National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina

The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in central Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was established in 1888, having originally been conceived around 1850. In 1913, the museum was enlarged by the Czech architect Karel Pařík who designed a structure of four symmetric pavilions with a facade in Italian Renaissance architecture. The four pavilions contain the departments of archaeology, ethnology, natural history, and a library. After being closed for several years due to heavy damage in the recent war, the museum has re-opened and is in the process of mounting new and pre-existing exhibits. The museum is a cultural and scientific institution covering a wide range of areas including archaeology, art history, ethnology, geography, history and natural history. The Sarajevo Haggadah, an illuminated manuscript and the oldest Sephardic Jewish document in the world issued in Barcelona around 1350, containing the traditional Jewish Haggadah, is held at the museum. It has a library with 162,000 volumes. On 4 October 2012, after 124 years of operation the institution closed its doors due to ongoing disputes about its funding. It did not get any funding in 2011, and in January 2012, the local government allocated funding which would be sufficient to pay existing utility bills but not to prevent the closure in the future.

Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Sarajevo

The Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos is the largest Serbian Orthodox church in Sarajevo and one of the largest in the Balkans. The cathedral is dedicated to the nativity of the Theotokos. It was erected at the request of the Orthodox parish of Sarajevo between 1863 and 1868. The church is constructed as a three-section basilica inscribed in a cross-shaped plan, and has five domes. The domes are built on the beams; the central one is much larger than the other four side domes. The church is arched by round elements. The small gilded baroque-style belfry is built in front of the entrance. The interior walls are decorated by painted ornaments. In the lower zones of the walls the painted ornaments are simulating the marble stone construction look. Arches and vaults are decorated in ornaments only. In 1898, the Orthodox Metropolitan Palace was built near the cathedral. The head master for construction was Andreja Damjanov, a man from the Damjanovi-Renzovski family of master builders, masons, painters, carpenters and stonecutters from the village of Papradište near Veles.

Baščaršija

Baščaršija is Sarajevos old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city. Baščaršija was built in the 15th century when Isa-Beg Isaković founded the town. The word Baščaršija derives from the Turkish language. The word "baš" which is "baş" in Turkish literally means "head", in some contexts however also "primary", "main", "capital" and "čaršija" which is "çarşı" in Turkish means "bazaar" or "market". Due to the large fire in the 19th century, today Baščaršija is half the size that it once was. Baščaršija is located on the north bank of the river Miljacka, in the municipality of Stari Grad. On Baščaršija there are several important historic buildings, such as the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and sahat-kula. Today Baščaršija is the major tourist attraction of Sarajevo.

Ferhadija Mosque in Sarajevo

Ferhadija Mosque, also known as Ferhat-Pasha Mosque, Ferhad-Beg Vuković Mosque, is a central building in the city of Sarajevo built by Bosnian Sanjak-bey Ferhad-Beg Vuković, a descendant of the famous mediaeval Vuković-Desisalić family. This mosque has one dome above the prayer area and three small domes at the cloister and is one of the greatest achievements of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 16th century Ottoman and Islamic architecture. The Ferhadija mosque reflects the full maturity of the classical Ottoman style-domed mosque, portico with small domes, and beautiful built-on minaret. Research works on the painted decoration inside the mosque carried out in the 1964/1965 revealed five painted layers dating from various periods. The oldest and extremely valuable decorations of the first layer date from 16th century, belonging to the group known as Rumi ornament,m which were also to be seen in the Aladža mosque in Foča. The next layers consists of purely floral decorations with the features of 18th century style. The third and fourth layers date from the late 19th century, and the first quarter of the 20th. The mosque was damaged during the Bosnian War in 1992-1995.

