Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge

Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge is a 48,000 acres National Wildlife Refuge located in the U.S. state of Mississippi, in Noxubee, Oktibbeha, and Winston Counties . The refuge serves as a resting and feeding area for migratory birds and as example of proper land stewardship. Also, the refuge extensively manages land for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Land for the Noxubee NWR was obtained in the 1930s through the Resettlement Administration. During the 1930s, the land was controlled by the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act. In 1940, the land was established as a National Wildlife Refuge in 1940 to ensure the wetlands would continue to be protected, providing migratory bird species and other animals a safe haven. Of the 48,000 acres of land, approximately 44,500 acres consists of bottomland and upland forest. A variety of species inhabit these lands including quail, deer, and turkey. Two major lakes, Bluff with 1,200 acres and Loakfoma with 600 acres provide much of the wetlands within Noxubee. Additionally, there are four green tree reservoirs and sixteen smaller reservoirs which provide a habitat for wood stork, American alligator, bald eagle and other waterfowl. The refuge partners with nearby Mississippi State University in an extensive research program with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Department of Forestry. Originally named the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, the refuge was renamed for Sam D. Hamilton, a former director of the Fish and Wildlife Service, in February 2012.

Humphrey Coliseum

Humphrey Coliseum is a 10,575-seat multi-purpose arena in Starkville, Mississippi, that opened for the 1975-76 basketball season. Nicknamed The Hump, it is home to the Mississippi State University Bulldogs mens and womens basketball teams. It is the largest on-campus basketball arena in the state of Mississippi. The building is the equivalent of seven stories high and is in the shape of an oval 318 long by 268 wide. The outside is marked by regular concrete columns and Mississippi red brick siding, and the school seal adorns the front of the building. In 2004, a center hung scoreboard was provided by the Henry Mize Foundation. The scoreboard features four sides, each with a video screen. In addition to basketball, the arena is a popular venue for concerts, graduation ceremonies, and other events. "The Hump" features a large "Mississippi State" wordmark adorning the middle of the court. The court is rimmed in maroon with "The Hump" written at each corner. The lanes under the goals have the letters "SEC" spelled out in maroon. The building contains two tiers. Though the seating at Humphrey Coliseum is 10,575, the crowd has surpassed capacity 3 times . In 2000, a catwalk was completed which connects Humphrey Coliseum to Dudy Noble Field, Polk-DeMent Stadium, the Bulldogs baseball stadium. It was named for George Duke Humphrey, former president of Mississippi State. It replaced McCarthy Gymnasium, which was built in 1950 and has since been converted to an indoor tennis center. In January 2014, MSU expanded its mobile concessions ordering service to "The Hump", which offers in-seat food delivery to every seat in the arena.

George M. Bryan Airport

George M. Bryan Airport (ICAO: KSTF, FAA LID: STF) is a public use airport in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, United States. It is owned by the City of Starkville and located three nautical miles (6 km) southwest of its central business district. This airport is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a general aviation facility. Also known as Starkville / Oktibbeha County Airport or George M. Bryan Field, the airport was named in honor of World War II veteran and Starkville native George Martin Bryan. Although many U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, this airport is assigned STF by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA (which assigned STF to Stephens Island in Queensland, Australia).
