Koelnmesse is the name of the international trade fair and exhibition center located in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. With around 75 trade fairs and over 2,000 conferences annually, Koelnmesse is one of the country's largest trade fair organizers and with 284,000 m² exhibition floor area the third largest by area. The Cologne Trade Fair ground was founded in 1922. Until 2005, the trade fair was based in the historic Rheinhallen, and since then moved into new premises next to them. The old Fair Tower Cologne is a landmark building from 1928 and features a tower restaurant on the top floor.

Cologne Zoological Garden

The Aktiengesellschaft Cologne Zoological Garden is the zoo of Cologne, Germany. It features over 7,000 animals of more than 700 species on more than 20 hectares. The internationally renowned zoo with an attached aquarium and invertebrate exhibit has an emphasis on primates such as bonobos and lemurs, and is active in preservational breeding of animals that are in danger of becoming extinct. In addition, in-the-wild conservation efforts and research focussing on animals of Madagascar, Wallacea, and Vietnam are actively promoted and supported via cooperation with Cologne University and local projects, such as in the case of Przewalskis Horses. The zoo was founded in 1860. The world wars led to a phase of stagnation, and the zoo had to close for two years entirely, after virtually being destroyed in World War II. It reopened in 1947; the aquarium was added in 1971. In 1985, the large primate house, one of the main attractions, was opened. Today, the zoo also features a free-flight rainforest hall with free-ranging birds and reptiles opened in 2000, and as the latest addition a large elephant park.

Cologne Cathedral

Cologne Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Cologne, Germany. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne, currently, since his 2014 transfer from Berlin, Rainer Maria Cardinal Woelki, and of the administration of the Archdiocese of Cologne. It is a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and is a World Heritage Site. It is Germanys most visited landmark, attracting an average of 20,000 people a day. Construction of Cologne Cathedral commenced in 1248 and was halted in 1473, leaving it unfinished. Work restarted in the 19th century and was completed, to the original plan, in 1880. It is 144.5 metres long, 86.25 m wide and its towers are approximately 157 m tall. The cathedral is the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and has the second-tallest spires Its two huge spires give it the largest façade of any church in the world. The choir has the largest height to width ratio, 3.6:1, of any medieval church. Colognes medieval builders had planned a grand structure to house the reliquary of the Three Kings and fit its role as a place of worship for the Holy Roman Emperor. Despite having been left incomplete during the medieval period, Cologne Cathedral eventually became unified as "a masterpiece of exceptional intrinsic value" and "a powerful testimony to the strength and persistence of Christian belief in medieval and modern Europe".

Colonius

Colonius is the Cologne telecommunications tower, which was finished in 1981. The Colonius possesses a cafeteria, viewing platform, and a restaurant, apart from antennas for radio relay and radio services within the VHF range. Because of a missing leaseholder, the visitors area including restaurant and viewing platform is currently closed . At the time of its completion the Colonius was 252.9 meters high. In 2004 a radio tower added by helicopter increased the height to 266 meters. This addition allowed the broadcast of digital television from the tower in the Cologne/Bonn region. St. Pantaleon's Church

The Church of St. Pantaleon pronunciation: [ˌtsɪnt panˑˈtʰaˑlɪʲɔn]) is an early Romanesque church in Cologne, Germany. The church dates back to the 10th century and is one the twelve Romanesque churches of Cologne. The former monastery church is consecrated to Saint Pantaleon and the Saints Cosmas and Damian and is the oldest church of the cult of Saint Pantaleon west of Byzantium. The empress Theophanu and the archbishop Bruno the Great are buried in the church, which also contains shrines of saints Alban, the first Christian martyr of Britain, and Maurinus of Cologne. Pope Benedict XVI visited the church in 2005.

Romano-Germanic Museum

The Roman-Germanic Museum is an archaeological museum in Cologne, Germany. It has a large collection of Roman artifacts from the Roman settlement of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, on which modern Cologne is built. The museum protects the original site of a Roman town villa, from which a large Dionysus mosaic remains in its original place in the basement, and the related Roman Road just outside. In this respect the museum is an archaeological site. The museum also has the task of preserving the Roman cultural heritage of Cologne, and therefore houses an extensive collection of Roman glass from funerals and burials and also exercises archaeological supervision over the construction of the Cologne underground. Most of the museums collection was housed at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne until 1946. In the front of the museum the former northern town gate of Cologne with the inscription CCAA is on display in the building.

Käthe Kollwitz Museum

The Käthe Kollwitz Museum in Cologne owns one of the largest collections of works by the German artist Käthe Kollwitz . It opened on 22 April 1985, the 40th anniversary of Kollwitzs death. The basis of the collection, consisting of 60 graphical works along with all 15 of the artists bronze sculptures, was acquired by the Kreissparkasse Köln from Kollwitzs granddaughters in 1983. These works had previously been under the care of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne and the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart. The museum is located above a shopping gallery at Colognes Neumarkt. It now owns over 750 works by Kollwitz, and has received over 500,000 visitors since its founding.

