Abuyog

Abuyog is a first class municipality in the province of Leyte, Philippines, facing Leyte Gulf out into the Pacific Ocean. It is the largest town of the island of Leyte in terms of land area. It is bordered to the north by Javier, to the east by Mahaplag and Baybay City and to the south by Silago in Southern Leyte. Abuyog got its name when Spanish sailors came ashore in an early settlement at the mouth of the Abuyog River to replenish their supplies. Swarms of bees were all over the shore. The Spaniards asked the natives "Como si y llama el pueblo?", not knowing that the Spaniards asked for the town's name, the natives answered "Buyog". Repeating after the natives, the sailors muttered, "Ah! Buyog". Eventually the town came to be known as "Abuyog" to which some Spanish chroniclers often used in reference to the whole island of Leyte. But Abuyog in the early annals, though grown prosperous, remained obscure because of the absence of a powerful chieftain. It was Datu Bangcao who had is seat of government in Carigara, who ruled Abuyog. People mostly from Samar migrated to Abuyog because of the many opportunities the immigrants got from its rich soil. The language of this town which acquired the name "melting pot" became Waray-Waray language from the Samar immigrants.

Ormoc City

Ormoc is a city in the province of Leyte, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 191,200 people. Ormoc is the economic, cultural, commercial and transportation hub of western Leyte. Ormoc City is an independent component city, not subject to regulation from the Provincial Government of Leyte. However, the city is part of the IV Congressional District of Leyte together with Albuera, Kanaga, Merida, Palompon and Isabel. On November 8, 2013, the city was largely destroyed by Super Typhoon Yolanda , having previously suffered severe destruction and loss of life in 1991 from torrential flooding during Tropical Storm Thelma. The city's name is derived from ogmok, an old Visayan term for "lowland" or "depressed plain".

Guiuan Church

The Immaculate Conception Parish Church commonly known as Guiuan Church, is a Roman Catholic church in the municipality of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, Philippines, within the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Borongan. The church is classified as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. It was formerly nominated to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Philippines under two categories, the Baroque Churches of the Philippines and the Jesuit Churches of the Philippines. It was totally destroyed when Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in Guiuan and struck other parts of Central Visayas on November 8, 2013.

Palo Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lord's Transfiguration, also known as Palo Metropolitan Cathedral or simply Palo Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church located at Palo, Leyte in the Philippines belonging to the Vicariate of Palo under the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Palo. It was established by the Jesuits in 1596 and was later on administered by the Augustinians in 1768 and then by the Franciscans in 1843. In November 2013, the cathedral was damaged by Typhoon Haiyan. After the church's rehabilitation, Pope Francis briefly visited the cathedral in January 2015. In 2015, it was declared as one of the pilgrim churches of the archdiocese by Archbishop John F. Du.

Maasin Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Maasin , commonly known as the Maasin Cathedral is a baroque Roman Catholic church in Maasin, Southern Leyte, Philippines. The church is home to one of the oldest parishes of the country, the Maasin parish established by the series of waves of missionaries namely the Jesuits, Augustinians and finally, Franciscans. Originally built in 1700 by Jesuit priests, the church suffered several destruction and damage over the years, but has been rebuilt many times by the orders succeeding the Jesuits. Its present-day structure is constructed at 1968 and subsequently became the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maasin which covers the municipalities of Southern Leyte, including the towns of Matalom, Bato, Hilongos, Hindang, Inopacan and Baybay of province of Leyte.

MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park

The MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park is a protected area of the Philippines that commemorates the historic landing of General Douglas MacArthur in Leyte Gulf at the start of the campaign to recapture and liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation on 20 October 1944. This event led to the largest naval battle of World War II and Japans eventual defeat and surrender after almost three years. The war memorial is located in the municipality of Palo on Leyte island in Eastern Visayas and is one of the regions major tourist attractions. It was declared a national park on 12 July 1977 through Letter of Instructions No. 572 signed by President Ferdinand Marcos.

Kuapnit Balinsasayao National Park

Kuapnit Balinsasayao National Park is a protected area of the Philippines located in the municipalities of Abuyog and Baybay on Leyte island of Eastern Visayas. The park covers an area of 364 hectares deep within the mountainous forests of Leyte Island some 60 kilometers south of Tacloban via the Maharlika Highway. It was declared a national park in 1937 by virtue of Proclamation No. 142.

Tacloban City Convention Center

The Tacloban City Convention Center, also known as the Tacloban Astrodome, is an indoor arena located in Tacloban City, Philippines. It has a maximum seating capacity of 5,000 for basketball and 4,500 for concerts. It was built at a cost of 200 million pesos in 2006 and is used primarily for basketball, concerts, regional events and other conventions. It is the biggest indoor arena in Eastern Visayas region.

