Top Attractions in Cedar Falls

UNI-Dome

UNI-Dome is a multi-purpose stadium, on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, United States. It opened in 1976, as the home of the UNI Panthers basketball and football teams. The facility's capacity for football is 16,324. For basketball, its official capacity is 16,000; however, it has seated as many as 22,000 for events such as the 1990 Mid-Continent Conference men’s basketball tournament and the 1997 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships. It has been the home of the Iowa State High School football championships, since 1976 and has hosted junior college football bowl games, wrestling, track and field, softball, concerts and conventions. In 1994, the air-supported roof collapsed in a snowstorm. Since this had occurred on numerous occasions before, it was replaced by a more permanent metal roof. On November 18, 2006, the McLeod Center opened for basketball, volleyball, and wrestling. The McLeod Center is directly south of the UNI-Dome and connected by a covered walkway. The UNI-Dome attendance record for football is 17,190, which was set on October 17, 2009, during a Panthers homecoming game against the Missouri Valley rival Southern Illinois. The UNI-Dome's roof has been most recently renovated late summer 2010 due to damages during a high wind storm. The cost of the renovation was close to $4 million. The storm knocked down trees, power lines and roofs all over Cedar Falls. The University of Northern Iowa campus lost 20% of its 100+-year-old trees that cover the campus. The UNI-Dome received a new HD video board for the start of the 2008 football season. The board replaced an aging, and many times malfunctioning video board. Much of the cost of the new video board was donated by the Iowa High School Athletic Association, which hosts their state football semi-finals and finals in the UNI-Dome each year for all classes. Northern Iowan article In 2014, the UNI-Dome had a 100' × 27' video board installed at the south end. The existing video board has replaced the north end scoreboard. All this was made possible with a grant from the Black Hawk Gaming Assoc., plus a very generous gift. This video board is the second largest in FCS football. The Dome has also hosted professional wrestling events, as well as concerts by bands such as Rolling Stones, The Who, Mötley Crüe, REO Speedwagon, Fleetwood Mac, 3 Doors Down, Fuel, Pink Floyd, Oleander, Taylor Swift, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean , and Nelly. During the academic year, during hours when the athletic teams are not using the Dome, it is open to the public. Many students and others with UNI connections will come to the Dome to run or walk the stairs and the concourse. The UNI-Dome has hosted graduation ceremonies as well. Perhaps the most notable ceremony was in the spring of 2011, when first lady Michelle Obama delivered the headlining address. At football games, where cold temperatures are frequently an issue for fans, the UNI-Dome announcers have a tradition during pre-game rituals. The announcers will announce the weather in the town where the visiting team is from, and then will say "The temperature in Cedar Falls, no wind, 72 degrees, Welcome to the UNI-DOME!" to emphasize the fact that a domed stadium is not affected as much by the weather. As of December 1, 2015, the Panthers have a home record of 201-51-1. A major renovation was announced in 2014.

McLeod Center

The McLeod Center is a 6,650-seat multi-purpose arena on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, currently housing the school's teams in men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, and wrestling. The arena opened November 18, 2006 with a volleyball game against Bradley. The other three UNI teams made their debuts in the facility over the next three days—men's basketball versus Milwaukee on November 19, women's basketball against Iowa State on November 20, and wrestling versus Iowa on November 21. The McLeod Center replaced the UNI-Dome as the home of the school's basketball teams and West Gymnasium as the home of the volleyball and wrestling teams. The McLeod Center is located on the west end of the campus, directly south of the UNI-Dome and connected by a covered walkway that also houses an extensive athletic hall of fame. A video board is located on the south wall with home and visiting team scoreboards on either side showing the player's game information. There are two scoreboards on the north side and ribbon boards above the concession stands on the east and west sides. Since opening, the arena has had quite a significant positive economic impact for the university. It brings in $20-25 million annually, doubled the attendance of basketball games, and has almost 400,000 total visitors a year. The arena also hosts commencement ceremonies throughout the year and can be used for recreation upon request. During the 2009-2010 and 2014-2015 Men's basketball seasons, the team went undefeated at the McLeod Center. This can be attributed to the fact that during UNI basketball games, it can become notoriously noisy, especially in the rowdy student section. It was rumored that the noise reached 100.3 decibels during an upset of then-#1 North Carolina in the 2015-16 season.

Black Hawk Hotel

The Black Hawk Hotel is an historic building located in downtown Cedar Falls, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. A hotel has occupied the same site in Cedar Falls since the early 1850s. The hotels have occupied two different buildings and had several names over the years. The Winslow House was a wood frame stage coach hotel that was built c. 1853. It was renamed the Western in 1858, and an additional floor was added to the building. In the 1860s the hotel was renamed the Carter House. In the late 1870s the present Second Empire building was built and named the Davis House. The ownership of the hotel transferred to the Burr family in 1885 and it was renamed Burr’s Hotel. Waterloo architect John Ralston was hired by a group of investors in 1914 to redesign the hotel building. The renovation made the structure a combination of the Second Empire and Mission styles. It was at this time that the hotel was named the Blackhawk.

University of Northern Iowa

The University of Northern Iowa is a university located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, United States. UNI offers more than 90 majors across the colleges of Business Administration, Education, Humanities, Arts, and Sciences, and Social and Behavioral sciences, and graduate college. UNI has consistently been named one of the "Best in the Midwest" in the Princeton Review Best 351 College Rankings guide, and has ranked second in the category "public regional universities (Midwest)" by U.S. News & World Report for twelve consecutive years. UNI's accounting program has consistently ranked in the top 10 universities in the nation for the pass rate of first-time candidates on the CPA Exam. Class sizes at UNI average around 32 students; they are mostly taught by faculty, not teaching assistants. Tenured and tenure-track faculty teach 75 percent of UNI's classes. The Fall 2013 enrollment is 12,159. Ninety-two percent of its students are from the State of Iowa, in the United States. For students interested in studying abroad, UNI is ranked fourth in the nation for the total number of students who study abroad among master's degree institutions, according to Open Doors 2002, the annual report on international education published by the Institute of International Education.
