Wulingyuan

Wulingyuan ([ù.lǐŋ.ɥɛ̌n]; Chinese: 武陵源) is a scenic and historical site in the Wulingyuan District of south-central China's Hunan Province. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. It is noted for more than 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars and peaks across most of the site, many over 200 metres (660 ft) in height, along with many ravines and gorges with attractive streams, pools, lakes, rivers and waterfalls. It features 40 caves, many with large calcite deposits, and two natural bridges, Xianrenqiao (Bridge of the Immortals) and Tianqiashengkong (Bridge Across the Sky). The park covers an area of 690 square kilometers (266 square miles). Wulingyuan forms part of the Wuling Mountain Range. The scenic area consists of four national parks, which are the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve and the recently added Yangjiajie Scenic Area. Overall there are over 560 attraction sights to view.

Wulingyuan District

Wulingyuan District (simplified Chinese: 武陵源区; traditional Chinese: 武陵源區; pinyin: Wǔlíngyuán Qū) is one of two urban districts in Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, China, it is also the smallest district by population in Hunan. Located on the central area of Zhangjiajie, the district is surrounded by Cili County to the northeast and southeat, to the north by Sangzhi County, to the south and southwest by Yongding District. The district is named after Wulingyuan of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of famous scenic zones. Wuling District has an area of 397.53 kilometres (247.01 mi) with 52,712 of registered population (as of 2010 Census). It is divided into 2 subdistricts and 2 towns (November 27, 2015), its government seat is Jundiping (军地坪).

Changsha

Changsha is the capital of Hunan Province in south-central China, located on the lower reaches of the Xiang River, a branch of the Yangtze River. Its municipality covers an area of 11,819 square kilometres and, according to the 2010 Census, a population of 7,044,118 inhabitants. The city's urban area has a population of 3,617,469. Changsha was important from the time of the Qin dynasty . In AD 750-1100 Changsha was a major commercial hub, and its population increased greatly. Under the Qing dynasty, from 1664, it was the capital of Hunan province, and it was a major rice market. It was besieged during the Taiping Rebellion but never fell. Changsha was the site of Mao Zedong's conversion to communism. It was the scene of major battles in the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-45 and was briefly occupied by the Japanese. Rebuilt since 1949, the city is now a major interior port and a commercial and industrial center.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Chinese: 湖南张家界国家森林公园; pinyin: Húnán Zhāngjiājiè Guójiā Sēnlín Gōngyuán; literally: "Hunan Zhangjiajie National Forest Park") is a unique national forest park located in Zhangjiajie City in northern Hunan Province in the People's Republic of China. It is one of several national parks within the Wulingyuan Scenic Area. In 1982 it was recognized as China's first national forest park with an area of 4,810 ha (11,900 acres). Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is part of a much larger 397.5 km2 (153.5 sq mi) Wulingyuan Scenic Area. In 1992, Wulingyuan was officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was then approved by the Ministry of Land and Resources as Zhangjiajie Sandstone Peak Forest National Geopark (3,600 km2 (1,400 sq mi)) in 2001. In 2004, Zhangjiajie geopark was listed as a UNESCO global geopark. The most notable geographic features of the park are the pillar-like formations that are seen throughout the park. Although resembling karst terrain, this area is not underlain by limestones and is not the product of chemical dissolution, which is characteristic of limestone karst. They are the result of many years of physical, rather than chemical, erosion. Much of the weathering which forms these pillars are the result of expanding ice in the winter and the plants which grow on them. The weather is moist year round, and as a result, the foliage is very dense. The weathered material is carried away primarily by streams. These formations are a distinct hallmark of Chinese landscape, and can be found in many ancient Chinese paintings. One of the park's quartz-sandstone pillars, the 1,080-metre (3,540 ft) Southern Sky Column, had been officially renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" (阿凡达-哈利路亚山, pinyin: Āfándá hālìlùyà shān) in honor of the eponymous film in January 2010. According to park officials, photographs from Zhangjiajie inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains seen in the film. The film's director and production designers said that they drew inspiration for the floating rocks from mountains from around the world, including those in Hunan province. The towering Bailong Elevator, literally 'hundred dragons sky lift', was opened to the public in 2002. At 326 m (1,070 ft), it is the world's tallest outdoor lift. It can transport visitors to the top from its foot in less than two minutes. The structure is composed of three separate glass elevators, each of which can carry up to 50 people at a time. In August 2016, Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon opened the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, the longest (430) and highest (300 m) pedestrian glass bridge in the world. Thirteen days after opening, the bridge was closed due to the sheer number of visitors. It reopened on the 30th of September 2016 after having adjusted the logistics and safety measures for handling large numbers of tourists.

