Longmen Grottoes

The Longmen Grottoes or Longmen Caves are one of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art. Housing tens of thousands of statues of Buddha and his disciples, they are located 12 kilometres south of present-day Luòyáng in Hénán province, China. The images, many once painted, were carved into caves excavated from the limestone cliffs of the Xiangshan and Longmenshan mountains, running east and west. The Yi River flows northward between them and the area used to be called Yique . The alternative name of "Dragons Gate Grottoes" derives from the resemblance of the two hills that check the flow of the Yi River to the typical "Chinese gate towers" that once marked the entrance to Luoyang from the south. There are as many as 100,000 statues within the 1,400 caves, ranging from an 1 inch to 57 feet in height. The area also contains nearly 2,500 stelae and inscriptions, whence the name “Forest of Ancient Stelae", as well as over sixty Buddhist pagodas. Situated in a scenic natural environment, the caves were dug from a 1 kilometre stretch of cliff running along both banks of the river. 30% date from the Northern Wei Dynasty and 60% from the Tang, caves from other periods accounting for less than 10% of the total. Starting with the Northern Wei Dynasty in 493 AD, patrons and donors included emperors, Wu Zetian of the Second Zhou Dynasty, members of the royal family, other rich families, generals, and religious groups. In 2000 the site was inscribed upon the UNESCO World Heritage List as “an outstanding manifestation of human artistic creativity,” for its perfection of an art form, and for its encapsulation of the cultural sophistication of Tang China.

Henan Museum

The Henan Museum or Henan Provincial Museum, located in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China, is a history and art museum. It has a collection of more than 130,000 pieces of cultural relics through the ages. In addition to its collection of human history the museum is also home to many relics of natural history including dinosaur bones and fossils. Henan Museums present building, which opened in 1997, occupies an area of more than 100,000 square meters, with a total floor space of 78,000 square meters.

Yinxu

Yinxu, or Yin Xu, is the site of one of the ancient and major historical capitals of China. It is the source of the archeological discovery of oracle bones and oracle bone script, which resulted in the recognition of the earliest known Chinese writing. The archeological remnants known as Yinxu represent the ancient city of Yin, the last capital of Chinas Shang dynasty which existed through eight generations for 255 years, and through the reign of 12 kings. Yinxu was discovered, or rediscovered, in 1899; it is one of Chinas oldest and largest archeological sites, and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yinxu is located in northernmost Henan province near the modern city of Anyang, and near the Hebei and Shanxi province borders. Public access to the site is permitted.

Zhongyuan Tower

Zhongyuan Tower is a 388-metre tall steel tower in Zhengzhou, Henan province, China. It was completed in February, 2011. It is used as a television tower, 200-guest revolving restaurant, and observation tower. As of 2012, it was one of the twenty tallest towers in the world, and claimed to be the highest steel structure tower in the world .

Dengfeng

Dengfeng is a county-level city in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China. In ancient times, it was known as Yangcheng . Dengfeng has an area of 1220 square kilometers and a population of 630,000. Dengfeng is located at the foot of the Mount Song, one of the most sacred mountains in China. The city is one of the most renowned spiritual centres of China, home to various religious institutions and temples, such as the Taoist Zhongyue Temple, the Buddhist Shaolin Temple, as well as the Confucian Songyang Academy, hence its poetic expression derived from Chinese literature as the spiritual "centre of heaven and earth".

Zhengzhou Ferris Wheel

Zhengzhou Ferris Wheel is a 120-metre tall giant Ferris wheel at Century Amusement Park in Zhengzhou, Henan, China. When it was completed in 2003, Zhengzhou Ferris Wheel was the tallest Ferris wheel in China, and the second tallest in the world, after the 135-metre London Eye. There are now four 120 m Ferris wheels in China, the other three being Changsha Ferris WheelSuzhou Ferris Wheeland Tianjin Eye . The only Chinese Ferris wheel with a greater height is the 160-metre Star of Nanchang, which opened in 2006. There is at least one other giant Ferris wheel in Zhengzhou, at Renmin Park.

Kaifeng

Kaifeng , known previously by several names , is a prefecture-level city in east-central Henan, China. It was once the capital of the Song dynasty. There are currently nearly 5 million people living in its metropolitan area. Located along the southern bank of the Yellow River, it borders the provincial capital of Zhengzhou to the west, Xinxiang to the northwest, Shangqiu to the east, Zhoukou to the southeast, Xuchang to the southwest, and Shandong to the northeast.

