Cape Cod Maritime Museum

Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Skating Rink

The Lieutenant Joseph Patrick Kennedy Junior Memorial Skating Rink was an ice skating rink in the town of Barnstable, Massachusetts. It was named after the late Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., who was killed when his B-24 Liberator exploded during a bombing mission. The facility also doubled as an ice hockey rink for Barnstable High School. The last public skate occurred on March 22, 2009. It was replaced by the Hyannis Youth and Community Center.

Cape Cod Melody Tent

Cape Cod Melody Tent is a South Shore Playhouse Associates-owned tent theater located in Hyannis, Massachusetts, in the city of Barnstable. Affiliated with the South Shore Music Circus, these are the only two continuously-operated tent theaters in the round in the United States. The Music Circus and Melody Tent are owned and operated by the South Shore Playhouse Associates, a not-for-profit organization. The seating capacity is approximately 2,250. It was originally known as Cape Cod Music Circus from 1950-1951. David M. Holtzmann, a theatrical attorney who represented actress Gertrude Lawrence, owned both theaters from the late 1950s until his death in 1965, after which they were operated by his widow, Sondra.

Hyannis Public Library

Hyannis /ˌhaɪˈænɪs/ is the largest of the seven villages in the town of Barnstable, Massachusetts, in the United States. It is the commercial and transportation hub of Cape Cod and was designated an urban area as of the 1990 census. Because of this, many refer to Hyannis as the "Capital of the Cape". It contains a majority of the Barnstable Town offices and two important shopping districts: the historic downtown Main Street and the Route 132 Commercial District, including Cape Cod Mall and Independence Park, headquarters of Cape Cod Potato Chips. Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis is the largest on Cape Cod. Hyannis is a major tourist destination and the primary ferry boat and general aviation link for passengers and freight to Nantucket Island. Hyannis also provides secondary passenger access to the island of Martha's Vineyard, with the primary passenger access to Martha's Vineyard being located in Woods Hole, a village in the nearby town of Falmouth. Due to its large natural harbor, Hyannis is the largest recreational boating and second largest commercial fishing port on Cape Cod, behind only Provincetown. The village is the namesake of the former United States Naval ship USS Hyannis .

Municipal Group Historic District

The Municipal Group Historic District is a historic district encompassing a cluster of five municipal buildings in the Hyannis village of Barnstable, Massachusetts. Included are the library , old town hall , two buildings currently housing town offices that were originally part of the Hyannis Normal School, and the Crowell/Guyer Barn, a 19th-century structure now used by the local public works department. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The library is housed in a former residence, built c. 1800, which was owned for many years by the Hallett family. It was purchased in 1908 for use as a library, and continues to fulfil that role, albeit with a modern addition to the rear that greatly expands its capacity. The Crowell/Guyer Barn is a 1-1/2 wood frame structure with a front-gable roof that has decorative brackets under the eaves. It was built c. 1865, and its earliest documented owner was Captain Sidney Crowell, a ship master active in the coasting trade. The "Old Town Hall" is a neo-Federal two story brick building, with a five-bay main block flanked by symmetrical single-story wings. Its entry is distinguished by a semi-circular portico supported by Corinthian columns. It was built in 1926 to replace the previous town hall, located in West Barnstable, that was built in 1899. It served as town hall until 1979, when the former buildings of the Hyannis Normal School were acquired to house town offices. The two surviving buildings (out of three originally built) of the Hyannis Normal School were designed by Hartwell, Richardson and Driver, and built in 1897 after the state awarded Hyannis the location of a new normal school. The main building and former dormitory are large brick three-story buildings (one is eleven bays wide, the other thirteen), with slate hip roofs. They were used (along with the training school, an elementary school building that has not survived) until the school closed in 1944. After serving a variety of other purposes, they were acquired by the town in 1979. The former school's open space in front of these buildings now serves as the town green.

