Cleveland Museum of Art

The Cleveland Museum of Art is an art museum located in the Wade Park District, in the University Circle neighborhood on Clevelands east side. Internationally renowned for its substantial holdings of Asian and Egyptian art, the museum houses a diverse permanent collection of more than 45,000 works of art from around the world. The museum has remained historically true to the vision of its founders, keeping general admission free to the public and with a $750 million endowment it is "one of the wealthiest in the nation." With about 598,000 visitors annually, it is one of the most visited art museums in the world.

Cleveland Museum of Natural History

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is a natural history museum located approximately five miles east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio in University Circle, a 550-acre concentration of educational, cultural and medical institutions. The museum was established in 1920 by Cyrus S. Eaton to perform research, education and development of collections in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, botany, geology, paleontology, wildlife biology, and zoology. Donald Johanson was the curator of the museum when he discovered "Lucy," the skeletal remains of the ancient hominid Australopithecus afarensis. The current Curator and Head of the Physical Anthropology Department is Yohannes Haile-Selassie. In 2002, the new Fannye Shafran Planetarium was built near the entrance to the museum, containing displays on the planets in the Solar System, and historical instruments of exploration, such as compasses and astrolabes.

Franklin Castle

Franklin Castle is a historical house located at 4308 Franklin Boulevard in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood. The building has four stories and more than twenty rooms. It is purported to be the most haunted house in Ohio. On 15 March 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

I-X Center

The International Exposition Center, also known as the I-X Center, is a convention and exhibition hall located in Cleveland, Ohio, adjacent to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The 2,200,000-square-foot building includes over 1,000,000 square feet total square feet of exhibition and conference space, making it one of the largest meeting, convention, and exhibition centers in the United States. The diverse show schedule includes public events featuring one of the countrys largest boat shows, Trade Show 200 events, banquets and meetings attracting over 2 million visitors each year. Originally located within Brook Park, Ohio, the building and 90 acres of neighboring land became part of Cleveland in a 2001 land swap that sent most of the NASA Glenn Research Center to Brook Park.

International Women's Air & Space Museum

The International Women's Air & Space Museum, Inc. is a museum dedicated to the preservation of the history of women in aviation and space and the documentation of their continuing contributions today and in the future. The museum began as a committee of the Ninety-Nines in order to collect historical artifacts and memorabilia of women pilots. In 1986, the International Women's Air & Space Museum opened in Centerville, Ohio in the former home of one of the Wright brothers' uncles. Bernice Steadman, an aviator and member of the Mercury 13, was one of the museum's co-founders. IWASM resided at its original Centerville location until 1998, when the museum relocated to Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, where IWASM is located today, after it outgrew the Centerville home and needed to find a new location. The International Women's Air & Space Museum's exhibits are in the lobby at Burke, as well as the west concourse, and are accessible seven days a week. Since the International Women's Air & Space Museum is located throughout the terminal of Burke Lakefront Airport, a public building, admission to this museum is free.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is a public airport located nine miles southwest of the central business district of Cleveland, a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The airport lies just within the city limits of Cleveland. It is the largest and busiest airport in the state of Ohio and a focus city for Frontier Airlines. The airport was founded in 1925, making it the first municipality-owned airport in the United States. The airport has been the site of several other airport firsts: the first air traffic control tower, ground to air radio control and the first airfield lighting system, all in 1930, and the first U.S. airport to be directly connected to a local or regional rail transit system, in 1968. The airport was named after its founder, former city manager William R. Hopkins, on his 82nd birthday in 1951. In 2006 Cleveland unveiled a new marketing campaign. The slogan, "CLE Going Places," is said to depict the airport's pursuit of improving passengers' experience as it upgrades the airport facility and negotiate additional air services. Improvements include upgrades to the restaurant and store concessions, taxi service, on-site parking, customer service areas, and the attraction of additional flights to new destinations with the airport's new air service development program.

Willard Park (Cleveland park)

Willard Park is a public park in downtown Cleveland, in the U.S. state of Ohio. The park sits at the northwest corner of East 9th Street and Lakeside Avenue, adjacent to Cleveland City Hall, and is within the boundaries of the Cleveland Mall historic district. St. Theodosius Russian Orthodox Cathedral

St. Theodosius Russian Orthodox Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox parish located on Starkweather Avenue in the Tremont neighborhood, on the near west side of Cleveland, Ohio. It is considered one of the finest examples of Russian church architecture in the U.S. and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The parish is the first Orthodox parish in Cleveland and is currently under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of the Midwest of the Orthodox Church in America. St. Theodosius is perhaps best known for its appearance in the 1978 film, The Deer Hunter with Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and Meryl Streep.

