Oaklands Historic House Museum

Oaklands Historic House Museum is in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA. Oaklands Mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a local landmark known for its unique Italianate design. The plantation was caught in the middle of the Civil War and officers from both the Confederate and Union armies stayed in the mansion. The most notable visitor to the home was Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who stayed at Oaklands in December 1862. The last residential owner of Oaklands, Rebecca Jetton, moved out of the house in the 1950s when she was no longer able to maintain it. The abandoned mansion was vandalized and left in disrepair. The city of Murfreesboro acquired it in 1958 with the intention of tearing it down. However, the mansion was restored to its original grandeur by a group of women who rallied together to form the Oaklands Association. The home was opened to the public as a museum in the early 1960s and now receives thousands of visitors annually.

Boxwood

Boxwood, also known as the Thomas J.B. Turner House, is an antebellum plantation house in Rutherford County, Tennessee, west of Murfreesboro in the historic Salem community. The house was built by Thomas J. B. Turner and his wife, Sarah Jetton Turner, and completed in 1843. It is a two-story brick house built on an I-house plan. Greek Revival architectural influences characteristic of antebellum architecture are evident in its design, which features a divided pedimented portico with square Doric columns and a balustrade. The name of the house derives from the boxwood plantings on the grounds, which are said to have originated with plants that Turner brought to Tennessee in a powder horn. The Union Army occupied Boxwood during the Civil War. Boxwood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Middle Tennessee State University

Middle Tennessee State University, commonly abbreviated as MTSU or MT, is a comprehensive coeducational public university in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Founded in 1911 as a normal school, the university is composed of eight undergraduate colleges as well as a college of graduate studies, together offering more than 80 majors/degree programs through over 35 departments. MTSU is most prominently known for its Recording Industry, Aerospace, Music, and Concrete Industry Management programs. The university has partnered in research endeavors with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the United States Army, and the United States Marine Corps. In 2009, Middle Tennessee State University was ranked among the nation's top 100 public universities by Forbes magazine. MTSU student athletes compete intercollegiately as the Blue Raiders, as a part of Division I Football Bowl Subdivision athletics in the Conference USA. On November 29, 2012, MTSU Athletics announced they had accepted an invitation to the conference. MTSU is part of the Tennessee Board of Regents and the State University and Community College System of Tennessee, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Its president is Sidney A. McPhee.

Murphy Center

Charles M. Murphy Athletic Center is the name of the main athletic department building at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, United States. The building opened December 11, 1972, and is named in honor of former athletics director Charles M. "Bubber" Murphy, a standout athlete at the college in the 1930s, who also served as head coach of Middle Tennessee States football, basketball, and baseball programs. Located on the northwest edge of MTSUs campus, adjacent to Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium, Murphy Center houses most of the universitys athletics offices, some classroom space, multiple practice gymnasiums, training rooms, locker rooms, weight rooms, dance studios, racquetball courts and, most notably, the 11,520-seat multi-purpose Monte Hale Arena. The buildings campus abbreviation is MC. Though the building appears to sit atop a hill, it is actually two levels high, with most of the first floor situated behind a berm. The first level contains Murphy Centers offices and facilities, which are positioned in a square under the arenas seating bowl. The arena floor itself is also on the first level, and is accessible from any of four portals. The main arena concourse makes up the second level, which is entirely above ground, and its exterior walls are composed completely of windows and metal frames. As a result, Murphy Center has earned the nickname "The Glass House". During the day, the interior of the arena is bathed with natural sunlight, so much so that a curtain was installed on the western side of the building to prevent glare during afternoon events. The bleacher sections on the concourse also help to shield the arena floor from the light.

Discovery Center at Murfree Spring

The Discovery Center is a nature center and wetlands boardwalk near downtown Murfreesboro, Tennessee. It began as the "Discovery House", a childrens museum, in 1986. During its first year of operation it had 11,000 visitors. In 1995 after it outgrew its old location the Discovery House staff, Congressman Bart Gordon and Murfreesboro Mayor Joe Jackson, with the help of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, began to study the possibility of reusing the vacated site of the old Murfreesboro Water Sewer Plant. After several years it was decided that, for environmental reasons, the old structures should be demolished and new buildings built. In 1996 the City of Murfreesboro leased 61/2 acres of city land to the Discovery House. The Board of Directors, with the help of local citizens, was able to procure a large amount of privately donated wetlands. They then began a grassroots funding campaign to raise the money needed for the Discovery Center". By 1999 $1.8 million had been raised and the construction of the 18,000 sq ft center began in 2001. Its grand opening was held August 3, 2002. As well as its museum the Discovery Center includes 20 acres of wetland. The Discovery Center and the Citys Greenway trail system and parks have reversed decades of local environmental damage and preserved large areas of vanishing wetlands and natural areas which include rare native plants. The Discovery Center marsh contains the states largest population of sessile water-speedwell. Today the Center receives over 130,000 visitors annually.