Capt. Alexander Crocker House

The Capt. Alexander Crocker House is a historic house at 358 Sea Street in the Hyannis village of Barnstable, Massachusetts. The 2-1/2 story wood frame house was built c. 1865, and his one of the village's finest Italianate houses. It has roughly square proportions, with an off-center entry flanked by a single-story projecting bay window, both of which are topped by cornices with brackets. Above them are three sash windows with projecting lintels, and there is a round-arch window in the gable. The roof line is studded with paired brackets. There is a period barn on the property which is topped by a cupola. Its first owner was a ship's captain. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Capt. Allen H. Bearse House

The Capt. Allen H. Bearse House is a historic house at 48 Camp Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The 2 1⁄2-story wood frame house was built in 1857, and is an exceptionally well preserved example of Italianate styling. It features corner pilasters, bracketed eaves and a wraparound porch with bracketed columns. The house was owned by Allen Bearse, a prominent local deep-water ship's captain who also owned a wharf in Hyannis. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Capt. Seth Baker Jr. House

The Capt. Seth Baker Jr. House is a historic house at 35 Main Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA. This modest 1.5 story wood frame house was built c. 1850 by Seth Baker, Jr., a ship's captain. It is in a simple vernacular Federalist/Greek Revival transitional style, with a Federal-style center entry with a tall frieze and projecting cornice. The house is somewhat simple for a ship's captain, whose houses are usually more elaborate. Baker's grandson Walter founded the Colonial Candle Company. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Capt. Sylvester Baxter House

The Capt. Sylvester Baxter House is a historic house at 156 Main Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The 2-1/2 story wood frame Italianate house was built c. 1855 by Captain Sylvester Baxter, a politically prominent local ship's captain. The house exterior has been stuccoed, and the roof is a cross-gable style with a square cupola on top. The eaves of the roof and cupola are studded with decorative brackets. The windows are topped by stilted segmented arches. The front entrance is sheltered by a hip-roofed porch supported by clusters of round columns. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Capt. Thomas Gray House

The Capt. Thomas Gray House is a historic house at 14 Main Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The 2-1/2 story wood frame house was built c. 1875, and is a locally rare example of Stick style design. It is T-shaped in plan, with varied gables that have applied stickwork decoration, and its windows have boldly stylized pediments. The property also includes a period barn with cupola. Its owner, Thomas Gray, was a prominent local captain of steamships. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Capt. William Hallett House

The Capt. William Hallett House is a historic house at 570 Main Street in the Hyannis village of Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA. This 1-1/2 story wood frame house was built c. 1800, and exhibits a distinctive combination of Federal and Queen Anne styling. While its basic form is that of a Federal-style Cape, it was altered in the late 19th century, adding a shed-roof dormer with an eyebrow section, a porch with turned posts, and a projecting window bay. In the mid-19th century the house belonged to William Hallett, a ship's captain, and around the turn of the 20th century by Dr. Charles Harris, a noted local physician and author of Hyannis Sea Captains. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1987.

Collen C. Campbell House

The Collen C. Campbell House is a historic house at 599 Main Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The 1.5 story Cape style cottage was built c. 1920, and is distinctive as the only house of the period to be converted to commercial use without compromising its historic character. The ony significant alteration from its original Arts and Crafts styling is the addition of larger commercial windows flanking the center entry. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Crowell-Smith House

Built on Main Street c. 1775, it is a well-preserved early Federal period house locally unusual for its rear chimney plan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Lemuel B. Chase House

The Lemuel B. Chase House is a historic house at 340 Scudder Avenue in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The 1-3/4 story wood frame house was built sometime in the 1820s, and is a well-preserved side-hall entry Greek Revival house with a 1-1/2 story wing. It has wide corner boards supporting a fascia with dentil moulding. The main entry is flanked by sidelight windows and pilasters supporting a full entablature; a side entrance in the wing is similarly styled except for the windows. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Lot Crocker House

The Lot Crocker House is a historic house at 284 Gosnold Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The 1-1/2 story wood frame Cape style house was built c. 1800. It is five bays wide, with a side gable roof and twin interior chimneys, an unusual feature of houses of the period, which more typically have a central chimney. It has a center entry that is topped by a transom window. Lot Crocker, member of a locally prominent family, lived in this house in the mid-19th century and operated a nearby salt works. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Hyannis Youth and Community Center

