Top Attractions in Munich

Olympiaturm

The Olympic Tower in the Olympic Park, Munich was built for the 1972 Summer Olympics. It has an overall height of 291 m and a weight of 52,500 tons. At a height of 190 m there is an observation platform as well as a small rock and roll museum housing various memorabilia, which is signposted as "Rock Museum" outside the entrance. Since its opening in 1968, the tower has registered over 35 million visitors . At a height of 182 m there is a revolving restaurant, which seats 230 people. A full revolution takes 53 minutes. The tower also serves as a broadcast tower, and has one Deutsche Telekom maintenance elevator with a speed of 4 m/s, as well as two visitor lifts with a speed of 7 m/s which have a capacity of about 30 people per car. The travel time is about 30 seconds. The tower is open daily from 09:00 to 24:00.

Allianz Arena

The Allianz Arena [ʔaˈli̯ant͡s ʔaˈʁeːna] is a football stadium in Munich, Bavaria, Germany with a 75,024 seating capacity. Widely known for its exterior of inflated ETFE plastic panels, it is the first stadium in the world with a full colour changing exterior. Located at 25 Werner-Heisenberg-Allee at the northern edge of Munich's Schwabing-Freimann borough on the Fröttmaning Heath, it is the third largest arena in Germany behind Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund and the Olympiastadion in Berlin. The two professional Munich football clubs FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 München have played their home games at the Allianz Arena since the start of the 2005-06 season. The clubs had previously played their home games at the Munich Olympic Stadium since 1972. TSV 1860 München previously had a 50% share in the stadium but FC Bayern Munich purchased their shares for 11 million euros in April, 2006. The arrangement allows TSV 1860 München to play at the stadium while retaining no ownership. The large financial services provider Allianz purchased the naming rights to the stadium for 30 years. However this name cannot be used when hosting FIFA and UEFA events, since these governing bodies have policies forbidding corporate sponsorship from companies that are not official tournament partners. During the 2006 World Cup, the stadium was referred to as FIFA World Cup Stadium Munich. In UEFA club matches, it is known as Fußball Arena München [ˈfuːsbal ʔaˈʁeːna ˈmʏnçən], and it hosted the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final. The stadium has been nicknamed "Schlauchboot" . The museum of Bayern Munich, FC Bayern Erlebniswelt, is located inside the Allianz Arena.

Palais Ludwig Ferdinand

The Palais Ludwig Ferdinand is an early 19th-century palace in Munich, Germany, designed by Leo von Klenze. It is located on the Wittelsbacherplatz but forms part of an ensemble with the buildings on the west side of the Odeonsplatz. It was Klenze's own residence, then belonged to Princes Alfons and Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria. It is now the headquarters of Siemens. The palace was built in 1825–26 for Karl Anton Vogel, a manufacturer of gold and silver thread, to a plan by Franz Xaver Widmann and with façades by Leo von Klenze, who lived on the piano nobile for 25 years. Klenze had originally intended the site for the first Protestant church in Munich, but that was later built elsewhere by Johann Nepomuk Pertsch. The east front of the palace is at the head of a short unnamed street which branches off the Odeonsplatz, between the Odeon and the Palais Leuchtenberg, which Klenze had previously designed with identical exteriors, so that on that side the three form an ensemble. This was originally the main façade of the building, designed by Klenze with a projecting central bay and a balcony above the main entrance, and with details echoing his Bazar building directly across the Odeonsplatz. Around 1850, the building was extended to the west. From 1878 the building belonged to Princes Alfons and Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria, from whom its older names are derived. Ludwig Ferdinand had it remodelled, and around 1900 the façade on Wittelsbacherplatz was embellished with arched doorways and a balcony. The building was badly damaged in World War II. After reconstruction, it was rented in 1949 to Siemens & Halske, a predecessor of Siemens AG, who initially used it for their motor pool and casino business. After Prince Ludwig Ferdinand died in 1949, Siemens bought it in 1957 from his heirs, and it is now the company's headquarters. A staircase was added on the Wittelsbacherplatz side in 1968.

Munich Residenz

The Munich Residenz is the former royal palace of the Bavarian monarchs of the House of Wittelsbach in the centre of the city of Munich, Germany. The Residenz is the largest city palace in Germany and is today open to visitors for its architecture, room decorations, and displays from the former royal collections. The complex of buildings contains ten courtyards and displays 130 rooms. The three main parts are the Königsbau, the Alte Residenz and the Festsaalbau . A wing of the Festsaalbau contains the Cuvilliés Theatre since the reconstruction of the Residenz after World War II. It also houses the Herkulessaal, the primary concert venue for the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. The Byzantine Court Church of All Saints at the east side is facing the Marstall, the building for the former Court Riding School and the royal stables.

Botanischer Garten München-Nymphenburg

The Botanischer Garten München-Nymphenburg is a botanical garden and arboretum located at Menzinger Str. 65, Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It is open daily, except on 24 and 31 December; an admission fee is charged. Munichs first botanical garden, now called the "old botanical garden", was established in 1809 to designs by Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell near Karlsplatz, where its remains are still visible. Todays garden was created in 1914 in the Munich outskirts at Nymphenburg to designs by the garden architects Holfeld. In 1966 it became affiliated with the Botanische Staatssammlung München and the Institute of Systematic Botany at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Today the garden cultivates about 14,000 species on approximately 18 hectares, and serves to educate the public and train students of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University, as well as preserve rare plants and European bee species. Major areas include an alpine garden, arboretum, collection of moor and steppe plants, rhododendrons, rose garden, and systematic garden. The garden also contains an extensive greenhouse complex, including rooms for bromeliads and Arecaceae, cactus and succulents, cycads, ferns, orchids, and Mexican plants. The orchid collection includes over 2700 species from 270 genera, as well as hybrids, with special collections of Catasetinae, Cattleya, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Dracula, Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium, Pleione, Stanhopeinae, Vanda, and Zygopetalinae. The garden also maintains an external station, the Alpengarten auf dem Schachen .
