houses among the Serbs was established at the church. Known as the Goražde printing house, it was the first such facility in the territory of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. It produced three books: a hieratikon in 1519, a psalter in 1521, and a small euchologion in 1523.

Dobrićevo Monastery

Dobrićevo Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery built in the first half of the 13th century in the Kingdom of Serbia . The building was originally built by the river Trebišnjica and moved in 1964 to the village Orah in the municipality of Bileća because its original location was flooded after hydro power plant near Bileća was completed in 1965.

Gomionica Monastery

The Gomionica Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located at the village of Kmećani, 42 kilometres west of Banja Luka, in the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The monastery is the spiritual centre of the region known as Zmijanje, and its church is dedicated to the Presentation of Mary. It was founded before 1536, though the exact date of its foundation is unknown. It was referred to as Zalužje in 16th-century sources, while its current name comes from a nearby river. In the second half of the 16th century, the abbot of the monastery was credited by the Ottomans for the peaceful attitude of the population of a wide area around Gomionica. The monastery may have been abandoned, at least partially, at the end of the 17th century, and during the 1730s. The church was refurbished several times during the 18th and 19th centuries. Writer Petar Kočić attended the elementary school organised at the monastery. It was badly damaged in World War II, and its abbot Serafim Štrkić was murdered in 1941 by the Ustaše, Croatian fascists. After the war, Gomionica was turned into a nunnery. In 1953, the monastery was designated as a cultural monument of Yugoslavia, and in 2006, it was proclaimed a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The treasury of Gomionica contains icons created in the 16th to 19th centuries, as well as manuscripts and printed books created in the 14th to 17th centuries. A silver-gilt cross formerly owned by the monastery, made in 1640, is now in the collection of the University of London, which acquired it from the private collection of Thomas Gambier Parry.

Ozren Monastery

The Ozren Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located 6 kilometres from the town of Petrovo in northern Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The patron saint of the monastery is Saint Nicholas, and it is the spiritual centre of the area of Mount Ozren. It was probably founded in the second half of the 16th century, during the office of Serbian Patriarch Makarije Sokolović, who was granted permission from the sultan of the Ottoman Empire to renovate and build churches and monasteries. Folk tradition, formed in the 18th century, has it that the Ozren Monastery was founded by King Dragutin, a member of the Serbian Nemanjić dynasty, who ruled north-eastern Bosnia from 1284 to 1316. The frescoes in the monasterys church were painted in the early 17th century. After the Great Turkish War, the monastery fell into disrepair. The renovation of the church began in 1842, after it was allowed by Ottoman authorities. The bell tower outside the church was built in 1872. The church was also refurbished in 1920 and 1996. Among its icons is a Pietà painted in the 17th century by Emmanuel Lambardos, a painter of the Cretan School. The Ozren Monastery was designated as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2003.

Papraća Monastery

The Papraća Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located in the village of Papraća, at the source of the same-named river, in the Municipality of Šekovići, eastern Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The monasterys church is dedicated to the Annunciation. The date of its foundation is unknown, but contemporary Ottoman documents give evidence that the monastery existed in the first half of the 16th century. The monks of Papraća had contacts with Russian rulers in the 16th and 17th centuries, and they often travelled to Russia to raise funds and donations. In 1551, the monks travelled to Moscow through Volhynia in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, where they received a manuscript Gospel Book from Prince Dymitr Sanguszko, who was a grandson of Serbian Despot Jovan Branković. Several years later, also in Volhynia, another group of Papraća monks received a psalter from a man named Nikola the Serb. In 1559, Papraća monks helped build a new church at the Tronoša Monastery in western Serbia. In 1645, Russian Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich granted a charter permitting the monks of Papraća to collect donations in Russia once every eight years. They managed to travel to Russia even during the Great Turkish War . The monastery was abandoned and ruined after the Austro-Turkish War of 1716–18. Its church was rebuilt in 1853, after the construction works were allowed by Ottoman authorities. The rebuilding was helped by funds from Serbs of Sarajevo. The church was further refurbished in the following years, and it was consecrated in 1869. Monastic life was restored in Papraća in 1880. During World War II, the monastery was ruined and its valuables were stolen. It was partially repaired in 1954, mostly through efforts by nun Varvara Božić from the Tavna Monastery. After further renovations, it was consecrated on 21 September 1975. The Papraća Monastery was designated as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2005.

Željeznica

The Željeznica is a river in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which rises at the foot of the Treskavica Mountain. It has a number of rapids and whirlpools, including those of Turovi. Kazani is regarded the most attractive place in the canyon, where round hollows, "kettles", give the impression of boiling water. The kettles are about half to one meter deep and 0,30 to 0,70 cm wide in radius, and they are frequent in the riverbed. The Željeznica river is one of the chief geographic features of the western Sarajevo field . It flows through the municipalities Trnovo and Istočna Ilidža from south and eventually meets up with the Bosna river near Ilidža, Sarajevo. The Željeznica river is the western boundary of Jahorina mountain. The archaeological site of Butmir is located on the right bank of the Željeznica river, relatively close to the source of the Bosna river. The terrace next to the Željeznica river was well suited to late Neolithic settlement.