Bailong Elevator

The Bailong Elevator (literally Hundred Dragons Elevator) is a glass elevator built onto the side of a huge cliff in the Wulingyuan area of Zhangjiajie, People's Republic of China that is 1,070 feet (330 m) high. It is claimed to be the highest and heaviest outdoor elevator in the world. Construction of the elevator began in October 1999, and it was opened to the public by 2002. The environmental effects of the elevator have been a subject of debate and controversy, as the Wulingyan area was designated a World Heritage Site in 2002. Operations were stopped for 10 months in 2002-2003, reportedly due to safety concerns, not environmental ones. On 16 July 2015, the elevator was officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s tallest outdoor lift.

Huanglong Cave

Huanglong Cave is a karst cave located near the Wulingyuan district of Zhangjiajie City, Hunan, People's Republic of China and a national 4A rated scenic area. As of 2010, the cave has over a million visitors per year. Since 1997, the Huanglong Cave scenic area has been managed by Beijing-based China Datong Co. Ltd. It was previously managed directly by the Hunan provincial government. In addition to the cave itself the Huanglong Cave scenic area includes Huanglong Cave Ecology Square completed in 2009 by restoring the landscape of the area adjacent to the cave entrance. In 2010, the Zhangjiajie government ordered the construction of the "Hallelujah Concert Hall" as the centerpiece to the Ecology Square, not far from the cave entrance. The hall has a grass-planted roof and cost 160 million Chinese yuan.

Tianmen Mountain

Tianmen Mountain is a mountain located within Tianmen Mountain National Park, Zhangjiajie, in northwestern Hunan Province, China. A cablecar was constructed by the French company Poma from nearby Zhangjiajie railway station to the top of the mountain. Tianmen Mountain Cableway is claimed in tourist publications as the "longest passenger cableway of high mountains in the world", with 98 cars and a total length of 7,455 metres and ascent of 1,279 metres The highest gradient is an unusual 37 degrees. Tourists can walk on kilometres of paths built onto the cliff face at the top of the mountain, including sections with glass floors. An 11 kilometres road with 99 bends also reaches the top of the mountain and takes visitors to Tianmen cave, a natural hole in the mountain of a height of 131.5 metres . A large temple is also located on the summit with chairlift or footpath access. The original temple here was built in the Tang Dynasty. Today a more recent construction with Tang dynasty architecture occupies the site and includes a vegetarian restaurant in the 10000 sq mi of setting. On September 25, 2011 Jeb Corliss glided through the 100 feet wide archway in the mountain using a wingsuit. The flight began from a helicopter at 6,000 feet , and ended with a safe landing on a nearby bridge. The World Wingsuit League held the first and second World Wingsuit Championships in Tianmen. On October 8, 2013, during a training jump for the second world championships, Viktor Kováts plunged to his death when he was unable to open his parachute.

Avatar Hallelujah Mountain

Avatar Hallelujah Mountain (simplified Chinese: 阿凡达-哈利路亚山; traditional Chinese: 阿凡達-哈利路亞山; pinyin: Āfándá hālìlùyà shān) is a mountain, a 1,080 metres (3,540 feet) quartz-sandstone pillar, located in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, in the Wulingyuan Area, in northwestern Hunan Province, China. It was renamed to its present name in January 2010 for having served as inspiration for the "Hallelujah Mountains" in the film Avatar, as well as to show appreciation to the social message present therein. Changsha Ferris Wheel

Changsha Ferris Wheel is a 120-metre tall giant Ferris wheel in Changsha, Hunan, China. It is adjacent to Helong Stadium. It was completed on September 30, 2004, and officially opened to the public on October 1, 2004. It has a diameter of 99 metres . Changsha Ferris Wheel is one of four 120 m Ferris wheels in China, the other three being Suzhou Ferris WheelTianjin Eyeand Zhengzhou Ferris Wheel . The only Chinese Ferris wheel with a greater height is the 160-metre Star of Nanchang, which opened in 2006.

Sky City

Sky City, or Sky City One, is an 838-metre-tall planned skyscraper in the city of Changsha, Hunan in south-central China. The prospective builders, Broad Sustainable Building, estimated it would take just 90 days to construct. Including the 120 days required for prefabrication before on-site work commences, the sum of time needed is 210 days. Pre-construction activities were halted in August 2013 after government regulators required additional approvals. Broad Sustainable Building had intended to build a 666-metre skyscraper, but the local government wanted the worlds tallest building, hence the current plans. The company has constructed 20 buildings in China using the same method and has several franchise partners globally. It has a planned helipad at a height of 739.8 m above ground.