Cleveland Botanical Garden

The Cleveland Botanical Garden, located in the University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States, was founded in 1930 as the Garden Center of Greater Cleveland. It was the first such organization in an American city. Originally housed in a converted boathouse on Wade Park Lagoon, the center served as a horticultural library, offering classes and workshops for gardeners and spearheading beautification projects in the community. In 1966, having outgrown its original home, the Garden Center moved to its present location in University Circle, the site of the old Cleveland Zoo. Remnants of the old bear pit still remain in the Ohio Woodland Garden. In 1994, the organizations Board of Trustees changed the name to Cleveland Botanical Garden to reflect a dramatically expanded mission and launched an ambitious capital campaign to develop a facility that would support the enhanced program agenda. The expanded and renovated building, designed by Graham Gund Architects of Cambridge, Massachusetts, opened to the public in July 2003. The centerpiece of the $50 million 2003 expansion is The Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse, an 18,000 square foot conservatory home to plant and animal life from two separate biomes, the spiny desert of Madagascar and the cloud forest of Costa Rica. They feature over 350 species of plants and 50 species of animals, including hundreds of butterflies. There are also 10 acres of gardens, including the award-winning Hershey Childrens Garden, the Elizabeth and Nona Evans Restorative Garden, the David and Paula Swetland Topiary Garden, the Western Reserve Herb Society Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Sears-Swetland Rose Garden, the Ohio Woodland, the C.K. "Pat" Patrick Perennial Border, and the public Campsey-Stauffer Gateway Garden. The gardens were featured in a fifth-season episode of Supernatural, titled "Dark Side of the Moon".

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is a 183-acre zoo in Cleveland, Ohio. The Zoo is divided into several areas: Australian Adventure; African Savanna; Northern Trek; The Primate, Cat & Aquatics Building; The RainForest; and Waterfowl Lake. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has one of the largest collections of primates in North America, and features Monkey Island, a concrete island on which a large population of colobus monkeys are kept in free-range conditions . The Zoo is a part of the Cleveland Metroparks system. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo was founded in 1882. It is one of the most popular year-round attractions in Northeast Ohio; by attendance, the Cleveland Indians were the most popular attraction in Northeast Ohio in 2007 with a total attendance of over 2.2 million. The Zoo announced that more than 1.2 million people visited in 2007, marking a 2% rise in attendance from 2006.

Steamship William G. Mather Maritime Museum

The Steamship William G. Mather is a retired Great Lakes bulk freighter now restored as a museum ship in Cleveland, Ohio, one of four in the Great Lakes region. She transported cargo such as ore, coal, stone, and grain to ports throughout the Great Lakes, and was nicknamed "The Ship That Built Cleveland" because Clevelands steel mills were a frequent destination.

USS Cod

USS Cod is a Gato-class submarine, the only vessel of the United States Navy to be named for the cod, a common food fish of the North Atlantic and North Pacific. Her keel was laid down by the Electric Boat Company of Groton, Connecticut on 21 July 1942. The submarine's four diesel engines were built by General Motors' Cleveland Diesel plant located on the west side of Cleveland. She was launched on 21 March 1943 (sponsored by Mrs. G.M. Mahoney), and commissioned on 21 June 1943 with Lieutenant Commander James C. Dempsey in command. She is now permanently moored as a museum ship in Cleveland, Ohio, and is open to visitors.

Great Lakes Science Center

The Great Lakes Science Center is a museum and educational facility in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, United States. Many of the exhibits document the features of the natural environment in the Great Lakes region of the United States. The facility includes signature and traveling exhibits, meeting space, a cafe, and an Omnimax theater. Great Lakes Science Center is funded by the citizens of Cuyahoga County through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, grants, funds, and corporate and individual gifts. The museum opened in July 1996. The centers exhibits support STEM with exhibits including the BioMedTech Gallery, advanced energy, science phenomena and space. The Science Center is home to the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, one of only 11 such Visitor Centers in the country. Also, Science Center staff conduct daily science demonstrations. Throughout the school year, the Science Center provides STEM education to field trip students each year with programs and exhibits supporting classroom curriculum by meeting Ohio Revised Standards in Science. It also provides educator professional development programming. Homeschool workshops and programs are offered October through February. During the summer, the Science Center offers educational and fun camps for preschoolers through 12th graders that occur in various locations throughout Northeast Ohio. Year round, the Science Center provides classes, workshops, sleepovers and scout programs, as well as seasonal events for families, kids and adults. The Science Center installed a wind turbine in its front yard in summer 2006. The wind turbine provides approximately 7% of the Science Center’s annual electrical needs. A year later, it completed the installation of a 300-foot solar array canopy featuring 156 photovoltaic panels that provide enough power to light all of the Science Center’s 65,000 square feet of exhibition space for one hour. During the course of a year, the solar array produces an average of 100 kWh per day, the equivalent of the average electrical usage of four homes. The Science Center also offers opportunities alternative energy exhibitions for guests to interact with a touch-screen kiosk displaying both real-time and historical data. The Great Lakes Science Center is located between FirstEnergy Stadium and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at North Coast Harbor on the shore of Lake Erie. Discounted parking is available for guests in the attached 500-car garage.