Fragrance Museum

The Farina Fragrance Museum is situated across from Cologne City Hall, and near the famous Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in the Obenmarspforten in Innenstadt, Cologne. Founded in 1709, John Maria Farina opposite the Jülichs Place is the eldest fragrance factory still standing and houses the registered office since 1723. Over several floors, the museum provides a very detailed insight into the production methods of perfume throughout the various stages. The focus is primarily laid on Eau de Cologne, and one will therefore discover some particular technical devices such as distillation apparatus which were once used. In addition to the equipment, one will also be able to witness the evolution thanks to various pictures and documents which help trace back history. Moreover, as copyright didn’t exist in those days, a great deal of imitations and forgeries of Eau de Cologne rapidly appeared on the market and a certain number of them are also presented in the museum. Further details as to the changes in the manufacturing of Farina Eau de Cologne are also on display. On 25 November 2006, in commemoration of John Maria Farina’s 240th death anniversary, the Farina House was elected “place to be” within the context of the project “Germany Land to be”.

Imhoff-Schokoladenmuseum

The Imhoff-Schokoladenmuseum was opened by Hans Imhoff on 31 October 1993. It is situated in the Cologne quarter of Altstadt-Süd on the Rheinauhafen peninsula. The exhibits show the entire history of chocolate, from its beginnings with the Olmecs, Maya and Aztecs to contemporary products and production methods. With 5,000 guided tours and 675,000 visitors a year, the museum is in the Top Ten of German museums. The museum is entirely self-supporting, receiving no subsidy. It has its own marketing department and is used by the Schokoladenmuseum Gastronomie GmbH for events.

EL-DE Haus

EL-DE Haus, officially the NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne, located in Cologne, is the former headquarters of the Gestapo and now a museum documenting the Third Reich. The building was at first the business premises of jeweller Leopold Dahmen, and the building takes its name from his initials. In 1934, the Nazis rented the building from him and turned it into the headquarters of the secret police, the Gestapo. Surprisingly, the building survived the Allied bombing of Cologne during World War II, while 90% of the city was destroyed. After the bombings, the basements of the building, which had been used as prison cells and torture rooms for forced labourers and political enemies, were used to store wartime files and paperwork. Inscriptions made on the walls of the prison cells by inmates can still be viewed today. The building was the site of many executions, as well as deaths due to overcrowding and poor hygienic conditions. In 2006, the Documentation Centre on National Socialism was awarded the Best in Heritage award, which is given to select museums. The only other German museum to have won the prize is the Buddenbrook Museum in Lübeck.

Schnütgen Museum

The Schnütgen Museum in Cologne, Germany is devoted to Christian religious art, mainly medieval, but some parts of the collection, such as its textiles and prints, extend from antiquity to the modern period. In 1906, the collection of Alexander Schnütgen was donated to the city, and the collection has continued to expand, so that until the opening of a new building in 2010, only about 10% of its 13,000 items could be displayed. Now some 2,000 objects are on display in 1900 sq. metres of gallery space, with an additional 1300 sq. metres for special exhibitions. Schnütgen was a Catholic priest and theologian; according to the museum website "Up to now people tell stories about his zealous and sometimes crafty collection tactics". Since 1956, the museum has occupied the large Romanesque church of St. Cäcilien, founded in 881 for noble canonesses, with the present building dating from 1130–60, with murals from about 1300. An annex built by architect Karl Band was added in the 1950s, and new buildings opened in 2010. Highlights of the collection include a Romanesque tympanum from St Cecilias itself, several large wooden crucifixes, including the 11th century Cross of St Georges, as well as a large collection of early bronze ones, including the only other work generally attributed to Rainer of Huy apart from his Liège baptismal font. The museum has a late Carolingian evangeliary of 860–880, and a single leaf from the English St Albans Psalter. The "Comb of St Heribert" is a 9th-century ivory liturgical comb, and the "Harrach Diptych" a Carolingian ivory of about 810 . Ivories, stained glass, textiles including vestments, metalwork and paintings are all well represented. Alexander Schnütgen had organised influential exhibitions of his collection while it was still private, and from the 1970s the museum organized a series of landmark exhibitions of medieval art: Rhein und Maas Monumenta Annonis – Köln und Siegburg. Weltbild und Kunst im hohen Mittelalter Die Parler und der schöne Stil 1350–1400, Europäische Kunst unter den Luxemburgern Ornamenta Ecclesia – Kunst und Künstler der Romanik Himmelslicht. Catalogues of the permanent collection of the museum are being published in several volumes. A touring exhibition in America of objects from the museum in 2000 also produced a catalogue in English.

