Top Attractions in Nabeul Governorate

Kerkouane

Kerkouane is a Punic city in northeastern Tunisia, near Cape Bon. This Phoenician city was probably abandoned during the First Punic War and as a result was not rebuilt by the Romans. It had existed for almost 400 years. Excavations of the town have revealed ruins from the 4th and 3rd Centuries BC. Around the site where the layout is clearly visible, many houses still show their walls, and the coloured clay on the facades is often still visible. The houses were built to a standard plan, in accordance with a sophisticated notion of town planning. A sanctuary has some columns preserved, and in a small atrium parts of mosaics are found. Curbstones, doorsteps, thresholds, and floors of simple mosaic layers are found all over the ruins. Still archaeologists work on the Kerkouane site, but it is believed that the best parts have already been discovered. Kerkouane was one of the most important Punic cities, with Carthage, Hadrumetum and Utica.

Necropolis of Kerkouane

A necropolis is located approximately 1.5 km northwest of the Punic city of Kerkouane, Tunisia. The necropolis consists of a series of vaults set in a seaside hill, four primary chamber-tombs, and a surrounding burial area. In 1985, UNESCO declared Kerkouane and its necropolis a World Heritage Site, because "[t]he remains constitute the only example of a Phoenicio-Punic city to have survived." The necropolis was discovered in 1929 by a local Islamic schoolteacher. This schoolteacher found a large store of buried possessions in the tombs, the most valuable of which he proceeded to sell to treasure hunters and collectors. The sold loot variously included jewellery, ceramics, and scarab gems. Many of the funerary objects and large pottery were too burdensome to be removed, and so were left in the tombs or destroyed. The discovery of the necropolis was not formally documented until some time later, after the schoolteacher revealed his source of wealth to an enquiring law officer. Further excavations have since been undertaken by historians and archaeologists. Many of the objects recovered have been sundries with little value, left over from the schoolteacher's pillage and the ransacks of grave robbers after him: bones, eggs, altars, amulets, bronze coins, razors, toiletries, obsidian and basalt relics, and earrings, among others. Exceptions include an ancient Greek signet ring; a jasper scarab depicting an animalistic Egyptian god; and a set of rare perfume flasks, which was claimed by the Fragonard museum in Grasse, France. The most precious find to date is a red-painted sarcophagus with a cover in the shape of a woman identified as the goddess Astarte, protector of the dead, or one of her worshippers. The woman is dressed in a robe and wears a sacred crown known as a polos. She is covered in red, blue, and yellow plaster, and is – with the exception of her feet – perfectly intact. The sarcophagus is prized as one of the only known Punic wood carvings still existing; for this reason, it was taken to Zurich, Switzerland for treatment shortly after its discovery. When news of the find broke, the carved woman was dubbed "the princess of Kerkouane" by the Tunisian press. The sarcophagus now rests in the Kerkouane site museum.

Zembra

Zembra is a Tunisian island. The island is a 432 metres tall rock formation, and as such contains many 400 metre-high cliffs. It has an area of 369 hectares . Located 15 kilometres from Sidi Daoud and 50 kilometres from the port of La Goulette, it is a natural extension of the peninsula of Cap Bon. Zembra is a natural fortress that housed a resort until 1976 and then passed into the hands of the Tunisian army. On the southern coast there are remains of an ancient harbour. The island has a Mediterranean climate. Zembra has a fragile ecosystem and has been classified as a protected area by UNESCO since 1977. The islands vegetation consists of about 266 plant species which are distributed according to topography of land. The native soils include rock, clay, sand and magnesium lime. The flora is characterised by a canopy of dense bush, including olive and Phoenician juniper and gorse, and the presence of rare plants which favour of saline soils.. There are also invertebrates and terrestrial mammals introduced by man, such as rabbit, Corsican sheep, black rat and feral cat. In addition, Zembra is located on an avian migration route between Tunisia and the Strait of Sicily, and hosts more than 25,000 pairs of migrating birds which nest in the rocky cliffs. The island is home to the largest colony of shearwaters in the Mediterranean. Dolphins are also common in the waters surrounding the island.

Pupput

Pupput is an archaeological site near Hammamet, in northern Tunisia. A settlement existed here since as early as the 1st century BC (perhaps of Berber-Punic origin), and was a simple village at the time of the rule of Roman emperor Antoninus Pius (2nd century AD), it became a colony under Commodus (185-192). According to an inscription in the Bardo National Museum, dedicated to emperor Licinius (4th century), the Roman name of the town was Colonia Aurelia Commode Pia Felix Augusta Pupput. Historical sources mention the existence of a Capitol, a theatre and amphitheatre, of which no traces exist today. Remains include aqueducts parts, cisterns, some edifices with mosaics, and baths which gave the name to the nearby Hammamet (from Arabic hammam, meaning "bath"). At 300 meters is a large Roman necropolis, the largest in Africa. The ancient town and bishopric of Puppi has been tentatively identified with this site at Souk el-Abiod.

Hammamet

Hammamet is a town in Tunisia. Thanks to its beaches it is a popular destination for swimming and water sports. It is the first tourist destination in Tunisia. It is located in the south east of the northern peninsula of Cap Bon in the Governorate of Nabeul, on the northern edge of the Gulf of Hammamet. The reported number of inhabitants varies from 100,000 to 400,000 and the population quadruples due to tourists' arrival in the summer. It is particularly known for jasmine, and this is how the tourist resort of Yasmine Hammamet got its name. All over Hammamet, souvenirs made of jasmine can be found. Around Hammamet, all kinds of immigrant towns/suburbs are being built as immigrants from the southern part of the country come to find work. As a popular destination for tourists, it brings a lot of money to Tunisia. In the 1st century, there was a settlement here known as Pupput. It was a town that became a Roman colony in the 2nd century. In the 13th century, walls around town were built and medina of Hammamet was built in the 15th century. Then it came under Spanish and Turkish rule. In 1601 it was the object of a successful Spanish attack. At that time the Spanish name for the place was "La Mahometa". Alonso de Contreras participated and tells the story in his autobiography. Three hundred men took seven hundred prisoners, mostly women and children because most of the men in the town had fled. On 14 August 1605 there was another Spanish attack in which Contreras also participated but this time the result was disastrous for the attackers. It was carried out by six galleys, four from Malta, six from Sicily carrying Spanish and other Christian troops. The initial taking of the town was successful as the Spanish managed to climb the walls and open the gates but then there was an unexpected call to retreat it could not be later determined where or how it originated. In the confusion the retreat fell into disorder and the Spanish were massacred at the beach by a much smaller number of Moors. There were 1200 men gathered at the beach trying to get back to their ships but the wind had changed and conditions were difficult. The leader of the expedition, Adelantado de Castilla, lost his life as he tried to swim out to the Spanish ships and as the captain in charge of his skiff fled and ignored his calls for help. That captain was later court-martialed and, when it became clear he would be sentenced to death, his own brother poisoned him. This story and more details can be found in Contreras' autobiography. In World War II, it became one of the headquarters of the Nazi general Erwin Rommel. Festival international d'Hammamet was established in 1964.
