Adamson Bridge

The Adamson Bridge near Valentine in Cherry County, Nebraska, is or was a historic bridge. It is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The bridge was built in 1916 by the Canton Bridge Co.. It was a timber stringer trestle bridge. It has also been known as the Niobrara River Bridge and has been denoted as NEHBS No. CE00-227. When it was listed on the National Register, the bridge was notable as one of few surviving examples in Nebraska of early timber bridge designs. The Adamson Bridge appeared to have survived with few alterations due to relatively light traffic at its location. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The river crossing was apparently replaced by a concrete beam bridge crossing, at a different crossing point, ca. 1994. Aerial photo view of the coordinates given in the NRHP nomination suggest the highway alignment has changed, showing roads leading to a former crossing point but with no bridge remaining.

Niobrara National Scenic River

The Niobrara National Scenic River is located in north-central Nebraska, United States, approximately 300 miles northwest of Omaha. In 1991, Congress set aside 76 miles along two stretches of the Niobrara River for preservation under the management of the National Park Service with assistance from the local Niobrara Council. Several "outstandingly remarkable values" have been designated to be protected along the Niobrara National Scenic River, including: Fish and Wildlife, Scenery, Fossil Resources, High Water Quality, and Recreation. The river was designated by Backpacker magazine as one of the 10 best rivers for canoeing in the United States. Along the National Scenic River are numerous waterfalls that empty into the river from the surrounding cliff and canyon walls; the highest one is Smith Falls, which drops almost 63 feet into the river valley. There are short sections of Class I and II rapids on the river itself, and several locations further downstream require a portage around the rapids. The westernmost 26 miles of the Scenic River section, from the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge to the Rocky Ford portage, offer outstanding canoeing, kayaking, tubing and fishing opportunities. Although the remainder of the river is also able to be paddled, public access is limited by private landholder permission. Around 70,000 people visit the river annually, with the months of June through August being the busiest. Water levels do decline slightly in late summer; however, the river can still be tralled by canoe, kayak, and inner tube. To reach the first public access on the Scenic River section, drive northeast of Valentine on Nebraska Highway 12 until the sign for the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge put-in. Considered a superb example of a Great Plains river, the Niobrara is home to over 500 plant species many at or beyond their usual range, including many not otherwise found within several hundred miles, These species include birch, ponderosa pine and aspen . Species from six different biomes can be found in proximity here. Northern boreal forest types occur on north facing slopes where shade and abundant ground water create cooler microclimates. Species growing here include paper birch, basswood, aspen, ferns and club mosses. Rocky Mountain forest plants include ponderosa pine, serviceberry, and horizontal juniper. Eastern deciduous forests grow on the moist bottom lands and islands of the Niobrara. They include American elm, cottonwood, green ash, bur oak, hackberry and box elder. Three types of prairie are found in the river valley, displaying a botanical transition between among the eastern tallgrass prairie, the mixed grass prairie of the Sandhills, and the western shortgrass prairie. Mule deer, beaver, mink, antelope, coyote and even bison can be found in the area as well. Approximately 400 bison and a few dozen elk are protected in the 19,000 acre Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, which is located along the river. In the Niobrara river, minnows such as sand shiners, red shiners and flathead chubs search for their food of aquatic insects near streambank margins. Larger fish, such as rainbow and brown trout, prefer cooler, clear water where springbranch canyon tributaries enter the river. Channel catfish, a popular game fish, prefer deeper waters or cover during the day and feed at night in the riffles. Softshell, snapping or painted turtles may be found sunning on logs in summer.

F.M. Walcott House

The F.M. Walcott House, located at 431 N. Hall St. in Valentine, Nebraska, United States, is a historic Classical Revival style house that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was listed on the National Register in 1982. According to its NRHP nomination, the house was deemed locally significant architecturally "as an example of a vernacular Neo-Classical Revival dwelling, based upon earlier upright-with-wing or templeform houses common to the Greek Revival style in the eastern and midwestern states" and for association with F. M. Walcott, a county attorney and county judge who had one of the largest legal practices in Nebraska. The vacant property was bought by Walcott in 1892 for $137.50 and the house was built that year. It is now the Walcott Inn.

Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest

The Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest is located in the north-central Sandhills region of the U.S. state of Nebraska. Created on October 15, 1971 (the forest has been some type of protected area since 1902), the forest is named after former Governor Samuel R. McKelvie. Encompassing an area of 116,079 acres (469.76 km2), the forest is a combination of prairie grasslands and pine forest "islands". Most of the existing forested sections were manmade, planted by hand over the past 75 years. The protein content of the native grasses is among the highest found anywhere in the world and numerous lease options are provided to local ranchers. Planted trees include Eastern Juniper, Scots Pine and Ponderosa Pine which continues to need replanting as it is harvested but has also managed to spread throughout the region independently. Indigenous wildlife such as pronghorn, white-tailed deer, mule deer, coyote and fox are plentiful. Of the 150 species of birds known to inhabit the forest, pheasant, grouse, hawk and turkey are the more commonly found. The forest has a small campground. Immediately to the south and east of the national forest is Merritt Reservoir, a dam on the Snake River. The reservoir is stocked with sport fish; it is considered one of the better fishing destinations in Nebraska. Merritt Reservoir is managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The forest is managed by the Forest Service together with Nebraska National Forest and the Buffalo Gap, Fort Pierre, and Oglala National Grasslands from common offices in Chadron, Nebraska. There is a local ranger district office located in Nenzel.

Fort Niobrara Wilderness

The Fort Niobrara Wilderness is located in the U.S. state of Nebraska, near Valentine. Created by an act of Congress in 1976, the wilderness is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and covers an area of 4,635 acres within Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge. The wilderness lies along the northern banks of the Niobrara River (which is designated as the Niobrara National Scenic River through the refuge and beyond), providing sanctuary to bison, prairie dogs, mule deer, river otter and the threatened bald eagle. A mixture of flat prairie and wooded ravines, there are no maintained trails in the wilderness. Access is only allowed during daylight hours and there is no camping or fires allowed, although one can do so outside the wilderness in the remaining sections of the refuge. Additionally, no hunting is allowed in this wilderness. U.S. Wilderness Areas do not allow motorized or mechanized vehicles, including bicycles. Although camping and fishing are allowed with a proper permit, no roads or buildings are constructed and there is also no logging or mining, in compliance with the 1964 Wilderness Act. Wilderness areas within National Forests and Bureau of Land Management areas also allow hunting (in season).

Bryan Bridge

The Bryan Bridge brings U.S. Route 20 over the Niobrara River in Cherry County, Nebraska, near Valentine. It was built in 1932 and is a pin-connected arch bridge that is designated "Most Beautiful Steel Bridge" in its year, out of bridges costing less than $250,000, by the American Institute of Steel Construction. It is named after then-sitting Nebraska governor Charles W. Bryan. According to its NRHP nomination, it is significant "in the area of structural engineering on a state level as an excellent and well-preserved example of a pin-connected cantilever arch bridge. It is the only one of its kind in Nebraska." The NRHP nominator interviewed its designer, Josef Sorkin of the states Division of Bridge Design, on why he chose this type of design, and reported that he replied ""aesthetics, it blended into the surroundings and it was also an economical design for the site." Cantilever arch structures, which have been infrequently used nationwide, were constructed in the mid 1920s to mid 1930s. The cantilever type of truss bridge permitted longer spans and was typically used for spanning major rivers." National Register designation was given in 1988. It is also designated as NeHBS #CE00-28.
