Luanda

Luanda is a province of Angola. It has an area of 2,417 square kilometres and a population of 6,542,942 in 2014. Luanda is the capital of the province and the country of Angola. Despite this, the city occupies 113 square kilometres , or less than five percent of the total area of the province. In 2011 Luanda Province was subdivided into seven municipalities, namely, Luanda, Belas, Cacuaco, Cazenga, Icolo e Bengo, Quiçama and Viana. These are again subdivided into 47 Communes . The new reform of 2011 moved the municipalities Icolo e Bengo and Quiçama from Bengo to Luanda Province. The administrative reform significantly increased the land area of Luanda Province. Governors of the Luanda Province have included: Francisca Espírito Santo , Jose Maria dos Santos , and Graciano Francisco Domingos . The province has created the Instituto de Planeamento e Gestão Urbana de Luanda (IPGUL, Institute for urban planning and management of Luanda) as an independent organ for urban planning of the province. The original Luanda Province grew in size during the 20th century due to the urbanization of Angola. It was divided into the provinces of Luanda and Bengo in 1980.

Namibe

Namibe is a province of Angola, previously known as Moçâmedes when under Portuguese rule. It has an area of 57,091 km² and had a 2014 census population of 471,613. The port and city of Namibe is the capital of the province with a population of 132,900 in 2004. Iona National Park lies within the province.

Lunda Sul

Lunda Sul Province is not to be confused with Luanda Sul, a satellite city of Luanda, the capital of Angola. Lunda Sul is a province of Angola. It has an area of 77,637 km² and a 2014 census population of 516,077. Saurimo is the capital of the province.

Benguela

Benguela is a province of Angola, situated in the west of the country. It lies on the Atlantic Ocean, and borders the provinces of Cuanza Sul, Namibe, Huila, and Huambo. The province has an area of 39,826 square kilometres and its capital is Benguela. According to 1988 US government statistics, the population had 297,700 urban inhabitants and 308,800 rural inhabitants, with an estimated total provincial population of 606,500. The current governor of Benguela is Isaac dos Anjos.

Bengo

Bengo is a province of Angola. Its capital is Caxito. According to 1988 statistics, there were 18,700 people living in urban areas with 137,400 in rural areas, with a total of 156,100 residents. It has an area of 33,016 square kilometres, and its current population is approximately 450,000. The province had been created in 1980 by dividing the original province Luanda into Bengo and the then smaller province Luanda.

Lunda Norte

Lunda Norte is a province of Angola. It has an area of 103,760 km² and a population of 799,950. Angola's first President, Agostino Neto, made Lucapa the provincial capital after independence, but the capital was later moved to Dundo. The province borders the Democratic Republic of Congo in the northeast and Lunda Sul in the south. Municipalities in this province include Capemba-Camulemba, Caumbo, Caungula, Chitato, Cuango, Cuilo, Lubalo, Lucapa, and Shah-Muteba. The province is rich in gold and diamonds, but remains vastly underdeveloped and impoverished. UNITA used the money generated from the sale of diamonds to fund war efforts. Cuango River valley, the richest diamond area of Angola is located in the province. Mining is done by notable companies like DeBeers and Endiama. The Lunda province whose capital was Saurimo was created by the Portuguese colonial empire on July 13, 1895. It was divided into Lunda-Sul and Lunda-Norte subdivisions through a constitution act in 1978 by the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola government. Iron and manganese mining are also important economic activities. It is well known for its sculptures. The most notable one is the The Thinker a sculpture of a man holding his head. It is rich in terms of flora and fauna. Lunda Norte is populated by Chokwe, Lunda, and other ethnical groups. Ernesto Muangala is the current governor of the province. Lino dos Santos, Deolinda Odia Paulo Satula Vilarinho and Ângêlica Nené Curita Ihungo are the deputy governors for Technical and Infrastructure Services, Economic Sector Area and Political and Social Sector Area respectively. An ethnographic museum located in the province attracts a large number of tourists. During the Angolan Civil War a large number of civilians were killed in the clashes between National Union for the Total Independence of Angola and Angolan Armed Forces . Diamond mining operations were also affected. A large number of landmines laid during the civil war are still present in the province. Leprosy and Elephantiasis are major disease which affect the province.

Huambo

Huambo is a province of Angola. With an area of 34,270 km2 it is one of the geographically smaller provinces, situated in the Central Region approximately 450 km south east of the capital, Luanda. The province has an estimated population of 1.9 million people, approximately 15% of the national total of 15.7 million. More than half, 55%, of the population is urbanized, concentrated in Huambo city and Caála municipality .

Moxico

Moxico or Moshiko is the largest province of the African nation of Angola. It has an area of 223,023 square kilometres , and covers 18% of the landmass of Angola. The province has a population of 727,594 and a population density of approximately 2.8 residents per km2 , making it one of the most sparsely populated areas of Angola. The population of the province is in flux; displaced residents have slowly returned to Moxico since the end of the Angolan Civil War in 2002. The war left Moxico as one of the most landmine-contaminated places in the world. The governor of the province is João Ernesto dos Santos. Luena is the capital of the Moxico Province, and is located 1,314 kilometres from the Angolan capitol of Luanda.

Huila Province

Huíla is a province of Angola. It has an area of 79,023 square kilometres and a population of 2,354,398 . Lubango is the capital of the province. Basket-making is a significant industry in the province; many make baskets out of reeds.

Malanje Province

Malanje is a province of Angola. It has an area of 97,602 km² and a 2014 census population of 968,135. Malanje is the capital of the province.

