Lee Chapel

Lee Chapel is a National Historic Landmark in Lexington, Virginia, on the campus of Washington and Lee University. It was constructed during 1867–68 at the request of Robert E. Lee, who was President of the University at the time, and after whom the building is named. The Victorian brick architectural design was probably the work of his son, George Washington Custis Lee, with details contributed by Col. Thomas Williamson, an architect and professor of engineering at the neighboring Virginia Military Institute. General Lee, along with much of the rest of the Lexington community, attended church services at Grace Episcopal Church, a hundred yards south, at the edge of the college campus. When Lee died in 1870, he was buried beneath the chapel. His body remains there to this day, and for this reason among others, the Chapel is one of Lexingtons major historical tourist attractions. A centerpiece on the stage of the chapel—where the pulpit would be in a less secular place of worship—is a statue of Lee, in his uniform, asleep on the battlefield, designed by Edward Valentine. On the walls are two paintings: one of General Washington himself, by Charles Willson Peale, from the Washington family collections, and the other of Lee in his uniform, painted by Edward Pine. There is also a plaque given by the Sigma Society on one of the walls that honors two Sigma alumni from the classes of 1912 and 1915 who lost their lives in World War I. In the basement a crypt contains much of Lees direct family: the General himself, his wife Mary, his seven children, and his parents—Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee, who had been a general during the Revolutionary War, and Anne Carter Lee. Lees favorite horse, Traveller, is buried just outside the Chapel, where students of Washington and Lee traditionally leave coins or apples in hopes of being compensated with good fortune in their studies. In the basement of the Chapel is a museum that illuminates the history of the family of George Washington and Lee as well as that of the university itself. Lees office has been meticulously preserved in almost exactly the same condition as it was when he died. Further, the Chapel continues to play an important role in the modern operation of Washington and Lee. It seats about 600 in its main area and a small, three-sided balcony. Freshmen are brought there to hear a lecture from the President of the Universitys student-run Executive Committee on the schools famous Honor System. Important school-wide lectures, concerts, and other notable activities are also held here from time to time. On August 6, 2014, the confederate flags in the chapel were removed after student protest. It was then agreed that the chapels original flags, which were retired in the 1990s due to deterioration, were to be put on display on a rotating basis in the chapels museum. Lee Chapel was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1963. It is open for tours based on the following schedule: Apr 1 Oct 31: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays Nov 1 Mar 31: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays

Reid-White-Philbin House

Reid-White-Philbin House, also known as Evergreen House, is a historic home located at Lexington, Virginia. It was built in 1821, and is a two-story, Federal style brick dwelling. It features an early entry porch supported by Ionic order columns A two-story brick addition was made to the left-hand gable end in 1847. The addition has a two-tier front portico and a post-bellum conservatory with bay window. Attached to the rear is a 1 1/2-story stone kitchen wing dated to the second half of the 18th century. Also on the property is a contributing early- to mid-19th century dependency. It was built for locally prominent businessman, educator, and politician Samuel McDowell Reid. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It is located in the Lexington Historic District.

Lexington and Covington Turnpike Toll House

Lexington and Covington Turnpike Toll House is a historic toll house located at Lexington, Virginia. The original section was built about 1834, as a two-room brick structure. A board-and-batten frame ell was added between 1865 and 1867. Two additional rooms were added to the original structure in the 1870s, forming a "U"-shape. In 1887, a Victorian style front porch was added to the original brick structure. The house was sheathed in weatherboard in 1904, and an addition filling in the "U" was added. The house was rehabilitated between 1997 and 2004. Also on the property are the contributing ruins of a spring house. The building housed a toll house into the 1850s, then became a dwelling. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Lexington Presbyterian Church

Lexington Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church building at Main and Nelson Streets in Lexington, Virginia. It was designed by noted architect Thomas U. Walter in 1843, and completed in 1845. A rear addition was built in 1859; stucco added in the 1880s; the building was renovated and enlarged in 1899; and the Sunday School wing was added in 1906. It is a monumental "T"-shaped, temple form stuccoed brick building in the Greek Revival style. The front facade features a Greek Doric pedimented peristyle portico consisting of six wooden columns and a full entablature. The building is topped by a tower with louvered belfry and spire. Starting in 1851, Stonewall Jackson was a member of the church and taught Sunday school. In 1863 he was buried in the church's cemetery which is now named for him. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It is located in the Lexington Historic District.

Washington and Lee University

Washington and Lee University is a private liberal arts university in Lexington, Virginia, United States. Washington and Lees 325 acre campus sits at the heart of Lexington and abuts the Virginia Military Institute in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains. The rural campus is approximately 50 miles from Roanoke, Virginia, 140 miles from Richmond, Virginia, and 180 miles from Washington, D.C. Washington and Lee was founded in 1749 as a small classical school by Scots-Irish Presbyterian pioneers, though the University has never claimed any sectarian affiliation. In 1796, George Washington endowed the struggling academy with a gift of stock. In gratitude, the school was renamed for the first United States President. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee served as president of the college until his death in 1870, prompting the college to be renamed as Washington and Lee University. Washington and Lee is the ninth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and the second oldest in Virginia. The University consists of three academic units: The College; the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics; and the School of Law. The University hosts 24 intercollegiate athletic teams which compete as part of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference of the NCAA Division III.

Blandome

Blandome is a historic home located at Lexington, Virginia. It was built about 1830, and is a two-story, five-bay, Federal / Greek Revival style brick dwelling. It was remodeled in 1872 in the Italianate style. The house features a metal-sheathed hipped roof capped by a belvedere and a three-bay front porch and front entrance with a richly ornamented surround. Also on the property are a contributing seven-sided law office building , garage , and ice chest . Blandome was the home of John Thomas Lewis Preston in the 1830s, who is regarded as the catalyst in the creation of the Virginia Military Institute. It was also the home of John Randolph Tucker from 1872 to 1875 and again from 1889 until his death in 1897. In 1917, Blandome was acquired by African American business leader Harry Lee Walker, whose wife Eliza Bannister Walker championed numerous social and educational causes. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Mountain View Farm

Mountain View Farm, also known as Pioneer Farms, is a historic home and farm complex located near Lexington, Rockbridge County, Virginia. The main house was built in 1854, and is a two-story, three-bay, brick dwelling, with a 1 1/2-story gabled kitchen and servant's wing, and one-story front and back porches. It features a Greek Revival style interior and has a standing seam metal hipped roof. The property includes an additional 13 contributing buildings and 3 contributing structures loosely grouped into a domestic complex and two agricultural complexes. They include a two-story, frame spring house / wash house, a frame meathouse, a one-room brick building that probably served as a secondary dwelling, a double-crib log barn, a large multi-use frame barn, a slatted corn crib with side and central wagon bays and a large granary. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Virginia Military Institute

The Virginia Military Institute is a state-supported military college in Lexington, Virginia, the oldest such institution in the United States. Unlike any other senior military college in the United States, and in keeping with its founding principles, VMI enrolls only military cadets and awards baccalaureate degrees exclusively. VMI offers cadets strict military discipline combined with a spartan, physically and academically demanding environment. The Institute grants degrees in 14 disciplines in engineering, the sciences, and the liberal arts. While VMI has been called the "West Point of the South", it differs from the federal service academies in several respects. For example, the living conditions at VMI are far more austere than at the service academies. Also, while all cadets must participate in the Reserve Officers Training Corps, they are afforded the flexibility of pursuing civilian endeavors or accepting a commission in any of the active or reserve components of any of the US military branches upon graduation.
