Hasely Crawford Stadium

The Hasely Crawford Stadium, located in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, is named after Hasely Crawford, uncle of Teresa Crawford the first person from Trinidad and Tobago to win an Olympic gold medal. The National Stadium was inaugurated and formally opened by the Honourable G M Chambers PM of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago 12 June 1982. Currently the stadium has a capacity of 23,000 with the installation of individual seats however on 19 November 1989 Trinidad and Tobago played the USA in a winner takes all WC qualifying match in front of somewhere between 30,000 - 40,000 fans. The National Stadium, which is sometimes used by the Trinidad and Tobago national football team, was officially designated The Hasely Crawford Stadium by Prime Minister Basdeo Panday on Monday 30 December 1996. It hosted the final of the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Championship. It also hosted games at the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. CAPACITY Stadium – 23,000 persons VIP Room – 250 persons (theatre style)

Queen's Park Oval

The Queen's Park Oval is a sports stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Privately owned by the Queen's Park Cricket Club, it is currently the largest capacity cricket ground in the West Indies with seating for about 18,000. It has hosted more Test matches than any other ground in the Caribbean, and also hosted a number of One-Day International matches, including many World Series Cricket games in 1979 and matches of the 2007 Cricket World Cup. The Trinidad and Tobago cricket team play most of their home matches at the ground, and it is the home ground of the Caribbean Premier League team Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel. Considered by many players, journalists and critics as one of the most picturesque cricket venues, the ground first hosted a Test match in February 1930 when England toured the Caribbean, though it had previously hosted many first class tours as early as the 1897 tour under Lord Hawke. The pavilion dates back to 1896, though there were extensive renovations in the 1950s and in 2007 prior to the World Cup and following an earthquake. The "Concrete Stand" was renamed the "Learie Constantine Stand" in recognition of that former West Indies cricketer. The first ODI match at the ground was played in March 1983, and the first Twenty20 International in 2009. As well as the main cricket stadium, the facility includes a gym, indoor and outdoor cricket practice nets, two squash courts and two outdoor tennis courts. The cricket field has also been used to host several domestic and international football matches, and several music events.

Marvin Lee Stadium

Marvin Lee Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Macoya, Trinidad and Tobago which is housed together with the Dr. João Havelange Centre of Excellence. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Joe Public F.C.. The stadium holds approximately 6,000 people. The stadium was named after the National U-20 football captain, a standout defender at the time, who sustained head and neck injuries suffered in a collision with Landon Donovan in an U-20 game versus the USA. He was left paralysed after the incident and succumbed to illness as a result of his weakened state. Lee was later recognised by the TT Government for his service to the Nation and is remembered as a strong-willed individual who refused to let his injuries get the better of him. In 2007, the Stadium became the first in the Caribbean to have an artificial playing surface, costing TT$8 million, which was made possible through a FIFA development grant. The first game was a TT Pro League encounter, where Caledonia AIA scored a narrow win over Joe Public F.C.. It was also host on June 15, 2008 to a World Cup qualifier between Trinidad and Bermuda which Bermuda won in a big upset 2 to 1. Trinidad would bounce back to win the return match in Bermuda 2 to 0 to advance to the 3rd round.

Eric Williams Plaza

Eric Williams Plaza, also known as the Eric Williams Financial Complex, located on Independence Square, Port of Spain, is the tallest building in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as in the English-speaking Caribbean. It consists of a pair of skyscrapers 22 stories high and 302 ft tall, locally known as the "Twin Towers". Construction on the complex started in 1979 and ended in 1986. The complex was officially opened on March 29, 1986. The architect who managed the construction was Anthony C. Lewis Partnership. The Eric Williams Plaza was named after Eric Williams, the first prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago. The first tower houses the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago while the second tower houses the Ministry of Finance. The first tower's official name is Eric Williams Financial Tower and the second tower's official name is the Central Bank Tower. The building surrounding the towers is the old Central Bank. The old Central Bank building has gold and currency vaults, administrative areas, an auditorium and a concert hall. It is one of the finest facilities in the country. It is also part of the complex. Both towers contain building security, communications, and life-safety systems. The towers have an earthquake resistant design. The cross braces and core walls in both towers are designed to take earthquake forces with the former taking 15% of the forces and the latter taking 85%. Additionally, great care was taken in the detailing of the reinforcement. The thickness of the basement under each tower is 25'. The pile cap under each tower is a cellular raft which is a combination of 9' × 6' beams and an 18" slab. Water storage for the complex is located in the basements of the towers. The building is located on the Brian Lara Promenade, Independence Square in downtown Port of Spain. It was the tallest building in Trinidad and Tobago until the Nicholas Tower was constructed by businessman Issa Nicholas. From 1993 to January of 1999, the office of the Prime Minister was housed here; in 1999 it was returned to the Whitehall.