Cabinda

Cabinda (also spelled Kabinda, formerly Portuguese Congo, known locally as Tchiowa) is an exclave and province of Angola, a status that has been disputed by many political organizations in the territory. The capital city is also called Cabinda. The province is divided into four municipalities—Belize, Buco Zau, Cabinda and Landana. Modern Cabinda is the result of a fusion of three kingdoms: N'Goyo, Loango and Kakongo. It has an area of 7,270 km2 (2,810 sq mi) and a population of 688,285 (2014 census). According to 1988 United States government statistics, the total population of the province was 147,200, with a near even split between total rural and urban populations. At one point an estimated one third of Cabindans were refugees living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; however, after the 2007 peace agreement, refugees started returning home. Cabinda is separated from the rest of Angola by a narrow strip of territory belonging to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which bounds the province on the south and the east. Cabinda is bounded on the north by the Republic of the Congo, and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Adjacent to the coast are some of the largest offshore oil fields in the world. Petroleum exploration began in 1954 by the Cabinda Gulf Oil Company, when the territory was under Portuguese rule. Cabinda also produces hardwoods, coffee, cacao, rubber, and palm oil products, however, petroleum production accounts for most of Cabinda's domestic product. Cabinda produces 700,000 barrels (110,000 m3) of crude oil per day. Cabinda Oil is associated with Sonangol, Agip Angola Lda (41%), Chevron (39.2%), Total (10%) and Eni (9.8%). In 1885, the Treaty of Simulambuco established in Cabinda a protectorate of Portugal and a number of Cabindan independence movements consider the occupation of the territory by Angola illegal. While the Angolan Civil War largely ended in 2002, an armed struggle persists in the exclave of Cabinda, where some of the factions have proclaimed an independent Republic of Cabinda, with offices in Paris.

Cunene

Cunene is a province of Angola. It has an area of 87,342 km² and a population of approximately 965,000.

Zaire

Zaire is one of the 18 provinces of Angola. It occupies 40,130 square kilometres in the north west of the country and has a population of about 600,000 inhabitants. It is bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean, on the north by the Democratic Republic of Congo, on the east by the Uíge Province, and on the south by the Bengo Province.

Cuando Kubango

Cuando Cubango is a province of Angola and it has an area of 199,049 km2 and a population of approximately 510,000. Menongue is the capital of the province. The governor of the province is General Higino Carneiro. According to 1988 US government statistics, the provincial population was 125,600, with just 3,600 living in urban areas. Municipalities in this province include Calai, Cuangar, Cuchi, Cuito Cuanavale, Dirico, Longa, Mavinga, Menongue, Nancova, and Rivungo. The name of the province derives from that of the Cuando and Cubango rivers, which flow through the eastern and western edges of the province, respectively.

Uige

Uíge , one of the eighteen Provinces of Angola, is located in the northwestern part of the country. Its capital city is of the same name. Municipalities within the province include Alto Cauale, Ambuila, Bembe, Buengas, Bungo, Damba, Macocola, Milunga, Mucaba, Negage, Puri, Quimbele, Quitexe, Sanza Pombo, Songo, Uíge, and Zombo. Uige Province was one of the hardest-hit areas of Angola during the 26-year-long civil war. Large segments of the population were displaced, and the infrastructure was severely damaged. Beginning in October 2004 and continuing into 2005, Uige Province was the centre of an outbreak of Marburg hemorrhagic fever, a disease closely related to Ebola. It was caused by Marburg virus which is an African RNA virus that causes green monkey disease. Now thought to be under control, there were 374 cases with 88% deaths. According to the United Nations, it was, at the time, the world's worst epidemic of any kind of hemorrhagic fever.

Bié

Bié is a province of Angola located on the Bié Plateau in central part of country. Its capital is Kuito, which was called Silva Porto until independence from Portugal in 1975. The province has an area of 70,314 square kilometres and a population of 1,338,923. Municipalities in the province include Andulo, Camacupa, Catabola, Chinguar, Chitembo, Cuemba, Cunhinga, Kuito, and Nharea. The current governor of Bié is José Amaro Tati.

Cuanza Sul

Cuanza Sul Province or Kwanza-Sul is a province of Angola. It has an area of 55,660 square kilometres and a population of approximately 1,794,000. Sumbe is the capital of the province.

Cuanza Norte

The Cuanza Norte Province or Kwanza Norte Province is a province of Angola. N'Dalantando is the capital and the province has an area of 24,110 km² and a population of approximately 428,000. According to 1988 US government statistics, the province has a population of 365,100, with just 18,000 living in urban areas. Manuel Pedro Pacavira was born here and is a former provincial governor. The 1,400 meter long Capanda Dam is located in this province. Cuanza Norte lies on the northern bank of the Cuanza River. It had been a territory of Ngola Kingdom. In 1914, Norton de Matos created District of Cuanza which was divided into Cuanza Norte and Cuanza Sul Provinces in 1917. It was badly affected during the Angolan Civil War. It has a large number of mines left over from the Civil War and contracts to clear them were given to several organisations. During the civil war, the insurgents made the province part of the central zone. On 5 April 2001, National Union for the Total Independence of Angola members attacked Samba Caju and killed 120 FAA members. The province's military commander, General Recordacao was also killed in the attack. The most spoken languages are Chokwe, Kikongo and Kimbundu. Mbundu people inhabit the province. They are the second largest ethnic group of Angola after Ovimbundu people. Sugarcane and coffee are the most important agricultural crops. Their production is favoured by the tropical humid climate of the province.
