Patna

Patna is the capital and largest city of the state of Bihar in India. Patna is the second largest city in eastern India after Kolkata. It had an estimated population of 1.68 million in 2011, making it the 19th largest city in India. With over 2 million people, its urban agglomeration is the 18th largest in India. Patna also serves as the seat of Patna High Court. One of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. Patna was founded in 490 BCE by the king of Magadha. Ancient Patna, known as Pataliputra, was the capital of the Magadha Empire under the Haryanka, Nanda, Mauryan, Shunga, Gupta and Pala empires. Pataliputra was a seat of learning and fine arts. Its population during the Maurya period was about 400,000. The modern city of Patna is situated on the southern bank of river Ganges. The city also straddles the rivers Sone, Gandak and Punpun. The city is approximately 35 kilometres in length and 16 to 18 kilometres wide. In June 2009, the World Bank ranked Patna second in India for ease of starting a business. As of 2011-12, Patna had the highest per capita gross district domestic product in Bihar, at ₹63,063. Using figures for assumed average annual growth, Patna is the 21st fastest growing city in the world and 5th fastest growing city in India according to a study by the City Mayors' Foundation. Patna registered an average annual growth of 3.72% during 2006-2010. Patna is among the top 15 cities of India by GDP. The Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain pilgrimage centres of Vaishali, Rajgir, Nalanda, Bodh Gaya, and Pawapuri are nearby and Patna City is also a sacred city for Sikhs as the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, was born here.

Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya is a religious site and place of pilgrimage associated with the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Gaya district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is famous as it is the place where Gautama Buddha is said to have obtained Enlightenment under what became known as the Bodhi Tree. For Buddhists, Bodh Gaya is the most important of the main four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. In 2002, Mahabodhi Temple, located in Bodh Gaya, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Rajendra Nagar

Rajendra Nagar (often spelled Rajender Nagar) is a neighbourhood in Patna, Bihar, India. It is named after Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. It is spread between Kumhrar road and Nala road from Dinkar golambar and Ramakrishna Avenue to Saidpur road. This area is served by Kadamkuan PS of Patna Police.

Bhagalpur

Bhagalpur is a city and a Municipal corporation situated on the southern bank of the Ganges in the Indian state of Bihar. It is the third largest city in Bihar and the largest city in Eastern Bihar. It is one of the major educational, commercial and political centers of Eastern India. It covers an area of 110 square kilometres and lies between 25.07°N 25.30°N latitude and 86.37°E 87.30°E longitude. Bhagalpur registered average annual population growth of 3.72%, between 2006 and 2010. It is the administrative headquarters of the Bhagalpur district and Bhagalpur Division. The town is situated 220 kilometres east of Patna and 60 kilometres east of Munger. The city was referred to as one of the largest trade centers in Eastern India by the 7th century Chinese travellers Xuanzang and Faxian. At that time the city had a large harbour at Champanagar, now known as Champanala on the Ganges river, which flows on the western boundary of the present city near Nathnagar. Many boats and coins of the Middle and Far East were found during archaeological excavations carried out in the 1970s. The silk industry in the city is hundreds of years old producing Tussar Silk and Tussar Saree, and Bhagalpur is known in India as the "Silk City". The Silk Institute and Agricultural University are located in the town. Other education facilities include the Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur College of Engineering, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, T.N.B.Law College and Homeopathic colleges. In 2010, Bihar Agricultural University was set up in Sabour, Bhagalpur. The Gangetic plains surrounding the city are very fertile and the main crops include rice, wheat, maize, barley, and oilseeds. The economy of Bhagalpur is dependent mainly on agriculture and small businesses. The river is home to the Gangetic dolphin, the National Aquatic Animal of India, which is found in Ganges Basin and the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary is established near the town.

