Hobcaw Barony

Hobcaw Barony is a 16,000 acres tract on a peninsula called Waccamaw Neck between the Winyah Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in Georgetown County, South Carolina. Much of Hobcaw Barony is south of US Highway 17. The land was purchased by the investor, philanthropist, presidential advisor, and South Carolina native Bernard M. Baruch between 1905 and 1907 for a winter hunting retreat. Later, his eldest child, Belle W. Baruch began purchasing the property from her father beginning in 1936. By 1956, Belle owned Hobcaw Barony entirely. Upon her death in 1964, the property was transferred to the Belle W. Baruch Foundation for a nature and research preserve. The property includes more than 37 historic buildings and structures representative of the eras of both 18th 19th century rice cultivation and 20th century winter retreats. Hobcaw Barony was named to the National Register of Historic Places on November 2, 1994. The Belle W. Baruch Foundation and the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve jointly operate the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center and provide tours and special programs.

Hopsewee

Hopsewee Plantation, also known as Thomas Lynch, Jr., Birthplace or Hopsewee-on-the-Santee, is a house built in 1735 near Georgetown, South Carolina. It was the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and served as a Lowcountry rice plantation. Before he departed for his ill fated voyage he made a will, which stipulated that heirs of his female relatives must change their surname to Lynch in order to inherit the family estate, a rice plantation. He was taken ill at the end of 1779 and he sailed, with his wife, for St. Eustatius in the West Indies. Their ship disappeared at sea in a storm and was never found. The family estate, Hopsewee, still stands in South Carolina. The Lynch family sold the house in 1752 to Robert Hume whose son, John Hume, lived at Hopsewee in the winter after inheriting it. Upon his death in 1841, his own son, John Hume Lucas, inherited the house. John Hume Lucas died in 1853. Like many Santee plantations, it was abandoned during the Civil War. After the war, rice was never planted again, but the Lucas family continued to occupy Hopsewee until 1925. In September 1949, Col. and Mrs. Wilkinson bought the house and occupied it. According to the National Park Service, "the frame building, a fine example of a Carolina "low country" plantation house, shows West Indian influence, with its double-tiered piazza and dormered hip roof." The house is made of black cypress and rests on a brick foundation which forms a cellar. The house is forty feet wide and fifty feet deep. Each floor has four rooms with a central hall. The piazzas were added in 1845 and replace an earlier verandah. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971. It is located about 13 miles south of Georgetown on U.S. Highway 17, in the vicinity of North Santee on the North Santee River. The house continues to be a private residence, but is open to the public for tours. It is furnished with 18th and 19th century period furniture.

Chicora Wood Plantation

The Chicora Wood Plantation is a former rice plantation in Georgetown County, South Carolina. The plantation itself was established sometime between 1732 and 1736 and the 1819 plantation house still exists today. In 1827, Robert Francis Withers Allston resigned as surveyor-general of South Carolina to take over full-time management of Chicora Wood, which he had inherited from his father. Chicora Wood served as a home base for his network of rice plantations, which produced 840,000 pounds of rice in 1850 and 1,500,000 pounds by 1860. 401 slaves worked the plantation in 1850, increasing to 630 by 1860. The house was built in Greek Revival style, on a raised basement typical of the region. A number of outbuildings still survive on the complex, including the rice mill complex. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 11, 1973. It is located in the Pee Dee River Rice Planters Historic District.

Georgetown Historic District

Georgetown Historic District is a national historic district located at Georgetown, Georgetown County, South Carolina. The district encompasses 49 contributing buildings in the central business district of Georgetown. The oldest existing structure in Georgetown is a dwelling which dates from about 1737. There are approximately 28 additional 18th century structures as well as 18 buildings erected during the 19th century prior to the American Civil War. The existing structures—homes, churches, public buildings—are of both historical and architectural significance and are situated on heavily shaded, wide streets. The architecture ranges from the simplicity of early colonial, or Georgian, to the elaborate rice plantation era, such as Classical Revival. Notable buildings include the Georgetown County Courthouse, U.S. Post Office, The Rice Museum, Winyah Indigo Society Hall, Masonic Lodge, Antipedo Baptist Church Cemetery, Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church complex, St. Marys Catholic Church, Kaminski Building, Mary Man House, Dr. Charles Fyffe / Middleton House, John Cleland / Allston House, Samuel Sampson / Henning-Ward House, Robert Stewart / George Pawley House, Martha Allston Pyatt /John S. Pyatt House, Eleazar Waterman / Withers House, and William Waties / Withers House. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

