Museum of Discovery and Science

The Museum of Discovery and Science is a museum located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is one of the largest museums of its kind in Florida, and has the most visitors of any museum in the state. The museum features its own AutoNation IMAX theater, and shows 3-D IMAX films in which viewers wear special glasses and headsets. The museum also features a number of "ecoscapes", as well as a simulated ride to Mars, a simulated airboat ride in the Everglades and a MaxFlight airplane flight simulator. Among the more popular aspects of the museum are the quantity and variety of Floridian animal species on display. The public are allowed to get quite close to the animal life such as otters, baby alligators, snakes, tortoises, rabbits, bats, tarantulas, scorpions, geckos, cockroaches, centipedes, hermit crabs, freshwater fish, freshwater stingrays, black pacus, frogs, tadpoles, alligator snapping turtle, turtles, sharks, saltwater fish, horseshoe crabs and a sea turtle, and the museum frequently has organized animal-centered demonstrations, or more informal meet-and-greets with native and exotic Florida fauna. Other than the animals on display, the Museum of Discovery and Science currently features a Discovery Center for ages 7 and under, Go Green exhibit, Runways to Rockets including airplane simulators and information about space, Powerful You! exhibit, minerals and rocks on display, prehistoric fish and dinosaur eggs and fossils on display, games, puzzles, the Explore Store, food concessions, and a moving exhibit. The Museum of Discovery and Science moved to its current location in downtown Fort Lauderdale in 1992. The "Great Gravity Clock" in front of the entrance is one of the main features of the museum and is one of only three in the world. The other two are in Japan and Mexico. The museum plays host to birthday parties, (sea) turtle walks and camp-ins, and has its own summer camp. The Museum of Discovery and Science also funds a volunteer program that allows children and adults alike to give back to the community. The IMAX theater offers IMAX with Laser and features a 4980 square foot screen, playing both 2-D and 3-D movies. The five-story-high screen is the largest in South Florida. The museum also hosts many special event activities such as the annual "Food and Wine Gala" to raise money. In November 2011 the museum opened a 34,000 square foot, $25 million expansion, designed by Cambridge Seven Associates. The expansion, titled the EcoDiscovery Center, doubles the amount of exhibit space in the museum and includes exhibits called: The Everglades Airboat Adventure, Prehistoric Florida, Otters at Play, Storm Center, Florida Water Story. The new wing also houses four lifetime learning spaces and a large temporary exhibit space. The new wing opened simultaneously with a new Science Theater in the aviation exhibit gallery.

Bonnet House

The Bonnet House is a historic home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States. It is located at 900 Birch Road. On July 5, 1984, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It is named after the Bonnet Lily. The property was originally acquired in 1895 by Hugh Taylor Birch, a successful Chicago lawyer, and given to his daughter Helen and her husband, artist Frederic Clay Bartlett, as a wedding gift in 1919. Bartlett built a plantation-style home on the property and wintered there with his wife and child from a previous marriage, Frederic Jr, until Helen died in 1925. Bartlett then married Evelyn Fortune Lilly, ex-wife of Eli Lilly, and they continued to use the home as a winter residence until his death in 1953 and hers in 1997. She deeded the property in 1983 to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, which maintains the property as a historic house museum called the Bonnet House Museum Gardens. Bartletts sister, Maie Bartlett Heard, founded the Heard Museum in Phoenix with her husband Dwight B. Heard. This place served as the finish line for the seventh season of the hit CBS reality show The Amazing Race. In May, 2008 The National Trust for Historic Preservation listed the building on their list of Americas Most Endangered Places.

New River Inn

The New River Inn is a historic site in Fort Lauderdale, Florida located at 231 Southwest 2nd Avenue. The New River Inn was constructed in 1905 by the areas first contractor Edwin T. King. It was commissioned by Nathan Philemon Bryan, a Jacksonville native and US senator. The building was constructed of hollow concrete blocks and sand dredged from the nearby beach setting the standard for modern construction in the region. It included sewer and irrigation systems, running ice water and was lit with carbide lamps. The 24-room building served as a hotel from 1905-1955. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The Inn now serves as a museum showcasing Floridas past and pioneer life. The museum is owned and operated by the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. Permanent exhibits include: "Panorama of the Past" detailing the entire history of the Greater Fort Lauderdale area; a hotel room which has been decorated to appear as a typical hotel room of 1908; and the historic King-Cromartie House built in 1907. The New River Inn is located at 231 SW 2nd Avenue and is open for tours Tuesday through Sunday from Noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 and includes a self-guided tour of the New River Inn and a docent-led tour of the 1907 King-Cromartie House and the 1899 Replica School House. Docent-led tours begin at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Las Olas Boulevard

