Texas Instruments

Texas Instruments Inc. is an American electronics company that designs and makes semiconductors, which it sells to electronics designers and manufacturers globally. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, United States, TI is the third largest manufacturer of semiconductors worldwide after Intel and Samsung, the second largest supplier of chips for cellular handsets after Qualcomm, and the largest producer of digital signal processors and analog semiconductors, among a wide range of other semiconductor products, including calculators, microcontrollers and multi-core processors. Texas Instruments is among the Top 20 Semiconductor producing companies in the world. Texas Instruments was founded in 1951. It emerged after a reorganization of Geophysical Service, a company that manufactured equipment for use in the seismic industry as well as defense electronics. TI began research in transistors in the early 1950s and produced the world's first commercial silicon transistor. In 1954, Texas Instruments designed and manufactured the first transistor radio and Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit in 1958 while working at TI's Central Research Labs. The company produced the first integrated circuit-based computer for the U.S. Air Force in 1961. TI researched infrared technology in the late 1950s and later made radar systems as well as guidance and control systems for both missiles and bombs. The hand-held calculator was introduced to the world by TI in 1967. In the 1970s and 1980s the company focused on consumer electronics including digital clocks, watches, hand-held calculators, home computers as well as various sensors. In 1997, its defense business was sold to Raytheon. In 2007, Texas Instruments was awarded the Manufacturer of the Year for Global Supply Chain Excellence by World Trade magazine. Texas Instruments is considered to be one of the most ethical companies in the world. After the acquisition of National Semiconductor in 2011, the company has a combined portfolio of nearly 45,000 analog products and customer design tools, making it the world's largest maker of analog technology components. In 2011, Texas Instruments ranked 175 in the Fortune 500. TI is made up of two main divisions: Semiconductors and Educational Technology of which Semiconductor products account for approximately 96% of TI's revenue.

Dallas Zoo

Dallas Zoo is a 106-acre zoo located 3 miles south of downtown Dallas, Texas, in Marsalis Park. Established in 1888, it is the oldest and largest zoological park in Texas and is managed by the non-profit Dallas Zoological Society. It is home to over 2,000 animals representing 406 species. It is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums , and is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums . Since 2009, when the Dallas City Council voted unanimously to turn the zoo over to private management under the DZS, attendance and community support for the zoo has surged. In 2013, the zoo achieved an all-time annual attendance record of 915,971 visitors. During that year, the zoo’s 125th, visitor totals exceeded 2012 attendance by 46,166—more than 5%. The Dallas Zoological Society is supported by over 20,000 membership households and growing. The DZS manages all fundraising, membership, special events, food services, retail operation, volunteer programs, marketing, and public relations for the zoo under management contract with the City of Dallas.

Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is located on the sixth floor of the Dallas County Administration Building in downtown Dallas, Texas, overlooking Dealey Plaza at the intersection of Elm and Houston Streets. The museum examines the life, times, death, and legacy of President John F. Kennedy, and is located at the very spot from which Lee Harvey Oswald, according to four government investigations, shot and killed the President on November 22, 1963. The museums exhibition area uses historic films, photographs, artifacts and interpretive displays to document the events of the assassination, the reports by government investigations that followed, and the historical legacy of the national tragedy. The museum is self-sufficient in funding, relying solely on donations and ticket sales. It rents the space from the County of Dallas. The museum was founded by the Dallas County Historical Foundation. It opened its doors on Presidents Day, February 20, 1989. A museum webcam features a live view from the sniper spot.

One Main Place

One Main Place is a mixed-use skyscraper hotel and office building at 1201 Main Street in Dallas, Texas. The building rises 445 feet . It contains 33 above-ground floors, and was completed in 1968. One Main Place currently stands as the 27th-tallest building in the city. The architectural firm who designed the building was Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, who also designed the Willis Tower and John Hancock Center in Chicago and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Gordon Bunshaft was the lead designer of One Main Place and a few of his notable buildings include Lever House in New York, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. Originally conceived in the 1950s by the Dallas Texas Corporation to become Dallas's first Superblock, the building's 30,000 SF footprint occupies only a third of the 2.4 acre property, almost a full city block. To the east and west of the property, recessed plazas provided tenants with access to the exterior without the intrusion of automobiles. The 1.1 Million SF building includes five sub-surface levels tied to the Dallas Pedestrian Network and a 700-space parking garage. Excavation work on the project began in 1965 and construction was completed in 1968. Following completion, One Main was immediately sold to Equitable Life Insurance Company. Subsequent owners included RREEF and RAK Group. Today, New Orleans-based KFK Group owns the building known as "One Main". In 2015, a large portion of the building was converted to a hotel, The Westin Dallas Downtown. Opened in December 2015, the hotel has an entrance on the ground floor while the second floor of the building houses the hotel's public rooms, with the lobby in the former banking hall, as well as a restaurant and a bar. The third floor houses convention facilities. The top ten floors of the building have been converted to hotel rooms, leaving nineteen floors of offices. The 32nd floor houses a Starwood Preferred Guest Lounge in addition to fitness facilities and an indoor pool overlooking Main Street.

