Tirana

Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania. Tirana became Albania’s capital city in 1920. Petrelë

Petrelë is a village and a former municipality 15 km south of Tirana, in central Albania. It is part of Tirana County. At the 2015 local government reform it became a subdivision of the municipality Tirana. The population at the 2011 census was 5,542. It is famous for its castle, history, and beautiful views.

Kavajë

Kavajë is a city and a municipality in Tirana County, centrally located in the Western Lowlands region of Albania. The present municipality was formed at the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities Kavajë, Golem, Helmas, Luz i Vogël and Synej, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the city Kavajë. The total population is 40,094 , in a total area of 198.81 square kilometres . The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 20,192. It was the seat of the former Kavajë District. It borders Durrës to the north, Tiranë to the east and Rrogozhinë to the south. To the west lies the Adriatic Sea.

Tirana Zoo

Tirana Zoo is a zoo in Tirana, Albania. It was established in 1966. On 14 April, 2006, a meeting of Albanians and Dutch took place in the Netherlands to create an action plan for the zoo for next two years. It is the only zoo in Albania governed by the local government . Animals contained in the zoo include two bears, two lions, six llamas, an eagle, four monkeys, foxes, wolves, and several swans. It is located in Tiranas Green Park. The zoo suffers from a lack of qualified staff, and visitors are not satisfied by the conditions the zoos animals live in. On average, three hundred people visit the zoo every week.

Dajt

Dajt is a former municipality in the Tirana County, central Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became a subdivision of the municipality Tirana. The population at the 2011 census was 20,139. The municipal unit took its name from the Mount Dajt.

Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral of Tirana

The Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral of Tirana, a substitute church for former Orthodox Church of the Holy Evangelist, is an Orthodox church in Tirana, Albania. It was built in 1865 but was closed in 1967. In 2011, a new church was completed on a nearby site . The third largest Orthodox church in Europe, it was officially opened on 24 June 2012 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the consecration of Archbishop Anastasios of Albania.

Mount Dajt

Mount Dajt is a mountain in central Albania, to the east of Tirana. Its highest peak is at 1,613 m . In winter, the mountain is often covered with snow, and it is a popular retreat to the local population of Tirana that rarely sees snow falls. Its slopes have forests of pines, oak and beech. Dajti Mountain was declared a National Park n 1966, and has since 2006 an expanded area of about 29,384 ha. It is under the jurisdiction and administration of Tirana Forest Service Department.

Dajti Castle

Dajti Castle is a 1.12 hectares archaeological site in Albania, comprising the ruins of a Roman fortification and several dwellings. It belongs to late antiquity, probably having been built over Illyrian foundations. It lies at 1,200 metres altitude on top of a hill, west-side of Mount Dajti, close to Tirana. It was discovered in 1963 and eventually was inscribed in the list of the Cultural Monuments of Albania. In 2008 a three year restoration project began, aiming to conduct further archaeological searching and surveys and to improve the nearby infrastructure for visitors and tourists.

Petrelë Castle

Petrelë Castle is a castle in Petrelë, central Albania. Its history dates back to Justinian I. Petrelë Castle is situated at an altitude of 329 metres . The castle of Petrelë has a rich history, containing a tower which was built in the 6th century AD. It is one of the tourist locations close to Tirana that attracts a great number of visitors. The Castle, the prominent wooden structure is a restaurant, is perched on a rocky hill, above the village with the same name. It has a triangular shape with two observation towers. Although it was first built in ancient times, the present building dates back to the 15th century. The Petrela Castle was part of the signaling and defense system of the Kruja Castle. The castles signaled to each other by means of fires. During Skanderbeg’s fight against the Ottomans, the Petrela Castle used to be under the command of Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbegs sister. Today there is a restaurant inside the castle. The castle offers spectacular views of the Erzen valley, the hills, olive groves, and surrounding mountains.

Fortress of Justinian

Fortress of Justinian or simply known as Tirana Castle is a castle in Tirana, Albania. Its history dates back before 1300 and is a remnant from the Byzantine-era. The fortress is the place where the main east-west and north-south roads crossed, and formed the heart of Tirana. About all thats left of the fortress above ground is a 6m-high Ottoman-era wall, covered in vines. The recently uncovered wall foundations were incorporated into the pedestrianised Murat Toptani Street, while a mosaic commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Albanias Independence was unveiled near the Albanian Parliament.

