Angel Mounds

Angel Mounds State Historic Site is located on the Ohio River in Vanderburgh and Warrick counties in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Indiana. It is the site of a town constructed and occupied from 1100 CE to 1450 CE as one of the farthest northeastern expressions of the Mississippian culture. Just upriver of the confluence of the Green and Ohio rivers, it is located 8 miles southeast of present-day Evansville. It is administered by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Indiana State Museums and Historic Sites as one of 16 state museums and historic sites. In 1964 this major complex of earthworks was designated a National Historic Landmark because of its significance. It is named after the Angel family who, from the mid-19th century to 1938, owned the property on which it is located.

Set in a 50-acre park, the zoo features 200 species and more than 700 animals roaming freely in natural habitats surrounded by exotic plants, wildflowers, and trees. The Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Founded in 1904, it is one of Southern Indianas most established and significant cultural institutions, with comprehensive collections in art, history, anthropology and science. It has a permanent collection of over 30,000 objects including fine arts, decorative arts, historic documents and photographs, and anthropologic and natural history artifacts. Also on the Museums campus is the Evansville Museum Transportation Center, featuring Southern Indiana transportation artifacts from the late 19th through the mid-20th centuries. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

Children's Museum of Evansville

The Koch Family Childrens Museum of Evansville is an interactive childrens museum in Evansville, Indiana, USA. The museum educates and inspires children about the world. Exhibits include deconstructing objects, a water exhibit that spans multiple floors, experiences about the human body and its senses, and a gallery for freedom of expression. Built inside the historic old Central Library, the museum opened in September 2006. The Art Deco building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now offers visitors three floors of interactive exhibits and galleries. The museum was designed by Roto Studio, a museum design and engineering firm specializing in creating interactive educational environments and experiences for children as well as adults.

Reitz Home Museum

The Reitz Home Museum is a Victorian house museum located in the Riverside Historic District in downtown Evansville, Indiana. The museum offers year-round guided tours to the states only late Victorian house museum. An authentic restoration offers visitors a step back in time with silk damask-covered walls, hand painted ceilings, delicately molded plaster friezes, and intricately patterned hand-laid wood parquet floors. Other features of the home include tiled and marbled fireplaces, stained glass windows, and French gilt chandeliers. Much of the home is decorated with original period furniture. Considered by many to be one of the finest examples of the French Second Empire style architecture, the home has been featured in several issues of Victorian Homes magazine as well as Victorian Decorating and Lifestyle magazine. In 2003 the home received a commendation from the Victorian Society in America for the preservation and restoration of the Victorian mansion.

Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve

Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve is a 240-acre nature preserve located in Evansville, Indiana. It is a National Natural Landmark and a State Nature Preserve owned by the City of Evansville and operated by the non-profit Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve Society. The preserve consists of over 190 acres of virgin bottomland hardwood forest complemented by an additional 50 acres of younger forest, field, and pond. The woods consist of sweetgum, sugar maple, tuliptree, shumard oak, and green ash throughout. It is the largest tract of virgin forest located inside any city limits in the United States. The oldest trees are over 400 years old. Among the largest of their species are 24 state champions and two national champion trees. One of the tallest trees in the state is a tulip poplar located within the park. It is 147 feet tall with a 13.2-foot circumference and 81-foot canopy. Animal species include squirrels, raccoons, gray foxes, coyote, and whitetail deer. The woods also serves as a refuge for a variety of woodpeckers and owls. A nature center welcomes visitors with exhibits, events, wildlife observation areas, a library, and gift shop. The amphitheater near Odonata Pond may also be rented for outdoor activities. The Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve Society also manages Howell Wetlands, a 23-acre wetlands property located at 1400 S. Tekoppel Avenue in the urban western area of Evansville.

Tropicana Evansville

Tropicana Evansville is a riverboat casino in downtown Evansville, Indiana, owned and operated by Tropicana Entertainment. Originally named Casino Aztar, it was opened by Aztar Corporation in 1995 as the states first casino. The main entertainment facility consists of a 2,700 passenger riverboat casino, a 250-room hotel, a 1,660 vehicle parking garage, and pavilion housing pre-boarding facilities, retail shops, restaurants, and lounge area. A new entertainment district with a 100-room boutique hotel and additional restaurants opened in late 2006. In 2005, the casino generated $137 million in revenue and $41 million in profits. The latest expansion is expected to generate additional revenue gains for the property and help it compete with increasing competition.

EVSC Fields

EVSC Fields is a high school soccer complex located in Evansville, Indiana near Roberts Stadium. Owned and operated by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, the facility serves as home field for EVSC schools and the areas two private parochial schools. EVSC Fields was formerly known as EVSC Double Cola Fields while under sponsorship from the Double Cola Company.