Baybay

Baybay is a fourth income class component city located on the western coast of the province of Leyte, Philippines. It is bounded by Camotes Sea to the west, Albuera to the north, Inopacan to the south, Burauen, La Paz and MacArthur to the northeast, Javier to the east, and Abuyog and Mahaplag to the southeast. The climate is of Coronas Climate type IV, which is generally wet with no particularly discernible seasons. Its topography is generally mountainous in the eastern portion as it slopes down west towards the shore line. Generally an agricultural city, the common means of livelihood are farming and fishing. Some are engaged in hunting and in forestal activities. The most common crops grown are rice, corn, abaca, root crops, fruits, and vegetables. Various cottage industries can also be found in Baybay such as bamboo and rattan craft, ceramics, dress-making, fiber craft, food preservation, mat weaving, metal craft, furniture manufacture and other related activities. Also, it is the home of the premier university of the Visayas and also in Philippines and one of the leading schools in Southeast Asia on agricultural research, and was called as Resort University, the Visayas State University. Baybay is a major port on the central west coast of Leyte, Philippines, where ferries leave for Cebu and other islands. It has also the Baybay Public Terminal, which serves routes from Tacloban, Ormoc, Maasin, Manila, Davao City and some other major towns in Leyte, Southern Leyte and Samar provinces. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 102,841.. With an area of 45,934 hectares , it is the second largest city in the province after Ormoc City. Formerly, Baybay was the biggest town in Leyte in terms of population and second in terms of land area, after Abuyog. The Baybay language, a Visayan language distinct from both Waray-Waray and Cebuano, is spoken in the municipality of Baybay.

Tacloban City

Tacloban is a first income class city and the province capital of Leyte, Philippines. It is 360 miles southeast from Manila. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 221,174 and is the most populous city. In the 2013 election, it had 109,027 registered voters. It is also the regional center of the Eastern Visayas, being the main gateway by air to the region. Tacloban was briefly the capital of the Philippines, from 20 October 1944 to 27 February 1945. In an extensive survey conducted by the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center and released in July 2010, Tacloban ranks as the fifth most competitive city in the Philippines, and second in the emerging cities category. On 8 November 2013, the city was largely destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan, having previously suffered similar destruction and loss of life in 1897 and 1912. On 17 January 2015, Pope Francis visited Tacloban during his Papal Visit in the Philippines and held a mass at San Jose, and later he led mass of 30,000 people in front of the airport.

Lake Danao

Lake Danao is a guitar-shaped lake on the island of Leyte, Philippines in the province of Leyte. The lake is covering an area of 148 hectares . It is situated in the 2,193 hectares Lake Danao National Park, which also includes the Amandiwin mountain range. The lake is 18 kilometres northeast of Ormoc City, half an hour drive along the San Pablo Tongonan and Milagro Lake Danao roads. It was originally named "Lake Imelda" and was declared a national park on June 2, 1972 by virtue of presidential memorandum issued by then President Ferdinand Marcos. Later it was renamed and declared as Lake Danao National Park on February 3, 1998 through Proclamation No. 1155 and is now protected by Republic Act No. 7586 otherwise known as the National Integrated Protected Area System Act of 1992. The lake supplies potable water to at least seven towns in Eastern Leyte including Tacloban City as well as the source of irrigation for ricelands in some municipalities like Dagami, Burauen, Pastrana and Tabon-tabon. At 650 metres above sea level, Lake Danao lies on an altitude similar to Tagaytay, making the area cooler than the average Philippine temperature.

Visayas State University

The Visayas State University is a premier university in the Philippines located at the city Baybay, Leyte, Philippines. It is one of the leading universities in Southeast Asia for research in agriculture. The five-campus VSU system has eight colleges, three institutes and one school. Located in the main campus are the College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Engineering, College of Education, College of Forestry and Environmental Science, College of Arts and Science, College of Nursing, College of Management and Economics,College of Agriculture and Food Sciences, Institute of Strategic Research and Development Studies, and the Graduate School and Special Programs. Visayas State University is the only university in the Visayas acknowledged by the Philippine Department of Tourism as a tourist destination because of its diverse flora and fauna bounding the mainland and sea from side to side. With Mount Pangasugan and the Camotes Sea as VSU's backdrop, it makes the university distinctive from any other colleges and universities in the region. VSU administration is currently promoting the school as a "Resort University" for it has resorts, seafront suites, cottages, and bungalows catering to visitors and tourists coming over to the university. The Main Campus has an Open University which takes care of the distance education program. Its external campuses which are located in the different parts of Leyte are the College of Fisheries , College of Industrial Technology , College of Environmental and Agricultural Technology , College of Education and Agricultural Technology . It continues to specialize in agricultural research and education, including work in jatropha propagation for the production of biofuel and development of a dwarf macapuno coconut and root-crops, particularly, sweet potato, cassava and yam. The university also hosts a program on rain forestation, making VSU as the only school in the Visayas to be labeled as a "Dark Green School" by the Environmental Education Network of the Philippines. Programs are available in Agro-Industry, Information Technology, Hospitality Management, Tropical Ecology, Veterinary Medicine, Forestry, Fishery, and Food Science and Technology. The 1,099-hectare campus hosts 193 buildings composed of academic departments, research and trainings centers, staff and student housing facilities and other vital structures. The University is home to faculty and academic staff obtaining most of their local and international recognitions in research and development, 92 of whom are Ph. D. degree holders, 110 MS degree holders and 72 BS degree holders from reputable colleges and universities here and abroad.