Mother Albania

Mother Albania is a 12 m statue located at the National Martyrs Cemetery of Albania in Albania, dedicated in 1971. The statue figuratively represents the country as a mother guarding over the eternal slumber of those who gave their lives for her. There are 28,000 graves of Albanian partisans in the cemetery, all of whom perished during World War II. The massive statue holds a wreath of laurels and a star. The cemetery was also the resting place of former leader Enver Hoxha, who was subsequently disinterred and given a more humble grave in another public cemetery. The statue is made of concrete and it is a work of the sculptors Kristaq Rama, Muntaz Dhrami and Shaban Hadëri. It stands atop a 3 m pedestal; engraved on the pedestal are the words "Lavdi e perjetshme deshmoreve te Atdheut" .

National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum is a national archaeological museum in Tirana, Albania. Affiliated to Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, the museum houses exhibits from prehistoric and historic times up to Middle Ages. It is also responsible for conducting many archaeological expeditions in the country and is the parent institution of several other museums in the country including the Durrës Archaeological Museum. It has a library of some 7200 volumes.

National Art Gallery of Albania

The National Arts Gallery of Albania has a fund of over 4,000 works of art by Albanian and foreign authors, spanning seven centuries of Albanian cultural heritage. National Gallery of Art is a state institution under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports. It operates in accordance with the Law on Museums and National Cultural Heritage Law of the Republic of Albania. NGA works on the basis of her status which is approved by the Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports, as well as its internal regulations. National Gallery of Art has its beginnings to the efforts of a group of Albanian artists and Arts Committee 1946. Pinakoteka was the first institution of fine arts in Albania. After multiple attempts, on January 11, 1954 it was officially opened to the public Gallery of Arts in Tirana. In 1956, following the acquisition of works of art fund, of creativity and acquisitions boom era, Gallery moved to a more suitable building, three stories in "Fortuzi" and numerous exhibition spaces, as inside and outside. Gallery, worked in two main directions in the line of permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions opening of Albanian and foreign artists. New visions about development and exposure to fine arts and purchases increased number of works of art and brought a demand for more functional building, which was inaugurated on 29 November 1974, on the Boulevard "Martyrs of the Nation" building, where the today. This is the moment of reorganization and restructuring of the first, which consisted in establishing an administrative structure, which consisted of some relevant sectors and in view of artistic activities. New Gallery Fund, up to this time had 340 works and in its archives were 240 registered authors. Since this year the NGA functions as the most important institution and the only national exposure, conservation, research, restoration, education, publishing, documentation and archiving of works of art in Albania. By the Council of Ministers no. 350, dated 10-08-1992, Art Gallery takes its name National Gallery with this motivation: "To better express the purpose and functioning of the body alone, which protects national interests and propagates Albanian fine arts." Since 1949 until today, the National Gallery functions as the only cultural institution of its kind. In 2009 the National Gallery of Art were undertaken significant investments, which consist of a qualitative reconstruction of interior spaces and return to their original project as close to the building, as well as the conception of a new online museum that responds knowledge, education and information to the public artistic domestic and foreign levels much higher.

National Historical Museum

The National Museum of History in Tirana, Albania, is the countrys largest museum. It was opened on 28 October 1981 and is 27,000 square metres in size, while 18,000 square metres are available for expositions. The Museum includes the following pavilions: Pavilion of Antiquity, Pavilion of the Middle Ages, Pavilion of Renaissance, Pavilion of Independence, Pavilion of Iconography, Pavilion of the National Liberation Antifascist War, Pavilion of Communist Terror, and Pavilion of Mother Teresa.

St Paul's Cathedral

St Pauls Cathedral is a cathedral in Tirana, Albania. It belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tiranë-Durrës. The stained glass window to the left of the front door features Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa. It is a modern-looking building, and does not resemble a traditional church.

Prezë Castle

Prezë Castle is a castle in Prezë, western Albania. Preza Castle overlooks the village with the same name and is located on a hilltop. It is a small castle the construction of which started in the 14th century and was completed in the early 15th century and belonged to the Topias, a local feudal family. The castle has been declared a monument of culture. It has four towers, one in each corner. The clock tower was erected around 1800-1850. It is known for its beautiful location, overlooking the Tirana plain. The castle is quite close to the Mother Theresa International Airport. A restaurant and other service facilities are found inside the castle.

