Kanapaha Botanical Gardens

The Kanapaha Botanical Gardens is a botanical garden in Gainesville, Florida, operated by the North Florida Botanical Society. Their name comes from nearby Lake Kanapaha. The gardens were established in 1978 when the society leased 33 acres for a public botanical garden. Another 29 acres were added in 1982. The gardens opened to the public in 1986. As of 2005, the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens contain Floridas largest public bamboo gardens and the largest herb garden in the Southeast. Morningside Nature Center

The Morningside Nature Center is a living history site and nature education program located in Gainesville, Alachua County in the U.S. state of Florida and overseen by the city of Gainesville. The center maintains a small farm meant to simulate a North Florida family homestead from the mid-1800s. The farm includes a cabin and schoolhouse which were built in the 1840s and later moved to the site, along with newer farm buildings constructed as authentically as possible. On most weekends, volunteers dress in period attire and teach visitors about rural life in historical Alachua County. Apart from the farm, Morningside Nature Center also has an covered open air pavilion which is used for environmental education sessions for students on field trips and summer camps and for various other events. Much of the rest of the parks 278 acres consist of pine and palmetto flatwoods and Florida sandhills traversed by trails and paths. Controlled burns are conducted in the wooded areas to maintain the natural ecosystems.

Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art

The Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art is an art museum at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. It is in the UF Cultural Plaza area in the southwest part of campus. One of the largest university art museums in the Southeast, the Harn has more than 6200 works in its permanent collection and an array of temporary exhibitions. The museums permanent collections are focused on Asian, African, modern and contemporary art, as well as photography. The museum sponsors international and Florida-centric exhibitions. The university sponsors educational programs at the museum including films, lectures, interactive activities, and school and family offerings. In October 2005 the Harn expanded by more than 18,000 square feet with the opening of the Mary Ann Harn Cofrin Pavilion, which includes new educational and meeting areas and the Camellia Court Cafe, the first eatery for visitors of the Cultural Plaza. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. UF offers a virtual tour for prospective visitors.

Hotel Thomas

The Hotel Thomas, also known as Sunkist Villa but currently known as the Thomas Center, is an historic building in Gainesville, Florida, United States. It is located on the block bounded by Northeast 2nd and 5th Streets and Northeast 6th and 7th Avenues. It was built starting in 1910 in the Classical Revival style by noted Atlanta-based architect, William Augustus Edwards, designer of academic buildings at 12 institutions in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, including the original University of Florida campus, as well as a dozen or more county courthouses in those states plus other building and houses, The building began as the private home of William Reuben Thomas, his wife Kathryn, and their five children. In 1928 Thomas more than doubled the size of the home and converted it to a hotel. On July 16, 1973, the building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Thomas Center celebrated its 100th anniversary on February 12, 2010.

Haile Homestead

The Haile Homestead, also known as Haile Plantation House or Kanapaha, is a historic site and museum in Gainesville, Florida, United States. It is located at 8500 SR 24. On May 2, 1986, the house was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Officially known as Historic Haile Homestead at Kanapaha Plantation, the house was built for Thomas Evans and Serena Chesnut Haile in 1856 as part of their original 1,500-acre cotton plantation. The house is noted for the writings on its walls by members of the family. The museum is open for tours on weekends.

Matheson House

It was the home of eight-term mayor Chris Matheson, who was also a state legislator. The building is now part of the Matheson Museum, which recounts the history of Alachua County. Florida Gymnasium

Florida Gymnasium is a historic building located on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Design work was begun by university architect Rudolph Weaver during World War II and completed by his successor Guy Fulton. It replaced the old University Gymnasium built in 1915, which then became the Women's Gymnasium. Florida Gym opened in 1949 as a 7,000-seat multi-purpose arena that was home to the Florida Gators men's basketball team until it was replaced by the Stephen C. O'Connell Center as the university's indoor sports area in 1980. While serving as the home court of the Gators basketball team, it was also known as "Alligator Alley." Florida Gymnasium was adapted to other uses after the O'Connell Center was completed In the mid-1990s, the last remains of the original seating sections were removed and replaced with classrooms for the College of Health and Human Performance during a major renovation of the facility. The playing surface remains, and is used for student recreation and other purposes. In 2008, Florida Gymnasium became a contributing property in the University of Florida Campus Historic District which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 20, 1989.