Samar State University

Samar State University is a university in the province of Samar, Philippines. The main campus is in Catbalogan City, Samar. Formerly known as the Samar State Polytechnic College , it has three external campuses, namely, the Paranas Campus in Paranas; Mercedes Campus (the former Samar Regional School of Fisheries (SRSF)) in Barangay Mercedes, Catbalogan City, and the Basey Campus, the future site of the university's College of Agriculture and Forestry. Samar State University is mandated to provide advanced instruction and professional training in the arts, philosophy, social sciences, agriculture, fishery, forestry, science and technology, engineering, education, law, and other related fields, and also to undertake research and extension services, and provide progressive leadership in its area of specialization.

Guiuan

Guiuan is a first-class municipality in the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 47,037 people. Guiuan played a significant part in Philippine history. In the 16th century, when Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines, it is believed that he first landed on the island of Homonhon. It is probably because of this that the majority of the population of the town are Catholics. The town's church, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, is one of the oldest in the country. During the Second World War, Guiuan served as one of the Alliance's bases. Now all that is left of the American occupation are concrete slabs which once served as the foundations of a vast supply depot, and an air strip, which now serves as the town's own airport. As well as a rich historical background, Guiuan has many scenic spots. Being a coastal town on the Pacific side, the town has many white-sand beaches that are suitable for swimming and surfing.

Borongan

Borongan, pronounced bo-róng-gan, officially the City of Borongan , is a component city and the provincial capital of the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines. Its cityhood was settled by the Supreme Court of the Philippines when it decided with finality on April 12, 2011 the constitutionality of its city charter, Republic Act 9394, which conferred upon and elevated the status of the municipality of Borongan into a component city of the province of Eastern Samar.

Dagami

Dagami is a third class municipality in the Province of Leyte, Philippines. According to the 2010 census of population, the town has 31,490 inhabitants with a density of 188 persons per square kilometer. Waray-Waray is the language spoken by the residents called Dagamin-on. It is classified as a third class municipality and mere dependent on agriculture such as coconut, rice and corn farming. The employment rate is 63% of the total population workforce in the municipality. Its total land area of 161.5 square kilometers, equivalent to 16,165 hectares. More than half of its plains on the eastern side is cultivated for rice and corn farming while the western side is planted with coconut with the westernmost area as forestland. Coconut is a major source of income form tuba and copra the raw material for production of coconut oil. The town of Dagami is famous for its local delicacies called "Binagol" (made with sweetened mashed giant taro called talian and packed in half of a leaf-covered coconut shell), "Moron" and "Sagmani".

Padre Burgos

Padre Burgos is a fifth class municipality in the province of Southern Leyte, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 10,525 people. Padre Burgos is named after the priest Padre Jose Burgos of the Gomburza priest martyrs. The town being surrounded by Sogod Bay in the East, Padre Burgos was once called "Tamulayag", a vernacular slang which means "Let's go fishing". Thus, the town's main livelihood is fishing. The town is famous for its white sand beaches like the Tangkaan Beach, from where you can see the island of Limasawa; the Likay-Likay Beach, where you can go fishing and snorkeling; the Bukana which is like a small swam of water and serve as a home of many fishes in Buenavista, the floating Balsa of Bas. And the beaches in Brgy. Lungsodaan. Padre Burgos is also famous to diving enthusiasts, the underwater beauty boasts of many colorful clusters of corals. With the Local Government's cooperation, Coral Cay, a foreign non-profit organization established its offices in Brgy. Tangkaan whose main purpose is to provide help among local people to maintain fish sanctuaries, awareness programs on ocean-life preservation, and clean-up activities on the shorelines of Padre Burgos. Padre Burgos is also known for its "budbod" , a sticky rice which is very sweet.

Capul

Capul is a fifth class island municipality in the province of Northern Samar, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 12,659 people. Prior to its founding as a town, Capul Island itself with its lighthouse built on the island, served as a guidepost for the Acapulco-Manila galleon trade vessels passing through the treacherous waters of San Bernardino Strait. It also served as the capital of Samar from 1848 to 1852. The name Capul came from the word Acapulco, an old trading post in Mexico. Capul is the only town in the province of Northern Samar with a distinct language, Inabaknon, instead of Waray-Waray, the native language spoken by the locals of Samar island.