Ford Center

The Ford Center is a multi-use indoor arena in downtown Evansville, Indiana with a maximum seating capacity of 11,000. It officially opened in November 2011 and is mainly used for basketball, ice hockey, and music concerts. It is home to the Evansville Purple Aces basketball teams and the Evansville IceMen minor league hockey team of the ECHL.

Alhambra Theatorium

Alhambra Theatorium is a historic movie theater in the Haynies Corner Arts District of Evansville, Indiana. It was designed by Frank J. Schlotter and opened on September 27, 1913 as a movie theater. The Alhambra was one of many influenced by the Alhambra Palace in Spain. Although Alhambra theatres opened all over the world, only a traditional playhouse built in New York in 1905 predates Evansvilles in the United States. The theatre cost $18,000 to build and was one of the largest movie theatres in Evansville at the time. It included a cigar shop and a confectionary, and spurred new business in the area now designated as the Haynies Corner Arts District. The theater ceased operation in 1956. The Alhambra has been renovated a few times in the past 100 years and is in the process of being restored. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Victory Theatre

The Victory Theatre is a 1,950 seat venue in Evansville, Indiana. It is home to the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and also hosts local ballet and modern dance companies, theatre companies, and touring productions. Opened on June 16, 1921 and originally seating 2,500 patrons, the theater was part of the Sonntag Hotel – Victory Theater complex that was organized by Marcus Sonntag and associates who were stockholders in the American Trust and Savings Bank across Sixth Street from the theater. Along with Frederick H. Gruneberg, St., President of the Consolidated Theaters Corporation, Sonntag and his associates contracted with Hoffman Construction Company to build the theater. It was air conditioned with commercial ice. The Victory featured a daily program of four vaudeville acts, a movie, a comedy routine, organ music and a ten-piece orchestra. In 1926 the Victory was leased to Loews Theatres as a movie chain and was renamed Loews Victory. In 1928 Loews featured Evansvilles first "talking picture," an epic titled "Tenderloin." Later that year, "The Jazz Singer," featuring Al Jolson, became the first stand-alone talkie shown in the city. The Loewss Victory Theatre closed in 1971. As the independent Victory Theatre it was divided into a triplex, but was closed in 1979. The theater was restored to its former glory and reopened in 1998 after a $15 million renovation. The Victory was designed by architect John Pridmore of Chicago. The exterior is in the restrained style characteristic of commercial buildings of the era, but the auditorium is more ornate. The stage, 68 feet wide and 82 feet deep, was at the time it was built one of the largest in the Midwest. In 1982 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is owned by the City of Evansville and is co-managed with The Ford Center by VenuWorks.

Swonder Ice Arena

Swonder Ice Arena is an arena and recreational sport facility in Evansville, Indiana. It features two NHL size sheets of ice for hockey, figure skating and open skating. One sheet of ice is open all year. Sound and light, designed with the technology used at the 2002 Olympics, are in use when the skaters skate. Leagues for hockey from beginner to adult also take place year round. On the second level there is a 10,000 sq. ft. workout facility with a running/walking track. The current Swonder Ice Arena opened in October 2002 and replaced the older Swonder Ice Rink. Current seating capacity for spectators is 1,500 approximately 1,000 in the primary rink and approximately 500 in the secondary rink. Swonder was formerly the home of a professional minor league ice hockey team, the Evansville IceMen of the Central Hockey League (starting in the 2011-12 season the IceMen began to play at the Ford Center while continuing to practice at Swonder). Swonder is also home to the Rollergirls of Southern Indiana and local high school and youth hockey teams also compete throughout the winter. In January, 2012, the Evansville Rage of the Continental Indoor Football League moved to Swonder due to large ticket requests. Swonder is also home to the local Indiana State High School Hockey League team, the Evansville Thunder. In 2010, Swonder formed the first theatre on ice team in Indiana. River City Ice Theatre competed at the 2012 U.S. Figure Skating Theater on Ice National Competition in Strongsville, OH where they received a second place award out of 37 teams for best original theme/story. In 2012, River City Ice Theatre was adopted by the Greater Evansville Figure Skating Club and became a 501(c)3 organization. In 2015 the Evansville Thunderbolts of the North American 3 Hockey League began play at Swonder.

