Ancaster

Ancaster is a community located on the Niagara Escarpment that amalgamated with the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 2001. This former town was founded officially in 1793 and was one of the oldest European communities established in present-day Ontario along with Windsor , Kingston , St. Catharines , Grimsby , Niagara-on-the-Lake and Toronto . By 1823, due in large part to its easily accessible water power located at the juncture of already existing historical trading routes, Ancaster had become Upper Canada's largest industrial and commercial center. Additionally, Ancaster had at that time attracted the 2nd largest populace in Upper Canada trailing only Kingston , but surpassing the populations of nearby Toronto and Hamilton . After this initial period of prosperity beginning in the late 18th century, sudden significant water and rail transportation advancements of the early 19th century would soon better benefit Ancaster's neighbouring towns situated closer to the Lake Ontario waterfront. Stationary steam engines for industries were also being rapidly developed in the 19th century that would eventually make Ancaster's water powered industries less vital. As a result, after the 1820s, Ancaster's influence during the remainder of the 19th century would begin to wane. From the late 19th century Ancaster's population would remain static until 1946 when new subdivisions around the village were established. The population expanded further with the completion of the Hamilton-Ancaster section of Highway 403 in 1968 and the introduction of sewer systems in 1974. After 1970, its population essentially doubled from 15,000 residents to its present-day 33,000.

Flamborough

Flamborough (sometimes both officially and informally spelled Flamboro) is a former town near, and a current community in, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. For most of its existence before amalgamation with Hamilton in 2001, Flamborough comprised the former townships of East Flamborough, West Flamborough, and Beverly, as well as the village of Waterdown. The largest suburban community is the former village of Waterdown containing perhaps one third of its thirty thousand or so inhabitants. The historic area, known as the "Old Town", exists below the Niagara Escarpment. In 1984 Stoney Creek became a city. Dundas is a formerly independent town and now constituent community in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It is nicknamed the Valley Town because of its topographical location at the bottom of the Niagara Escarpment on the Western edge of Lake Ontario. The population has been stable for decades at about twenty thousand, largely because it has not annexed rural land from the protected Dundas Valley Conservation Area. Notable events are the Buskerfest in early June, and the Dundas Cactus Festival in August.

African Lion Safari

African Lion Safari is a family-owned safari park situated in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, about 100 kilometres west of Toronto. Though situated in Hamilton city limits, it is located near Cambridge, Ontario. It includes more than 1,000 animals, representing over 100 species of mammals and birds from across the globe. Guests may tour seven game reserves traversed via tour buses or the visitors own vehicles where animals roam freely in large contained areas. Accompanying the game reserves is a large walking section where hundreds of exotic birds and primates, as well as the parks herd of Asian elephants, are on display. It is an accredited member of the CAZA, and is also a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the International Elephant Foundation as well as the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators . It is open from the first weekend in May to the weekend of Canadian Thanksgiving in October and has an on-site bus in which to tour the park, but public transportation to the park itself is limited.

Dundurn Castle

Dundurn Castle is a historic neoclassical mansion on York Boulevard in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The 18,000-square-foot house took three years and $175,000.00 to build, and was completed in 1835. The seventy-two room castle featured the latest conveniences of gas lighting and running water. It is currently owned by the City of Hamilton, which purchased it in 1900 for $50,000. The City has spent nearly $3 million renovating the site to make 42 of the original 72 rooms open to the public. The rooms have been restored to the year 1855 when its owner Sir Allan Napier MacNab, 1st Baronet, was at the height of his career. Costumed interpreters guide visitors through the home, illustrating daily life from the 1850s. The Duchess of Cornwall, a descendant of Sir Allan MacNab, is the Royal Patron of Dundurn Castle.

