Top Attractions in San Angelo

Fort Concho

Fort Concho is a National Historic Landmark owned and operated since 1935 by the city of San Angelo, the seat of Tom Green County in West Texas. Situated on the North Concho River, near its confluence with the South and Middle Concho Rivers, the site selected for Fort Concho was strategic to the stabilization of the region, because of the location of no fewer than five major trails in the vicinity. Though the fort was surrounded by miles of flat, treeless prairie, it was considered to be “one of the most beautiful and best ordered posts in Texas." Other forts in the frontier fort system were Forts Griffin, Richardson, Belknap, Chadbourne, Stockton, Davis, Bliss, McKavett, Clark, McIntosh, Inge, and Phantom Hill in Texas, and Fort Sill in Oklahoma. "Sub posts or intermediate stations" were also used, including Bothwicks Station on Salt Creek between Fort Richardson and Fort Belknap, Camp Wichita near Buffalo Springs between Fort Richardson and Red River Station, and Mountain Pass between Fort Concho and Fort Griffin.

Junell Center

The Junell Center is a 6,500 seat multi-purpose arena in San Angelo, Texas. It was built in 2001. It is the home of the Angelo State University Rams Ram Belles basketball teams and the Ram Belles volleyball team. It features a 9x12 foot video screen and an Honors Lounge housed in the Junell Center, overlooking the Stephens Arena floor. A Hall of Fame concourse heralds the accomplishments of ASU athletes through the ages. In addition to athletics it features speaking engagements, distinguished lecture series, cultural programs, exhibitions as many community activities that are staged in this facility. Angelo State frequently holds concerts at the arena. Groups that have played there include Maroon 5, Baby Bash, Miranda Lambert, Hoobastank, Lostprophets, Chingy and Dierks Bentley.

LeGrand Sports Complex

The LeGrand Sports Complex is a Track and Field complex at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. The complex has seating for 3,000 people. It is home to the Angelo State University Track and Field teams and the Angelo State Rams football team. It features a 400-meter all-weather track with 200-meter straightaway, throwing and jumping areas and full press box facilities. The complex is lighted for evening and night events and features a Daktronics scoreboard specifically designed for track and field with a clock display and 11 ft. video display. The facility is one of the premier track and field complexes in DII athletics. Because of this it has hosted the DII National Championships on five occasions including 1988, 1991, 1992, 2002 and 2009. On October 1, 2008 the Texas Tech University System regents voted to rename the Multi-Sports Complex to the LeGrand Sports Complex in recognition of Dr. Robert and Jean Ann LeGrand’s support of Angelo State University. Dr. Robert LeGrand, a San Angelo Neurosurgeon, and Jean Ann LeGrand an ASU graduate have donated over 2.7 million to Angelo State University including a 200K donation to update the Sports Complex in preparation for the 2011 DII National Track and Field Championships. In June 2013 a $1.2 million construction project began to move the javelin runway to the upper field and the long jump and pole vault runways and pits outside of the track surface in order to install artificial synthetic turf on the playing field. The fields main purpose will be to improve the practice field for the Ram football team but also be used by various other teams and intramural sports. The field will be named for 1st Community Credit Union who paid for the majority of the privately funded project.

Houston Harte University Center

The Houston Harte University Center serves the recreational and community needs of students at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, U.S. The center was named for Houston Harte, founder of the Harte-Hanks media company and a contributor to the university. It measures over 110,000 sq. ft. making it one of the larger student centers in the country. The center is ranked 22nd nationally in the "The 25 Most Amazing Campus Student Unions" rankings by Best College Reviews. The center houses the Student Life Office, the Center for Student Involvement, the campus bookstore, Student Senate offices, the C.J. Davidson Conference Center and the Student Credit Union. For student recreation, it offers multiple pool tables, ping pong tables, air hockey tables, as well as multiple large flat screen plasma televisions equipped with Xbox 360 game consoles and a 12-foot projection screen for student use. In addition to the Main University Food Center the University Center snack bar features pizza, Chinese cuisine, breakfast burritos, and American grill food stands, as well as Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, and Blimpie Subs and Salads.

Foster Field

Foster Field is a baseball stadium in San Angelo, Texas. It was built in 2000 for the San Angelo Colts and the Angelo State University Rams. The Colts played in United League Baseball and were the primary tenants. The Angelo State University Rams Baseball team is the now the main tenant in the facility. The stadium is located on the campus of Angelo State University. The stadium can seat 4,200 fans. Foster Field, originally named Colts Stadium, cost $3 million to construct and was built by Jim Anglea, the former head groundskeeper for the Ballpark at Arlington. It was named after Walton A. Foster, a radio and television pioneer who also served as the radio broadcaster for the original Colts franchise in the 1950s. The field features 4,200 permanent seats and a Triple-A lighting system. It features a 82-foot-wide, 21-foot-high LED scoreboard. The scoreboard includes a 15 3/4-foot-tall, 21-foot-wide high-definition video screen. Both the scoreboard and the video screen are the largest in all facilities used in the United League and all DII Baseball. In addition, the facility has a large press box area, major-league style dugouts and a complete training and locker room facility. The field also has state-of-the-art bullpens and batting cages for practice and warmup. There are also concession and restroom areas and special clubhouse-style seating areas for entertaining corporate sponsors located on either side of the press box. The field is covered by Tif 419 grass, an elite grass designed and genetically-engineered especially for ballparks. The field dimensions are 325 feet down the lines, 370 feet to the gaps and 395 feet to deep center field.

Angelo State University College of Education

The Angelo State University College of Education is a college at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Three departments are housed within the college: the Department of Kinesiology, the Department of Teacher Education, and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The Department of Kinesiology offers programs for a variety of careers. Degrees are offered in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, All-Level Physical Education Certification, Athletic Training, and Pre-Physical Therapy. Angelo State University graduates more head high school coaches in the state than any other University, regardless of size. It also offers the second largest coaches clinic in the nation The Departments of Teacher Education and Curriculum and Instruction offer programs leading to teacher certification at the elementary, middle-school, and high school level. Professional programs at the Master's Degree level help prepare school personnel for professional non-teaching positions throughout a public school system.