Zhengzhou

Zhengzhou is a Chinese city and the provincial capital of Henan Province in east-central China. As a prefecture-level city, it also serves as the political, economic, technological, and educational centre of the province, as well as a major transportation hub for Central China. The city lies on the southern bank of the Yellow River, and is one of the Eight Great Ancient Capitals of China. With 8,626,505 inhabitants according to the 2010 census and 4,253,627 in its built-up area made of 6 urban districts, the city is one of the main built up areas of Henan region. Zhengzhou is now a rapidly growing city. Greater Zhengzhou was named as one of the 13 emerging megacities or megalopolises in China in a July 2012 report by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Shaolin Monastery

The Shaolin Monastery or Shaolin Temple is a Chan Buddhist temple in Dengfeng county, Zhengzhou, Henan province, China. The name refers to the forests of Shaoshi mountain, one of the seven peaks of Song mountains . Dating back 1,500 years, Shaolin Temple is the main temple of the Shaolin school of Buddhism to this day. Shaolin Monastery and its Pagoda Forest were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 as part of the "Historic Monuments of Dengfeng."

White Horse Temple

White Horse Temple is, according to tradition, the first Buddhist temple in China, established in 68 AD under the patronage of Emperor Ming in the Eastern Han dynasty capital Luoyang. The site is located just outside the walls of the ancient Eastern Han capital, some 12–13 kilometres east of Luoyang in Henan Province. It is located approximately 40 minutes by bus No. 56 from the Luoyang railway station. The temple, although small in size in comparison to many other temples in China, is considered by most believers as "the cradle of Chinese Buddhism". The geographical landmarks to the south of the temple are Manghan mountain and Lucoche River. The main temple buildings, a large complex, were reconstructed during the Ming and Qing dynasties. They were refurbished in the 1950s, and again in March 1973 after the Cultural Revolution. It has numerous halls divided by several courtyards and manicured gardens, covering an area extending to about 13 hectares . The display plaques in Chinese and English give ample descriptions of the Buddhist deities installed in various halls. Significant statues include Śākyamuni Buddha, Maitreya-the laughing Buddha, the Jade Buddha, and figures of saints such as Guru Avalokiteśvara, Amitābha and arhats. Stone statues of the two white horses, which brought the Indian monks to China, and of two mythical lions are seen at the entrance. Under international funding, the temple has undergone many changes, both structurally and internally. The most recent cooperative project, with India, was completed in 2008 when the Sanchi Stupa and the Sarnath Buddha statue were erected.

Gaocheng Astronomical Observatory

Gaocheng Astronomical Observatory, also known as the Dengfeng Observatory, is a World Heritage Site in Duke of Zhous shrine, Gaocheng Town, near Dengfeng in Henan Province, China. This site has a long tradition of astronomical observations, from the time of the Western Zhou up to the early Yuan Dynasty. There is also a gnomon used for the Da Yan calendar in 729 AD and the great observatory of the Yuan Dynasty.

Danjiangkou Reservoir

Danjiangkou Reservoir is a multi-purpose reservoir in Xichuan County, Henan and Danjiangkou City, Hubei province, Central China. Created by the Danjiangkou Dam, it serves as a supply of water for the region as well as irrigation, electricity generation and flood control. It was constructed in 1958, and at the time was one of the largest reservoirs in Asia.

Mount Song

Mount Song, is a culturally significant mountain in China. It is the "Central Great Mountain" among the Five Great Mountains and located in Henan province on the south bank of the Yellow River. Its summit is 1,500 meters above sea level.

The Pagoda Forest at Shaolin Temple refers to a number of stone or brick pagodas built in Henan province, China from 791 AD during the Tang Dynasty through the Song Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, and Qing Dynasty.

Mount Wangwu

Mount Wangwu is a mountain situated about 45 kilometres north west of Jiyuan City in China’s Henan province. Located in the Wangwushan-Yuntaishan National Park, Mount Wangwu is a famous Taoist site that includes the “Celestial Grotto of the Small Pristine Void” , one of the Ten Grotto-heavens of Taoism. According to legend, the Yellow Emperor used an altar on top of the mountain to offer sacrifices to heaven where he received the Book of Nine Elixirs , one of the earliest Chinese alchemical texts.

