Josef Sudek Gallery

The Josef Sudek Gallery is near Hradčany in Prague, in a house where Josef Sudek lived from 1959 until his death. Part of his photographic output was transferred to the MDA in Prague in the years 1978–1988. Since 1989 the MDA in Prague has also administered his flat, where the gallery opened in 1995. Sudek had also a studio in Prague, Na Újezdu 28, which he continued to use for his photographic work after moving to Hradčany, and where his sister and assistant Božena Sudková lived. Sudeks flat was a popular place for friendly gatherings of many artists, among them the poet Jaroslav Seifert, painter Jan Zrzavý, architect Otto Rothmayer and many others. In the flat, which was gradually filled with numerous paintings, frames, goblets, boxes and photographic tools, originated many now renowned compositions in the series Aviatic Remembrances, Easter Remembrances, Labyrinths and Glass Labyrinths. This flat was also a departure point from which Sudek used to set off to roam the Prague gardens, parks and his beloved outskirts.

Petřín Lookout Tower

The Petřín Lookout Tower is a 63.5-metre-tall steel-framework tower in Prague, which strongly resembles the Eiffel Tower. Although it is much shorter than the Eiffel Tower, it stands atop a sizable hill, Petřín, so the top is at a higher elevation than that of the Eiffel Tower. The Petřínská rozhledna was built in 1891 and was used as an observation tower as well as a transmission tower. Today the Petřínská rozhledna is a major tourist attraction. The hill is roughly a half-hour walk up paths that get quite slippery when it snows, and the tower is a shorter but fairly tiring climb; however, the hill is served by a frequent funicular and the tower has an elevator for disabled persons. In 2014 the tower was visited by more than 557 thousand visitors, with foreigners being over 70% thereof. The two observation platforms are accessible via 299 stairs in sections of 13 per flight running around the inside of the structure. There are a gift shop and a small cafeteria on the main level. On the lowest level is a small exhibition area. One exhibition displayed Merkur Observation Towers and was held from 6 March 2013 to 30 March 2014.

Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge is a famous historic bridge that crosses the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV, and finished in the beginning of the 15th century. The bridge replaced the old Judith Bridge built 1158–1172 that had been badly damaged by a flood in 1342. This new bridge was originally called the Stone Bridge or the Prague Bridge but has been the "Charles Bridge" since 1870. As the only means of crossing the river Vltava until 1841, the Charles Bridge was the most important connection between Prague Castle and the citys Old Town and adjacent areas. This "solid-land" connection made Prague important as a trade route between Eastern and Western Europe. The bridge is 621 m long and nearly 10 m wide, resting on 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two of them on the Lesser Quarter side and the third one on the Old Town side. The Old Town bridge tower is often considered to be one of the most astonishing civil gothic-style buildings in the world. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, originally erected around 1700 but now all replaced by replicas.

Lennon Wall

The Lennon Wall or John Lennon Wall, is a wall in Prague, Czech Republic. Once a normal wall, since the 1980s it has been filled with John Lennon-inspired graffiti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles' songs. In 1988, the wall was a source of irritation for the communist regime of Gustáv Husák. Young Czechs would write grievances on the wall and in a report of the time this led to a clash between hundreds of students and security police on the nearby Charles Bridge. The movement these students followed was described ironically as "Lennonism" and Czech authorities described these people variously as alcoholics, mentally deranged, sociopathic, and agents of Western capitalism. The wall continuously undergoes change and the original portrait of Lennon is long lost under layers of new paint. Even when the wall was repainted by some authorities, on the second day it was again full of poems and flowers. Today, the wall represents a symbol of global ideals such as love and peace. The wall is owned by the Knights of Malta, who allowed the graffiti to continue on the wall, and is located at Velkopřevorské náměstí , Malá Strana. A similar wall inspired by the original wall has appeared on the walls of the Hong Kong Central Government Offices, with citizens posting colourful post-it notes with their democratic wishes for Hong Kong during 2014 Hong Kong protests. On 17 November 2014, the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, the wall was painted over in pure white by a group of art students, leaving only the text "wall is over" [sic]. The Knights of Malta initially filed a criminal complaint for vandalism against the students, which they later retracted after gaining contact with them. The wall mural is still there as of Dec 6, 2014. And the "Wall is Over" bit has been changed to "War is Over".

Loreta

Loreta is a large pilgrimage destination in Hradčany, a district of Prague, Czech Republic. It consists of a cloister, the church of the Lord’s Birth, a Holy Hut and the clock tower with a famous chime. The construction had started in 1626 and the Holy Hut was blessed on March 25, 1631. The architect was the Italian Giovanni Orsi; the project was financed by a noblewoman Kateřina Benigna of the Lobkowicz family. Fifty years later the place of pilgrimage was already surrounded by cloisters to which after 1740 an upper storey by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. The Face wall in Baroque style was designed by the architects Christoph Dientzenhofer and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer and added at the beginning of the 18th century. The chapel is most known for its peal, heard since August 15, 1695. It was constructed during 1694 by watchmaker Peter Neumann from thirty smaller and larger bells. Today the building also hosts large collection of liturgical tools, mainly monstrances. Exhibitions are occasionally held on the first floor of the cloister. Neighbouring Loreta Square is named after Loreta.