Masonic Temple

The Masonic Temple in Evansville, Indiana, USA, is a building from 1913. It was designed by the local architects Shopbell & Company in Classical Revival style. The lodge building once hosted three separately chartered masonic lodges: Evansville Lodge , Reed Lodge and Lessing Lodge . The building measures 72 x 104 feet, with four stories above ground and a basement. The exterior walls of the first two floors are faced with stone and the stories above trimmed with both stone and terra cotta. The interior floors and partitions are supported by steel columns and girders, also following the Roman classic order. The Evansville Masonic Temple continues to host the three Lodges mentioned above and two additional Lodges chartered long after the building was completed. The two additional Lodges are: Constellation Lodge No. 748 and Daylight Lodge No. 752. All Lodges are chartered by the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Indiana. The fourth floor of the Evansville Masonic Temple is the York Rite floor. Evansville York Rite is composed of three separately Chartered Masonic Organizations. Each is Chartered by their respective Grand body of the State of Indiana. The three organizations are: Evansville Chapter No. 12 Royal Arch Masons, Simpson Council No. 23 Cryptic Masons and La Valette Commandery No. 15 Knights Templar. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Willard Library

The Willard Library is a private donation library incorporated in 1881 to serve the City of Evansville and to carry out the terms of a private trust. Willard Library houses a trove of local archives and genealogical materials, in addition to its collection of standard publications. It is built in the Gothic Revival style and designed by James W. Reid . It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Liberty Baptist Church

The Liberty Baptist Church is a church that was founded in 1865 as a congregation of former slaves, according to Historic Evansville. It has a church located at 701 Oak St. in Evansville, Indiana that was built in 1886, as a replacement after a cyclone destroyed an earlier building. The church building includes Gothic architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Citizens National Bank

Citizens National Bank, since known as the Hilliard-Lyons Building and Kunkel Square, is a building noted for its stone and terracotta facade, located at Fourth and Main Street in downtown Evansville, Indiana. The building is ten stories tall and was the region's first skyscraper. The architect was William Lee Stoddart. It officially opened on Washington's birthday in 1916 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. In 2011 the building was converted to 46 luxury apartments.

University of Southern Indiana

The University of Southern Indiana is a public university located just outside Evansville in Vanderburgh County, Indiana, United States. Founded in 1965, USI enrolls 10,929 dual credit, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students in more than 80 majors. USI offers programs through the College of Liberal Arts, Romain College of Business, College of Nursing and Health Professions and the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education. USI is a Carnegie Foundation Community Engaged University and offers continuing education and special programs to more than 15,000 participants annually through Outreach and Engagement. USI athletic teams participate in Division II of the NCAA and are known as the Screaming Eagles. USI is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The university is home to an extensive student life, with more than 140 student organizations.

University of Evansville

The University of Evansville is a small, private university in Evansville, Indiana, with approximately 2,500 students. Founded in 1854 as Moores Hill College, the University features liberal arts and science degrees, most with strong cooperative learning opportunities both on and off campus. The school is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. UE operates a satellite campus, Harlaxton College, in Grantham, England. Due in large part to Harlaxton, known as "The British Campus of the University of Evansville", over 80% of UE's students study abroad at Harlaxton College and 200 other study abroad programs and universities as part of their UE experience. The school is nationally renowned for its Theatre department, with alumni frequently starring in television and film roles. The University is also known as a leader in the area of New Formalism poetry as the home of The Formalist and its successor journal, Measure. The University of Evansville Press also publishes exclusively books and anthologies on formal poetry, including an annual winner of its Richard Wilbur Award. Equally renowned is UE's Engineering School and nursing / pre-med programs. UE's Schroeder Family School of Business is highly regarded for its depth and diversity among Midwestern universities and colleges. UE athletic teams participate in Division I of the NCAA and are known as the Purple Aces. Evansville is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. The university is home to an extensive student life, with more than 155 student organizations and an active Greek community.

Lamasco

Lamasco is a former town, and current district, in Evansville, Indiana originally bounded by the present day streets of St. Joseph Avenue on the west, First Avenue on the east, Maryland on the north and the Ohio River on the south to Fulton (Pennsylvania east of Fulton). Lamasco includes the Independence Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Part of this historic district includes West Franklin Street, a retail and service center with a 100-foot-wide street that plays host to the annual West Side Nut Club Fall Festival.

Goebel Soccer Complex

The Goebel Soccer Complex is a multi-purpose $3.4 million project that opened in the spring of 2004 on 70 acres of land in Evansville, Indiana, USA. The facility has nine Olympic-size irrigated Bermuda grass fields and one Olympic-size AstroPlay turf field. The main field and five of the grass fields have lights for night play. In addition to soccer, the complex also plays host to football and lacrosse events.

