Bridgend

Bridgend , is a town in Bridgend County Borough in Wales, 18-mile west of the capital Cardiff and 20-mile east of Swansea. The river crossed by the original bridge, which gave the town its name, is the River Ogmore, but the River Ewenny also passes to the south of the town. Historically a part of Glamorgan, Bridgend has greatly expanded in size since the early 1980s the 2001 census recorded a population of 39,429 for the town and the 2011 census reports that the Bridgend Local Authority had a population of 139,200 up from 128,700 in 2001. This 8.2% rise was the largest rise in Wales except for Cardiff. The town is undergoing a redevelopment project, with the town centre mainly pedestrianised and ongoing works including Brackla Street Centre redevelopment to Bridgend Shopping Centre, Rhiw Car Park redevelopment, ongoing public realm improvements and the upgrade of the Bridgend Life Centre and demolition of Sunnyside offices to accommodate a large retirement complex.

Porthcawl

Porthcawl is a town and community on the south coast of Wales in the county borough of Bridgend, 25 miles west of the capital city, Cardiff and 19 miles southeast of Swansea. Situated on a low limestone headland on the South Wales coast, overlooking the Bristol Channel, Porthcawl developed as a coal port during the 19th century, but its trade was soon taken over by more rapidly developing ports such as Barry. Northwest of the town, in the dunes known as Kenfig Burrows, are hidden the last remnants of the town and Kenfig Castle, which were overwhelmed by sand about 1400.

Coity

Coity is a village in Bridgend County Borough, south Wales. Coity is part of the community of Coity Higher and is notable for being home to Coity Castle, one of the best preserved castles in Glamorgan. Other buildings of note in the village include St Mary, a 14th-century church, and Ty Mawr, a fine 16th-century house.

Coney Beach Pleasure Park

Coney Beach Pleasure Park is a small amusement park in Porthcawl, Mid Glamorgan in Wales, in operation since 1920. Throughout its history, the parks period of operation is from end of February of each year up until the 5th of November . Originally built to entertain American troops returning from World War I the park was named as a tribute to the famous New York amusement park on Coney Island.

Tondu

Tondu is a village in Bridgend County Borough, Wales, located about 3 miles north of the town of Bridgend. Tondu lies on the A4063 from Bridgend to Maesteg, and was established in the late 18th century as a coal mining village servicing the Parc Slip Colliery. In later years, an iron works was also established, and in the 19th century, a brick works was constructed using the clay from the carboniferous coal measures to make a variety of bricks, mostly for engineering. The brick works was demolished in 1977. The association with the coal industry was also reflected in the large area office of the National Coal Board in the village and a centre for the Mines Rescue Service.

Maesteg

Maesteg is a town and community in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. Maesteg lies at the northernmost end of the Llynfi Valley, close to the border with Neath Port Talbot. In 2011, Maesteg had a population of 20,612. Historically a part of Glamorgan, the growth of the town started with the opening of ironworks in the 1820s and 1830s. Once a coal mining area, the last pit closed in 1985. With the decline of the coal industry and, more recently, the closure of one large factory producing cosmetics and another manufacturing vehicle components, the valley has become a residential/dormitory area for the Port Talbot, Bridgend and Cardiff journey to work areas. 11% of the town's population speak Welsh with 27.9% of 3-15 year olds speaking the language.

Newcastle Castle

Newcastle Castle is a medieval castle located on Newcastle Hill, overlooking the town centre of Bridgend in Glamorgan, South Wales. It was originally believed to date from 1106 when a ringwork was created at the site by the Norman baron Robert Fitzhamon. Today it is ruinous.

Coity Castle

Coity Castle in Glamorgan, Wales is a Norman castle built by Sir Payn "the Demon" de Turberville, one of the legendary Twelve Knights of Glamorgan supposed to have conquered Glamorgan under the leadership of Robert FitzHamon, Lord of Gloucester. Now in ruins, it stands in the Community of Coity Higher near the town of Bridgend, in the County Borough of Bridgend. Very close to the castle is the battlemented parish church of St Mary the Virgin, dating from the 14th century. It is a Grade I listed building.

Ogmore Castle

Ogmore Castle is a Grade I listed castle ruin located near the village of Ogmore-by-Sea, south of the town of Bridgend in Glamorgan, South Wales. It is situated on the south bank of the River Ewenny and the east bank of the River Ogmore. Its construction might have begun in 1106. Ogmore was one of three castles built in the area in the early 12th century, the others being Coity Castle and Newcastle Castle. It was in use until the 19th century for a range of purposes, including a court of justice and a prison, but is now a substantial set of remains and a local landmark. It is managed by local authorities.

