Church of Saint-Just

The church of Saint-Just or Saint-Just of the Maccabees church, is a church in Lyon France. The church sacristy hosted the "French-speaking Orthodox parish of the Holy Encounter" parish Orthodox of the Byzantine rite dependent on the patriarchate of Constantinople until July 2014. It is located at 41 rue des Farges, in Lyon, and is the reconstruction of one of the oldest churches in Lyon, and dedicated to saint Just , the 13th bishop of Lyon in the 4th century. The original bascilica was built on top of the ancient Roman necropolis where Just had been buried. The area around the old church was named Saint-Just and is today a quarter in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon. The old Basilica was destroyed in the wars of the reformation. The current church Saint-Just is the reconstruction of the ancient Basilica of Saint-Just. It was built inside the walls of the city after the destruction of the basilica during religious wars of the reformation. The two sites are separated by 200 meters. The reasons for this movement seem to be a need to have the church inside the city walls, during a time religious turmoil. She is one of the few examples of churches rebuilt at such a distance from their original site. Construction began in 1565 and continued till 1663. The construction was rapid at first as the canons of the basilica wanted to celebrate a Mass by Christmas 1565, however construction then slowed down for lack of money. The sanctuary was consecrated in 1591 by Archbishop of Épinac . The facade dates 18th century and is Neoclassical in style. It was designed by Ferdinand-Sigismond Delamonce with an inscription that recalls the dedication of the ancient basilica to the Maccabees : Machabaeis primo deinde sancto iusto (For the Maccabees first then St Just).

Fourvière

Fourvière is a district of Lyon, France and also a hill immediately west of the old part of the town, rising abruptly from the river Saône and then gently sloping down to the north-west. It is the site of the original Roman settlement of Lugdunum . Though it supports the world's two oldest and active funicular lines, it is primarily known for the Catholic Basilica of Fourvière. The inauguration of the golden statue of the Virgin Mary on the north-west tower is the origin of the famous 8 December Festival of Lights, when the citizens of Lyon display candles at their windows. This festival now attracts hundreds of thousands of people into the streets of Lyon every year. Fourvière contains many other religious buildings including convents, monasteries and chapels. It is known in Lyon as "the hill that prays". It is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage site designated for the city of Lyon in 1998. Also on the Fourvière hill is La Tour Métallique which was privately built by the owners of the land to rival the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It forms the highest point in Lyon and is in fact higher than the Eiffel Tower at its summit, due to it being on a hill. It is now a television relay tower. On the south side of Fourvière are the vast ruins of Roman Baths, partially intact ruins of a Roman Theatre and a 2nd Century Roman Odéon rediscovered in the 20th century and now home to a museum as well as a series of concerts and operas throughout the summer. A double motorway tunnel passes under Fourvière, connecting the A6 autoroute and the A7 autoroute both forming the "Autoroute du Soleil". Prior to the construction of the bypass of Lyon by the east, and with Lyon being virtually the only low passage between the Alps and the Massif Central volcano range, the tunnel was famous for its traffic jams caused by a combination of local traffic, that of neighboring countries, as well as traffic between northern and southern France. The hill is very fragile in places due to springs, underground streams, ancient tunnels and aqueducts, which have caused several subsidences in the past.

Where is this?

GuRoute likes to place attractions inside other attractions. So, maybe it's in a city, or maybe it's inside a particular park in that city. Maybe your attraction is a huge park that spans half the county, or multiple counties.

Determining where this attraction is gives it context - if it's in a park, you'll be able to see it alongside all the other attractions in that park. And that helps define the park.

GuRoute will automatically calculate a parent region for this attraction. You can change it if there is something more appropriate.