Aizhai Bridge

The Aizhai Bridge is a suspension bridge on the G65 Baotou–Maoming Expressway near Jishou, Hunan, China. The bridge was built as part of an expressway from southwest Chinas Chongqing Municipality to Changsha. With a main span of 1,146 metres and a deck height of 336 metres, as of 2013, it is the seventh-highest bridge in the world and the worlds fifteenth-longest suspension bridge. Of the worlds 400 or so highest bridges, none has a main span as long as Aizhai. It is also the worlds highest and longest tunnel-to-tunnel bridge. The bridge contains 1888 lights to increase visibility at night. Construction on the Aizhai Bridge began in October 2007 and was completed by the end of 2011, ahead of schedule. The bridge was temporarily opened to pedestrians during the 2012 Spring Festival and was formally opened to traffic in March 2012. The bridge was built with the assistance of a $208 million loan from the Asian Development Bank; the total project cost was $610 million, which included 64 kilometres of expressway construction and upgrades to 129 kilometres of local roads. The bridge and the associated road construction were projected to reduce the travel time between Jishou and Chadong from 4 hours to less than 1 hour. In September 2012, the Aizhai Bridge was the site of an international BASE jumping festival that included more than 40 jumpers from 13 countries.

Zhuzhou Television Tower is a 293-metre tall free standing telecommunications tower in Zhuzhou, China. It is the ninth tallest tower in China, and the second tallest steel tower. It features a revolving restaurant and open-air observation deck. It broadcasts five television and two radio channels.

The Jingyue Yangtze River Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Yangtze River between Jianli County, Hubei Province and Yueyang, Hunan Province in central China. The Bridge opened in June 2010. The bridge crosses the Yangtze River and is one of the 10 largest cable-stayed bridges in the world. The bridge was tolled a few months after opening.

Mount Heng

Mount Heng, also known as Nan Yue, is located in Hunan and is one of the Five Great Mountains in China. Heng Shan is a mountain range 150 kilometres long with 72 peaks and lies at 27.254798°N and 112.655743°E. The Huiyan Peak is the south end of the peaks, Yuelu Mountain in Changsha City is the north end, and the Zhurong Peak is the highest at 1,300.2 metres above sea level. At the foot of the mountain stands the largest temple in southern China, the Grand Temple of Mount Heng, which is the largest group of ancient buildings in Hunan Province. Other notable sites in the area include the Zhusheng Si Temple, an 8th-century Buddhist monastery and Zhurong Gong, a small stone temple.

Yuelu Mountain

Mount Yuelu is located on the west bank of Xiang River in Changsha, Hunan, China. Its main peak and the highest point, Yunlu Peak, is about 300 meters above the sea level. Mount Yuelu is noted for its many scenic spots, including Qingfeng Gorge, Aiwan Pavilion, Lushan Temple, Yunlu Palace, the White Crane Spring and the Flying Stone. Qingfeng Gorge lies in the low area between Yuelu Academy and Lushan Temple. It holds Aiwan Pavilion, one of four famous pavilions in ancient China, the Sheli Tower, and the tombs of Huang Xing and Cai E . Aiwan Pavilion and was built in A.D.1792. Its original name is Red Leaf Pavilion, later changed based on a poem by Du Mu. Mao Zedong once played and studied here and the remaining tablet was written by Mao Zedong in the 1950s. Aiwan Pavilion is supported by four red poles. There is a tablet with the poem, "Qinyuanchun, Changsha" written by Mao Zedong. Lushan Temple is located on the side of the mountain. It was built in A.D.268 and later destroyed and rebuilt several times. It was last rebuilt in the 1980s. Yunlu Palace is a Taoist place. The history of Taoist activities in Mount Yuelu is quite long. Yunlu Palace was built in A.D.1478, and Mount Yuelu has been an active center since then. The Flying Clock and Flying Stone are also famous attractions in Mount Yuelu. The Flying Clock hangs in a ginkgo tree near Yunlu Palace. Flying Stone lies under the Flying Clock. The King Yu Tablet: On the Tablet there was carved an article with 77 Chinese characters, now difficult to distinguish. Under the Tablet is Yuji Brook. Yu was an ancient hero who conquered floods.

