Pennsylvania Canal

The Delaware Division of the Pennsylvania Canal, more commonly called the Delaware Canal, runs from the Lehigh River at Easton south to Bristol. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania built the Delaware canal as part of its Main Line of Internal Improvements to carry anthracite coal, limestone, cement, and lumber from the northeastern reaches of Pennsylvania to Philadelphia. The Pennsylvania Canal system was spurred by the early success of the Erie Canal in New York State, which had opened in 1825. First opened in 1832, it still has most of its original locks, aqueducts, and overflows. According to the National Park Service, it was the "longest-lived canal in the country". The canal runs parallel to the Delaware River from Easton, Pennsylvania where over the years, it was fed millions of tons of anthracite from the privately developed Lehigh Canal to transport them to the city and port of Philadelphia; the canals line of travel is generally within sight of the river.

Kirby Sports Center

Kirby Sports Center is a 3,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Easton, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1973 and is home to the Lafayette College Leopards basketball team. It hosted the 2000 Patriot League men's basketball tournament. Dedicated on June 2, 2000, the $35 million Allan P. Kirby Sports Center includes a new, 110,000-square-foot intramural and recreational sports facility attached to the previously existing Kirby Field House. The field house itself received a $2.5 million facelift and interior renovations. The new portion of the center, featuring a distinctive atrium overlooking Fisher Field, includes the Kamine Gymnasium, which includes three 50-by-84-foot courts for basketball, floor hockey, and other sports and an elevated 1/10-mile jogging track. The Buck Courts include six courts for racquet sports, two for squash and four that can be configured for squash or racquetball. A 6,600-square-foot fitness center and weight room includes a full strength-training circuit, spacious free-weight area, and more than 30 cardiovascular machines. There is also a 35-foot climbing wall, an aerobics area, and several offices. Built in 1973, the original field house, which contains Ruef Natatorium, is home to several varsity sports teams. It has been enhanced to include a new sports medicine area and a new equipment room and renovated locker rooms and administrative offices. The lobby and Athletic Hall of Fame exhibitry have been modernized. Major support for the sports center was provided by the F.M. Kirby Foundation, which made a $32.5 million gift to Lafayette, the largest gift ever received by a college, university, or other non-profit organization in the Lehigh Valley. The current director for the Kirby Sports Center is Jodie Frey who is also the Associate Dean of Students. The venue should not be confused with the F.M. Kirby Center, an arts and entertainment complex in Wilkes-Barre.

Fisher Field

The Fisher Stadium is a 13,132-seat multi-purpose stadium in Easton, Pennsylvania, United States. It opened in 1926 and it is home to the Lafayette College Leopards football team. Fisher Field, this past year, was voted the best gameday atmosphere in the Patriot League. A popular figure to Lafayette athletics is public-address announcer Jim Finnen. Finnen's silky smooth voice is famous, and just one of the many popular features of Fisher Field. During 2006 and 2007 Fisher Field underwent a $23-million renovation. It reopened in time for the 2006 college football season complete with new seating, JumboTron, a new press box, FieldTurf, and field lighting. Construction of a Football Varsity House beyond the western endzone commenced in Fall 2006 and was completed before the 2007 season. The renovations have made the stadium one of the best venues in all NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. On September 1, 2007, Lafayette opened its season hosting the first ever night football game at Fisher Field. Lafayette throttled Marist College of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference 49-10. The win was capped with a fireworks display.

College Hill Residential Historic District

College Hill is a residential neighborhood in Easton, Pennsylvania. The neighborhood is situated on a hill overlooking downtown Easton. Lafayette College borders the neighborhood on its southwest side. The northern boundary of the neighborhood is Forks Township. The boundary lies along Chestnut Ridge, a steep hill that rises to 700 feet. The neighborhood has 855 buildings, primarily built between 1830 and 1940. The district contains a mix of architectural styles, including Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Stick Style, Colonial Revival, Classical Revival, Tudor Revival, Dutch Colonial Revival, Georgian Revival, Foursquare, and Homestead Temple House. One notable building is McKelvy House designed in 1888 by McKim, Mead, and White. The building is currently owned by Lafayette College and used as a student residence. It was built John Eyerman, a Lafayette alumnus and faculty member, as a gift to his bride Lucy Maxwell. Specific properties on the National Register of Historic Places include 630 Weygadt Dr. Many College Hill residents are professors at Lafayette College. Generally, residents of College Hill are fairly wealthy and well educated.

Zeta Psi Fraternity House

Zeta Psi Fraternity House is a historic fraternity house located at Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The house was built by the Tau Chapter, Zeta Psi fraternity associated with Lafayette College. It was built in 1909-1910, and is a 2 1/2 story, nine bay wide, rock-faced granite building with a dormered hipped roof. It features a heavy eave cornice, prominent chimney stacks, and projecting facade pavilions. The interior reflects both Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts influenced in its design and detailing. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. As of September 19, 2014, the house is unoccupied, as the Zeta Psi fraternity was banned from Lafayette College for a period of 3 years. The fraternity is eligible to return to campus in the fall of 2017.