The Hyannis Youth and Community Center is a community center in the town of Barnstable, Massachusetts. It consists of two ice skating rinks, one being named after the late Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., who was killed when his B-24 Liberator exploded during a bombing mission. The smaller capacity rink, named after a Barnstable philanthropist, Patrick Butler, who died in 2009, can be melted down leaving a concrete floor for dry floor activities. A removable event floor can be placed over the ice in either rink for other short term non-ice events. The large Gymnasium offers six basketball hoops, removable bleacher seating and a curtain to break the space down into two full basketball or volleyball courts for maximum usage. A 1/12 mile elevated Walking Track above the courts offers a safe indoor environment.

Capt. Rodney J. Baxter House

The Capt. Rodney J. Baxter House is an octagonal house in Barnstable, Massachusetts that was built in 1850. It appears to be the only house explicitly credited by the U.S. National Register of Historic Places to having been designed by Orson S. Fowler that both survives and is listed on the National Register. Orson Fowler is known for having advocated octagonal house design, promoted through an architectural pattern book The Octagon House, A Home for All that he wrote and which was the basis for designs of numerous houses. It seems this house is explicitly described in Orson Fowler's book, or it explicitly follows a design given in that book. Other houses built according to Fowler's designs also survive and are listed on the NRHP. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Canary-Hartnett House

The Canary-Hartnett House is a historic house at 113 Winter Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts. This well-preserved 1 1⁄2-story wood frame building was built c. 1860, and has simple Greek Revival styling. It is four asymmetrical bays wide, with the main entrance in the left bay, and three evenly spaced sash windows to its right. It has a side gable roof, with a chimney rising through the ridge behind the entrance. The front of the house is finished in clapboards, while the remaining walls are finished in wood shingles. The house is one of the oldest in the area to be associated with the early wave of Irish settlers to arrive after the Irish Potato Famine. The property includes a barn that dates to the same period. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Capt. Oliver Bearse House

The Capt. Oliver Bearse House is a historic house at 31 Pearl Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The 2.5 story wood frame house was built c. 1841, and is a well-preserved local instance of Greek Revival styling. It has corner pilasters and an entablature that wraps around the main block. Its entry is flanked by sidelight windows and pilasters, and topped by a heavy lintel and entablature. Its owner was a deep-water ship's captain. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Dr. Edward Francis Gleason House

The Dr. Edward Francis Gleason House is a historic house at 88 Lewis Bay Road in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The two story wood frame house was built c. 1790, and is a fine local example of Federal styling. It has an L shape, with intersecting hip roofs, and two interior chimneys. The main entry is centered on the five-bay front facade, and is elaborately framed with sidelight windows and a fanlight, and is sheltered by a portico with Tuscan columns. The house is notable for its association with Dr. Edward Francis Gleason, founder of Cape Cod Hospital, and for its ownership by Timothy Baker, a ship's captain engaged in the coasting trade. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

S. Alexander Hinckley House

The S. Alexander Hinckley House is a historic First Period house at 151 Pine Street in the Hyannis section of Barnstable, Massachusetts. The 1-1/2 story Cape house was built c. 1710, and is one of a small number of early 18th-century houses in Hyannis. It is the full five bays wide and two deep, with an ell added to the rear, and a central chimney. It was also home to Ora Hinckley, the first librarian of the Hyannis Library, around the turn of the 20th century. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Seth Hallett House

The Seth Hallett House is a historic house at 110 Main Street in the Hyannis village of Barnstable, Massachusetts. Built in 1775, this 1-1/2 story Cape house is one of the few surviving Federal style houses on Main Street in Hyannis. In the mid-19th century it was occupied by Seth Hallett, a town selectman. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Hyannis Rear Range Light