Old Stone Church

The Old Stone Church is a historic Presbyterian church located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, and is the oldest building on Public Square. It is also the second church built within the city limits.

James A. Garfield Memorial

The James A. Garfield Memorial was built in memory of the 20th U.S. President, James A. Garfield, who was assassinated in 1881. The memorial is located at 12316 Euclid Avenue in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. The caskets of the President and Lucretia Garfield lie in a crypt beneath the memorial, along with the ashes of their daughter and son-in-law. The tomb was designed by architect George Keller utilizing Ohio sandstone, with reliefs depicting scenes from Garfields life. The exterior sculptures were done by Caspar Buberl. Its construction began in 1885, and it was dedicated on May 30, 1890. Its cost, $135,000, was defrayed by popular subscription. The round tower is 50 feet in diameter and 180 feet high. The interior features stained glass windows, mosaics, and a 12-foot tall marble statue of President Garfield by Alexander Doyle. An observation deck provides views of downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie. The monument was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is open to the public daily from April 1 through November 19 from 9am to 4pm.

Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland

The Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, better known by its acronym, MOCA, is a contemporary art museum located in Cleveland, Ohio. Founded in 1968 by Marjorie Talalay, Agnes Gund, and Nina Castelli Sundell as The New Gallery, the museum was renamed the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art in 1984. In order to expand its exhibition space, in 1990 the museum moved to a 20,000-square-foot former Sears store on Carnegie Avenue that is now part of the Cleveland Play House complex which was renovated by Richard Fleischman + Partners Architects, Inc. to retrofit the space. In 2002, CCCA changed its name to Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland. On October 8, 2012 the new $27.2 million home for MOCA opened to the public at the corner of Mayfield Road and Euclid Avenue. The new building was designed by world-famous London architect Farshid Moussavi. The museums new location, adjacent to Little Italy in University Circle, places it in the citys cultural hub.

The Temple

The Temple built in 1924 is a historic synagogue building located on University Circle at Silver Park in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1963, a branch synagogue, Tifereth-Israel, was established in suburban Beachwood, which is now the main place of worship. The congregation now known as The Temple Tifereth Israel still owns the University Circle building, whose Silver Sanctuary, named for longtime rabbi, Abba Hillel Silver, is still used on the High Holy Days as well as for life cycle events and meetings. In Mar 2010, Case Western Reserve University and the Temple Tifereth-Israel announced a historic partnership to create the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center, which was led by a donation of $12 million from the Maltz Family Foundation of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland. The university estimates that the total renovation of the building will require $25.6 million, with an additional $7 million needed for construction of a pedestrian bridge/walkway to connect the building to the university campus. Under the agreement, the Jewish community will continue to use the facility for yearly special events.

The African American Museum in Cleveland

African American Museum formerly the Afro-American Cultural Historical Society Museum in Cleveland, Ohio was founded in 1953 by Icabod Flewellen. The Museum is housed in a 100-year-old Carnegie Library building. The Museum works to educate young people about the positive contributions of blacks to the cultures of the world, and to eliminate the distorted portrayals and images of black people.

Glenn Research Center

NASA John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field is a NASA center, located within the cities of Brook Park, Cleveland, and Fairview Park, Ohio between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and the Cleveland Metroparkss Rocky River Reservation, with a subsidiary facility in Sandusky, Ohio. Its director is James M. Free. Glenn Research Center is one of ten major NASA field centers, whose primary mission is to develop science and technology for use in aeronautics and space. As of May 2012, it employed about 1,650 civil servants and 1,850 support contractors located on or near its site. In 2010, the formerly on-site NASA Visitors Center moved to the Great Lakes Science Center.

Dunham Tavern

The Dunham Tavern, located at 6709 Euclid Avenue, is the oldest building in Cleveland, Ohio. Rufus and Jane Pratt Dunham built their first home on the site in 1824, and the existing taproom was built in 1842. It is believed to be the first building constructed on Euclid Avenue east of East 55th Street and the first frame house on the street. It later became a stagecoach stop and tavern.

A Christmas Story House

A Christmas Story House is a museum in Cleveland, Ohios Tremont neighborhood. The 19th-century Victorian, which was used in the exterior scenes of Ralphie Parkers house in the 1983 film A Christmas Story, was purchased by a private developer in 2004 and has been restored and renovated to appear as it did both inside and outside in the film. The museum is open to the public year round.