Museum Ludwig

Museum Ludwig, located in Cologne, Germany, houses a collection of modern art. It includes works from Pop Art, Abstract and Surrealism, and has one of the largest Picasso collections in Europe. It also features many works by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Since November 2012 the museums director has been Philipp Kaiser.

Flora und Botanischer Garten Köln

The Flora und Botanischer Garten Köln is a municipal formal park and botanical garden located adjacent to Cologne Zoological Garden at Amsterdamer Straße 34, Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is open daily without charge. The garden dates to 1863 when a private joint-stock company was organized to create Flora park as a replacement for the citys older botanical garden near the Cologne Cathedral, which in 1857 was destroyed for construction of the central railway station. This new park was designed by Peter Joseph Lenné in 1864 in a mixed German style, incorporating French Baroque, Italian Renaissance, and English landscape garden elements. In its center is a glass palace structure of cast iron and glass patterned upon the Crystal Palace and Jardin dhiver, which served as an exhibition site through the late 19th century, including horticultural exhibitions in 1875 and 1888, and an industrial exhibition in 1889. Frauen-Rosenhof, an art nouveau garden, was added in 1906. Between 1912-1914, as it suffered financial problems, the garden was acquired by the city, which in 1914 built an adjacent botanical garden . These two gardens were united in 1920, with new glasshouses and exhibition houses for exotic and tropical plants added in the 1950s. Flora park was restored in 1987, and today contains an Italian Renaissance garden with hornbeam pergolas, cascade, and the Flora Temple, surrounded by gardens in the English landscape style, as well as a heather garden, fern garden, fragrance garden, Mediterranean garden, and pond. It also contains a number of notable trees, some dating to the gardens establishment; more than 60 specimens have been designated natural monuments. The botanical garden cultivates nearly 10,000 types of plants, including approximately 2000 species in its alpine garden. It also contains good collections of magnolias, rhododendrons, coniferous trees, maples, and Hamamelidaceae, as well as a medicinal plant garden and farmers garden of local crops. About 5,000 species are presented in four exhibition greenhouses: Main greenhouse tropical rainforest plants. Small tropical house tropical crops including bamboo, cinnamon, cocoa, coconut palm, coffee, pineapple, sugar cane, and vanilla, plus water and marsh plants including rice, taro, lotus, and water lilies. Subtropical house subtropical plants from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia, including camellias, proteas, and tree ferns. Cactus house cacti and succulents from the worlds deserts and semi-deserts.

Forstbotanischer Garten Köln

The Forstbotanischer Garten Köln is an arboretum and woodland botanical garden located at Schillingsrotterstraße 100, Rodenkirchen, Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It forms part of the citys outer green belt and is open daily without charge. The garden was created between 1962-1964 on a former military site which was, until the end of World War I, a part of the Äußerer Festungsring Köln, the outer ring of fortresses surrounding Cologne. Its ruins have been integrated into the plantings as a rock garden. In the 1980s, an adjoining natural area was created as the Friedenswald with additional tree plantings. Today the garden contains exotic and native trees. Of particular interest are the Rhododendron ravine, heather garden, peonies, Japanese plantings, and North American plantings . The Friedenswald contains a large meadow surrounded by deciduous and coniferous forests containing trees and shrubs from all nations with which Germany has diplomatic relations; tropical and subtropical species are represented by symbolic trees.

Deutz Suspension Bridge

The Deutz Suspension Bridge was a self-anchored suspension bridge using eyebar chains, across the Rhine at Deutz in Cologne, Germany. It was built from 1913 to 1915. In 1935, it was named Hindenburg Bridge after Germanys second President deceased the previous year. It collapsed on 28 February 1945 during repair works and was replaced in 1948 by the worlds first steel box girder bridge designed by Fritz Leonhardt and Gerd Lohmer. H. D. Robinson, who later worked with David B. Steinman on the Florianopolis Bridge, another eyebar chain bridge, consulted on the towers for the design of this Cologne bridge. It reportedly later served as inspiration for American bridge engineers and was specifically cited as a design influence on the Three Sisters bridges in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as well as for the Kiyosu Bridge on the Sumida River in Tokyo.

Mülheim Bridge

The Mülheim Bridge in Cologne is a suspension bridge on the river Rhine in Western Germany. It has a main span of 315 metres. The bridge was originally completed in 1929. On October 14-15, 1944, an American bomb struck the chamber containing the demolition charges destroying the bridge. The bridge was rebuilt between 1949 and 1951. It connects the city district Riehl on the west side of the river with Mülheim on the east side, after which the bridge is named.

Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium

Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium was the Roman colony in the Rhineland from which the German city of Cologne developed. It was the capital of the Roman province of Germania Inferior and the headquarters of the military in the region. With the administrative reforms under Diocletian, it became the capital of Germania Secunda. Many artifacts from the ancient city survive including the arch of the former city gate with the inscription CCAA, which is today housed in the Romano-Germanic Museum.

Cologne-Weidenpesch Racecourse

The Cologne-Weidenpesch Racecourse is a horse racing track at Weidenpescher Park in Nippes, Cologne. As the only race course in Germany hosting more than one European pattern Group 1 race, Weidenpesch is one of the most prominent tracks in the country. Cologne-Weidenpesch is also one of Germany's oldest horse-racing tracks, having been established as a race course in 1897. The larger of the two grandstands was designed as a cast iron and timber framing structure in 1898 and substantially renovated in 2004. Until recently, the sportsgrounds were also home to Cologne's oldest football club, the VfL Köln 99.

Rheinauhafen

The Rheinauhafen is a 15.4 hectares urban regeneration project in Cologne, Germany, located along the River Rhine between the Südbrücke and Severinsbrücke , just south of the inner city's historic old town. The project is set around the actual Rheinauhafen, a formerly commercial harbour developed during the 1880s, and spans 2 kilometres in the north-south direction and 200 metres east-west at its widest. Planning for the redevelopment project commenced with an urban design competition during the early 1990s, with construction starting in 2002 and scheduled to be completed by 2011. The project comprises some 15.4 hectares of waterfront land mainly used for offices, cultural institutions, hotels and dwellings. The formerly commercial port is now being used as a marina. Architectural landmarks are the former Siebengebirge wharf warehouses and the three Kranhaus buildings (from south to north "KranhausPLUS", "Kranhaus1" and "Pandion Vista"), allegorizing the historical harbour cranes. The middle one was awarded the MIPIM Award in Cannes on March 12, 2009 in the category of Best Business Centre. The new Rheinauhafen is home to numerous companies of the creative industry; among the larger companies and law firms are Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (in "KranhausPLUS"), CMS Hasche Sigle (in "Kranhaus1"), Electronic Arts and Microsoft (own building); among the cultural organisations are the Kap am Südkai, German Sport & Olympia Museum and Imhoff-Schokoladenmuseum.

RTHC Bayer Leverkusen

Ruder Tennis Hockey Club Bayer Leverkusen is a German rowing, field hockey and tennis club, one of the projects supported by Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Bayer AG and with 2500 members is one of the largest sports clubs in Leverkusen. To take care of the number of athletes are 18 full-time employees and 20 coaches and trainers. The sports facilities of RTHC Bayer Leverkusen are at three locations. The quarters of the rowing department is located on the Rhine in Köln-Stammheim, at Stammheim Castle Park on Fühlinger lake. The central sports and administrative center of the RTHC is on the Kurtekotten dar. Around the clubhouse are 26 outdoor tennis courts, a tennis wall, two tennis courts with a total of seven courts and a multipurpose hall with a gym. For the sport of hockey there are two artificial and natural turf fields and a hall. The RTHC was created in 1951 by the merger of three formerly independent organizations: the rowing club founded in 1910, the tennis clubs of 1913 and the hockey club in 1919. As of April 2012, among the outstanding successes include two Olympic medals (Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996), seven Olympic silver medals, one bronze and seven world championship titles. The most successful rower is Stephan Volkert. The multiple Paralympic swimming champion, Dr. Britta Siegers rose to success with wheelchair tennis and occupied as a personal best in the world ranking in singles and eight position seven in doubles.

While the nave and crossing tower are Romanesque, the choir has been rebuilt in the Gothic style.

St. Maria im Kapitol

St. Maria im Kapitol is an 11th-century Romanesque church located in the Kapitol-Viertel in the old town of Cologne, Germany. The Roman Catholic church is based on the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, was dedicated to St. Mary and built between 1040 and 1065. It is one of twelve Romanesque churches built in Cologne during this period. Measuring 100 m x 40 m and encompassing 4,000 square metres of internal space, St. Maria is the largest of the Romanesque churches in Cologne. Like many of the latter, it has an east end which is trefoil in shape, with three apses. It has a nave and aisles and three towers to the west. It is considered the most important work of German church architecture of the Salian dynasty.

The former collegiate church is dedicated to the twelve Apostles. It is one of the twelve Romanesque churches built in Cologne in that period. The church has a basilical plan of nave and aisles, and like Groß St. Martin and St. Maria im Kapitol, has three apses at the east end making a trefoil plan. There is a single tower of 67 metres at the west.

St. Cecilia's Church

St. Cecilias Church pronunciation: is one of the twelve Romanesque churches in Cologne’s old city, maintained by the Foundation of Romanesque Churches in Cologne. The present building, little changed since its inception, dates from 1130-60. Since 1956, the church has been the home of the Schnütgen Museum for medieval art.