Fortress of Bashtovë

Bashtovë Fortress is a fortress near the village of Vilë-Ballaj, today an administrative part of Rrogozhinë, west-central Albania. It is geographically situated near the right banks of Shkumbin River, about 6 km upstream from its outflow into the Adriatic Sea.

Skanderbeg Monument

The Skanderbeg Monument is a monument in Skanderbeg Square, Tirana, Albania. It commemorates Skanderbeg, a 15th century nobleman who is a national hero in Albania for resisting the Ottomans. Created by Odhise Paskali, the 11 metres monument was inaugurated in the 1968 on the 500th anniversary of the death of Skanderbeg.

Kubelie Mosque

Kubelie Mosque is a mosque in Kavajë, Albania. A mosque was originally built here under the Ottomans by Kapllan Beu. The Old Mosque, stood on the main street of the city, about 70m to the east of the current one. Kubelie mosque is described as a "grand, beautiful building, with a dome and a peristyle. Marble facades rise under the cypress trees with their Byzantine columns and their Arabian arches."

Kokonozi Mosque

The Mosque of Mahmud Agha Kokonozi or New Bazaar Mosque is an Ottoman-era mosque built in 1750 and one of the few mosques that survived the communist dictatorship under the Hoxhaist regime. In 1966, the Kokonozi Mosque was closed and transformed into a food storehouse, and later it was used as a tobacco store. The Kokonozi mosque was reopened in February 18, 1991.

Tanners' Mosque

The Tanners Mosque is a mosque located near the Tanners Bridge in Tirana, capital of Albania. Built in the neighborhood of the handicraft-trade Tanners guild around the seventeenth century, it was damaged by a lightning shot but continues to function thanks to improvements made by the family Resmja which even today continues to care for.

Rinia Park

Rinia Park is the central public park of Tirana, Albania, built in 1950 during the socialist system of government, covers an area of 29.81 hectares . Every year on March 14, this park is one of the many venues of the Summer Festival, a national festival celebrating cultural heritage that symbolizes the end of winter and the start of natures freshness. On this occasion circus acrobats and show performers entertain people in the park. After years of degradation, the park was rebuilt in 2000 with a new green area and water feature.

The Tirana Park on the Artificial Lake or the Big Park of Tirana, or even the Park of Saint Procopius, is a 230-hectare public park situated on the southern part of Tirana, Albania. It includes an artificial lake and many other landmarks such as the Saint Procopius Church, the Presidential Palace of Tirana, and memorials to well known Albanian personalities. Tiranas artificial lake and park remains one of the most relaxing places of the capital. Despite increasing buildings being developed near the park, an early-morning run or promenade is a daily routines for many Tirana citizens. To the southern end of the park there is the city zoo and the botanical garden. The latter includes many flowers and plants that are common the Albanian environment.

Citypark Albania

Citypark Albania is a shopping mall in Albania. located along the Durrës – Tirana highway. It is Albanias second-largest shopping centre, with 180 shops, a supermarket, a food court, a hotel, an ice-skating ring, Cartoonland, and other entertainment areas. The shopping center is 12 km away from the centre of Tirana, 8 km from the Kamëz Crossing, and 7.5 km from the Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa. The shopping mall was constructed by AM Group, a local company. The total cost of the investment has been estimated at 80 million euros.

Sacred Heart Church

The Sacred Heart Church is a Roman Catholic church in Tirana, Albania. It was built in 1865 as a gift from the emperor Franz Joseph but was closed in 1967. When it reopened, in 1990, Lonely Planet described the church as having "hilariously garish photo realistic images over a Communist whitewash that have to be seen to be believed".

Ethem Bey Mosque

The Et'hem Bey Mosque is an 18th-century mosque located in the center of the Albanian capital Tirana. Closed under communist rule, the mosque reopened as a house of worship in 1991, without permission from the authorities. 10,000 courageous people dared to attend and remarkably the police did not interfere. You can take a look at the frescoes outside and in the portico which depict trees, waterfalls and bridges - motifs rarely seen in Islamic art.