Dallas Holocaust Museum/Center for Education & Tolerance

The Dallas Holocaust Museum/Center for Education & Tolerance is a Holocaust museum located in Dallas, Texas. In 1977, 125 Jewish Holocaust survivors and North Texas residents joined together and formed an organization called Holocaust Survivors in Dallas. In 1984, the survivors along with national and North Texas benefactors established The Dallas Memorial Center for Holocaust Studies. The museum was located at the Dallas Jewish Community Center in North Dallas. In January 2005, the Memorial Center changed its name to the Dallas Holocaust Museum/Center for Education & Tolerance, and moved to its present, temporary location in downtown Dallas. Plans have been made for its permanent location in the historic West End area of downtown Dallas, Texas. The museum houses an actual boxcar (from Belgium) used to transport Jews to ghettos and Nazi concentration camps. In addition to the museum collection, an entire room is designed as a memorial. Plaques on the walls list the names of lost relatives of Dallas survivors. The museum also features temporary exhibitions as well as tours led by Dallas Holocaust survivors.

Northwood Club

Northwood Club is a private country club in Dallas, Texas. It hosted the U.S. Open in 1952, won by Julius Boros, which ended Ben Hogans streak of titles at three in three attempts; the Fort Worth native led after two rounds but finished in third place. Northwood has since been the host of several Regional USGA, local North Texas PGA, and AJGA tournaments. The course was originally designed by W. H. Diddel, with many large trees lining the fairways and traditional small greens. The course was redesigned in 1990 by Jay Moorish and Tom Weiskopf. The golf course plays 6,835 yards to a par of 70 from the championship tees. The Northwood Club golf course consistently ranks in the Top 20 Golf Courses in Texas by The Dallas Morning News. The Northwood golf course has Cato-Crenshaw bentgrass putting greens, along with 419 bermuda grass tees and fairways. The roughs are a mix of bermuda, zoysia and fescue grasses. Many mature trees are on the property, including live oak, red oak, pecan, American elm, cedar elm, hackberry and cottonwood. In addition to the 18 hole golf course, current athletic facilities include 16 tennis courts with four indoor courts. A notable Northwood tennis program alumni is tennis professional Bill Scanlon, who began playing tennis at Northwood at nine years of age. During Scalons tennis career, he won two NCAA singles championships at Trinity University in 1975 and 1976,won numerous titles on the professional tour, and in 1983 was ranked as high as No. 9 in the world. Northwood Club has a large resort-style swimming pool complex, changing facilities, lockers and a poolside cafe and adult pavilion bar. The main clubhouse is approximately 65,000 square feet with banquet facilities seating 550 and can accommodate cocktail parties of up to 700, ala carte dining at lunch and dinner and several private-function rooms. Adjacent to the main clubhouse is a 16,000-square-foot two-story building offering a full fitness center, including group exercise and massage and child care services.

Cathedral of Hope

The Cathedral of Hope , a member congregation of the United Church of Christ, is an historically and predominantly LGBT congregation located in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas, Texas . The Dallas Cathedral of Hope is said to be the world's largest inclusive "liberal Christian church with a primary outreach to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons", with a membership of over 4,000 local members. The Rev. Michael Piazza was senior pastor for nearly twenty years during the late 1980s and 1990s. He oversaw the largest growth in the church's history, from 250 members to more than 3,000 while ministering through the AIDS Crisis. Additional campuses are located in Houston, Mid-Cities, and Oklahoma City. Its national outreach program reaches a further online audience nationwide. The Cathedral of Hope joined the United Church of Christ in February 2007, having previously been the flagship congregation of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. In November 2009, construction was commenced on the Cathedral of Hope's Interfaith Peace Chapel, designed by the prominent architect Philip Johnson (Alan Ritchie Architects). Dedication of the building was on November 7, 2010. The Rev. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas has been the cathedral's senior pastor since May 2015.

Farmers Market

The Dallas Farmers Market is a large public market located at 1010 S. Pearl Expressway in the Farmers Market District of downtown Dallas, Texas . Beginning in the late 19th century, farmers began selling their fresh produce in various locations from their wagons. Around 1900, the intersection of Pearl and Cadiz streets became the hub of a brisk wholesale business. Large quantities of produce were sold along with chickens, pigs, goats, and eggs. As demand for farm-fresh produce and meat grew it was clear that a better-organized system was needed. In 1939, the site of the Dallas Farmers Market was formalized and the first shed established. The site was officially sanctioned as a municipally-owned and operated market in December 1941. Today, the Dallas Farmers Market features three kinds of sellers: produce dealers, wholesale dealers and local farmers. Monthly yard sales, cooking classes, workshops, and seasonal festivals also take place throughout the year. Floral and garden vendors are located adjacent to the market.