Learning Center and Money Museum

The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland is the Cleveland-based headquarters of the U.S. Federal Reserve System's Fourth District. The district is composed of Ohio, western Pennsylvania, eastern Kentucky, and the northern panhandle of West Virginia. It has branch offices in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The check processing center in Columbus, Ohio, was closed in 2005. The chief executive officer and president is Loretta Mester. The bank building is a 13 story 203 foot high-rise, located at Superior Avenue and East 6th Street in downtown Cleveland was designed by the Cleveland firm of Walker and Weeks and completed in 1923. Its exterior architecture emulates an Italian Renaissance palazzo, is clad in pink Sienna marble. An extension to the building designed by HOK was completed in 1998, providing new facilities for check processing and cash handling. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building's entrances feature allegorical sculptures by Henry Hering representing Security and Integrity flanking the East Sixth Street entrance, while his Energy watches the Superior Avenue entry. Its original 100 short tons bank vault door is the largest in the world. The hinge has an overall height of 19 feet and weighs over 47 short tons fully assembled. The door casting itself was 20 short tons . It incorporates the largest hinge ever built. The vault's use was discontinued in 1997, though it is preserved intact for posterity.

Allen Memorial Medical Library

Allen Memorial Medical Library is located along Euclid Avenue on the campus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. The library was designed in a classical revival style by the Cleveland firm of Walker and Weeks and completed in 1926. In addition to housing a portion of the Cleveland Health Sciences Library, it is also home of the Dittrick Museum of Medical History. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on 1982-11-30, and is also a Cleveland Landmark.

Cleveland City Hall

Cleveland City Hall was built in 1916 at 601 Lakeside Avenue in downtown Cleveland's Civic Center and is where the Cleveland City Council meets. The building was the first of its kind designed by Cleveland architect J. Milton Dyer (who also designed the CAC Building) for governmental purposes for a major U.S. city. At the time of its construction, the Hall was to continue the all important city planning of Daniel Burnham's 1903 Group Plan. The City Hall stands as a historic landmark that was added to the Cleveland Landmarks Commission. The rotunda in the building has been the site of numerous weddings, rallys, protests, galas, and even the grave of U.S. Representative Louis Stokes.

Warner and Swasey Observatory

The Warner and Swasey Observatory is the astronomical observatory of Case Western Reserve University. Named after Worcester R. Warner and Ambrose Swasey, who built it at the beginning of the 20th century, it was initially located on Taylor Road in East Cleveland, Ohio, USA. The observatory, which at that time housed a 9.5-inch refractor, was donated in 1919 to the Case School of Applied Science. The newer 24-inch Burrell Schmidt telescope was built in 1939. Due to rising light pollution in Cleveland, a new station in Geauga Countys Montville Township was established in 1950s. Named after Jason John Nassau, the station initially housed the Burrell telescope, which was later moved to Kitt Peak National Observatory. Instead of Burrell the station was equipped with the 36-inch robotic telescope. In 2008 Nassau Station was sold to the Geauga Park District and subsequently incorporated into its Observatory Park. The observatory currently operates the old 9.5-inch refractor at the universitys University Circle campus, and the Burrell Schmidt telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. The old site on Taylor Road was sold in 1983.

Horseshoe Casino Cleveland is a casino located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It opened on May 14, 2012 as the first casino in the state of Ohio. It is owned and operated by Rock Ohio Caesars, a joint venture between Caesars Entertainment and Dan Gilberts Rock Gaming. Rock Ohio Caesars LLC also developed Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati, which opened on March 4, 2013.

Wade Memorial Chapel

The Wade Memorial Chapel is a historic chapel in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The Neoclassical chapel was built in 1901 in Clevelands Lake View Cemetery, which is the location of over 104,000 burials. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The chapel is located at the intersection of Lake and Chapel Roads, near the cemetery offices and north of the Garfield Memorial. The chapel was constructed in honor of Jeptha Wade, a Cleveland industrialist who was the president of the cemetery association that founded Lake View Cemetery. Its interior, which is largely decorated with glass, was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Cleveland Cultural Gardens

The Cleveland Cultural Gardens are a collection of public gardens located in Rockefeller Park in Cleveland, Ohio. The gardens are situated along East Boulevard Martin Luther King Jr. Drive within the 276 acre of wooded parkland on the citys East Side. In total, there are 31 distinct gardens, each commemorating a different ethnic group whose immigrants have contributed to the heritage of the United States over the centuries, as well as Cleveland.

- Shared (Only yourself and Gurus you nominate can add content)
- Private (The collection will only be visible to yourself)

Showcase attractions that members have created (eg. local historical society)
Special Interest
If GuRoute does not have a category for your special interest you add your attractions to your own collection instead