Hajipur

Hajipur is the headquarters of Vaishali district of Tirhut Division in Indian state of Bihar. The city is known for producing bananas. Patna, the capital of Bihar is only 10 km from Hajipur.The metropolis of Patna comprises PRDA area, includes Hajipur. Mahatma Gandhi Setu, one of the longest bridges in the world, links it to Patna. After Patna, it is the fastest developing city in bihar, primarily because of its close proximity to Patna . There has been plans to expand Patna to 'Greater Patna', by absorbing Hajipur and other surrounding towns in it. Hajipur Industrial Area is a developing business hub in the northern part of the state. Britannia has its baking unit in this part of Bihar. From 1869 to 2002 Hajipur had Nagar Panchayat as the executive unit which later developed into the metropolis in the year 2002 and is administered by a Hajipur Municipal Corporation. The area of Hajipur city spread across 19.64sq. km . The city is divided into 39 wards. In 1979, a museum was established in Hajipur, By the Directorate of Archaeology and museum, Bihar.

The Great Buddha

The Giant Buddha Statue is one of the many stops in the Buddhist pilgrimage and tourist routes in Bodhgaya, Bihar. The statue is 25 m high in meditation pose or dhyana mudra seated on a lotus in open air. It took seven years to complete with the help of 12,000 masons. It is a mix of sandstone blocks and red granite. It is possibly the largest built in India and was consecrated on 18 November 1989 by the 14th Dalai Lama. The foundation stone for the statue was placed in 1982.

Barabar Caves

The Barabar Caves are the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, mostly dating from the Maurya Empire, some with Ashokan inscriptions, located in the Bela Ganj Block of Gaya district, Bihar, India, 24 km north of Gaya. These caves are situated in the twin hills of Barabar and Nagarjuni caves of the 1.6 km distant Nagarjuni Hill sometimes are singled out as Nagarjuni Caves. These rock-cut chambers date back to the 3rd century BC, Maurya period, of Ashoka and his grandson Dasaratha Maurya. Though Buddhists themselves, they allowed various Jain sects to flourish under a policy of religious tolerance. The caves were used by ascetics from the Ajivika sect, founded by Makkhali Gosala, a contemporary of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, and of Mahavira, the last and 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. Also present at the site are several rock-cut Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. Most caves at Barabar consist of two chambers, carved entirely out of granite, with a highly polished internal surface and exciting echo effect. The first chamber was meant for worshippers to congregate in a large rectangular hall, and the second, a small, circular, domed chamber for worship, this inner chamber probably had a small stupa like structure, at some point, though they are now empty. The caves were featured –mistakenly located in a fictitious Marabar – in the book A Passage to India by English author E. M. Forster.

Bodhi Tree

The Bodhi Tree, also known as Bo and "peepal tree" in Nepal and Bhutan, was a large and very old sacred fig tree located in Bodh Gaya, India, under which Siddhartha Gautama, the spiritual teacher later known as Gautama Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment, or Bodhi. In religious iconography, the Bodhi tree is recognizable by its heart-shaped leaves, which are usually prominently displayed. Bodhi trees are planted in close proximity to every Buddhist monastery. The term "Bodhi Tree" is also widely applied to currently existing trees, particularly the Sacred Fig growing at the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, which is a direct descendant planted in 288 BC from the original specimen. This tree is a frequent destination for pilgrims, being the most important of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Other holy Bodhi trees which have a great significance in the history of Buddhism are the Anandabodhi tree in Sravasti and the Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Both are believed to have been propagated from the original Bodhi tree.

Sasaram

Sasaram (Hindi: सासाराम, Urdu: سسرام‎), sometimes also spelled as Sahsaram, is the administrative headquarter of the Rohtas district in the Indian state of Bihar.Rohtas, a historical place, was created as District in the year 1972 carved out of the district of Sahabad. It is famous for production of stone chips, and for quarrying industry. Major languages spoken in this region are Bhojpuri, Hindi, and Urdu; local religions include Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, and Jainism.