Herman Simon House

Herman Simon House is a historic home located at Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1902, and is an Indiana limestone dwelling on a granite base in the French Chateau style. It features a four story, semi-circular bay tower and a projecting porch. The rectangular building measures 24 feet wide and 120 feet deep. The building has housed the Easton YWCA beginning in 1930. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. In the 1980s, the Easton YWCA separated from the national organization and transitioned into the Third Street Alliance for Women and Children. That organization is still using the building as of the end of 2014. Herman Simon was an immigrant from Germany who became wealthy in the manufacturing of silk. He died in 1913.

Peace Candle

The Peace Candle is a tower-like structure erected every Christmas season in Easton, Pennsylvania. The approximately 106-foot tall structure, which resembles a giant candle, is assembled each year over the Soldiers Sailors Monument, a Civil War memorial located in the citys Centre Square. It is typically assembled the day after Thanksgiving and disassembled in early February each year. The Peace Candle was first erected in 1951, and has been put up almost every year since then. Due to damage or disrepair, the Peace Candle has been replaced with new candle structures twice since the original construction. The first candle lasted until 1968, the second candle from 1969 to 1989, and the current candle was built in 1990 and is expected to last until around 2014. The structure is dedicated to the Easton area men and women who have served or are serving in the United States armed forces. It has been said to be the largest non-wax Christmas candle in the country. Although conceived with the hopes of restoring Eastons pre-20th century reputation for elaborate Christmas decorations, city officials also believed a candle would serve as a symbol of peace for all religions and denominations. Due to its symbolism for peace and its placement over a Civil War monument, the candle has been the site of several anti-war protests over the decades. Some have criticized the Peace Candle, calling it a symbol of the over-commercialization of Christmas, and condemning the fact that it covers a war monument.

Lafayette College

Lafayette College is a private liberal arts college located in Easton, Pennsylvania, United States. The school, founded in 1826 by James Madison Porter, son of General Andrew Porter of Norristown, and the citizens of Easton, first began holding classes in 1832. The founders voted to name the school after General Lafayette, who famously toured the country in 1824–25, as "a testimony of respect for [his] talents, virtues, and signal services... in the great cause of freedom". Located on College Hill in Easton, the campus is situated in the Lehigh Valley, about 70 mi west of New York City and 60 mi north of Philadelphia. Lafayette College guarantees campus housing to all enrolled students. The school requires students to live in campus housing unless approved for residing in private off-campus housing or home as a commuter. Lafayette College is one of the most highly selective institutions in the United States. The student body, consisting entirely of undergraduates, comes from 46 U.S. states and Territories and 48 countries. Students at Lafayette are involved in over 250 clubs and organizations including athletics, fraternities and sororities, special interest groups, community service clubs and honor societies. Lafayette College's athletic program is notable for The Rivalry with nearby Lehigh University. Since 1884, the two football teams have met 151 times, making it the most played rivalry in the history of college football. The College leads American liberal arts colleges with the most Goldwater Scholarship recipients in the past six years. Notable people of Lafayette College include CEOs Ian Murray and Chip Bergh , author Jay Parini, coach Pete Carril, and politicians William E. Simon (Secretary of the Treasury), John W. Griggs (Attorney General), and Marcia Bernicat (U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh). Additionally, Lafayette counts two Nobel Laureates as alumni, along with dozens of prominent bankers, judges, and scientists.

Palmer Park Mall

The Palmer Park Mall is an indoor one-story shopping mall of 457,734 square feet located in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, in the United States. The mall is located at the intersection of PA Route 248 and Park Avenue in Palmer Township, Northampton County. The mall has over 50 stores and is anchored by Boscov's 192,110 square feet and The Bon-Ton 122,125 square feet . The shopping mall is owned by Cityview Commercial LLC. Palmer Park Mall primarily serves as the main shopping mall for residents of the Easton area, including the townships of Forks, Palmer, and Williams, and the boroughs of Glendon, West Easton, Wilson and Bethlehem Township. The mall also serves as a designated "metro transit center" for several LANTA Metro bus routes, where riders can transfer to different routes.

Easton–Phillipsburg Toll Bridge

The Easton-Phillipsburg Toll Bridge is a bridge that carries U.S. Route 22 over the Delaware River. The bridge is between Easton, Pennsylvania and Phillipsburg, New Jersey, United States. The bridge opened on January 14, 1938, and is operated by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. The main river bridge consists of a 540-foot Petit through-truss span over the river; a 430-foot , five-span plate-girder viaduct at the New Jersey approach; and a 40-foot pre-stressed concrete boxbeam span over PA Route 611 on the Pennsylvania approach. The overall length is 1,020 feet . The four-lane facility has a roadway width of 40 feet . There are 8-foot concrete pedestrian sidewalks outside the trusses on each side. The bridge is the 9th-longest simple truss and 9th-longest steel truss in the United States. When it was constructed in 1938, the bridge ranked first as the longest steel truss in the nation—a distinction it held for 19 years. The toll plaza collects only westbound lanes going into Pennsylvania, and includes the E-Z Pass system. The toll rate per car is $1.00.