Saint Joseph's Church

The Saint Josephs Church is a Roman Catholic church in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was proclaimed a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2008. The initial design of St. Josephs church by Karel Pařík was based on the design for a neo-Romanesque church given to Archbishop Ivan Šarić by Pope Pius XI. Work began on the construction of church in 1936, and the building was consecrated on 31 March 1940. In plan the church is a triple-aisled basilica with transept. Below the sanctuary is a crypt containing the tomb of Archbishop Ivan Šarić. There are a further fifteen tombs in the south, west and east walls of the church. The church was painted by Josip Podolski in 1939, and the original stained glass windows were designed by Ivan Marinkocić. The stained glass at the west end and in the apse was destroyed by an explosion in 1945, but later restored. The high altar of St. Joseph and the terracotta Stations of the Cross were a gift from Pope Pius XII. The sculptor Franjo Rebhan carved the side altars and the tombs in the crypts. The church was damaged during the 1992-1995 war, after which it underwent structural repairs, with conservation and restoration work being carried out on the murals and stained glass.

Morića Han

Morića Han is a han originally built in 1551 in Sarajevo, Ottoman Empire (now Bosnia and Herzegovina). After a fire in 1697 it was reconstructed in its current form. Morića Han is one of the buildings which were financed by and belonged to Gazi Husrev-Beg's endowment (Vakuf). It is the only surviving han in Sarajevo. It is located in Baščaršija, Sarači street, in Stari Grad. Morića Han is considered a true caravanserai because, when operational, it could accommodate about 300 passengers and 70 horses. Evliya Çelebi, an Ottoman traveler, wrote about his visit to Sarajevo in 1659 and described Morića Han as Hadži-Bešir's han, because Hadži-Bešir was landlord of the han then. The modern name probably comes from the surname of the han's tenants at the beginning of the 19th century, Mustafa-aga Morić and his son Ibrahim-aga Morić. However, some sources connect the name of this han with the Morić brothers who participated in rebellions against the Ottoman Empire from 1747 to 1757. The citizens of Sarajevo gathered in Morića Han on 29 July 1878, established Narodni Odbor and protested against the occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina by Austria-Hungary. The han has survived several fires, most recently in December 1957 when the entire building was destroyed. It was reconstructed from 1971 to 1974 and decorated with Persian calligraphy inscriptions from poems written by Omar Khayyám. Stari Grad returned ownership of Morića Han to Gazi Husrev-Beg's endowment in 1998. Management of the endowment rents the han for business purposes that match the historical context, including a national restaurant, a Persian carpet shop, and religious societies. Morića Han is mentioned in the sevdalinka song "Vila kliče sa vrh Trebevića" used in the movie When Father Was Away on Business, directed by Emir Kusturica.

Hotel Europe

Hotel Europe (originally known as Hotel Evropa) is a historic hotel in central Sarajevo. Built and opened in the early days of what turned out to be a 40-year Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the hotel holds a special place in the city's lore as its first modern hospitality venue. Over its almost century and a half long existence, the hotel saw many changes often brought upon by sudden geopolitical events, reflecting the city's turbulent political and social history. For 60 years, from its construction and grand opening until World War II, Hotel Evropa had been owned and run by the Jeftanović family, father and son Gliša and Dušan, respectively, Serb merchants and industrialists from Sarajevo. During the communist period in Yugoslavia from 1945 until 1990, the hotel was nationalized and run by various state-owned entities such as HTP Evropa. Since the Bosnian War, the property has been re-privatized in 2006 by the Sandžak-born Bosniak businessman Rasim Bajrović who re-opened the venue in 2008, this time under a modified name Hotel Europe.

BBI Centar

BBI Centar is a modern shopping mall in the center of Sarajevo. It is one of the largest shopping malls in Bosnia and Herzegovina, stretching to 43 000 square metre and it was opened on 6 of April, 2009. The BBI Centar was built on the site of one of the most popular shopping centers during Yugoslav times. The construction started in early 2006 and finished in early 2009. The top floors are also home to the headquarters of Al Jazeera Balkans. BBI Center is a shopping gallery in Sarajevo, built in the city center with an investment worth more than 35 million EUR. It is designed as a 43.000 square meters big multifunctional building and offers sophisticated space for retail, gastronomy, office space, warehouse, and underground garages. 469 parking spaces with video surveillance are located on three underground floors. Square in front of BBI Center is an ideal opportunity to rest in the open, because it is fully equipped withbenches, flower pots, lighting, fountains).