Las Olas Boulevard is a popular thoroughfare in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States that runs from Andrews Avenue in the Central Business District to A1A and Fort Lauderdale Beach. The easternmost section of the boulevard is interlaced with canals and waterfront homes. The commercial stretch, approximately 1-mile in length, features cool sub-tropical breezeways and courtyards with bars, nightclubs, bridal stores, shops, boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and the Riverside Hotel—this is referred to as the "Riverfront" area of downtown Fort Lauderdale. The name "Las Olas" means "The Waves" in Spanish. All but the westernmost fourteen blocks are also signed as State Road 842. Las Olas has its own historic house, a museum of art, a nearby IMAX cinema and an art house movie theater within a short walk. Las Olas Boulevard can be accessed by the Fort Lauderdale water taxi. The boulevard is a popular dining and shopping destination for locals and visitors as it is situated close to Fort Lauderdale beach, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades.

Fox Observatory

Fox Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association. It is located in Sunrise, Florida . In the late 1960s, Dr. Joseph Dennison Fox, Professor of Astronomy and History, completed his tenure at the University of Puerto Rico, and with his wife Sylvia, retired to North Miami. He brought with him an optical tube assembly for a 6-inch f/15 refractor. This telescope, in its updated and restored state, now resides in the Fox Observatory, on the grounds of Markham Park. The lens and original tube assembly were built by Chester Brandon, renowned as a designer of eyepieces and objective lenses. The mounting of the telescope is made in part from a landing gear off a World War-II, P-38 fighter. In 1965, the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association Inc., was formed. In 1970, Dr. Fox joined, and in June 1973, he donated the Brandon refractor to the club. The refractor was to be housed in a yet-to-be-built observatory, located west of Fort Lauderdale. The new observatory would be named for Dr. Fox in recognition of his generosity and leadership. Initial plans for the grounds, building and roof were drawn up on July 13, 1974. Broward County okayed the final architectural drawings on November 10, 1975, and the building permit was issued on Thursday, November 13. The observatory was officially named for Dr. Fox a week later, on the 20th. On Sunday, March 20, 1977, at 4:30 p.m., one year behind schedule, the Fox Astronomical Observatory was dedicated. The Brandon refractor, with its P-38 mount and asbestos covered aluminum tube, was in its present position. Present at the dedication was astronomer Jack Horkheimer--"The Starhustler.") In 1978, a vintage, 1923, Zeiss mount became available for the 6-inch Brandon refractor through Art Smith of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium. When the new mount was installed, the P-38 mount was stored, but later lost. Between August 1993 and July 1995, the Brandon refractor was restored by Tom Peters, a club member and restorations expert. The club voted to put the job of refurbishing the entire instrument, including the Zeiss equatorial mount, in Toms skillful hands on August 5, 1993. Everything was dismantled, and the objective was sent to D G Optical to be refinished. After completion of the task, Barry Greiner, of D G, mounted the objective in a new aluminum tube, with light baffles. Since the opening of the observatory in 1977, more than 100,000 visitors have visited the observatory, located in Markham Park, 12 miles west of Fort Lauderdale, Florida on SR-84, and it is available for public viewing every Saturday evening.

Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church

Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church is a Christian megachurch within the Presbyterian Church in America located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. It was founded in 1960 by D. James Kennedy , who served as the church's senior pastor until his death in 2007. The present church building seating 2,800 persons was dedicated on February 3, 1974 by evangelist Billy Graham. It became affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America denomination on May 16, 1978; Coral Ridge was originally a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, the so-called "Southern" church before 1983. Beginning in 1978 under pastor D. James Kennedy, the church's weekly services were televised as the Coral Ridge Hour, eventually reaching a nationwide audience of more than 3 million. Production of new broadcasts from the church were discontinued in 2007 after Kennedy's death, although reruns of Kennedy's sermons continue to air on some networks. The Westminster Academy and Knox Theological Seminary, also in Ft. Lauderdale, are educational ministries of the church. W. Tullian Tchividjian, a grandson of Billy Graham, succeeded Kennedy as senior pastor of the church in April 2009 until June 2015.