Capul Island Lighthouse

Capul Island Lighthouse is a lighthouse on Titoog Point in San Luis on the northern tip of Capul Island, Northern Samar in the Philippines. It marks the western entrance to the San Bernardino Strait coming in from Ticao Pass. Construction on the lighthouse was started on October 1893 and it was first lit on December 1896 while the station was still partially complete. Work was suspended a month before on November 1896 on the onset of the Philippine Revolution. The Capul Island Lighthouse together with the Batag Island Lighthouse were declared provincial historical landmarks by the province of Northern Samar in October 2008.

Saint Thomas Aquinas College is a Roman Catholic private school located at the corner between Bagares Street and Concepcion Street, Barangay Zone IV, Sogod, Southern Leyte, Philippines. It is considered one of the oldest schools in Southern Leyte, serving the community since January 6, 1946. One of its sister schools are the Saint Teresa School of Hilongos and Saint Anthony's High School of Anahawan.

Maasin

Maasin, officially the City of Maasin or simply Maasin City, is the capital city of Southern Leyte, Philippines. A fourth class city with 70 barangays, it is located on the western part of the province with land area of 21,171 hectares . According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 85,560. Maasin City is the commercial and religious center of Southern Leyte and the south-western part of Leyte Island. On August 10, 2000, Maasin was converted into a city. The Diocese of Maasin was founded on August 14, 1968.

It is also mandated to undertake research and extension services, and provided progressive leadership in its areas of specialization. Formerly the Southern Leyte State College of Science and Technology, SLSU was converted through the passage of Republic Act 9261 on March 7, 2004. SLSU is the only college university in the province of Southern Leyte. The five campuses that comprise the University Sogod Main Campus shall focus on quality programs in Science and Technology Hinunangan shall focus on agricultural entrepreneurship Tomas Oppus shall focus on academic institution in teacher education San Juan shall focus on business and administration Bontoc shall focus on fishery development SLSU- Hinunangan Campus RA 5380 established the Hinunangan Agricultural and Vocational School on September 1, 1975. RA 7931 converted the school into a tertiary institution and renamed to the Southern Leyte Institute of Agriculture and Technology RA 9261 established the Southern Leyte State University Hinunangan after its integration with SLSCST in 1999. SLSU- Tomas Oppus P.D. 2024 established the Tomas Oppus Normal College which was formerly known as the Tomas Oppus Community College and eventually became a State College on February 1, 1986. DECS Regional Office granted the school to offer a 4-yearcourse in AB and BSED programs in 1987 RA 9261 established the Southern Leyte State University through the integration of this college with SLSCST on March 7, 2004 SLSU- Bontoc RA No. 3938 established the Bontoc Agricultural and Technical School on June 7, 1964 and three years later was renamed to **Bontoc National Agricultural and Fishery School BP Bilang 494 established the Southern Leyte Agro-Fishery Technical Institute which became a full-pledged tertiary institution on June 10, 1983 BP Bilang 888 renamed the school to Ruperto K. Kangleon Memorial Agro-Fisheries Technical Institute on November 22, 1985. RA 9261 established the Southern Leyte State University- Bontoc after its integration with SLSCST in 1999 SLSU- San Juan Campus The San Juan Polytechnic College was formerly a Municipal High School established in 1946 and eighteen years later, it was converted into Cabalian National Vocational High School by Legislation. In 1968, Congress changed the school into San Juan Comprehensive High School and by virtue of Batas Pambansa Blg. 569 the San Juan Polytechnic College was established on June 24, 1983. RA 9261 established the Southern Leyte State University-San Juan after its integration with SLSCST in 1999.

Batag Island Lighthouse

Batag Island Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse on Batag Island off the coast of the town of Laoang in the province of Northern Samar in the Philippines. The light marks the northeastern point of Samar Island and lead international ships to the entrance of the San Bernardino Strait marked by the San Bernardino Light. One of the most traveled waterways in the archipelago, together with the Capul Island Light, these stations are invaluable to vessels coming from the Pacific Ocean and entering the country through the San Bernardino Strait on its way to Manila or any other ports of the Philippines. After Maniguin Island and Cape Bolinao Lighthouse, this is the third major lighthouse wholly designed and built by the Americans in the early part of American Colonial Period in the Philippines. It was the exact duplicate of the Cape Bolinao lighthouse when it was completed, both standing at 101 ft and both equipped with third-order lights. The Batag lighthouse together with the Capul Island Lighthouse were declared provincial historical landmarks by the province of Northern Samar in October 2008. Lighthouses in the Philippines are maintained by the Philippine Coast Guard.

Zumarraga

Zumarraga is a municipality in Gipuzkoa province of the Basque Country autonomous community of Spain. In 1446 a battle took place there during the War of the Bands.