Candleston Castle

Candleston Castle is a 14th-century fortified manor house, in ruins since the 19th century. It is .75 miles southwest of Merthyr Mawr, former Glamorgan, Wales, now Bridgend county borough and just .75 miles northwest of Ogmore Castle, separated by the River Ogmore. Candlestons original long and narrow rectangular structure lay across the western end of a low narrow promontory, suggesting a defensive position. The castle is believed to be named after the Norman family of Cantilupe, thought to be its first feudal tenants.

Kenfig Castle

Kenfig Castle is a ruined castle in Bridgend County Borough in Wales that came to prominence after the Anglo-Norman invasion of Wales in the late eleventh century. An early reference to a castle at Kenfig can be found in 1080, when Iestyn ap Gwrgan was said to have refortified it, but probably this was a different structure to that raised alongside the town that developed there in the mid-twelfth century. The castle was sacked by the Welsh on at least six occasions, in 1167, 1183, 1232, 1242, 1294-5, by Morgan ap Maredudd during the revolt of Madog ap Llywelyn, and again in 1316 during the revolt of Llywelyn Bren. By the late fifteenth century both Kenfig old town and the castle had been abandoned because of encroaching sand dunes. John Leland wrote in about 1539, "There is a little village on the est side of Kenfik, and a castel, booth in ruine and almost shokid and devourid with the sandes that the Severn Se ther castiith up". In the 1920s and early 1930s much of the sand was excavated as an Archaeological dig. The sands re-invaded and only the top of the keep is now visible.

Ewenny Priory

Ewenny Priory, in Ewenny in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, was a monastery of the Benedictine order, founded in the 12th century. The priory was unusual in having military-style defences and is widely regarded as one of the finest fortified religious buildings in Britain. Over the centuries the priory has sustained some damage, and following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, was, like many of its kind, converted into a private house, which is still inhabited by its current owners, the Turbervill family. The priory is not open to the public apart from the church, where restoration work has recently been carried out by Cadw. The nave serves as the parish church .

Sker House

Sker House is a historical building in Wales. Originally built as a monastic grange of the Cistercian order over 900 years ago, it is situated just outside of the village of Kenfig, near Bridgend. The house later became a residential property and has been involved in many of the disputes that the area has experienced. Many of the areas prominent historical figures have been residents. Its residential form appears to have been determined by the preceding monastic grange, of which little remains. The house was made famous as the basis of R. D. Blackmores book The Maid of Sker. Once known for being a grey, gaunt, and romantic building, it fell into dereliction during the 19th century. After many years of abandonment, it was finally declared as unsafe in 1979. Beginning on 31 March 1999, the building underwent a significant restoration. The project ended in July 2003. The houses troubled history continued when the contractors for the restoration ran into massive overspending and went into receivership at the end of 1999. In 2003, the house was sold to Niall Ferguson. It now stands whitewashed in yellow against the backdrop of the barren sands of Kenfig Burrows and the sea. It is a Grade I listed building.

Southerndown Golf Club

Southerndown Golf Club is a downland/links golf club in the Vale of Glamorgan, in south-east Wales, near the coast and Ogmore-by-Sea and Southerndown, in close proximity to Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes. The course lies in an open, elevated position above the Ogmore River valley and in 2001 was 6,417 yards. The course was established in 1905 and designed by Willie Fernie. Players such as Peter McEvoy, Gary Wolstenholme, Stephen Dodd, Bradley Dredge, Kitty Crake, and Gene Sarazen have all played at Southerndown. The club has held the Piccadilly Medal in 1970-71 and the Martini International and also hosts the Welsh Amateur Golf event. The website www.top100golfcourses.co.uk ranks Southerndown as the 13th best golf course in Wales.