Port Everglades

Port Everglades is a seaport in Broward County, Florida. As one of South Florida's leading economic powerhouses, Port Everglades is the gateway for international trade and cruise vacations. Currently the third busiest cruise port worldwide, Port Everglades is also the busiest container port in Florida and 10th busiest in the United States, moving more than 1 million TEUs in 2013. Port Everglades is South Florida's main seaport for receiving petroleum products including gasoline, jet fuel, and alternative fuels. The port serves as the primary storage and distribution seaport for refined petroleum products, distributing fuel to residents of 12 Florida counties. Port Everglades is also recognized as a favorite United States Navy liberty port. With a depth of 43 feet , Port Everglades is currently the deepest United States port south of Norfolk, Virginia. The Port Everglades Department is a self-supporting Enterprise Fund of Broward County government with operating revenues of approximately $139 million in Fiscal Year 2011 (October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011). It does not rely on local taxes for operations. The total value of economic activity at Port Everglades is nearly $15.3 billion annually. Approximately 160,000 Florida jobs are impacted by the Port, including 11,400 people who work for companies that provide direct services to Port Everglades.

Nova Southeastern University

Nova Southeastern University is a private nonprofit university, with a main campus located on 300 acres in Davie, in the US state of Florida. Formerly referred to as "Nova" and now commonly called "NSU", the university currently consists of 18 colleges and schools offering over 175 programs of study with more than 250 majors. The university offers professional degrees in law, business, osteopathic medicine, allied health, pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing. Nova Southeastern enrolled 24,148 students in the 2014-2015 academic year, and has produced over 164,000 alumni. The university was founded as the Nova University of Advanced Technology on a former Naval Outlying Landing Field built during World War II. The university first offered graduate degrees in the physical and social sciences. Leo Goodwin, Sr. left a $16 million bequest to the university in 1971 which funded its expansion throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1994, the university merged with the Southeastern University of the Health Sciences and assumed its current name. NSU is classified as a high research and community engaged university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and also has numerous additional specialized accreditation for its colleges and programs. The NSU Sharks compete in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as members of the Sunshine State Conference.

Bienes Museum of the Modern Book

The Bienes Museum of the Modern Book, previously known as the Bienes Center for the Literary Arts, is the rare book department of Broward Countys Main Library in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States. The Broward County Libraries Divisions Bienes Museum of the Modern Book opened to the public on December 5, 1996. The Bienes Museum houses important collections including the Jean Fitzgerald WPA Federal Writers Project; WPA Museum Extension Project; WPA and other New Deal agencies, 1932–1942; the Paulette and Robert Greene Collection of Books about Books and Florida Fine Press publications; Floridiana; Florida Artists Book Collection; J.D. MacDonald Collection; Siers Collection of Big Little Books; Deicke Collection of Books on Rare Tropical Fruits and Vegetables; Nyr Indictor Collection of ABC Books and Related Materials; and Vojtech Kubasta pop-up and other books. It also hosts special exhibits and other festivals.

Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple

The Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple is a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is the 143rd temple of the LDS Church. The announcement that a temple would be built in south Florida was made by church president Thomas S. Monson on October 3, 2009, during the church's semi-annual general conference. The temple was announced concurrently with the Brigham City Utah, Concepción Chile, Fortaleza Brazil and Sapporo Japan temples. It is the second temple constructed in Florida and the first in the heavily populated southern part of the state. The state's other temple, in Orlando, was completed in 1994. Subsequent to the announcement, a local church official indicated that the temple would likely be constructed somewhere in western Broward County rather than within the city of Fort Lauderdale itself. No specific location was disclosed. Ground was broken on June 18, 2011. A public open house took place from March 29 to April 19, 2014. The temple was formally dedicated on May 4, 2014, by Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the church's First Presidency. The temple was given a 2014 South-East Engineering Award for best built building.