With cascade falls the downpour is staggered into a series of steps causing water to "cascade". The top of the falls are located on Mud Street. The lower-end of the falls can be found at the south-end of Kings Forest Park in lower Hamilton by following the Red Hill Creek south towards the Niagara Escarpment. Albion Falls was once seriously considered as a possible source of water for Hamilton. Rocks from the Albion Falls area were used in the construction of the Royal Botanical Gardens Rock Garden. The ravine at the Albion Falls has a legend of the Lovers Leap. The story is that early in the 19th century young Jane Riley, disappointed in love with Joseph Rousseau, stood at the top of a steep cliff not far from thundering Albion Falls and flung herself to the bottom 100 ft below. The steep drop has since been dubbed "Lovers Leap" and many tales have grown up about the suicide. Tiffany Falls

Tiffany Falls is a 21 metre high ribbon waterfall located in the Tiffany Falls Conservation Area, just off of Wilson Street East, Ancaster, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Tiffany Falls was named after Dr. Oliver Tiffany, the districts first doctor. Born in Massachusetts, he studied medicine at the Philadelphia Medical College, and came to Ancaster Township in 1796. Best viewed in the early spring as it tends to dry up in the summer months. Used for ice-climbing in the winter months with permission from the Hamilton Conservation Authority. HMCS Haida

HMCS Haida is a Tribal-class destroyer that served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1943 to 1963. Haida sank more enemy surface tonnage than any other Canadian warship. She is also the only surviving Tribal-class destroyer out of 27 vessels that were constructed between 1937 and 1945 for the Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy, and the RCN. She now serves as a museum ship on the waterfront of Hamilton, Ontario, and was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1984.

Whitehern

Whitehern Historic House and Garden in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, built shortly before 1850, is a Late Classical house that is now a historic house museum. At one time, Whitehern was the home of Thomas McQuesten. His historic downtown family home was willed to the City of Hamilton, after the death of the last of his five unmarried siblings in 1968. It is situated on the corner of Jackson Street West and MacNab Street South, just east of the Hamilton City Hall and behind the Canadian Football Hall of Fame museum. After its restoration was complete in 1971, Whitehern has been open as a civic museum and has occasionally served as a period film location. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1962. An Ontario Historical Plaque was erected by the province to commemorate Whiteherns role in Ontarios heritage. Among the many Hamilton civic leaders and boosters, McQuesten helped encourage McMaster University to relocate from downtown Toronto to west Hamilton in 1930, and was instrumental in the creation of the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King

Bishop Anthony Tonnos, bishop of the diocese of Hamilton, officially retired on Nov. 8th, 2010, the date of the installation of Bishop Crosby. He had served as bishop for a total of 27 years in the diocese. Retired auxiliary bishop Matthew Ustrzycki, still continues to be active in the diocese along with Bishop emeritis Tonnos. Former auxiliary bishop Gerard Bergie has been named bishop of St. Catharines, Ontario. A new auxiliary bishop of Hamilton has been appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in the person of Fr. Daniel Miehm. The cathedral was raised to the status of a minor basilica on February 2013 by Pope Benedict XVI. On the south side of the bell tower, is the cornerstone blessed by Bishop McNally, builder of the Cathedral and fifth bishop of the diocese. It is a stone excavated from the Roman Catacombs to symbolize the cathedrals unity with the ancient Christian church, the first generation after Christ.

Auchmar

Auchmar House is the centrepiece of Clairmont Park, the estate of the Honourable Isaac Buchanan , one of Hamilton's most influential citizens. It was built between 1852 and 1854 and is located at the northeast corner of Fennell Avenue and West 5th. The manor house, its several remaining outbuildings, and stone orchard wall occupy about 8 acres of land which include most of the original built features of the estate. However, the tiny Gatekeeper's Lodge, which resembles Auchmar House architecturally, became detached from the remainder of Clairmont Park. (It is located on the mountain brow at 71 Claremont Drive.) Auchmar House and the remaining contiguous portion of the Buchanan estate is a unique heritage asset owned by the citizens of Hamilton and is recognized by the Ontario Heritage Trust as having significant historical value. Auchmar House is recognized as an outstanding example of the domestic Gothic Revival and with its surrounding acreage, is a very rare example of a mid-Victorian estate in Ontario which survives in relatively intact condition. Isaac Buchanan served in the Parliament of the United Province of Canada as member for Toronto from 1841 to 1843 and member for Hamilton between 1857 and 1865. Between March and June, 1865 he held the office of President of the Council in the ministry headed by Etienne Tache and John A. Macdonald. His public involvements were diverse and included founding roles in both the Hamilton Board of Trade and the Toronto Board of Trade. Buchanan was an international merchant, first president of the Hamilton Club, and founder of the Thirteenth Battalion, a regiment which would later become the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. With Sir Allan MacNab, Bart. (1798-1862) and his elder brother Peter Buchanan (1806-1860), Isaac Buchanan played a key role in the establishment of the Great Western Railroad, which commenced operation in 1854 as the first major railroad in the United Province of Canada. In addition to his parliamentary career and involvement with numerous public and private bodies, Buchanan became a writer of some note on the subjects of currency and trade and is generally credited as being a formative influence on John A. Macdonald's National Policy.

Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is a Canadian aviation museum located at the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport in Hamilton, Ontario. The museum has 36 military jets, propeller-driven aircraft and helicopters on display. Displayed is a collection of Canadian military aircraft, many in flying condition. The museum is also restoring several Second World War and Cold War aircraft, including a TBM Avenger a De Havilland Canada built S-2 Tracker and a Bristol Bolingbroke. The flying collection performs at air shows and is made available for local flights by museum visitors. The Avro Lancaster flown by the museum is one of only two airworthy Lancasters in the world. Known as the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster in honour of Pilot Officer Andrew Charles Mynarski, it is painted in the markings of his aircraft. An Ontario Historical Plaque near the entrance commemorates Eileen Vollicks role in Ontarios heritage as Canadas first licensed female pilot.

Canadian Football Hall of Fame

The Canadian Football Hall of Fame is a not-for-profit corporation, located in Hamilton, Ontario, that celebrates great achievements in Canadian football. It is an open to the public institution. It includes displays about the Canadian Football League, Canadian university football and Canadian junior football history. It includes a gift shop and the Hall recently opened a website. The main feature of the Hall is the central portion of the museum where inducted members, each with a metal bust depicting their head, are displayed. There are also featured displays that highlight each Canadian Football League teams history, and an interactive field goal kicking exhibit. Once during every CFL season, the Hall sponsors the induction ceremony of former players. Included in the "Hall of Fame Weekend" is a regular season game, usually affiliated with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Traditionally, the inducted players will come to the Hall and make an acceptance speech in front of the building where their newly sculpted bust is unveiled. A player must be retired from the game for at least three years before being eligible for consideration. A Hall of Fame voting committee is composed of sports writers, selected CFL executives and inducted members.

Griffin House

Griffin House is a house built in 1827 by Englishmen in Ancaster. It was purchased by an African-American escaped slave in 1834 who also had enough cash to purchase 50 acres. It offers Underground Railroad tours and history-related programs. Griffin House was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada in 2008. The house is a rare surviving example of a four-room house typical in Upper Canada in the early 19th century. It was owned by Enerals Griffin, an African American guest worker from Virginia who escaped to Canada in 1834. For the next 150 years, their descendents lived and farmed here atop a hill in peace. The property was sold to the Hamilton Region Conservation Authority in 1988. Public visitation and interpretation is offered by Fieldcote Memorial Park and Museum.

Dundas Valley Conservation Area

The park features a multi-use asphalt trail, 349 metres in length and 4 metres wide which provides barrier-free access to all areas of the park and linkages with the surrounding harbourfront precinct. A total of $2.2 million has been invested for the redevelopment of the park which includes a 24 metre tugboat which acts as the centrepiece of an interactive water play area for children. A dramatically curved lookout pier includes a protected sun shelter and benches to view the marinas, parkland and vistas of the surrounding Bay. In addition Hamilton Harbour Commissioners have constructed Hamilton Pier which provides 0.4 hectares of additional parkland and fish habitat. Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium

Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium is a stadium on Upper Kenilworth Avenue in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Located in Mohawk Sports Park, it is primarily used for baseball and was once the home of the minor league Hamilton Redbirds of the New York Penn League. Built in 1970 when Civic Stadium was renovated to football only, it is named for former Hamilton police sergeant Bernie Arbour, who was the director of Hamilton youth baseball from 1948 to his death in 1967.