Fusi Mountain

Fusi Mountain is located in the southwestern part of Ningxiang County in central Hunan Province. It is a part of Xuefeng Mountains. The highest point of the mountain, the Jinfeng Temple, measures 410 metres in height. It is located in the center part of the mountain.

Yunlu Palace

Yunlu Palace is a Taoist temple located on the south side of Yuelu Mountain, in Yuelu District of Changsha, Hunan, China. It was originally built in 1478, but because of war has been rebuilt numerous times since then, with the last major one done in 1976.

Lishui River Bridge

The Lishui River Bridge is a suspension bridge near Zhangjiajie, in the Hunan Province of China. The bridge spans 856 m over the Lishui River gorge between the Yongding District and the Yongshun County. The bridge is part of an extension of the G5513 Changsha–Zhangjiajie Expressway to Huayuan that cut the 8 hour travel time between Zhangjiajie and Chongqing in half. With 330 m of clearance above the river the bridge is one of the worlds highest bridges.

Dongjiang Dam

The Dongjiang Dam is an arch dam on the Lishui River 14 km southwest of Zixing in Hunan Province, China. The dam was constructed between 1978 and 1992 and supports a 500 MW hydroelectric power station. The dam also provides for flood control, navigation and water supply. The dam's first generator was operational in 1987 and the reservoir, Dongjiang Lake, forced the relocation of 5.2 million people.

Fengtan Dam

The Fengtan Dam is an arch-gravity dam on the You River, located 48 km southeast of Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province, China. The purpose of the multi-purpose dam is flood control, irrigation, power generation and navigation. The dam has a power station with an installed capacity of 800 MW and provides water for the irrigation of 44 km2 . Construction on the dam began in 1970 and the first generator was operational in 1978. All four of the original generators were operational by 1979. A power plant expansion project began in 2001 and in 2004 two additional 200 MW generators were commissioned.

Yulongyan Dam

The Yulongyan Dam is an arch dam on the Gongxi River located 32 km east of Hongjiang in Hunan Province, China. The primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power generation but it also provides flood control and water for irrigation. Construction initially began in 1992 but work was halted due to a lack of funding. In 2003 construction began again and the dam was complete in 2005 with the power station commissioned in 2006. The 96 m tall dam creates a reservoir with a capacity of 57,800,000 cubic metres and its power station has an installed capacity of 25 MW.

Mawangdui

Mawangdui (Chinese: 馬(马)王堆; pinyin: Mǎwángduī; literally: "King Ma's Mound") is an archaeological site located in Changsha, China. The site consists of two saddle-shaped hills and contained the tombs of three people from the western Han dynasty (206 BC – 9 AD): Marquis Li Cang, his wife, and a male believed to have been their son. The site was excavated from 1972 to 1974. Most of the artifacts from Mawangdui are displayed at the Hunan Provincial Museum. It was called "King Ma's Mound" because it was initially (erroneously) thought to be the tomb of Ma Yin (853–930), a ruler of the Chu kingdom during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.

He Shuheng's Former Residence

The He Shuheng's Former Residence(Chinese: 何叔衡故居; pinyin: Hé Shūhéng Gùjū) is a museum and tourist attraction created from the house formerly owned by the Chinese communist revolutionary, He Shuheng. The house was built in the late Qing Dynasty and it is located in Shatian township in Ningxiang County of Changsha City in Hunan Province of the People's Republic of China.The building covers an area of about 2600 square meters.

Huangcai Reservoir

The Huangcai Reservoir is a large reservoir located in the northwestern part of Ningxiang County in the province of Hunan, Peoples Republic of China. It is the largest body of water in Ningxiang County and the largest reservoir in Ningxiang County. The reservoir is the source of the Wei River. It cost about RMB 5,393,300,000. Grand Temple of Mount Heng, or Grand Temple of South Mountain is located at the foot of Mount Heng, and on the north of ancient town of Mount Heng in Hengshan County of Hunan, China. It is the largest temple on Mount Heng. It is a major component of Mount Heng National Key Tourist Resort Zone.

Dongting Lake, or Lake Dongting is a large, shallow lake in northeastern Hunan province, China. It is a flood basin of the Yangtze River . Hence the lakes size depends on the season. The provinces of Hubei and Hunan are named after their location relative to the lake: Hubei means "North of the Lake" and Hunan means "South of the Lake" in Chinese. Dongting Lake is famous in Chinese culture as the place of origin of Dragon boat racing. It is the site of Junshan island, and is a home to the Finless Porpoise, which is endangered in China.
