Augusta National Golf Club

Augusta National Golf Club, located in Augusta, Georgia, is one of the most famous golf clubs in the world. Founded by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts on the site of the former Fruitland Nursery, the course was designed by Jones and Alister MacKenzie and opened for play in January 1933. Since 1934, it has played host to the annual Masters Tournament, one of the four major championships in professional golf, and the only major played each year at the same course. It was the number one ranked course in Golf Digests 2009 list of Americas 100 greatest courses and is currently the number ten ranked course on Golfweek Magazine‍ s 2011 list of best classic courses in the United States, in terms of course architecture. The golf clubs exclusive membership policies have drawn criticism, particularly because there were no African-American members admitted until 1990, as well as a former policy requiring all caddies to be black, which was omitted from the clubs bylaws in 1959. The club began granting membership to women in August 2012. Prior to the acceptance of female members, Augusta National defended its position by citing that in 2011, more than 15% of the non-tournament rounds were played by female players who were member guests or spouses of active members. In August 2012, it admitted its first two female members, Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore. The golf club has defended the membership policies, stressing that it is a private organization.

Fort Gordon

Fort Gordon, formerly known as Camp Gordon, is a United States Army installation established in 1917. It is the current home of the United States Army Signal Corps and Cyber Center of Excellence and was once the home of "The Provost Marshal General School" . The fort is located next to Augusta, Georgia to the southwest of the city. The main component of the post is the Advanced Individual Training for Signal Corps military occupational specialities. In 1966–68 the Army's Signal Officer Candidate School (located at Fort Monmouth during World War II and the Korean War) graduated over 2,200 Signal officers. Signals Intelligence has become more visible and comprises more and more of the fort's duties.

Woodrow Wilson Boyhood Home

The Woodrow Wilson Boyhood Home is a historic house museum at 419 Seventh Street in Augusta, Georgia. Built in 1859, it was a childhood home of Woodrow Wilson , the 28th president of the United States and proponent of the League of Nations. The house is owned and operated by Historic Augusta, Inc., and was designated a National Historic Landmark on October 6, 2008.

Morris Museum of Art

The Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia was established in 1985 as a non-profit foundation by William S. Morris III, in memory of his parents, as the first museum dedicated to the collection and exhibition of art and artists of the American South. In 1989, Morris bought 230 pictures for the museum from Southern art collector Robert P. Coggins, with Keith Claussen appointed museum director the following year. On September 26, 1992, "The Morris" opened to the public, attracting over 10,000 visitors in the first two months. With more than 3,000 works in its permanent collection, the museum hosts changing exhibitions, educational programs, musical events, and hands-on art programs. The museum is located adjacent to Riverwalk Augusta and the Savannah River.

Augusta Botanical Gardens

The Augusta Botanical Gardens is a 17-acre botanical garden located in downtown Augusta, Georgia. Until July 2007, it contained display gardens along the banks of the Savannah River, and include a rose garden with over 800 miniature rose varieties, as well as sculptures of famous golfers Raymond Floyd, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer. Because of financial problems, the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame closed the gardens. Most of the plants died because they were not watered. On September 6, 2007, the sculptures were removed and placed in a maintenance shed on the property, where they remain to this day. The property is still owned by the state, though there is no funding for its upkeep. On June 6, 2009, after a well-publicized eight day battle with state agencies, the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame allowed a group of two dozen citizens to enter the property to cut the grass. Residents of Augusta and the surrounding areas continue to maintain parts of the property for free even though the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame will not allow them to use the property except to maintain it. There have been proposals by some city officials and by GA Gov. Sonny Perdue to redevelop some of the Botanical Gardens property for the construction of a new baseball stadium for the Augusta GreenJackets. The proposed stadium, designed by Cal Ripken, Jr. would incorporate the Gardens in its design. The new stadium’s turf management crew is proposed maintain the gardens as part of the stadium’s operating responsibilities.

