Top Attractions in Winchester

Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park

Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park became the 388th unit of the United States National Park Service when it was authorized on December 19, 2002. The National Historical Park was created to protect several historically significant locations in the Shenandoah Valley of Northern Virginia, notably the site of the American Civil War Battle of Cedar Creek and the Belle Grove Plantation. Although there are over 3,700 acres within the park’s authorized boundary, over half of this is still privately owned. Much of the battlefield is not accessible to the public, but the park offers ranger-led and self-guided driving tours of the battlefield via public roads. Nearly all of the remaining land and buildings are preserved and administered by partner sites which predate the park. Since summer 2010, the park has offered interpretive ranger programs at key partner sites, including Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation headquarters, Belle Grove Plantation, and Hupp’s Hill Civil War Park. In 2012, the park acquired land on which sits a monument to the 8th Vermont Infantry and now offers access through semi-regular programs at the site. In March 2013, the park opened a Visitor Contact Station in Middletown, Virginia, featuring interpretive exhibits and information on how visitors can experience the park. The Cedar Creek Battlefield and Belle Grove is also a U.S. National Historic Landmark. and the 900-acre "Cedar Creek Battlefield and Belle Grove", is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The plantation house of Belle Grove is open to the public and operates independently as part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Fort Loudoun

Fort Loudoun was a historic fortification of the French and Indian War, located in what is now Winchester, Virginia. The fort was built between 1756 and 1758 under the supervision of George Washington, then a colonel in the militia of the British Province of Virginia. It was named for John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun, who commanded the British forces in North America for a time during the war. Washington and his militia regiment were headquartered at the fort for two years. The fort was a roughly square bastioned earthworks, whose extent spread across where North Loudoun Street runs. The property at 419 North Loudoun encompasses the historic heart of the fort, including a well dating to the forts construction, and a portion of its northwest bastion. This area has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This property is now owned by the non-profit French and Indian War Foundation.

Winchester Historic District

The Winchester Historic District is a national historic district located at Winchester, Virginia. The district encompasses 1,116 contributing buildings in Winchester. The buildings represent an variety of popular architectural styles including Late Victorian and Italianate. They include residential, commercial, governmental, industrial, and institutional buildings dating from the 18th to mid-20th centuries. Notable buildings include the A.M.E Church, Masonic Lodge and Gray and Eddy Building, First Presbyterian Church, Farmers and Merchants Bank, Frederick County Courthouse, Grace Lutheran Church, Friendship Fire Hall, John Kerr School, City Hall, Lewis Jones Knitting Mill, Tidball Residence, William F. Hottle Residence, McGuire Residence, and Robert Long House . Located in the district are the separately listed Thomas J. Jackson Headquarters, Fair Mount, Handley Library, Adam Kurtz House, and Daniel Morgan House. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, with boundary increases in 2003 and 2008.

Triangle Diner

The Triangle Diner is a quintessential American diner in Winchester, Virginia. It was built in 1948 by the Jerry O'Mahony Diner Company of Elizabeth, New Jersey. It is one of the best preserved classic diners in America, with close to 100% of the original features still intact. Key features include elaborate stainless steel ornamentation on the exterior, rounded interior ceiling with hidden lighting cove on all sides, a counter with stools and booths for patron seating, and terrazzo concrete floor. O'Mahony was one of the most significant and prolific diner manufacturing companies of all time and is often regarded as the company that set the highest standards for diner construction quality and craftsmanship. Every aspect of the structure's form and function was very carefully designed and optimized. O'Mahony is considered a father of the American diner and builder of the "Cadillac" of American diners. His company's work served as an inspiration for other diner manufacturers throughout the 1940s and 1950s. The Triangle Diner is an outstanding example of "Moderne architectural features" that are representative of the stainless steel prefabricated diners of the post-World War II era. The entire diner building approximately 43 by 16 feet was built at the O'Mahony Diner Company factory in New Jersey and once fully complete was then transported by train nearly 300 miles to Winchester, Virginia. It has been at the same busy intersection in Winchester since it first arrived there, more than 60 years ago. While diners of this design somewhat resemble and are often confused with railroad cars removed from their wheels, these buildings were never railroad cars. The Triangle Diner was listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior on March 31, 2010, and was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register on December 17, 2009. The building is currently closed pending completion of a very comprehensive historic restoration, including roof repair, and upgrades to plumbing, air conditioning/heating and electrical systems. It will also feature an upgraded and enlarged kitchen in the rear of the diner building. The Triangle Diner is the older of only two stainless steel O’Mahony diners in Virginia. Of the more than 2,000 O'Mahony diners once built, only a few dozen still remain nationwide.

Daniel Morgan House

Daniel Morgan House, also known as the George Flowerdew Norton House, Boyd House, and Sherrard House, is a historic home located at Winchester, Virginia. It is a 2 1/2-story, seven bay, 17 room, Late Georgian style brick dwelling. It has a side-gable roof and paired double interior chimneys. The oldest section was built about 1786 for George Flowerdew Norton, and the western stuccoed brick wing was built for Daniel Morgan about 1800. A brick kitchen, built about 1820 is attached to the north side of the dwelling and two-story addition, constructed about 1885, is attached to the northwest corner of the house. A one room addition was added to the eastern side about 1890, and a second-story room was built above the back porch about 1915. Also on the property is a contributing coursed stone retaining wall . It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. It is located in the Winchester Historic District. Gen.Daniel Morgan died in this house on July 6, 1802. The house then was the home of his daughter.