Bryngarw Country Park

Bryngarw Country Park is made up of 48 hectares and is situated on the west bank of the Afon Garw, at the mouth of the Garw Valley in the Bridgend County Borough, Wales. The western boundary is marked by the Brynmenyn-Bettws road and the River Garw is its eastern boundary. 18 hectares of open meadowlands, which are the subject of grazing tenancy agreements and hence not open to the public, surrounds the Country Park. The Country Park and Bryngarw House occupies the remaining 30 hectares of the estate. Bryngarw House and its associated formal gardens account for 1.5 hectares of the park. The rest of the park is predominantly wooded with areas of meadow, wetland and freshwater, formal garden and areas for amenity use. Bryngarw Country Parks mission statement is “Through the provision and maintenance of a mosaic of habitats, rich natural environments and historic formal gardens, with targeted access and interpretation; to provide a ‘Bridge’ for visitors, linking people and nature, past and present, urban and countryside, heritage and natural history And so to give access to the full range of physical, mental and social health benefits which that connection brings.” The park appears to be achieving this as it currently receives between 50,000 and 70,000 visitors per year; with visits made by local schools for educational and interpretative sessions run by the ranger team contributing between 1,500 and 2,000 children a year.” In addition to school visits, the ranger team provide a range of other interpretive events aimed at the general public. In 2010, the park won its first Green Flag award for providing outstanding levels of conservation, preservation, sustainability and provision of public amenities and services. The park has again been deemed worthy of this prestigious award in 2011. Bryngarw Park is a Grade II listed Historic Park and Garden with the house being a Grade II listed building and lies within the Strategic Coalfield Plateau, Landscape Conservation Area, described in local legislation . This designation refers to the wooded, gently sloping agricultural and parkland landscape that characterises the park. In 2010, the park was designated as a Key Strategic Site under the Valleys Partnership Initiative Action Programme and is subsequently receiving funding from the Wales Assembly Government Environmental Improvement Grant and Bridgend County Borough Councils Strategic Regeneration Fund. The park has also been awarded grant money from ‘One Historic Garden’ Centre of Excellence Scheme and has been designated one of eight ‘Visit Wales Sustainable Tourism, Historic Gardens Centre of Excellence’ sites. This money from both funds will be used in autumn of 2011 to update and expand the existing visitor centre, refurbish the café and toilets, improve the existing car park and to significantly enhance the oriental gardens

St John the Baptist Church

St John the Baptist Church, Porthcawl is a medieval church and Grade I listed building in Church Street, Newton, Porthcawl, Wales. St John the Baptist's Church was built probably in the 1180s and is mentioned in 1189. It was founded by the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem 800 years ago and originally built as a fortress. It was largely rebuilt in the 15th or early 16th centuries, although it retains some of the original building. It was restored extensively in 1860-61 and a meeting room and vestry were added in 1993. The church has a large west tower, a nave with south porch and chancel. The west face has an ornate doorway, with a large perpendicular window above. Some original wall paintings remain including a bust of the patron saint. A well is located 130m to the south of the church.

Old Bridge

The Old Bridge is a medieval two arched stone footbridge that spans the River Ogmore at Bridgend in Wales. It is not known who designed or built the bridge, however it was built in approximately 1425. The bridge was repaired in 1775 and restored both in 2005 and 2011. The bridge is a scheduled ancient monument and a grade II* listed bridge.

St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church is a Grade I listed church in Coity Higher, Bridgend County Borough, southern Wales. The church is dated mainly to the 14th century, though significant alterations were added in the 16th century. The tower dates to the latter period. The church was extensively renovated by J. Pritchard and J.P. Seddon in 1860. The eastern stained class windows were added by Morris & Co. P.S. Webb was responsible for the patterns while the figures are the work of P.P. Marshall. Among the depictions on these windows are Christ saving Peter from drowning in the sea, Christ miraculously curing a woman, and Thomas the Doubter. The octagonal font dates to the 19th century, while the pulpit was installed in 1942. St Mary's Church became a Grade I listed building on 26 July 1963.

St James's Church

St James's Church is a Grade I listed church in Pyle, Bridgend County Borough, southern Wales. A church was present in the area during the Norman period, but due to sand invasion by the later 14th century a new church had to be built, using some of the earlier materials. The date 1471, displayed on the roof indicates that the churches was rebuilt at that time. In 1877 the church was extensively renovated, and further restored by F W Waller in 1891, when the chancel was given a new roof and the church was fitted with a new organ chamber. St James's Church became a Grade I listed building on 26 July 1963.

Royal Porthcawl Golf Club

Royal Porthcawl Golf Club is a golf club in Wales in the United Kingdom, located north of Porthcawl and bordering the Bristol Channel. The club has hosted many prestigious tournaments including The Amateur Championship on six occasions, the Walker Cup in 1995, the Curtis Cup in 1964, the British Masters in 1961, and European Tour event, the Welsh Golf Classic in the early 1980s. In March 2010 it hosted the University Golf Match, contested between Oxford and Cambridge universities, with Oxford winning 9-6 over Cambridge. It hosted the 2014 Senior Open Championship and will return there in 2017.

Garw Valley Railway

The Bridgend Valleys Railway is a standard gauge heritage railway located in South Wales. It is hoped that, in the near future, there will be brakevan rides between Pontycymer and Pant-y-Gog, a distance of about half-a-mile. The line was formerly used for freight and passenger services, and most of the track is still in place between Brynmenyn and Pontycymer.