The North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, in the U.S. State of South Carolina, features the salt marshes and ocean dominated tidal creeks of the North Inlet Estuary plus the brackish waters and marshes of the adjacent Winyah Bay Estuary. North Inlet is a relatively pristine system in which water and habitat quality are much higher than those in Winyah Bay. As the estuary with the third largest watershed on the east coast, Winyah Bay has been greatly influenced by agriculture, industry and other human activities. More than 90 percent of North Inlet's watershed is in its natural forested state The reserve is home to many threatened and endangered species, including sea turtles, sturgeons, least terns and wood storks. Reserve resources range from tidal and transitional marshes to oyster reefs, beaches, and inter-tidal flats and from coastal island forests to open waterways.

Brown's Ferry vessel

The Brown's Ferry vessel is a shipwrecked colonial vessel. Based on an analysis of artifacts found on the wreck, it sank sometime between 1730 and 1740 in the Black River, near a place known as Brown's Ferry, which is in the general vicinity of Georgetown, South Carolina. The ship was apparently a merchant cargo vessel, and was not obviously associated with the ferry operation. At the time of its discovery, the wrecked vessel was judged to provide a unique view into the shipbuilding industry of the southern British colonies of North America. The ship was more than 50 feet in length and 14 feet wide. It had a 3-foot hold, a draft of 2'10", and an estimated capacity of 30 tons. It was built of oak, pine, and cypress planking. She had a flat bottom and no keel. When she sank her principal cargo was a load of bricks. The vessel was excavated and raised in 1976, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It is now on display at the Rice Museum in Georgetown.

Sandy Island

Sandy Island is the name of a small unincorporated community in Georgetown County, South Carolina, United States, and a larger island between the Pee Dee and Waccamaw Rivers that has been preserved as a refuge and nature center. The island is about 9,000 acres of a prehistoric sand dune. It is bounded east and west by the rivers, on the north by Bull Creek, and on the south by Thoroughfare Creek. The northern part of the island is higher and is mostly a longleaf pine forest, which provides a refuge for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and numerous other species of plants and animals. About 9,000 acres of the island has been purchased by The Nature Conservancy for permanent protection from development. On the southern, lower end of the island are the remnants of old rice plantations, with the watergates and earthwork canals, built by African slaves skilled in rice culture. Such development was used to manage the water supply for irrigating the rice fields. A small community in the south is made up of a few families who are descendants of former slaves. The island is only accessible by boat, and workers and school children commute to the mainland daily for work and school. Because of its resources, the island is regularly visited by naturalists, planters, archaeologists, and geologists. Brookgreen Gardens runs daily "scenic" boat rides close to but not onto the island. Tours of the Southern end are available by private tour company.

Prince Frederick's Chapel Ruins

Prince Fredericks Chapel Ruins is a historic site in Plantersville, South Carolina. The first church on this site, known as Prince Fredericks Chapel, Pee Dee, was built in 1848 on a site donated by the Rev. Hugh Fraser in 1834. Most of the parishioners were rice planters along the Pee Dee River. These ruins are of the second church here, approved by a committee of Robert Francis Withers Allston, Davison McDowell, and Francis Weston and begun in 1859 but interrupted by the Civil War. The Gothic Revival church designed by Louis J. Barbot was completed in 1876 with a gift of $1,700 by John Earle Allston. With the decline of rice planting the church gradually fell into disrepair and was eventually deemed unsafe. It was demolished in 1966, leaving only the front wall and tower. The ruins were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