Meadow Garden

Meadow Garden, is a historic house museum in Augusta, Georgia. It was home of George Walton, one of Georgias three signers of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, and later a governor of Georgia and a U.S. senator. Meadow Garden was saved and established by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1901. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

Christenberry Fieldhouse

The George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse is a 3,026 seat facility on the campus of Georgia Regents University in Augusta, Georgia, and is home to the athletics department as well as some classes. It is home to the Georgia Regents Jaguars mens and womens basketball teams as well as the womens volleyball team. The first game at Christenberry Fieldhouse was held on February 2, 1991 against the University of South Carolina, a 76-62 loss. Christenberry Fieldhouse hosted the first four Peach Belt Conference Basketball Championships from 1992-1995, and again in 2004 and 2005. In addition, the arena has been the host venue of the NCAA Southeast Region of the NCAA Mens Division II Basketball Championship each year from 2007 through 2011. Georgia Regentss mens basketball team, which competed as Augusta State University from 1996-2012, amassed a winning streak of 48 consecutive games played at Christenberry Fieldhouse that began on December 15, 2008 with an 80-68 defeat of conference foe Georgia College State University. The streak ended with a 75-73 loss in the 2011 NCAA Southeast Region Championship to Anderson University on March 15, 2011. Entering the 2012-2013 season, the Jaguars had amassed a home record of 74-4 from the 2007-2008 season through the 2011-2012 season. In October 2011, a set of bleachers were added to one end zone of Christenberry Fieldhouse. The new bleachers are the new location of Georgia Regentss student section, known as "JagSwag". These new bleachers officially hold room for 405 spectators, raising the official capacity of the Fieldhouse from 2,216 to 2,621. A second set of bleachers were added to the opposite end zone during the 2012 offseason, boosting the official seating capacity to its current figure of 3,026. The record attendance of 3,718 was set on February 3, 2010 in a 73-59 win over archrival University of South Carolina Aiken. This figure also marked the highest attendance ever to witness an Augusta State athletic event, and also marked a new Peach Belt Conference attendance record. The Fieldhouse hosts many events, ranging from the Elite32 Summer Jam to badminton leagues and Tai Chi classes. Then-President Bill Clinton visited the venue on February 5, 1997. There is a plaque located near the main entrance to the arena honoring his visit.

James Brown Arena

James Brown Arena is part of the multi-purpose complex, The Augusta Entertainment Complex in Augusta, Georgia, and currently managed by Global Spectrum. It features an 8,500 seat arena, renamed the James Brown Arena, in honor of musician James Brown on August 22, 2006. The complex also features a 2,690 seat theater, the William B. Bell Auditorium, and a 14,500-square-foot exhibit hall that opens into a 23,000-square-foot arena floor. The James Brown Arena is the former home of the ECHLs Augusta Lynx from 1998–2008, the af2s Augusta Stallions from 2000–2002, the American Indoor Football Associations Augusta Colts from 2006-2008, and the Southern Professional Hockey Leagues Augusta RiverHawks from 2010–2013. The Arena hosted UFC 11. The arena has also hosted many concerts and pro wrestling events, including ECWs December to Dismember in 2006. Many bands have played the arena including Van Halen, Rush, Heart, Bob Seger, REO Speedwagon, KISS, Bon Jovi, Molly Hatchet, John Cougar, Kansas, Charlie Daniels Band, Alabama, Blackfoot, Mothers Finest, Ratt, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Cheap Trick, Marshall Tucker Band, and Loverboy. The center-hung Fair Play scoreboard dates to the arenas opening in 1980, and in recent years has been joined by additional scoreboards and a Trans-Lux LED video display which can be found at each end of the arena.

