Dans Mountain

Dans Mountain is located in Allegany County, Maryland, USA between Georges Creek and the North Branch Potomac River. The highest point on Dans Mountain is called Dan's Rock which has an elevation of 2,895 feet . The mountain rises 2,200 feet above the town of LaVale and the summit is the highest point in Allegany County. Although there are higher points in Maryland, Dans Mountain has the most impressive escarpment of Maryland's mountains. It is essentially continuous with the longer escarpment that continues both north and south known as the Allegheny Front. Dans Mountain State Park is located along a 16-mile stretch of the mountain, 9 miles south of Frostburg, Maryland. Dan's Rock Overlook is the highest scenic overlook in the park. The park also features a pond that is stocked annually, an Olympic-sized pool with a modern bathhouse, and concession stands. Dans Mountain is named for Daniel Cresap, one of the first settlers in Allegany County. Cresap was known for being adventurous, often hunting with a Delaware Indian named Nemacolin. While pursuing a bear in a tree, Daniel fell and lay unconscious until Nemacolin found him, and dragged Daniel home to safety. Since that event, the mountain has been known as Dans Mountain. Dan's Mountain Wildlife Management Area protects the mountain in an area covering 9,504 acres.

Frostburg State University

Frostburg State University (often referred to as FSU) is a public student-centered teaching and learning institution located on a 260-acre (1.1 km2) campus in Frostburg, Maryland. The University is the only four-year institution of the University System of Maryland west of the Baltimore-Washington passageway, positioned in the state's Appalachian highlands, an area rich in its mining and educational heritage. Founded in 1898 by Maryland Governor Lloyd Lowndes, Jr., Frostburg was selected because the site offered the best suitable location without a cost to the state. Today, the institution is a largely residential university, offering a wide assortment of distinctive programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. With a fall 2015 enrollment of 5,756 students, the University offers 44 different undergraduate majors, 17 graduate programs and a doctorate in educational leadership. The institution draws its students from all counties in Maryland, from other states and countries, promoting diversity among its students, faculty, and staff through incorporating its Cultural Diversity Program strategies that focus on the effective enrollment. Accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the University places primary emphasis on its role as a teaching and learning institution. Faculty and professional staff engage in a wide range of scholarly activities and professional involvement, with the ultimate goal of enhancing student learning. Major areas of concentration are offered in education, business, science and technology, the creative and performing arts, and selected programs in the humanities and social sciences. The University officially became a charter member of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), A commitment that provides a framework and support network for American colleges and universities to eventually go climate neutral.

God's Ark of Safety

Gods Ark of Safety is a non-denominational Christian ministry in Frostburg, Maryland, led by Pastor Richard Greene. On Easter, 1976, Greene began building a replica of Noahs Ark atop a prominent hillside along what is now Interstate 68 featuring a sign that announces to passing travelers: "Noahs Ark Being Rebuilt Here!" Ground was broken for the ark in September 1976 with over 3,000 tons of concrete. It was built to biblical proportions, around 450 by 75 by 45 feet, which is about one and a half football fields long. Pastor Greenes main inspiration for building the ark came from a three-part dream highlighting Noahs Ark and his vision of salvation for the people of this Earth. The vision began in the spring of 1974. The vision was to buy three acres of land from the farmer who owned it and build the ark. The three acres of land would not be enough to build the Ark so he was told by God to not ask the farmer to buy more land, but; instead ask the farmer to give it to him. The pastor currently owns the four acres where the structure still stands along with the church as well. Pastor Greene claims that the land itself has curative and restorative powers. It took the pastor and the church fifteen years to save up $200,000 to start the project. The pastor has been to 32 countries across the world; spreading the word of God and his vision for him to build an Ark on the land and potentially raise money and accept donations for his vision. The story of the rebuilding of the Ark has been spread all across the world and reporters and visitors have come from as far as China to witness what was taking place. It has been in People magazine, the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press, the Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong, China, BBC in London, England, and NBC news. As of 2013, the structure is still just a frame, but the incomplete Ark has drawn attention from foreign film crews and national publications, and Pastor Greene has promoted the ministry on worldwide tours, his own radio and television show, and The 700 Club. The 700 Club is an evangelical Christian television show. It has even appeared in People, as well as other widely read magazines. According to Greene, Gods Ark of Safety supports 20 missionaries worldwide. The completed ark will hold anywhere from 1,500-1,700 people with a gymnasium and theatre. The ark will also contain a Christian grade school, high school, and bible college. Pastor Greene believes that the ark today would require 30-50 million dollars to complete. The church today is still receiving donations which are funneled into a building fund supported by the church and surrounding community. Although funding for the church has been continuous for the past 25 years the pastor still remains committed to the project, saying "If you wait on the lord it will renew your strength." The Ark is featured on the front cover and chapter 4 of Timothy Beals book Roadside Religion: In Search of the Sacred, the Strange, and the Substance of Faith. In the book Scrambled Eggs at Midnight by Frostburg writer Brad Barkley, there is a reference to the Ark in the pre-chapter section listing places that one should see when traveling across the country. It is also mentioned in Barkleys story "The Way Its Lasted."