Constans Theatre

The Constans Theatre is a performing arts venue located on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida. The facility first opened in 1967, and currently serves as a venue for musical concerts, theater, dance, and lectures. The facility, upon completion, was named for Henry Philip Constans, the founder of the Florida Players (originally called the dramatic club of the University of Florida). He also headed the Department of Speech from 1931 to 1967 during which time he had the responsibility for the Florida Players both in advisory and directing capacities. Professor Constans and several other speech department faculty members served as directors of various plays presented by the student organization. Management of the Florida Players shifted from the Department of Speech to the Theatre Department when this department was created in 1971. Facility History Renovated in 2004 and adjacent to the Reitz Union, the H. Philip Constans Theatre houses a 415-seat proscenium used as the main stage and primary producing space. The venue is located on McCarty Drive, and is adjacent to the J. Wayne Reitz Union. Constans Theatre is a sub-venue of the Nadine McGuire Pavilion and Dance Pavilion, and is part of the School of Theatre and Dance.

It was designed by Rudolph Weaver in the Collegiate Gothic style, was built in 1938 and was named for Duncan U. Fletcher, longtime U.S. Senator from Florida. It was renovated in 1984. Carleton Auditorium

The William G. Carleton Auditorium, built in 1954, is a historic building on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, in the United States. Like several other buildings on campus, it was designed by architect Guy Fulton in an early campus Brutalist style, and it is joined to Walker Hall by a breezeway. It seats 680 and was used as a lecture hall for the University College (predecessor to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences). In 1970, it was renamed for William G. Carleton, longtime professor of history and social sciences known for the colorful presentation of his freshman "American Institutions" lectures. In 2008 Carleton Auditorium became a contributing property in the University of Florida Campus Historic District which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 20, 1989.

In 2008 Matherly Hall became a contributing property in the University of Florida Campus Historic District which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 20, 1989.

Murphree Hall

Murphree Hall is a historic student residence building located in the Murphree Area on the northern edge of the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida. It was designed by architect Rudolph Weaver in the Collegiate Gothic style and completed in 1939. The building was named for Albert A. Murphree, the university's second president, who served from 1909 to 1927. Major renovations, which included adding air conditioning, were completed in 2005, and the hall was rededicated and open for that fall semester. Murphree Hall is a contributing property in the University of Florida Campus Historic District which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 20, 1989.

Tigert Hall

Tigert Hall, built in the late 1940s and early 1950s, is a historic administrative building located on the eastern edge of the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida. It was designed by architect Jefferson Hamilton in a modified Collegiate Gothic style to function as the university's main administration building. In 1960, it was renamed for John J. Tigert, the university's third president, who served from 1928 to 1947. Tigert Hall faces S.W. Thirteenth Street , one of the major public roads adjoining the university's campus. Tigert Hall became a contributing property in the University of Florida Campus Historic District in 2008; the historic district had been previously added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 20, 1989.

Walker Hall is a contributing property in the University of Florida Campus Historic District which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 20, 1989.

Hippodrome State Theatre

The Hippodrome Theatre (often referred to by residents as the Hipp) is a regional professional theatre in downtown Gainesville, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1973 by local actors. The address is 25 Southeast 2nd Place. The interior is in good condition, maintaining much of the original walls, doors and beams from its post office and courthouse era. It is a relatively small location, with a 268-seat thrust stage main stage theater on the second floor and 80-seat cinema space on the first floor. The Hippodrome building also has one of the oldest working elevators in Florida which requires the operator to manually close the screen, the door, and then pull a crank to operate. The Hippodrome uses professional actors and has its own set designers, costume designers, sound engineers and lighting engineers for each of its main stage productions. It also provides youth theater education classes. The Hippodrome features Broadway and off Broadway productions and art house films. The Hippodrome provides arts education for all ages, including classes & camps, in-school programs, workshops and behind-the-scenes opportunities for adults.

A. Quinn Jones House

The A. Quinn Jones House is a historic residence in Gainesville, Florida. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 27, 2010. The house is located at 1013 NW. 7th Avenue. The home is now a museum honoring A. Quinn Jones who in 1923 became the first principal of Lincoln High School . He developed the school into the second fully accredited African-American high school in the state of Florida.

Baughman Center

The Baughman Center consists of two buildings located along Lake Alice on the University of Florida campus. The main building is a 1,500-square-foot nondenominational chapel or pavilion, while the other one is an 1,000-square-foot administrative building. The chapel has seating for 96 people and is used for silent meditation, private contemplation, weddings, funerals and memorial services as well as a venue for small musical or performing arts events. The center, named after Dr. George F. Baughman and his wife, Hazel Baughman, the benefactors of the project and is considered an oasis of calm and beauty on the bustling campus. On April 18, 2012, the American Institute of Architects's Florida Chapter ranked the Baughman Center third on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places.