Ton Kenfig

Kenfig is a village and former borough in Bridgend, Wales. It is situated 1 mile inland on the north bank of the Bristol Channel, and just south-west of the M4 motorway. To the east is the town of Bridgend, at approximately 6 miles , and the capital city of Cardiff, at 24 miles .

Portobello House

Portobello House is a building on the bank of the River Ogmore, about half a mile up from the sea, near the estuary at Ogmore-by-Sea, western Vale of Glamorgan, southeast Wales, on the country border with Bridgend County Borough. It is accessed off the B4524 road. It was used to describe the location of several geological features in 1933. It was formerly the Portobello Hotel and served also as a social club. During some period was run by the Prosser family. A community history reports that "At one time, it was only possible to buy drinks on a Sunday throughout Wales if you could prove to the innkeeper that you had travelled three miles or more". And the Portobello Hotel served well as a post-practice social gathering place for shooters at the Glamorgan Artillery, as it was conveniently "the required distance". Also walkers in the countryside seeking to cross the River Ogmore would not be able to cross if the tide was in, and a Mr. Prosser from the Portobello could be relied upon to ferry across the river in "his little flat-bottomed home-made boat for a small fee." The Portobello House has been owned for decades by Dawn Clarenda Mary Llewellyn, a former medical professional. Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes lie across the river from the house and Southerndown Golf Club lies to the southeast.

Grand Pavilion

The Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl, Bridgend County Borough, Wales, was opened in 1932. It is well known for its octagonal dome and striking frontage. Originally intended as a Palm Court for hosting Tea Dances, Balls and Civic functions, the Pavilion is a very versatile venue. Construction of the Grand Pavilion commenced in the summer of 1931. The use of ferrocrete throughout meant that the construction was relatively quick and was complete by August 1932. At the time, the use of ferrocrete was a relatively new technology and remarkably 75 years on, it has stood the test of time. The Grand Pavilion hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year including live theatre, concerts, ballroom dancing, conferences, dances, and culminating in the ever-popular Christmas pantomime. Recently, names such as Rob Brydon, Eddie Izzard, Elkie Brooks, Cerys Matthews, Hayley Westenra, Katherine Jenkins, Suzi Quatro, Ralph McTell, Joe Pasquale, and Gerry The Pacemakers have all appeared on the Pavilions stage. In 1957 a US Government travel ban prevented Paul Robeson from appearing in person at the Miners Eisteddfod, however he still performed live via a secretly arranged transatlantic telephone link up. 50 years on, in 2007, the Grand Pavilion celebrated this important event with a very special concert featuring Sir Willard White. The Grand Pavilion is also a versatile and unique conference venue, hosting many corporate and charity conferences and meetings throughout the year. It is also a popular venue for civil wedding ceremonies, receptions and parties. The main hall features a fully equipped stage, which is host to many professional and amateur performances throughout the year. The main hall has a theatre seating capacity of 643. The hall also boasts one of the finest sprung dance floors anywhere in South Wales. The octagonal floor ensures plenty of space for dancing, and is regularly used for ballroom dancing classes, as well as sell out tea dances. Originally named the "lesser hall" the basement of the Pavilion houses a recently refurbished performance space now named "The Stage Door". The Stage Door plays host to regular Comedy nights, folk and jazz nights, dance classes, theatre workshops, conferences and meetings. Patrons to The Grand Pavilions sea front Cafe Bar enjoy panoramic south facing views across the Bristol Channel. On a clear day, Devon, England, is clearly visible. The Cafe Bar hosts its own series of events, such as Jazz, Chill-out sessions, Literary speaking and an Art Forum. Several metres to the west is the Seabank Hotel.

Court Colman Manor

Court Colman Manor is a historic Tudor mansion in Pen Y Fai, Bridgend, South Wales. The property belonged to Margam Abbey until the Dissolution, after which it passed through several hands. Now a late Georgian style house, probably built in the second quarter of the 19th Century, enlarged in 1907 with later additions. For most of its history, it has been the home for a succession of people who have guarded their privacy well.

The community occupies the area west of the Ewenny River, between Bridgend and Porthcawl. It takes in the settlement of Tythegston and a stretch of coastal sand dunes known as Merthyr Mawr Warren.

Bridgend railway station

Bridgend railway station is a mainline railway station, serving the town of Bridgend, South Wales. It is located approximately halfway between Cardiff Central and Swansea at the point where the Maesteg Line diverges from the South Wales Main Line, and is the western terminus of the Vale of Glamorgan Line from Cardiff via Barry and Llantwit Major. It is the fifth busiest station in Wales, after Cardiff Central, Cardiff Queen Street, Newport and Swansea.