Fawang Temple

Fawang Temple is a Chinese Buddhist temple located 5 km northwest of the town of Dengfeng in Henan province, China. The temple is situated at the bottom of the Yuzhu Peak of Mount Song. This ancient temple features Chinese pagodas that were built during the Tang Dynasty . The most prominent of these early Tang era pagodas is a 40 m tall square-based stone tower with eaves, its ground floor measuring 7 m on each side with 2 m thick walls. Inside this pagoda is a shrine and a jade statue of the Buddha that was presented to the pagoda in 1409 by a member of the royal family stationed in Luoyang during the Ming Dynasty. This pagoda follows the similar design style of other Tang pagodas, such as multi-eaved, square-based Xumi Pagoda and Small Wild Goose Pagoda. Other Tang pagodas include three one-story pavilion style brick pagodas, each about 10 m high. Each one of these is capped with a conical roof with arc eaves. Other pagodas of the temple were built during the Yuan Dynasty .

Zhengzhou Hanghai Stadium

The Hanghai Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Zhengzhou, Henan, China. It is currently used mostly for football matches and athletics events. It serves as the home stadium for Henan Jianye of the Chinese Super League. The stadium has a capacity of 29,860 people. It opened in 2002 and it is located on 8 Chaofeng Road.

Spring Temple Buddha

The Spring Temple Buddha is a statue depicting Vairocana Buddha located in the Zhaocun township of Lushan County, Henan, China, built from 1997 to 2008. It is located within the Fodushan Scenic Area, close to National Freeway no. 311. At 128 m, which includes a 20 m lotus pedestal, it is the tallest statue in the world.

Emperors Yan and Huang

The sculptures of the Emperors Yan and Huang are the sixth tallest statues in the world at 106 meters. They depict two of the earliest Chinese emperors, Yan Di and Huang Di. The construction lasted 20 years and was completed in 2007. They are located in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, Peoples Republic of China. According to experts, the statues commemorate politics and the economy.

Hongqingsi Grottoes

Hongqing Temple Grotto is located in Yima, Henan. It consists of five caves, with a total of 46 shrines. More than 120 statues were chiseled during the Northern Wei Dynasty. In 1963, it was registered as a place of cultural importance in Henan, and was listed in the fifth edition of Chinese national cultural relics in 2001.

Jiahu

Jiahu was the site of a Neolithic settlement based in the central plain of ancient China, near the Yellow River. It is located between the floodplains of the Ni River to the north, and the Sha River to the south, 22 km north of the modern city of Wuyang, Henan Province. Most archaeologists consider the site to be one of the earliest examples of the Peiligang culture. Settled around 7000 BC, the site was later flooded and abandoned around 5700 BC. The settlement was surrounded by a moat and covered a relatively large area of 55,000 square meters . At one time, it was "a complex, highly organized Chinese Neolithic society," home to at least 250 people and perhaps as many as 800. The important discoveries of the Jiahu archaeological site include the Jiahu symbols, one of the worlds earliest examples in the history of writing, carved into tortoise shells and bones; the thirty-three Jiahu flutes carved from the wing bones of cranes, believed to be among the oldest playable musical instruments in the world; and evidence of wine fermented from rice, honey and hawthorn leaves. A broad variety of other artifacts indicates a fairly advanced settlement for the early Neolithic period, including residences, burial sites, pottery kilns, an assortment of implements made of stone and earthenware, and a large central structure believed to be a communal workspace. To date, 45 residences have been excavated at Jiahu. Most of these are small, between four and ten meters. Most of these were semi-subterranean and with a single room; however, some of these had additional rooms built on later. Rubbish pits and storage cellars were also excavated, and nine pottery kilns were identified.

Peoples Park is a public park located west of Erqi Road, in the center of Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province, China. It was built in 1951 and opened on 1 August 1952.

Huanbei

Huanbei is the site of an ancient Shang dynasty city on the northern outskirts of the modern city of Anyang in Henan province, China. It was discovered in 2000, and dates to the Middle Shang period . The name refers to its position to the north of the Huan River. The discovery was made after a regional survey undertaken in 1999 by the Institute of Archaeology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Archaeometry Laboratory at the University of Minnesota. This huge ancient city was buried eight feet beneath the surface when found. The city has walls of pounded earth forming an approximate square oriented 13 degrees east of north, with an area of 470 hectares , including a palace-temple complex of 41 hectares . Part of the site lies under Anyang's airport, limiting the scope of excavations. The city seems to have been burnt to the ground after 50 years of occupation, shortly before the construction of the last Shang dynasty capital at the site now known as Yinxu across the river. The city has since been excavated by joint teams from Institute of Archaeology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin and the University of British Columbia.