Bosse Field

Bosse Field, is a baseball stadium located in Evansville, Indiana. Built in 1915, it is the third-oldest ballpark still in regular use in the United States, surpassed only by Fenway Park in Boston and Wrigley Field in Chicago. It is the current home of the Frontier League Evansville Otters, a minor league baseball team. The Old National Events Plaza is a 280,000-square-foot convention center and auditorium in Evansville, Indiana that consists of a 2,500-seat auditorium, a 38,000-square-foot exhibit hall, 14,000-square-foot ballroom, and 12 flexible 1,000-square-foot meeting rooms. The facility hosts small and medium-sized conventions ranging from 20 to 4,000 people. The auditorium is also frequently the site a variety of concerts and special events. Formerly known as Vanderburgh Auditorium, the building underwent a major renovation and expansion in the mid 1990s and renamed the Centre. The architects involved with the project included HOK Venue and Veazey Parrot & Shoulders. It is co-managed with the Ford Center, Mesker Amphitheatre, and Victory Theatre.

Mesker Amphitheatre

Mesker Amphitheatre is a historic 8,500-seat amphitheater, located in Evansville, Indiana, United States. It contains 5,500 chairback seats and 3,000 lawn seats and is located at Mesker Park, near the Mesker Park Zoo. It was built after the death of local philanthropist George Mesker, in 1936, who left $500,000, for park improvements and an additional $250,000, to provide music and entertainment. The venue was closed in 2012 due to its deteriorating condition. It has sat vacant since, with crates of seats that were removed from Roberts Municipal Stadium sitting on its stage and near its entrance. The amphitheatre's future remains uncertain.

Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse

The Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse, often simply called the "Old Courthouse," was once the center of Vanderburgh County, Indiana government. Construction started in the spring of 1888 and was completed in November 1890. The building was ready to be occupied by the county government in early 1891. It sits in the heart of downtown Evansville. The building was designed by architect Henry W. Wolters of Louisville, Kentucky and constructed by the Charles Pearce & Company of Indianapolis. The 19th century German Beaux-Arts architecture masterpiece cost $379,450 to build. The Old Courthouse occupies an entire city block, bounded by Court, Fourth, Vine and Fifth Streets, with each side being encrusted with sculptures and stone carvings in Indiana limestone. The fourteen main statues of human figures are the work of Franz Engelsmann, who studied under the great German masters before setting up his studio in Chicago. In addition, carvings of vegetables, fruits, and flowers indigenous to the area adorn the capitals of the forty-eight pairs of pilasters around the entire building. Before the courthouse was built, the site was a basin where canal boats on the Wabash and Erie Canal would deliver cargo and turn around for the return trip north. After the advent of the railroads and the canal's abandonment, the site was filled in and the courthouse was constructed upon it.

McCurdy Hotel

The McCurdy Hotel is a historic building in the Riverfront District of Evansville, Indiana, built in the colonial revival style and designed by architect Henry Ziegler Dietz. The McCurdy was constructed on the former site of the St. George Hotel, which was razed in 1915. It opened for business on June 17, 1917 and closed on March 16, 1969 due to bankruptcy.

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library is a public library system serving Evansville and Vanderburgh County in Indiana, USA. The EVPL also supplements the services provided by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation and has the authority to approve the tax levy of the independently run and operated Willard Library. The EVPL had a total circulation of 2,922,126 and had 1,842,085 in-person visits to its system in 2013, making it one of the largest public library systems in Indiana. EVPL was rated a five star library by the Library Journal, which places it in the top 1% of public libraries in the U.S. EVPL also obtained a Top Ten library ranking in the 2010 edition of Hennen's American Public Library Ratings, achieving a number eight ranking within its population category.

Charles H. Braun Stadium

Charles H. Braun Stadium is a baseball venue in Evansville, Indiana, USA. It is home to the Evansville Purple Aces baseball team of the Division I Missouri Valley Conference. The stadiums capacity is 1,200 spectators, much of which consists of chair-backed seating. The venue is named for Charles H. Braun, an Evansville businessman who died in 1998. Brauns sons, Alan and Charles, Jr., are both involved in the University, Alan as trustee and Charles, Jr. as a former golf coach. Braun Stadium features the Marv and Edie Bates Press Box. Marv Bates was a broadcaster of Evansville sports. Both he and his wife supported Aces athletics.

Roberts Municipal Stadium

Also see: Sports in Evansville. Roberts Municipal Stadium was a multi-purpose arena in Evansville, Indiana for sports, public events, and concerts. The arena was built in 1956. It seated up to 12,732 spectators and featured four locker rooms and a press room. The building was demolished in 2013. The arena received a $16 million upgrade in 1990. In 2007 the city of Evansville hired a professional consultant to examine whether the stadium should be renovated or replaced with a new downtown arena. In December 2008, the Evansville city council approved plans to construct the new arena, which opened in the fall of 2011 as the Ford Center. It was co-managed with Mesker Amphitheatre, The Centre, and Victory Theatre.