Sibley Mill

The Sibley Mill is a historic building located on the Augusta Canal at 1717 Goodrich Street near downtown Augusta, Georgia. Designed by Jones S. Davis, it was built on a site previously occupied by the Confederate Powderworks, and was completed in 1882. While the interior is typical of any textile mill of the period, its imposing exterior is notable for an ornate style variously described as eclectic and neo-gothic. Textile products were produced there until 2006, since when the building has been unoccupied. The mill was built to operate on hydropower, and continues to generate electricity today.

Old Government House

The Old Government House, also known as the Old Richmond County Courthouse, is a historic courthouse located in downtown Augusta, Georgia. It housed the seat of the local government from 1801 to 1821. It is one of the oldest remaining public buildings in the city.

Springfield Baptist Church

Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia was built in 1801 by a Methodist congregation. It is the oldest church building extant in Augusta and one of the oldest in the state. It was built in the style of a New England meetinghouse, rare in Georgia. "The simple, two story rectangular wooden building has two doors at the first floor topped by two arched windows and a smaller arched attic window in the gable of the street facade. The east and west sides of the church boast first and second floor ranges of seven wooden 12/12 windows. The interior of the church has an assembly-hall plan consisting of a shallow vestibule on the north end and a long narrow meeting hall." In 1844 the Methodists moved to a new church, and the wooden building was taken over by the Springfield Baptist congregation, one of the oldest black Baptist congregations in the nation. During the antebellum years, it had 1,000 members and was the largest congregation of any in the Georgia Baptist Association. In 1897 the congregation built a new church on the site, in the Late Victorian Gothic style. It continues to maintain the old one and uses it for special events. The congregation claims continuous ties with Silver Bluff Baptist Church, founded 1774-1775 in South Carolina as one of the first black Baptist congregations in the nation. For this reason, the historian Walter Brooks suggested it was the oldest black Baptist congregation. The First Baptist Church in Petersburg, Virginia was organized in 1774 and also contends for this distinction. The 1801 Springfield Baptist Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The boundary of the NRHP-listed site was increased in 1990.

Joseph Rucker Lamar Boyhood Home

Joseph Rucker Lamar Boyhood Home is the boyhood home of Joseph Rucker Lamar in Augusta, Georgia. Lamar served as Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 13, 1996. It is located at 415 7th Street. The house was constructed in 1860. It is located in the Augusta Downtown Historic District, is the headquarters of Historic Augusta, and is used as a visitors center for the Boyhood Home of Woodrow Wilson.

Academy of Richmond County

The Academy of Richmond County is a high school located in Augusta, Georgia, United States. Known previously as Richmond County Military Academy, it is commonly known as Richmond Academy or ARC. Chartered in 1783, it is the fifth oldest existing public high school in the United States, and the oldest existing public high school in the Southern United States. Richmond Academy is located at the edge of the Summerville historic district of Augusta.

Reid-Jones-Carpenter House

The Reid-Jones-Carpenter House, located at 2249 Walton Way, Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, constructed in 1849, is a single story wood frame building on raised basement of stuccoed brick. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 13, 1979.

Stephen Vincent Benét House

The Stephen Vincent Benét House, commonly referred to as Benét House, is a historic house on the Summerville campus of Georgia Regents University in Augusta, Georgia. The house was built 1827–29 as the Commandant's House of the Augusta Arsenal, and is a much-altered example of Federal period architecture. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971 for its association with the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Stephen Vincent Benét , who lived here in the 1910s. The house, which housed the official residence of the Augusta State University for a time, presently houses the Summerville campus's office of admissions.

It is part of the Downtown Augusta Redevelopment Plan. Ground breaking for the facility was held in June 2010. The complex is over 200,000 square feet . The facility has 40,000 square feet of exhibit hall space, which could hold 195 10-by-10-foot booths, seat 3,500 people as a theater or feed 1,800 as a banquet hall. The building design also includes a ballroom, a kitchen, a loading dock and storage space. It was built on the property next to the Marriott hotel and on the Augusta Riverwalk. A 400 space parking garage has been built across the street from the center. The cost of the center is estimated at $40 million.