Port of Spain

Port of Spain, also written as Port-of-Spain, is the capital city of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the country's third-largest municipality, after Chaguanas and San Fernando. The city has a municipal population of 37,074 , a metropolitan population of 128,026 (1990 unofficial estimate) and a transient daily population of 250,000. It is located on the Gulf of Paria, on the northwest coast of the island of Trinidad and is part of a larger conurbation stretching from Chaguaramas in the west to Arima in the east with an estimated population of 600,000. The city serves primarily as a retail and administrative centre and it has been the capital of the island since 1757. It is also an important financial services centre for the Caribbean and is home to two of the largest banks in the region. Port of Spain is the second largest capital city in the English-speaking Caribbean and is one of the largest cities in the Caribbean. It is also the largest capital city in the Lesser Antilles and southern Caribbean and is the most southern capital city in the Caribbean. Port of Spain was also the capital of the short-lived West Indies Federation, which united the Caribbean. Caricom was established in Chaguaramas, west of Port of Spain. The city is also home to the largest container port on the island and is one of several shipping hubs of the Caribbean, exporting both agricultural products and manufactured goods. Bauxite from Guyana is trans-shipped via facilities at Chaguaramas, about 8 kilometres (5 mi) west of the city. The pre-lenten Carnival is the city's main annual cultural festival and tourist attraction. Today, Port of Spain is a leading city in the Caribbean region. Trinidad hosted the Fifth Summit of the Americas in 2009 whose guests included US President Barack Obama and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Port of Spain also hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2009 and hosted a Commonwealth Business Forum in 2011. Port of Spain is also home to the biggest and most successful stock exchange in the Caribbean, the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange (TTSE). The iconic Nicholas Tower, as well as other skyscrapers, are well known throughout the region. These buildings dominate the city's skyline. Some of the tallest skyscrapers in the Caribbean are located in Port of Spain.

Piparo

Piparo is a village in Central Trinidad on the southern edge of the Central Range. The village has three main claims to fame: Piparo was the base of operations of Dole Chadee (born Nankissoon Boodram), a notorious drug lord who was executed in 1999 for the murder of four members of the Baboolal family. Piparo was the home of Ras Shorty I (born Garfield Blackman) during his self-imposed break from the soca world. Living simply in this rural community Ras Shorty-I developed Jamoo, a fusion of soca and gospel music. Piparo was the site of a large mud volcano eruption on February 22, 1997. The eruption covered an area of 2.5 km² and displaced 31 families. The mud volcano now lies inactive where the eruption took place. During the early twentieth century Piparo was an important cocoa bean producer. The small village is mainly inhabited by people of East Indian descent. There are Hindu temples and mosques and there is one main church. Since the eruption in 1997, an alternate road to the village has been established through the village of Guaracara.

Port of Spain General Hospital

Port of Spain General Hospital is a public hospital in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The main building was once a Colonial hospital that began construction in 1854, using local stone and imported brick facing to provide a Classical style facade. The official opening of the hospital was in 1858. The exterior has been maintained while the interior has been adapted for modern medical practice, mostly in work around 1960 directed by the UK architects Devereux and Davies and including murals by the Trinidadian artist Althea McNish. The hospital is located on Upper Charlotte Street in the city and serves as the main hospital for the North West Region of Trinidad, the most densely populated region in the island. Among its services are obstetric and gynecological care, outpatient medical care, surgical specialties such as orthopaedics and plastic surgery, therapeutic support and emergency care. It also serves as a teaching hospital to medical students from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus.