Petřín funicular

The Petřín funicular is a funicular railway in the Czech capital city of Prague. It links the Malá Strana district with the top of Petřín hill. The funicular has three stops: Újezd (at the bottom of the hill), Nebozízek and Petřín (at the top of the hill). According to Czech legend, the name of the middle station stems from an incident in which little son of Emperor Charles IV, requesting food, was unable to properly pronounce the Czech letter "ř" when he requested for a schnitzel, so instead of "nebo řízek" (meaning, "or schnitzel"), he expressed the word Nebozízek which actually means diminutively one of types of auger. The line was originally opened in 1891, with a length of 383 metres (1,257 ft), a track gauge of 1,000 mm metre gauge, and water balance propulsion. This original line closed with start of the First World War in 1914 and did not reopen after the end of hostilities. The current longer line opened in 1932 with a different track gauge and completely new equipment, and operated throughout the Second World War. However a landslide in 1965 caused the service to be suspended, and it was not resumed until 1985. At that time new cars were provided and the track reconstructed, but the original machinery retained. Although design and architecture of the stations are similar to Prague Metro, the funicular is actually operated by the trams division of the city transport company. St. Clement's Cathedral

The St. Clement's Cathedral or the Church of St. Clement, is the name given to a Catholic church of the Byzantine Rite located in Prague, Czech Republic, and functions as the cathedral of the Apostolic Exarchate of the Czech Republic (Exarchatus Apostolicus Reipublicae Cechae). The church was erected as a cathedral with the Bull "Quo aptius" by Pope John Paul II of March 13, 1996, which established the Exarchate. The church has a single nave Baroque style, was built by the Jesuits in the Clementinum area between 1711 and 1715, designed by František Kaňka and built by Antonio Lurago on the site of an older Gothic church, where the Dominicans in 1227 founded their monastery, which was destroyed by Hussite Protestants in 1420. the Italian Chapel, or the Chapel of the Virgin, was built above the church of St. Clement, between 1590 and 1600, for the inhabitants Catholic Italians. Inside the church a rich decoration is observed, with statues of the Fathers of the Church and the Evangelists placed in niches in the walls, the work of Matthias Braun. The main altar is decorated with a painting by Josef Kramolín. The original iconostasis was subsequently replaced by a new one in 1984.

Petschek Palace

The Petschek Palace is a neoclassicist building in Prague. It was built between 1923 and 1929 by the architect Max Spielmann upon a request from the merchant banker Julius Petschek and was originally called "The Bank House Petschek and Co." Despite its historicizing look, the building was then a very modern one, being constructed of reinforced concrete and fully air-conditioned. It also had tube post, phone switch-board, printing office, a paternoster lift, and massive safes in the sublevel floor. The building was sold by the Petschek family before the occupation of Czechoslovakia, and the family left the country. It was during the war years that the place gained its notoriety, as it immediately became the headquarters of Gestapo for the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. It was here where the interrogations and torturing of the Czech resistance members took place, as well as the courts-martial established by Reinhard Heydrich which sent most of the prisoners to death or to Nazi concentration camps. Many people were put to death in the building itself. A Blue plaque that commemorates the spirit of these war heroes was unveiled on the corner of the building. In 1948 the building was acquired by the then-Czechoslovak Ministry of Foreign Trade. Today it is the residence of a part of the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade. In 1989 the building became a National Cultural Monument .

Clam-Gallas Palace

The Clam-Gallas Palace is a Baroque palace in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. The building is situated on the corner of Husova Street and Mariánské Square, in Prague Old Town. The palace was first designed by the imperial court architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, from Vienna. It was built in 1714–18 by the Italian architect Domenico Canevale. During the rest of the 18th century, Jewish balls and concerts were held in the palace, and were attended by noteworthy artists including Mozart and Beethoven. The Clam–Gallas Palace was built for the Viceroy of Naples, Count John Wenceslaus of Gallas. The Gallas family died out in 1757, and at that point the palace was inherited by Kristian Filip of Clam, son of Gallas' sister, which is how the Clam-Gallas family was created. The palace is now owned by the City of Prague which lends it to the Prague City Archives. Besides, since 2010 a multi-genre festival named "Opera Barocca" is regularly held in the palace premises. This festival is focused on historically informed performance of Baroque music, dance, theatre and carnival.