Rajgir

Rajgir is a city and a notified area in Nalanda district in the Indian state of Bihar. The city of Rajgir was the first capital of the kingdom of Magadha, a state that would eventually evolve into the Mauryan Empire. Its date of origin is unknown, although ceramics dating to about 1000 BC have been found in the city. This area is also notable in Buddhism and Jainism as one of the favorite places for Mahavira and Gautama Buddha and the well known "Atanatiya" conference was held at Vulture's Peak mountain. Rajgir is connected to Patna via Bakhtiarpur by rail and road. Bakhtiarpur lies midway between Patna and Mokameh. Road access is by NH 30A to Bakhtiarpur and NH 31 towards south to reach Bihar Sharif. From Mokameh NH 31 to Bihar Sharif. From there, NH 82 will leads to Rajgir. Rajgir is around 100 KM from both Patna and Mokameh. It is located in a green valley surrounded by rocky hills, Rajgir hills. Indian Railways run trains directly from Rajgir to New Delhi, Shramjeevi Express.

Nalanda

Nalanda was an acclaimed Mahāvihāra, a large Buddhist monastery in ancient Magadha, India. The site is located about 95 kilometres southeast of Patna near the town of Bihar Sharif, and was a centre of learning from the fifth century CE to c. 1200 CE. Historians often characterize Nalanda as a university. Amartya Sen has called it the oldest university in the world which "had been providing higher education to thousands of students from Asian countries for more than six hundred years... by the time the first European university was established in Bologna in 1088." Nalanda flourished under the patronage of the Gupta Empire as well as under emperor Harsha and later still, under the rulers of the Pala Empire. At its peak, the school attracted scholars and students from as far away as Tibet, China, Korea, and Central Asia. It was very likely ransacked and destroyed by an army of the Muslim Mamluk Dynasty under Bakhtiyar Khilji in c. 1200 CE.

Mundeshwari Temple

The Mundeshwari Devi Temple is located at Kaura in Kaimur district in the state of Bihar, India on the Mundeshwari Hills. It is an ancient temple dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and Shakti and is considered one of the oldest Hindu temples in Bihar. It is also considered as the oldest functional temple of world. The inscription of an information plaque erected by the Archaeological Survey of India at the site indicates the dating of the temple to 108 AD. However, there are other versions for the dating stating the Saka era, prior to Gupta dynasty rule in India, and specifically to 105 AD according to the Administrator of the Bihar Religious Trust Board. The temple, a protected monument under ASI since 1915, is substantially damaged and is under restoration.

Mahatma Gandhi Setu

Mahatma Gandhi Setu is a bridge over the river Ganges connecting Patna in the south to Hajipur in the north of Bihar. Its length is 5,575 metres and it is one of the longest river bridges in India. It was inaugurated in May 1982 by the then Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi.

Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan is located off Bailey Road in Patna, Bihar, India. The park was opened to the public as a zoo in 1973. Munger is a twin city and a Municipal Corporation situated in the Indian state of Bihar. It is the administrative headquarters of Munger district and Munger Division. Among its industries are those involved in railway, gun, tobacco and dairy product manufacture. Historically, Munger is known for being an ancient seat of rule. The twin city comprises Munger and Jamalpur situated on the southern bank of the river Ganges. It is situated 60 km west of Bhagalpur, and 180 km east of capital city Patna.

Muzaffarpur

Muzaffarpur is a city in Muzaffarpur district in Tirhut region of Bihar. It also serves as the headquarters of Muzaffarpur district and Tirhut division. Muzaffarpur is famous for Shahi lychees and is known as the "Lychee Kingdom". It is situated on the banks of the perennial Burhi Gandak River, which flows from the Someshwar Hills of Himalayas. The present city of Muzaffarpur came to its existence in the 18th century and named after Muzaffar Khan, an Amil under British Dynasty.