Yichuan County

Yichuan County, Henan is a county of Henan, China. It is under the administration of the Luoyang city. Yichuan is known as "the city of wine". Famous all over the world, Dukang wine was made in Yichuan by the originator, Dukang, who historically began making wine since in Xia Dynasty Shaokang times, and it has last more than 5000 years. Dukang wine not only sells best in various national provinces, but also exported to Japan, the United States, Canada, Thailand, including more than 50 countries.

Shangqiu

Shangqiu , formerly romanized as Shangkiu, is a city in eastern Henan province, Central China. It borders Kaifeng to the northwest, Zhoukou to the southwest, and the provinces of Shandong and Anhui to the northeast and southeast respectively. An ancient city with a rich history, Shangqiu was also the first capital of the Shang dynasty. Its population was 7,362,975 inhabitants at the 2010 census whom 1,536,392 lived in the built-up area made up of Liangyuan and Suiyang districts. Once merely a small village, Shangqiu has grown significantly in recent years. It is important geographically because it lies at a junction of several major railways, making its train station a major regional transportation hub.

Songyue Pagoda

The Songyue Pagoda, constructed in AD 523, is located at the Songyue Monastery on Mount Song, in Henan province, China. Built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, this pagoda is one of the few intact sixth-century pagodas in China and is also the earliest known Chinese brick pagoda. Most structures from that period were made of wood and have not survived, although ruins of rammed earth fortifications still exist. The spread of Buddhism dramatically influenced Chinese architecture. By the sixth century, Buddhism had spread with tremendous momentum throughout China: Chinese culture was adjusting and adapting its traditions to include Buddhism worship. The Chinese transformed the rounded earthen mound of the South Asian stupa into the towering pagoda to house the sacred buried relics of Buddha at its core. The pagoda has had a changing shape over time from its Indian Buddhist origins to its form in China. The unique many-sided shape of the Songyue Pagoda suggests that it represents an early attempt to merge the Chinese architecture of straight edges with the circular style of Buddhism from the Indian subcontinent. The perimeter of the pagoda decreases as it rises, as this is seen in Indian and Central Asian Buddhist cave temple pillars and the later round pagodas in China.

Iron Pagoda

The Iron Pagoda of Youguo Temple, Kaifeng City, Henan province, is a Buddhist Chinese pagoda built in 1049 during the Song dynasty of China. The pagoda is so-named not because it is made of iron, but because its color resembles that of iron. It is a brick pagoda tower built on the location of a previous wooden one that had been burnt down by lightning fire in 1044. Along with the Liuhe, Lingxiao, Liaodi, Pizhi, and Beisi pagodas, it is seen as a masterpiece of Song dynasty architecture.

Victoria Pavilion

Victoria Pavilion is a historic grandstand located on the western side of Fremantle Oval, in Fremantle, Western Australia. In January 1897 local architect F.W. Burwell won the competition held by the Fremantle Council for the design of a pavilion for Fremantle Oval. The foundation stone was laid on 25 June 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Built by Blackman Brothers at a cost of £3650, the pavilion was officially opened by Premier John Forrest on 6 November 1897. The building is listed on the Register of the National Estate.

Zhengzhou East Railway Station

The Zhengzhou East Railway Station , is a high speed passenger railway station in Zhengzhou, Henan, China. It is located approximately 3 km southeast of the International Conventional and Exhibition Centre in the Zhengdong New Area, between East Jinshiu Road and Shangdu Road on both sides of the New National Highway 107, on the junction of the North-South Jingguang Passenger Railway and the East-West Xulan Passenger Railway. Opened in September 2012, it is one of the largest railway interchange stations in China.

Banqiao Dam

The Banqiao Reservoir Dam is a dam on the River Ru in Zhumadian City, Henan province, China. Its failure in 1975 caused more casualties than any other dam failure in history. It was subsequently rebuilt. The Banqiao dam and Shimantan Reservoir Dam are among 62 dams in Zhumadian that failed catastrophically or were intentionally destroyed in 1975 during Typhoon Nina. These dam failures killed an estimated 171,000 people; 11 million people lost their homes.