Schönborn Palace

The Schoenborn Palace in the Mala Strana district of Prague is the current home of the United States Embassy to the Czech Republic. The first United States Minister to Czechoslovakia was Richard Crane, a Chicago plumbing millionaire. In 1925, Crane, who acquired the Schoenborn Palace at the end of the First World War, sold the building to the United States Government for $117,000. Rudolf von Colloredo built the present palace between 1643 and 1656 on the site of an earlier building that had been destroyed during the Thirty Years War. Having lost a leg at the Battle of Lutzen, the count had the flight of steps leading to the first garden terrace built with a special incline to enable him to ride into his palace on horseback. The palace was ultimately inherited by the Schönborn family, from whom it took its present name. Writer Franz Kafka lived and worked in the building in 1917. Carl Johann Schönborn sold the property to Richard Crane who ultimately transferred it to the United States Government. George Kennan, in his memoir wrote that when he arrived in Prague in 1938 there were beautiful terraced gardens behind the palace. The garden had an orchard which contained a structure called the Glorietta. From there was a view of the Charles Bridge in one direction and the Hradcany in another.

Kepler Museum

Kepler Museum in Prague was founded in the International Year of Astronomy, 2009 thanks to the generosity of the owner of the museums premises Mrs. Jitka Steinwaldová, the professional and organizational support of the Czech Astronomic Society and the Agentura ProVás, and the financial support of the Magistrate of the Capital City of Prague and the Agentura ProVás. The three circles in the logo of the Kepler Museum represent the planet Mars, the Earth, and the Sun. These are the bodies whose mutual positions were studied by Kepler in Prague. The entrance tickets to the Museum will surprise visitors as they will feature the astronomic dial of the Prague Astronomical Clock with the exact moment of entry to the Museum. The same datum will also be expressed in the Old Bohemian and in the Babylonian manner. The sidereal time will be included, as well. The author of the original entrance ticket is CEO of the Agentura ProVás, Mr. Vojtěch Sedláček.

Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague

Founded in 1885, the Prague Museum of Decorative Arts is housed in a Neo-Renaissance edifice built from 1897 to 1899 after the designs of architect Josef Schulz. It opened in 1900 with exhibitions on the first floor. The Museum’s rich collections include decorative and applied arts and design work ranging from Late Antiquity to the present day with focus on European objects, particularly arts and crafts created in the Bohemian lands. The impressive interior of the permanent exhibition, “Stories of Materials,” offers visitors an excursion into the history and development of decorative arts in the disciplines of glass, ceramics, graphic art, design, metal, wood and other materials, as well as objects such as jewellery, clocks and watches, textiles, fashion, toys and furniture.

Bedřich Smetana Museum

The Bedřich Smetana Museum in Prague is a museum which is dedicated to the life and works of famous Czech composer Bedřich Smetana . It is situated in the centre of Prague in a small block of buildings right next to Charles Bridge on the right bank of the river Vltava in the Old Town . The building, which was formerly owned by Prague Water Company, has housed the Smetana Museum since 1936. It is a grand building in the Renaissance style. The main part of the museum exhibits are on the first floor. The upper floors house archive material relating to Smetana, providing a centre for research. Exhibits include copies of letters, photographs and newspaper cuttings relating to Smetana’s life as well as various possessions including his earbone . There are also folders on music stands which contain material about some of Smetana’s most famous works. The visitor is able to listen to extracts from these works by zapping the required music stand with an electronic baton. Smetana was the leading Czech composer at a time when Czech Nationalism was allowed to be expressed through the medium of the arts, which had so long been dominated by the official language, German. The Czech people were searching for their national identity and for the first time had the opportunity to perform plays and operas in the Czech language. The embodiment of this movement was the National Theatre which opened in November 1883 with a performance of a specially written opera by Smetana, Libuše, which deals with the legendary story of the foundation of Prague. His six symphonic poems Má vlast describe various aspects of his homeland: its countryside and legends. The second of these tone-poems, Vltava, is especially popular. The main tune is broadcast over the public address system at Prague’s main railway station. The museum is open daily except on Tuesdays.

Golden Lane

Golden Lane is a street situated at the Prague Castle, Czech Republic. Its name is connected with 16th century alchemists, who had to look there, according to legends, for a reaction to produce gold. Even though the lane was temporarily called the Street of Alchemists or Alchemists Alley, alchemists have never worked or lived there. Golden Lane consist of tiny colored houses. Today it is a part of small and big castle ring, while from the closing hour of Prague Castle interiors it is open for free. Nowadays there are many souvenir shops in the houses and there is a medieval museum of armory within the former 14th-century fortification accessible from the Golden Lane. House no. 22 is connected with Franz Kafka, Czech-Jewish writer, who used this house for approximately two years coming here to write in peace. Jaroslav Seifert, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1984 and who was one of the signatories of Charter 77, lived there in 1929. Golden Lane is connected with Dalibor Tower, which used to be a dungeon.