Statue of Vasupujya

The Statue of Vasupujya located at Champapur in the Indian state of Bihar, is one of the tallest statue in eastern India. The statue is dedicated to Vasupujya, the twelfth Jain Tirthankara of the present cosmic age. The height of the statue is 31 ft. The statue was constructed and donated by Smt Sona Devi Sethi Charitable trust, Nagaland. Champapur is a Siddhakshetra and occupies a very significant place among the Jains. This is said to be the place where all the five kalyanaks (five auspicious events)- Garbh, Janam, Diksha, Kevalgyana and Moksh kalyanak of Tirthankara Vasupujya took place. It is said that the first tirthankar Rishabha, twenty-third Tirthankara Parshvanath and last tirthankara Mahavira had their Chaturmas at this place. Mahavira had his third and twelfth Chaturmas at this place.

Mahabodhi Temple

The Mahabodhi Templea UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a Buddhist temple in Bodh Gaya, marking the location where Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment. Bodh Gaya is located about 96 km from Patna, Bihar state, India. The complex was primarily a Mahayana site. Images of the site include Padmapani, Avalokiteśvara, Vajrapani, Khasarpana, Tara, Marichi, Yamantaka, Jambhala and Vajravārāhī. Images of Vishnu, Mahadeva, Surya and other Vedic deities are also associated with the site.

Gandhi Maidan or Gandhi Maidan Marg is one of the most important thoroughfares in Patna, India. It is a historical place and is considered as a landmark of the city. Gandhi Maidan is the main market and commercial area of Patna with Ashok Rajpath which starts from Gandhi Maidan and Dak Bungalow Crossing and Bailey Road besides Frazer Road, Exhibition Road, Boring Road, and Boring Canal Road. There are many important institutes that have developed around the area of Gandhi Maidan.

Patan Devi

Patan Devi, also called Maa Patneshwari, is the oldest and one of the most sacred temples of Patna. It is regarded as one of the 51 Siddha Shakti Pithas in India. According to Puranic legends, the right thigh of the corpse of Sati had fallen here when it was chopped off by Lord Vishnu with his Sudarshan Chakra. The ancient temple, originally called Maa Sarvanand Kari Patneshwari, is believed to be the abode of the goddess Durga. The name of the city Patna is widely believed to have been derived from the name of the Bari Patan Devi Temple. Some however doubt whether the name of Patna is derived from this temple. According to them the name is derived from patan which means a town and Patna was a big place of export and import.

Viraat Ramayan Mandir

Viraat Ramayan Mandir is an upcoming Hindu temple complex in Kesaria, Bihar, India, with an estimated budget of ₹500 crore . When completed, it will be the largest religious monument in the world. The Virat Ramayan Mandir will be almost double the height of the world famous 12th century Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia, which is 215 feet high. The temple will have a hall with a seating capacity of 20,000 people. The construction of the temple is scheduled to start in June 2015.

Bailey Road

Bailey Road is a road and neighbourhood in Patna, India. It connects Patna with Danapur. It roughly starts from Income Tax Golambar and ends in Danapur, running through the heart of the city. It is one of the most important roads in the city. Many important landmarks like Patna High Court, Patna Women's College, Patna Secretariat, Patna Zoo, Patna Airport etc. are situated beside or near to this road. Bailey Road was officially renamed as Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg, but this road is still widely known as Bailey Road. This area is served by Shastrinagar Police Station of Patna Police.

Gurdwara Gobind Ghat

Gurdwara Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ghat situated on the bank of river Ganges is hardly 200 yards from Takht Sri Patna Sahib. It is also popular as Kangan Ghat where child Guru Gobind Singh had thrown his gold bangle. On the same bank child Guru Gobind Singh had blessed mental peace to Pandit Shiv Dutt, a devotee of Rama. Here the child Guru Gobind Singh used to play with his playmates on the bank of the Ganges. This ghat about one furlong from Takht Shri Harmandir Saheb is marked by a gateway over which this Gurdwara is situated in a single room. The river has, however, receded since away to the north.

