Top Attractions in Asunción

Palacio de los López

Palacio de López is a palace in Asunción, Paraguay, that serves as workplace for the President of Paraguay, and is also the seat of the government of Paraguay. Located in the center of Asunción, looking at the bay, this building was built by order of Carlos Antonio López, to serve as residence for his son, the General Francisco Solano López, there the fact that the building name is "Palacio de los López". His works began in 1857 under the direction of the English architect Alonso Taylor. The materials for the construction of the palace came from several places inside the country, stones from the quarries of Emboscada and Altos, woods and odrajes of Ñeembucú and Yaguarón, bricks of Tacumbú, iron pieces molten in Ybycuí, etc. Various European artists came to Paraguay to handle building decoration. In 1867, War era of the Triple Alliance, the Palace of the López was almost finished, although were missing finishing details for completion. The ornamentation was statuettes of bronze and furniture imported from Paris, and large and decorated mirrors for halls of Palacio. The building also has extravagant night lighting.

Asunción Paraguay Temple

The Asunción Paraguay Temple is the 112th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . On April 2, 2000 an announcement was made that the LDS Church was planning to build a temple in Paraguay. Although there were already eleven other dedicated temples in South America, the Asunción Temple was the first temple to be built in Paraguay. The Asunción Temple will serve more than 68,000 members in the area. In 1949 Paraguay was officially opened to Mormon missionaries under the mission headquartered in Uruguay. In 1977 Paraguay became its own mission area and soon after converts to the LDS Church began to increase. The average number of baptisms per year in Paraguay up to that time had been just over 200. In the year following the announcement 400 people were baptized into the church. Currently, there are approximately more than 152,000 Mormon members in Paraguay. On February 3, 2001 the site for the Asunción Paraguay Temple was dedicated and a groundbreaking ceremony was held. Despite it being a rainy, cloudy day, many members came to be a part of the building of the temple. An open house was held from May 4-11, 2002. This allowed Latter-day Saints and those not of the faith to see the inside of the temple and learn more about what takes place inside. On Sunday May 19, 2002 four dedicatory sessions were held, allowing all church members who wanted to attend an opportunity to be present. LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley gave the dedicatory prayer. The Asunción Paraguay Temple has a total of 10,700 square feet , two ordinance rooms, and two sealing rooms.

National Pantheon of the Heroes

The National Pantheon of the Heroes is a building and landmark of Asunción, Paraguay, and a national monument of Paraguay. The National Pantheon of Heroes and oratory of the Virgin Our Lady Saint Mary of the Asuncion which is located between Palma and Chile streets in the downtown of the capital of Paraguay, is a must for all tourists and foreign delegations arriving visit to Paraguay and Asuncion. It is, at the same time, an architectural jewel of great artistic, cultural and heritage. In October 1863, the then president Francisco Solano López, ordered the construction of the chapel of the Virgin of the Asuncion, was designed by Italian architect Alejandro Ravizza, in collaboration with the builder Giacomo Colombino. But as a result of the War of the Triple Alliance, the building remained unfinished and scaffolding for over 70 years. Only after the Chaco War in 1936 was able to finish and was inaugurated on October 12 of that year, to become by presidential decree in National Pantheon of Heroes. The National Pantheon is the mausoleum of the country, where lie the remains of the great heroes of Paraguayan history such as Don Carlos Antonio López (1st president Constitutional), Mariscal Francisco Solano López, Mariscal José Félix Estigarribia and his wife. In addition, the Children Martyrs Acosta Ñu, two Unknown Soldiers, among others. Within the enclosure of the pantheon have set countless illustrious honorary plaques sent by foreign rulers, kings and princes. Congratulations and verses of appreciation to the Paraguayan Navy, Air Force among others. Many wonder what the significance of the inscription in Latin, which is in the front of the pantheon, "Fides et Patria" means, "My faith and my country." It is customary in Asuncion that when something historic happens people flock with their flags to the street in front of it and celebrate the event. The ceremonial changing of the guard is held several times a day.

Estadio Manuel Ferreira

The Estadio Manuel Ferreira, is a football stadium in Asunción, Paraguay. It is the home venue of Club Olimpia and is named after former club president Manuel Ferreira. The stadium was opened in May 1964 with a friendly match between Olimpia and the powerful Santos FC of Brazil, which had the great Pelé in its team. The excitement to see Pelé playing was so big that the stadium's capacity was exceeded. Because of that during the game one of the fences supporting the crowd in the stands broke and many people got injured. As soon as the incident happened, Pelé ran and jumped over the fence to help the injured people. Fortunately, only minor injuries occurred and the match proceeded, ending in a 2-2 draw. Even though this is the "home" of Club Olimpia, the Defensores del Chaco stadium is used for important matches such as international matches for Copa Libertadores or derbies against the classic rivals such as Cerro Porteño. This is because the Defensores del Chaco has a greater capacity . The stadium is nicknamed "El Bosque de Para Uno" on account of its surroundings constituting large, tall trees, thus the area is vaguely reminiscent of a forest . "Para Uno" references the location having been the first stop of a now defunct Paraguayan train.

The Ciudad de Asunción is an autonomous capital district not part of any department. The metropolitan area, called Gran Asunción, includes the cities of San Lorenzo, Fernando de la Mora, Lambaré, Luque, Mariano Roque Alonso, Ñemby, San Antonio, Limpio, Capiatá and Villa Elisa, which are part of the Central Department. The Asunción metropolitan area has more than 2 million inhabitants. The Municipality of Asunción is listed on the Asunción Stock Exchange, as BVPASA: MUA, a unique feature of any city. It is the home of the national government, principal port, and the chief industrial and cultural centre of the country.