Stallings Island

The orphanage closed in 1970 and reopened in 1977 as the Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 30, 1996. It is located at 1635 15th Street. The orphanage was established in 1902 by the Shiloh Baptist Association. Land for the orphanage was purchased in 1904 near the historically black community of Bethlehem. Strong Academy, a one room school for young children was built in 1910; the Girls Dormitory was designed by Scroggs and Ewing and completed in 1927; and the Edward Lynn Drummond designed Boys Dormitory was constructed in 1936. The grounds included a vegetable garden and a grazing area for cattle.

Summerville, (commonly referred to locally as "The Hill"), is a large, affluent residential area and historic district located northwest of downtown Augusta, Georgia. The district is site of the historic homes of John Milledge, George Walton, and Thomas Cumming.

1934 Masters Tournament

The 1934 Masters Tournament was the first Masters Tournament, held March 22–25 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. It was officially known as the "Augusta National Invitation Tournament" for its first five editions, but informally as the Masters from the start. Horton Smith won the event with a 20-foot birdie putt at the 17th hole , and finished at 284 , one stroke ahead of runner-up Craig Wood. (The current nines were reversed in 1934, switched to the current configuration prior to the 1935 event.) Tournament co-founder and host Bobby Jones finished ten strokes back at 294, tied for thirteenth place. The total purse was $5,000 and the winner's share was $1,500.

1935 Masters Tournament

The 1935 Masters Tournament was the second Masters Tournament, then still known as the "Augusta National Invitation Tournament," held April 4–8 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. In a change from the first year, the nines were switched to their present order, with the finishing hole at "Holly." In the fourth round, Gene Sarazen holed a double eagle to tie Craig Wood and force a 36-hole playoff. This second shot at "Firethorn," the par-5 15th hole, then 485 yards , is referred to in golf as the "shot heard 'round the world." Sarazen won the Monday playoff by five strokes, even-par 144 to 149 , and parred the 15th hole in both rounds. Tournament co-founder and host Bobby Jones finished at 297, fifteen strokes back in a tie for 25th place. The purse was $5,000 and the winner's share was $1,500.

1936 Masters Tournament

The 1936 Masters Tournament was the third Masters Tournament, held April 3–6 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Horton Smith won his second Masters, one stroke ahead of runner-up Harry Cooper, with defending champion Gene Sarazen in third. Still officially named the "Augusta National Invitation Tournament," the purse was $5,000 with a winner's share of $1,500. Due to heavy rains, the first round of play was postponed until Friday. Sunday's play was also postponed and the third and fourth rounds were played on Monday. On the back nine of the final round, Smith chipped in for birdie from 50 feet at the 14th hole, birdied the next hole, then parred out to win again. Cooper led after each of the first three rounds in an attempt to become the first wire-to-wire winner at the Masters; that occurred at the 1941 edition, won by Craig Wood. After three rounds under par, Cooper shot 76 in the final round on Monday afternoon, with his bogey on the 17th hole proving decisive.

1937 Masters Tournament

The 1937 Masters Tournament was the fourth Masters Tournament, held April 1–4 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Opening with a six-under 66, Byron Nelson led after the first and second rounds, but a 75 on Saturday dropped him four strokes back, in a tie for third. On the final nine on Sunday, he gained six strokes on third round leader Ralph Guldahl over two holes and won the tournament by two strokes. Compared to Guldahl's 5–6 , Nelson played the 12th and 13th holes 2–3 , respectively. The Nelson Bridge, over Rae's Creek departing the 13th tee, was dedicated in 1958 to commemorate the feat. At age 25, this was the first of Nelson's five major titles; he won the Masters again in 1942, which was not held again until 1946. Guldahl rebounded and won three majors over the next two years: the U.S. Open in 1937 and 1938 and the Masters in 1939. Sam Snead made his Masters debut and finished 18th. The purse was $5,000 with a winner's share of $1,500.
