Bob Marshall Wilderness

The Bob Marshall Wilderness Area is a Congressionally designated wilderness area located in western Montana in the United States. It is named after Bob Marshall , an early forester, conservationist, and co-founder of The Wilderness Society. Bob Marshall was largely responsible for designation of large unroaded areas on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service through promulgation of various regulations in the 1930s. The Bob Marshall Wilderness extends for 60 miles along the Continental Divide and consists of 1,009,356 acres . As directed by the Wilderness Act of 1964, Wilderness remains roadless, with the only permanent structures being some old ranger stations and horse bridges. The Bob is the fifth-largest wilderness in the lower 48 states (after the Death Valley Wilderness, Frank Church—River of No Return Wilderness, Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness). The five ranger districts administering the Bob manage 1,856 miles (2,970 km) of trail that are open to foot and stock use only.

Flathead National Forest

The Flathead National Forest is a national forest in the western part of the U.S. state of Montana. The forest covers 2,404,935 acres of which about 1 million acres is designated wilderness. It is named after the Flathead Indians who lived in the area. The forest is located in the Rocky Mountains with elevations ranging from 4,500 to 8,500 feet . The Forest provides habitat for approximately 250 species of wildlife and 22 species of fish. This includes the threatened grizzly bear, lynx, bald eagle, bull trout, a rare plant named water howellia, and the endangered gray wolf. The Flathead National Forest is bordered by Glacier National Park and Canada to the north, the Lewis and Clark National Forest and Glacier to the east, the Lolo National Forest to the south, and the Kootenai National Forest to the west. The wilderness areas in the forest are the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area, Great Bear Wilderness Area, and Mission Mountains Wilderness Area. Other specially-designated areas in the forest include Flathead Wild and Scenic River, Jewel Basin Hiking Area, and the Coram Experimental Forest. Some 270,000 acres of non-federal land are also included in the boundaries drawn for the national forest. This includes private land, commercial forest and part or all of Swan River State Forest, Stillwater State Forest and Coal Creek State Forest. Commercial activities in the non-wilderness sections of the forest include timber harvesting, two downhill ski resorts and a small amount of cattle grazing. Individuals can pick less than 10 US gallons of berries without a permit. Larger amounts of berries, firewood and Christmas tree cutting, and mushroom or mineral gathering in wilderness areas require permits. The forest contains 1,700 miles of roads, many of them primitive fire roads and 2,800 miles of hiking trails. Approximately 38 miles of the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail are located within the Flathead National Forest. While camping is allowed almost anywhere within national forests without a permit, Flathead National Forest also has 34 campgrounds with some facilities. The largest campground has only 40 sites and 2 campgrounds have only one site each. Most campgrounds do not have running water. There are also 11 cabins for rent in the forest. The forest lies primarily in Flathead County (about 73% of its acreage), but smaller areas extend into five other counties. In descending order of land area they are Powell, Missoula, Lake, Lewis and Clark, and Lincoln counties. Forest headquarters are located in Kalispell, Montana. There are local ranger district offices in Bigfork, Hungry Horse, and Whitefish.

Great Bear Wilderness

The Great Bear Wilderness is located in northern Montana, United States, within Flathead National Forest Created by an act of Congress in 1978, the wilderness comprises 286,700 acres and borders the Bob Marshall Wilderness on the north. The Great Bear and Bob Marshall Wildernesses, along with the Scapegoat Wilderness which borders the Bob Marshall to the south, collectively form the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, which is over 1.5 million acres of almost untouched landscape. Glacier National Park is separated from the Great Bear Wilderness by U.S. Highway 2. U.S. Wilderness Areas do not allow motorized or mechanized vehicles, including bicycles. Although camping and fishing are allowed with proper permit, no roads or buildings are constructed and there is also no logging or mining, in compliance with the 1964 Wilderness Act. Wilderness areas within National Forests and Bureau of Land Management areas also allow hunting in season. The Great Bear is located west of the Continental Divide which forms the eastern boundary. Great Northern Mountain is the highest peak in the wilderness which is dominated by dozens of other mountains, all part of the Rocky Mountain Front, a huge overthrust fault that spans for 400 miles through Canada and Montana. Great Bear is the origination point of the wild and scenic designated Middle Fork of the Flathead River, which flows for 50 miles through the wilderness and is rarely visited. In the valleys a dense coniferous forest is dominated by various species of spruce, pine and fir. Living up to its name, the wilderness is prime grizzly bear habitat and has some of the most dense populations of the species anywhere in the lower 48 states. Black bears are more common however and there is a sizable number of black bears that are cinnamon colored here, which are often mistaken for grizzlies. Other mammals found in the wilderness include lynx, wolverine, mule deer, elk, moose, mountain goat, and bighorn sheep. There are few lakes in the wilderness, but over 500 miles of named streams and rivers. 300 miles of hiking trails exist in the wilderness, but many of them are poorly maintained. Much of the interior sections have no trails at all requiring travelers to have to bushwack. Visitors are urged when entering this remote landscape to be well versed in outdoor survival skills, have knowledge of the use of map and compass and to make sure someone knows where you're going and when you'll be back. Even on maintained trails frequent stream crossings are common and can be especially dangerous, particularly in the spring during snowmelt. For the most part, winter snows have completely melted by mid May, although higher terrain may continue to have small snowfields year round. Summertime brings pesky mosquitos and thunderstorms which often produce more lightning than rain. The winters are often bitter with deep snowfalls and frigid temperatures. This is a wilderness for the experienced adventurer but guided packtrips are available.

Northwest Montana Historical Society

The Museum at Central School, at the restored Central School building in Kalispell, Montana, USA, is a history museum featuring exhibits that illuminate the history of Northwest Montana. Operated by the non-profit Northwest Montana Historical Society, the Museum at Central School is housed in the 22,000-square-foot Richardsonian Romanesque-style four-story stone and brick Central School building, constructed in 1894 and completely restored and renovated in the late 1990s. Current permanent exhibits focus on Montana pioneer Frank Bird Linderman, the Northwest Montana timber industry, Northwest Native American culture, all new professionally designed and constructed History of the Flathead Valley installed and opened in July 2013, and the turn-of-the-century community of Demersville.

Montana Raceway Park

Montana Raceway Park is a motorsports facility located near Kalispell, Montana, in the state's Flathead Valley region. It features a 1/4-mile-long high-banked oval track paved with asphalt. Seating at the facility accommodates 4,000 spectators and parking areas can stage more than 100 race teams. The racetrack opened on May 1, 1991, as Raceway Park. During its first year, the facility also carried the names Kalispell Raceway Park and Flathead Valley Raceway Park. Weekly auto races and specialty events are currently the main uses for the facility. Drivers from the northwestern United States and Canada travel to Montana Raceway Park for the annual Coors Light Montana 200, a racing event hosted by the racetrack each year since the track opened. Typically, a field of approximately 40-50 drivers competes for the 24 positions available in the race, which has yielded more than $50,000 in prize money during past years. Other racing at the track includes the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, Canadian Super Truck Racing Series and local divisions of Super Late Models, Super Stocks, Bombers, Hobby Stocks, Hornets, Legends, and Bandoleros. Beyond racing, the facility hosts other sports competitions and music performances. Foghat, Blue Öyster Cult, Eddie Money, and Alice Cooper have entertained crowds at the racetrack. Charlotte Motor Speedway and racetrack manager Humpy Wheeler presented their 2007 Promoter of the Year award to the staff and management of Montana Raceway Park.