The Hyannis Rear Range Light, also known as the Hyannis Harbor Light, was a lighthouse and, for part of its life, one of a pair of range lights adjacent to Hyannis Harbor. The Range Rear tower was built in 1849 and equipped with a 5th order Fresnel lens in 1856. In 1863 the original birdcage lantern was replaced with a new cast iron one. In 1885, a front range light was added on the Old Colony Railroad Wharf, and the two lights together served to leading vessels to the wharf. The 20 foot Range Rear tower is shorter than most lighthouses, as its purpose was just to guide ships to the wharf. In the early 1800s, the railroad extended from its current terminus at the Hyannis Transportation Center, down what is now Old Colony Road to Harbor Road, where it ended in the 300 foot wharf that was a busy area for shipping coal, lumber, grain and fish. Over time, as the channel into the adjacent Lewis Bay was dredged deeper, there was a shift of traffic into Lewis Bay and Hyannis inner harbor, and the wharf fell into disuse. The lights were discontinued in 1929 and the front range light has disappeared along with the wharf, although the outline of the wharf can still be seen in aerial photographs. The lantern was removed from the rear light before it was sold. In 1987 a new, much larger lantern room was added to the top of the tower, acting as a sunroom. The lighthouse is now privately owned but can be seen on Google Street view or directly from Harbor Road in Hyannis.

The Building at 237—239 Main Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts is a historic commercial building constructed in 1910. It is a two story wood frame retail block, which has retained even its original storefronts. It has a narrow cornice with plain brackets, and some second-floor windows are paired and headed by triangular pediments. It is notable for the survival without significant alterations of even its storefronts, and is one of a small number of surviving commercial buildings form that period in Hyannis. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The Building at 600 Main Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts is a historic commercial building built in 1920. It is a 1-1/2 story wood frame building whose gable roof is pierced by a three-part dormer surrounded by a balustrade. The building has retained almost all of its original details, more so than the nearly-identical building at 595 Main Street, which has not. The building is a high quality local example of commercial Colonial Revival architecture, and is typical of the area's gradual transformation into a commercial area in the early 20th century. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The Building at 614 Main Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts is a modest commercial building built in 1910, during the area's main period of development as a commercial district. Stylistically, the single story wood frame building is similar to 606 Main Street, although it has more obvious Arts and Crafts features, including exposed rafters. The building has a gable roof, whose front slope includes a shed-roof dormer providing access to storage space above the stores. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Its anchor stores are Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Sears, Marshalls, Macy's and Macy's women's/accessories store. In addition, the mall features a food court and a twelve screen, stadium style movie theater. Cape Cod Mall is managed by Simon Property Group, which owns 49.1% of it. The mall currently has a gross leasable area of 821,000 square feet following the completion of the late 1990s expansion, as well as the addition of a two-story, 30,000 square feet Barnes & Noble Bookstore in 2000, and a minor expansion to the previous Filene's department store (from 80,000 square feet (7,400 m2) to 100,000 square feet (9,300 m2)), which became Macy's women's and accessories store in April 2007.

Cape Cod Hospital is a not-for-profit regional medical center located in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Founded in 1920, as of 2011 it is the largest hospital on Cape Cod. The current administration is headed by CEO Michael K. Lauf. The hospital has 283 beds with more than 1,700 employees and 300 physicians on staff. It has an extensive cardiac care service in a partnership with Harvard University Medical School affiliate Brigham and Women's Hospital. The emergency department is one of the busiest in Massachusetts, providing emergency services to more than 84,000 patients on an annual basis.

W. Leo Shields Memorial Field

W. Leo Shields Memorial Field is the sports field on the campus of Barnstable High School, in the Cape Cod area. It is named after W. Leo Shields, who was an all-star athlete, coach, athletic director, and many other things during his 48 years of life. It is home to the Barnstable Red Raiders and formerly to the Cape Cod Crusaders. Current plans are for an expansion to be completed in the coming years. These plans include a new press box and expanded bleachers for the opposing teams. During the annual Thanksgiving football game with rival Falmouth High School, the new track and field was unveiled. The field was renovated with a FieldTurf playing surface replacing the grass one as well as a new track to replace the crumbling one that had existed there for almost thirty years.