Broward Center for the Performing Arts

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is a large multi-venue theater and entertainment complex located in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. Opened in 1991 on a 5.5-acre site along the north bank of the New River at Sailboat Bend, the center became a catalyst for major downtown revitalization efforts and an anchor of the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District. Designed by award-winning architect Benjamin C. Thompson, the Broward Center is considered the cultural heart of Broward County. Hosting operas, ballets, concerts, plays, lectures and numerous community events in its four theaters, Broward Center is partners in the arts with several renowned organizations including the Symphony of the Americas, Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet, Concert Association of Florida, Gold Coast Jazz. National tours of Broadway productions are presented in partnership with Broadway Across America. Broward Center's mission includes a strong focus on integrating the arts into education and a substantial portion of annual programming is dedicated to educational and community endeavors. Broward Center for the Performing Arts is in the downtown riverfront area, in the South Florida region. In the process, it has also become one of the USA's most visited theaters, ranked number four in the world by Venues Today and seven worldwide by concert trade publication Pollstar for annual sales in 2007. As of 2011, the Broward Center receives over 700,000 patrons annually with over 700 different events. Plans were also announced for an expansion to the center to begin in spring 2012.

Sawgrass Mills

Sawgrass Mills is a shopping mall operated by the Simon Property Group, in Sunrise, Florida, a city in Broward County. With 2,383,906 square feet of retail selling space, it is the eighth largest mall in the United States, the largest single story mall in the U.S., and the second largest mall in Florida. The mall opened in 1990 as the third mall developed by the now-defunct Mills Corporation (now part of Simon Property Group), and has been expanded four times since then, most recently in 2013. There are over 300 retail outlets and name brand discounters, with anchors including Off 5th, and Super Target. Because of its size, Sawgrass Mills is divided into three parts: the main mall with four main "Avenue" sections and a "Fashion Avenue" subsection; the "Oasis", an outdoor component opened in 1999 including Regal Cinemas, Ron Jon Surf Shop, and Nordstrom Rack and "The Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass" opened in 2006 as an upscale lifestyle area with shops and restaurants, anchored by Last Call! Neiman Marcus. Additionally, there are numerous "outparcel" stores and plazas.

Kaplan University

Kaplan University is the "doing business as" name of the Iowa College Acquisition Corporation, a company that owns and operates non-competitive for-profit colleges. It is owned by Kaplan, Inc., a subsidiary of Graham Holdings Company. Kaplan University is predominantly a distance learning institution of higher education that is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Kaplan University was named in honor of Stanley H. Kaplan, who founded Kaplan Test Prep. The university elected to participate in U.S. News & World Report rankings for Best Online Bachelor programs in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Submissions were evaluated, ranked and published in January of the following year. Kaplan University’s online bachelor’s program ranked #56 in 2014, #76 in 2015, and #137 in 2016. Kaplan University also elected to participate in 2013 in the best online nursing program. Kaplan’s School of Nursing elected not to participate in subsequent years. Kaplan University has faced several federal whistle-blower lawsuits whose accusations dovetail with the findings of an undercover federal investigation which revealed high-pressure recruiting and unrealistic salary promises. Kaplan's enrollment has declined from 119,000 to 65,000 amid these controversies. According to the New York Times, 23% of Kaplan's programs fail the proposed gainful employment regulations, and an additional 10% are close to failing. This means that a significant number of Kaplan graduates are unable to pay back their student loans.

Andytown

Andytown was a town located in Broward County, Florida, United States at the intersection of U.S. 27 and SR 84. It was demolished in 1979 in order to allow for the expansion of the Alligator Alley portion of Interstate 75. Andytown can be found on maps from the 1970s (and even 1980s, as it was years before they were updated). It still remains today on some online map services. MSN's Maps service, for instance, returns a map for a search of Andytown. Google Maps similarly includes a place marker for it. In its day, when SR 84 and US 27 were each two-lane roads, the intersection was controlled by a simple traffic light. At the southeast corner of that intersection sat a typical highway gas station-convenience store-restaurant. The restaurant was a very popular stopping point, especially for people who ventured into or returned from the Everglades. Further remains of Andytown are located east of US 27 on Griffin Road; across the street from the cemetery is an FPL substation, named the Andytown Substation. Additionally, in nearby Davie, a bar called Andy's Lounge and Package displayed an old Andytown sign over their door, until the bar was demolished to make way for a Cumberland Farms. Near Andytown was another place called Jo-Mo City on U.S. 27.