Tomb of Sher Shah Suri

The tomb of Sher Shah Suri is in the Sasaram town of Bihar state, India. The tomb was built in memory of Emperor Sher Shah Suri, a Pathan from Bihar who defeated the Mughal Empire and founded the Suri Empire in northern India. He died in an accidental gunpowder explosion in the fort of Kalinjar on 10th day of Rabi al-awwal, A.H. 952 or 13 May 1545 AD.

Padri Ki Haveli

Padri-Ki-Haveli , also known as St Mary's Church, it is the oldest church in Bihar. When Roman Catholics arrived in Bihar, they built a small church in 1713 at a place now known as Padri-ki-Haveli. The current church was re-designed by a Venetian architect Tirreto in 1772. He came from Kolkata to design this church. The foundation stone of this huge church has a dimension of 70 feet in length, 40 feet wide and 50 feet in height. Nawab Mir Qasim destroyed this church because of the quarrel with the British traders on 25 June 1763. Ancient records were destroyed and burnt consequently. Later, in 1857 during the Great Indian Rebellion again this church suffered with many damages. Today, the monument stands as an architectural wonder with intricate details which can be seen in few other churches of India.

Pawapuri

Pawapuri or Pava is a holy site for Jains located in the Nalanda district in the Bihar state of Eastern India. It is located about thirty-eight kilometers from Rajgir and 101 kilometers from Patna, the capital of Bihar.

Valmiki National Park

Valmiki National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the West Champaran district of Bihar state, India. The extensive forest area of Valmikinagar was previously owned by the Bettiah Raj and Ramanagar Raj until the early 1950s. Valmiki Tiger Reserve is one of the natural virgin recesses in east India, situated in the north west corner of Bihar. The pristine forest and wilderness of VTR is an excellent example of Himalayan Terai landscape. VTR comprises the Valmiki National Park and Valmiki Wildlife Sanctuary. The VTR forest area covers 899.38 square kilometres, which is 17.4% of the total geographical area of the district West Champaran. As of 2013, there were 22 tigers in the Reserve. The name of the district West Champaran derives from two words, Champa and Aranya, meaning forest of Champa trees. Geographically, it is situated between 83°0 50′ and 84°0 10′ E longitude and between 27°0 10′ and 27°0 03′ N latitude. Total forest area comprises about 900 square kilometres, out of which the Valmiki Wildlife Sanctuary is 880 square kilometres and spread of the National Park is about 335 square kilometres area. In the north, the protected areas are bordered by Nepal while the Indian state Uttar Pradesh bounds the sanctuary from western side. Bihar Government is turning 800 hectares of forest in VTR into Grassland making it Indias biggest grassland.

It is said to have been built during the reign of the Mahaprabhujis era. The Baithakji is looked after by aacharyaji and managed by Vaishnavs Trustees, with full dedication. There are 84 Mahaprabhuji Baithaks in India. If you're visiting an existing attraction, open it and add it to your timeline. If there is no attraction for the place you are visiting...

Click 'Add My Location' below
Or right-click on the map to mark a different location
Or long-press if you have a touch screen

You can even add locations while you're offline....

Load up the map when you're online and we'll keep track of your locaiton

Add existing attractions to your collection or create new attractions of your own
Collections can be:
- Public (Anyone can add attractions to your collection)
- Shared (Only yourself and Gurus you nominate can add content)
- Private (The collection will only be visible to yourself)

Uses

Local business or hotel
Showcase local attractions that you endorse
Clubs
Showcase attractions that members have created (eg. local historical society)
Special Interest
If GuRoute does not have a category for your special interest you add your attractions to your own collection instead

For existing attractions you can add more information specific to the theme of the tour
You can also add instructions on what to do or see en-route to the next tour-stop

When they reach each stop GuRoute will tell them about the place and give them the next clue
